“Relax, Murph. I’m doing this ‘cause I want to. Everything up here is the same, and I’d rather your weird greasy hair changed a bit.”

With a final swipe of her knife, she’s finished. Murphy looks at his reflection in the metal wall. “Huh. Not bad, Reyes. I like it.”

“Course you do. I’m awesome.” Raven grins.

He looks so much better than Monty.

malina fake dating

Lol yeah, so if you want me to actually finish and post this one, you'll have to bully me about it because I'd forgotten I even started it. But as I think I mentioned when I began working on it last June, I was inspired by one of the Malina Week prompts which was fake dating, so I started to write a little To All the Boys-esque one-shot where Mal suggests to Alina that they pretend to date to make Zoya (Mal's ex) jealous and to make Nikolai (Alina's crush) think that she's over him. But just for you, here's a little snippet of what I already had written:

Alina isn’t used to people staring. Normally there’s no reason for people to stare at her. She’s not much to look at, and she usually keeps to herself. She doesn’t mind. Frankly, it’s always been an ideal situation for her.

Today is different.

Today, Alina walks into school hand-in-hand with Mal Oretsev, something that even she couldn’t have foreseen a mere forty-eight hours ago. He’s one of the most popular guys in school, shoo-in for captain of the lacrosse team next year, and perhaps one of the friendliest and most outgoing people that Alina’s ever met. And starting today, he’s her boyfriend.

Or at least, that’s what they want everyone to think.

It might sound dramatic, but it didn’t feel like an exaggeration to say that Alina’s world almost came crashing down a few days ago. Some of it is partially her fault for being sentimental, but she’s not the one who mailed her secret love letters out to their recipients. 

When Mal suggested they pretend to date each other, Alina laughed in his face. Who would believe that Mal Oretsev would ever date Alina Starkov? It was all a little far-fetched. But Mal persisted, saying it would not only be a way for Alina to get Nikolai to stop worrying that she’s into him, but for Mal to make his ex Zoya jealous. They’d broken up right at the beginning of the school year, when Zoya wanted to date a college guy she met over the summer. But Zoya Nazyalensky is probably one of the most beautiful people that Alina has ever seen. How on earth was she supposed to make Zoya jealous? It certainly wouldn’t be with her looks.

Alina finally gave in, after Nikolai texted her wondering when she and Mal started hanging out. Clearly spending time with Mal made her less invisible to Nikolai. All she wanted was her friend back and for any rumors of a crush to be quashed. So she agreed. 

As they walk to her locker, Alina wonders to herself if she regrets her decision to say yes. Mostly because the feeling of all eyes on her isn’t as agreeable as she thought it would be. And also because Zoya stares her down like a hawk, and it makes Alina want to shrivel up and die. But on the outside, she holds her head up high, smiling at Zoya as she and Mal walk by.

They reach her locker and Mal turns to face her. He bends down and presses a soft kiss to her cheek. One of their agreements was that they couldn’t actually kiss, because Alina didn’t want this to feel real. This might be old hat for Mal, seeing as he’s had a real relationship before, but Alina hasn’t, and she doesn’t want all her firsts to be fake. They had a purpose and they didn’t need to waste time with things that only real boyfriends and girlfriends do.

“Great job. I’ll see you at lunch,” Mal says before walking off to his own locker. Alina watches him go for a moment before opening her locker and getting her books ready for the day.

So yeah, I guess let the bullying commence if you want me to work on this one this summer lol
