Writing a Hazardous Materials on Display Policy

today I finished the first rendition of a policy for hazardous materials on display!

My organization, as it is primarily a Historical Society, found ourselves with a good deal of antique pharmaceuticals, (along with an array of other mildly hazardous items) in our collection. While this is very cool from a history-loving standpoint, it has proven to be a bit of a hassle from both a curatorial and legal standpoint. Thus, a good deal of my research work for the policy focused on covering all the bases in advising how to approach/handle the displaying of such pieces without causing a minor hazmat catastrophe.

Thankfully, our (new and improved) collections scope allows me to write a clause reiterating that no hazardous substance is worth potential harm to our collection, which means a good deal of our old medicines will get to go through a process of disposal and jar cleaning before going on display next year!

Since we aren't a natural history museum, there is significantly less worry about arsenic used as a preservation agent, but the more I research, the more I wish I could walk through our building with a Geiger counter!

How come almost every rechargeable device in the world has a lithium battery which will one day, at the end of its life, swell up into a ticking time-bomb full of fire and toxic gas, and yet whenever this happens and I phone up my local council waste management department/recycling center/fire safety advice hotline like "Hi, i have a bomb, who do i give it to" they're all like
