Alternative and DIY non-toxic toilet bowl cleaners and disinfectants
"Although DIY-ing your toilet bowl cleaner won’t put a surprising amount of money back in your pocket with every batch, it will provide a safe and natural solution for stains at a reasonable price. [...] DIY toilet bowl cleaner is safer for you to use and friendlier to nature when it eventually finds its way back into the environment than most toilet bowl cleaning products. That said, homemade cleaners can still be hazardous to your health if you don’t take commonsense precautions to protect your eyes and skin when mixing or using them. Wear gloves and safety glasses or goggles when mixing your batch of toilet bowl cleaner, and be sure to store any extra cleaner in a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid, out of the reach of children."
Author's tips for using this recipe:
"Disinfect the brush. [...] After use, soak it in vinegar overnight to kill any bacteria lurking in its bristles".
"[...] Disinfect [the toilet tank] by pouring a cup of your homemade cleaner [...] letting it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, and then flushing several times."
"[...] If you have stubborn hard water stains that won’t come off with a standard cleaning, you can use a pumice stone to scrub them clean."
"[...] One thing I usually recommend as a way to save money and have to worry about less ingredients is to just use less products. You don’t need a separate cleaner for your toilet… You can just use a safe all-purpose or bathroom cleaner! That said, I know that some folks just prefer to use separate cleaners for their toilet [...] That’s why I’ve included some recommendations for those below as well. 👍"
"[...] Some ingredients commonly used in toilet bowl cleaners you’ll want to avoid when possible include: Ammonia, Antibacterials (including “quats” and things that end in “cide,” which are usually pesticides), Bleach, Fatty alcohols (This is common in conventional toilet bowl drop-in tablets and the automatic tablets you hook on the side of the bowl, which is part of what makes many drop-in toilet bowl cleaners unsafe.), Formaldhyde releasers (such as methenamine), Hydrochloric acid (which is different than hypochlorous acid), PEGs & other ethoxylated ingredients, Undisclosed “fragrance“, Unnecessary dyes (like the ones that turn your toilet water blue)"
Author's note against excessive anti-bacterial usage in bathroom cleaning:
"One of the biggest problems with antibacterials and disinfectants is that they contribute to antibiotic resistance. This is become a serious problem that leads to millions of deaths each year. Depending on the specific ingredient, other problems associated with antibacterials in general include aquatic toxicity, microbiome disruption, endocrine disruption, reproductive harm, cancer, asthma, and skin/respiratory irritation."
The author then lists brands to try that offer eco friendly cleaning products along with reasonable pros and cons of each product. The brands include:

The DIY recipe
"This recipe comes from Julie Eigenmann! In a squeeze bottle or spray bottle, just mix together: 1 cup of water, 1/8 cup of baking soda, 1/4 cup castile soap, like Dr. Bronner’s (alternatively, you can use non-toxic dishwashing liquid); Optional: you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oils if you want. Shake before each use. That’s it! 🌿"

Dear healthcare workers who visit people in their homes,
If you give us a time window for your arrival and aren’t going to show, give us the fucking courtesy of a phone call.
My family wasted so many days waiting for people who don’t show up.
If you’re swamped, fine. TELL US YOU WILL NOT MAKE IT AND LET US RESCHEDULE.
Stop making us sit around, changing our routines and rushing to accomplish things only for all that stress and hurrying to be for nothing.
We’re tired, we’re burnt out and we have so little control of our lives already. Stop making it worse.
Just give us a fucking phone call, okay?
Sincerely,
A caregiver who is fucking tired and burnt out.

Home health care
Home health care keeps older adults who are recovering from injuries or managing acute or chronic health conditions where they want to be – at home.  One of the primary benefits of home health care is that it helps older adults continue doing everyday tasks like walking, bathing, dressing and preparing meals. This way, they can live independently at home as long as possible.

