long way down
Have some Stanior feels set amidst the final battle. ;3
Fic: "long way down" [FFN] [AO3]
Pairings/Characters: implied Scabior/Stan Shunpike
Rating: very light T
Words: ~1,580
Additional info: romance, slash, cross gen, angst, Harry's era, 3rd person POV
Summary: Scabior's supposed to feel a sense of pride, leading part of this storm into the castle, across the bridge. Then why does it feel like a trap, with no hands out to catch him if he falls?
Various things set Snatchers apart from Death Eaters. There was the obvious lack of a brand on the inner left forearm, of course. There was the brilliant wardrobe, secondly. There was, most importantly, on overreliance on magic on the part of the Death Eaters.
That last notion in particular came to mind tonight as Scabior raised his head in the evening air and gave the dampness a sniff.
"What've you got?" came somewhere off to his left.
"Shh," Scabior rushed, half in annoyance, half to concentrate.
The voice's owner went still behind him. Others with him didn't pipe up after that, some perhaps waiting for Scabior's opinion.
But, when he settled on one, he found he wasn't keen to share it. At least, not with everyone present. No…
Not when something felt odd tonight, and that something reeked in the air.
Scabior didn't have Greyback's senses, of course, so he doubted the other Snatchers would put much faith in his caution now, despite Scabior's good nose on previous hunts. Not to mention several of these Snatchers, including the one who'd just spoken up (Rumford, an all right bloke), were low-level Death Eaters on loan well past their previous assignment ages ago.
At that thought, Scabior put his concern on hold and glanced behind him, picking out Faraday's men in an instant. Rumford was close by, near one of Scabior's trusted, the exceptionally tall and reedy Barkin. Rumford had taken to learning the ropes from Barkin in Moyer's place the last several months, since Moyer had grown indignant and wanted out after barely more than a few weeks. Speaking of the git—Scabior spied the burly bastard dressed once more in all black, more comfortable with the newly recruited Death Eaters back along the tree line than up front by the covered bridge with sympathizers and Snatchers. Well, Moyer could stay there, for all Scabior cared. Moyer was a pain in the arse anyhow. Unlike—
Unfocused eyes stopped staring out over the gorge and drifted Scabior's way, and blue eyes met blue.
Scabior pursed his lips, tamping down his frown about the odd air the longer Shunpike held his gaze. Faraday thought Shunpike trouble, keeping the young wizard Imperiused all the time. But the witch simply didn't understand that didn't have to be the case with Shunpike.
Scabior… Scabior knew Shunpike's story, because it wasn't far from his own. It was how the two men had come to an agreement of sorts, how they'd become confidants little by little over the past few months, without the need to take away Shunpike's freedom, only for him to feign it in front of others.
A broken twig snapped to his right, alerting him that Shunpike had inched forward and then frozen.
Scabior froze, too, and clenched his jaw. It was a dangerous game they played, keeping Shunpike's head down and the ruse up. It didn't help that, with the barrier around the castle and the odd air, things had Scabior on edge right now.
To the point where, if he had a choice, he wouldn't lead this charge tonight.
But he had to be alone in his opinion, because others paced around him and Shunpike, some hooted and hollered, more taunted the students waiting across the bridge behind the suits of armor come to life, and even more behind him and Shunpike didn't bother keeping their voices down much at all, acting as though this were merely a small stop before the Dark Lord took care of things, made history, and the Wizarding world changed forever.
And that would be the case. Everyone who sided with the Dark Lord or against the Ministry's abusive powers or just because was here tonight, to change the world.
So Scabior set aside his fear of the something odd and focused on that, because he was done being one of those victims of those with power and a name. He glanced at Shunpike then.
With everyone else's attention diverted, Shunpike didn't try as hard this second to pretend. His lips parted in a tiny, puckered, concerned "o" and his brow was furrowed. He was waiting for Scabior to share what had made the older wizard go quiet.
But Scabior closed his eyes and shook his head, assuring Shunpike not to worry. And, when he opened his eyes, something invisible fluttered into being in front of him, burning to a crisp, crumbling to ashes, fading just as quickly as it arrived. …the barrier.
      The barrier was down.
The chaos of the assembled behind him converged into a concentrated attack when victorious whoops rang out, and a reinvigorated Scabior held his wand high, leading the way across the bridge.
A lanky but worn student had come partway onto the bridge to taunt them but turned heel and ran the moment Scabior and the others gave chase, and the thunder of footsteps—dozens of them, no, hundreds—clamored after him. The pounding footfall echoed in the covered bridge, so loud Scabior almost couldn't hear himself laugh, and he couldn't hear Shunpike, either, when the younger wizard yelped something behind him—
      Ah.
      No, wait.
It wasn't the footfall that was deafening.
During their charge forward, there had been charges set off under the bridge.
The chaos of the assembled behind Scabior returned but morphed into panic, into screams and hollers and cries for help and desperate attempts at magic to save themselves. Bodies and splinters and bridge and fire rained down as Scabior and Shunpike and few more poured on what little speed they had left, to try and reach the safety of the other side.
      But it was no use.
The ground beneath Scabior's feet crumbled. He knew he should've trusted his instincts (they were what made him an excellent Snatcher, after all). Instead, here he was, his heart plummeting into his stomach as he drop, drop, dropped, flailing out of instinct like any other hapless animal.
      …but…he wasn't an animal.
None of them—not his Snatchers—they weren't animals or the lowest of lows or beyond saving.
That struck Scabior when a hand shot out from thin air and jerked him to a stop.
Pain snapped him out of his dismal thoughts, and Scabior followed the arm up to the face of his savior…and he gaped at Shunpike.
Shunpike couldn't pretend to be Imperiused right now, but they had bigger worries, certainly. For one, Shunpike had managed to cling to one of the broken but still standing structural beams, up towards the top. But the knuckles of his right hand which clung to the beam were pure white, and sweat dripped from his brow. He was holding on—quite literally—for life.
      For his and Scabior's, both.
"C'mon, then," Shunpike said, though his voice was strained.
Scabior blinked away his stupor and pursed his lips once more. "Come where?"
"I don' 'ave me wand, Scabior. Lost it instead of me life." He grinned (always toothy and a bit goofy, but genuine nevertheless) and tried pulling Scabior up. But Shunpike's grin dimmed as he struggled to heave the other man up. His willowy arm had a good grip but terrible lifting power. And his other arm wouldn't hold on to what remained of the structural beam forever.
They locked eyes as the weight of reality clicked into place. Scabior opened his mouth—
But Shunpike beat him to the punch with a glare. "If you say sumfink stupid like 'Save youself,' then I'll just 'ex you meself when I find a new wand, you wanker."
Getting chewed out right now, of all times, and by Shunpike no less… It was so absurd that Scabior couldn't help it: He laughed. It was a hearty sound and feeling, and he did agree with Shunpike for a beat, that perhaps he was a wanker, when they hadn't even exhausted all their options yet. So Scabior, who'd been clutching Shunpike's outstretched arm with both hands, pried one hand free to pat his own person for his wand. They ought to have time enough to try a spell or two—
Scabior blanched, his good humor evaporating.
Shunpike, having gotten so much better at reading him during his stay with the Snatchers, stared at Scabior, wide-eyed.
But no. Scabior had been fearful before, about tonight. He wouldn't let panic set in, even when he switched hands and—and felt that no, he truly was wandless…
Shunpike's arm strained as the younger wizard scrambled to haul Scabior up. But as he focused on his left and its precious cargo, the grip of his right arm on the beam began to slip. It wasn't noticeable at first, but then they slid by a centimeter and another and then by two inches.
      "Shunpike—"
"No! Don' distract me right now—"
      "Shunpike—"
      "I won' 'ear you—"
"Stan." Scabior's smile was small and tight when Shunpike whipped his head around, unaccustomed to the use of his given name by the Snatcher. Scabior rested his head against Shunpike's sleeve and pressed a grateful kiss to the back of the hand holding on to him.
But the gesture only worried Shunpike even more, despite their confidants-and-something-oddly-more status. Fear renewed his strength. He tugged Scabior impossibly closer, and Shunpike's face was nearly within reach.
Blue eyes locked with blue eyes.
Scabior could almost feel Shunpike's breath on his face.
Then Shunpike's left hand cramped and his arm spasmed, his fingers flying open, and Scabior finally stopped holding on and—
Done for the If You Dare Challenge (for prompt #812: how to save a life) in the HPFC forum on FFN. You read right; I ended it there. B3 I rarely do cliffhangers or ambiguous endings, but I knew I wanted this one to stop here, bc I can't stop thinking about them, *lol*. As for what Scabior refers to as his and Stan's "shared story," that's a ref to smthg in "Less Than Dirt," so that's my plug for you to read that. Is there another Stanior coming after this? Yep! "The Trial of Stan Shunpike," to be written once I figure out which of two possible endings I wanna do. :3c I rly do enjoy Scabior ships, tho…I just… *has written this man a LOT* And it's hard but fun to write Stan's thick accent?? Idk. Board the Stanior ship with me, folks.
Thanks for reading, and feel free to leave an anon/unsigned review via the FFN link or comment via the AO3 link at the top of the post, especially if you enjoyed this!

Have you ever done an analysis of which fandoms are most dominated by a single ship?