Be Your Own Health Hero: A Review of the Home Doctor – BRAND NEW!
In today's world, access to healthcare can sometimes feel limited. Busy schedules, long wait times, and ever-changing information can leave us feeling overwhelmed. That's why I was so impressed by the Home Doctor – BRAND NEW! This comprehensive guidebook empowers you to take charge of your own health and well-being, making it a valuable addition to any home library.
Tumblr media
A Wealth of Knowledge at Your Fingertips
The Home Doctor is a treasure trove of practical information, covering a wide range of health topics. From common ailments like coughs and colds to more serious conditions, the book provides clear explanations, potential causes, and even home remedies. This knowledge is invaluable, especially in situations where immediate medical attention might not be readily available.
For example, the section on wound care proved incredibly useful when my child scraped their knee during a park playdate. The book provided step-by-step instructions on cleaning and dressing the wound, giving me the confidence to handle the situation effectively until we could get home for proper cleaning.
Empowering Self-Care Practices
Beyond basic first aid, the Home Doctor emphasizes the importance of preventative care. The book provides valuable guidance on building a healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition, exercise, and stress management techniques. These practical tips empower you to take charge of your health and well-being, potentially reducing the need for future medical interventions.
For instance, the book's section on herbal remedies sparked my interest in natural pain relief options. I learned about the potential benefits of ginger tea for headaches and turmeric's anti-inflammatory properties – knowledge I can use to manage everyday discomforts naturally before resorting to medication.
A Reliable and Up-to-Date Resource
The Home Doctor is refreshingly up-to-date, addressing contemporary health concerns and incorporating the latest medical research. This ensures you're receiving accurate and relevant information, allowing you to make informed decisions about your health.
The book also features handy appendices with emergency contact information and a comprehensive glossary of medical terms. This makes it a valuable resource during times of stress or uncertainty, providing a clear and concise reference point for managing health issues.
Peace of Mind in Any Situation
Owning the Home Doctor has given me a sense of security and peace of mind. I know that I have a reliable resource at my fingertips, empowering me to handle minor health concerns effectively. The book's focus on preventative care is another bonus, encouraging me to take proactive steps towards maintaining my well-being.
While the Home Doctor doesn't replace professional medical advice, it serves as a valuable companion on your health journey. It empowers you to be your own health advocate and make informed decisions. Considering the current climate, this knowledge can be truly invaluable.

It kinda seems like my homemaking has had a couple of topics this spring that is circling. One is Lost Knowledge. The other is the responsibility to manage the health of my home. I've really been pondering on this a lot. Is there anyone else in this headspace?

Since spring is blooming and summer fast approaching, roaches have returned. I saw one a few nights ago atop an empty cabnet door and a glimpse of another tonight crawling between a drawer.
While i dont mind roaches as a species, theyre not welcome in my home. I'm a clean person, but since I live in an apartment they can be a collective issue. And, as with any bug, they will inevitably find their way inside because theyre so small and can fit through cracks and gaps in walls and doors. So repelling them as much as possible is obligatory.
I usually kill them on sight when i see them, which I've become good at, but every now and then I'll spare them by catch-and-release. I dont enjoy killing the roaches as much as I dont enjoy seeing them inside because, again, I dont hate roaches for what they are, and I respect their important niches in nature. Also, tbh, I dont like the idea of getting roach guts everywhere after I smash them lol. So I looked up a few natural remedies for repelling them, particularly the German cockroach variety that usually intrudes where i live.
This article gives tips on natural and easy methods to repell roaches, including a few natural insecticides like boric acid:
I liked this article for listing various plants that can or could repell roaches:
The article about insecticidal herbs and plants inspires me to finally invest in growing plants in my home. Id rlly like to try my hand at growing plants, especially since I have compost to help out.
Hopefully some of the plants listed in the article are shade-friendly 😭. My unit doesnt get much sunlight for long lol.

From Monitoring to Medication Management: How Automation is Enhancing Home Health
Technology has become an invaluable asset, revolutionizing the way individuals receive care and manage their well-being through home health automation services. One of the most significant advancements is the integration of automation into various aspects of home health services, particularly in monitoring and medication management. This shift towards automation offers numerous benefits, enhancing efficiency, accuracy, and overall quality of care for patients.
Monitoring vital signs and health metrics is crucial for individuals managing chronic conditions or recovering from illness. Traditionally, this process involved manual tracking and periodic check-ins with healthcare providers. However, with the advent of wearable devices and smart sensors, real-time monitoring has become accessible from the comfort of one's home. These devices can continuously track parameters such as heart rate, blood pressure, and blood glucose levels, providing valuable data that can help individuals and their healthcare teams make informed decisions about their health.
Moreover, home health automation services has significantly improved medication management, a critical aspect of home healthcare. Adherence to medication schedules is essential for controlling chronic conditions and preventing complications. Automated systems, such as smart pill dispensers and medication reminder apps, help individuals stay organized and on track with their prescribed regimens. These systems can send alerts, dispense medications at the appropriate times, and even notify caregivers or healthcare providers in case of missed doses or potential issues.
Beyond simplifying the process of monitoring and medication management, automation also contributes to enhanced safety and peace of mind for both patients and their families. Automated systems can detect anomalies in health data or medication adherence patterns, allowing for timely interventions and adjustments to treatment plans. Additionally, they can provide remote monitoring capabilities, enabling healthcare providers to keep a closer eye on their patients' well-being without the need for frequent in-person visits.
In conclusion, the integration of home health automation services represents a significant step forward in improving the quality of care and quality of life for individuals managing health conditions at home. From real-time monitoring to efficient medication management, automation offers unparalleled convenience, accuracy, and safety, empowering patients to take control of their health journey with confidence and peace of mind.