I hadn't done so before. I just took a quick pass at doing so, but only among the biggest fandoms on AO3 as of Jan 2024 (ones with over 10K public works at that time). I sorted them by the size of their biggest ship relative to the size of the fandom. This gives us a bunch of very big fandoms with a high % of works tagged with a particular ship:
Tumblr media
The raw data used to make this graph, including the corresponding biggest ships, is available in a spreadsheet here, or at the end of this post.
A few notes:
This is based on January 2024 data. Some things may have changed!
Not all these works are necessarily about these ships. Especially in the cases where the ships are canon, they may often be tagged as background ships.
There are undoubtedly many smaller AO3 fandoms that have higher percentages devoted to the top ship.
I removed some highly overlapping fandoms (e.g., Good Omens book fandom).
This is AO3 data only, and (as always!) AO3 does not represent fandom overall. In particular, ship popularity tends to vary A LOT by archive/platform. See some past cross-platform shipping comparisons from 2019 (comparing het vs. slash vs. gen on Wattpad/FFN/AO3), and 2014 (comparing popular ships from HP, SPN, and Sherlock on AO3/FFN). One highlight:

What was the HP fandom on AO3 writing in 2022?
some stats diving, ship- and femslash-focused.
default filters used for everything unless indicated otherwise: language: english, no crossovers. only on AO3 (obviously)
Tumblr media
hmm someday i'll do a yearly breakdown maybe.
for reference, there were ~324,676 total works in the HP tag updated in 2022 and before, so the top ship Drarry makes up 16% of HP works.
Tumblr media
ships in this list but not the former: jegulus, dorlene, and regulus & sirius.
ships in the former list but not this one: snarry, sevmione, tomarry.
Tumblr media
harry the character is tagged in 42.7% of all HP works.
the list of "fastest-growing HP character tags in 2022" was almost identical to this. sirius, remus, james, and lily went up one place, severus and ginny down by one, and ron dropped by two. no change in the top 3.
Tumblr media
i'm thinking of doing one for HP ships but am unsure which ships to do. you can get a rough estimation from graph #2 though!
A closer look at just the 2022 ships:
filters used: english, no crossovers, works updated between 2022-01-01 and 2022-12-31.
Tumblr media
color = ship type by canonical gender. outlined = canon ship
Background vs main pairing ships:
most commonly tagged ships, with the otp:true filter:
Tumblr media
very pretty spread of (canon gender, not AO3 category) F/M & M/M ships here.
notable: there is not a single snape ship in the first list, and two snape ships in the second (sevmione at #4 !! and snarry at #8). grindeldore is the other new entry, and
romione, dorlene and regulus & sirius fell out of the top 10
this is probably a better view though:
Tumblr media
a mix of all ships in either of the top two graphs (excluding the platonic ship regulus & sirius by definition of the otp:true filter), plus remadora.
open to more ship suggestions, but at some point i need to think about a size cutoff
anyway: some interesting strata here:
snarry+sevmione at the >60-70% mark. (do all snape ships show this trend? just crossgen snape ships? what about other crossgen ships? to be investigated)
grindeldore is an expected outlier due to the different canonical time period
marauders era tends to have more fics-with-multiple-tagged-ships. unexpected - there are so many more named lightning gen characters! lightning gen fandom more splintered/fragmented?
clustering of canon couples at the 15-20% mark, surprisingly consistent across marauders vs lightning gen
oooooo i could soapbox about this dorlene outlier for days. (tldr: if you want to write OFCxOFC that's all well and good, but writing OFCxOFC as what's quite clearly a background ship and a background ship alone? i think we can do better.)
Multi-shipping & ship overlap
marauders era is dominated by one main fanon pairing. no other “/” pairing with either of these two characters makes the top 10 list. in contrast, wrt lightning gen, Draco, Harry, and Hermione are all shipped with each other, with all three combinations making the top 10 list.
there is one pair of marauders era ships with ship overlap, though. which means stats! also included remadora as an additional comparison point since that's another big overlapping ship
Tumblr media
jegulus AND jily are tagged in 675 works, out of 3944 works (17%) where all three of james, lily, and regulus are tagged.
meanwhile drarry + dramione: 80 works tagging both ships, out of 8128 works tagging all 3 characters, with an overlap of <1% fics tagging both ships. these two do not mix.
actually ykw this all was very funny
Tumblr media
---
✨ FEMSLASH! ✨
filters used: english, no crossovers, works updated between 2022-01-01 and 2022-12-31, and category:F/F.
Tumblr media
ok so that's a complete nonstarter 😂
tried two ways of filtering down to just femslash ships without losing too much else in the process:
1) excluding works tagged M/M, F/M, and Gen (leaving 2765 fics)
dashed outline = cross-gen ship. solid = marauders gen. everything else = lightning gen.
Tumblr media
oh, interesting, people are writing genderbend wolfstar? *checks fics* -- no they're not. 'nuff said.
2) instead, tried adding the otp:true filter (2402 fics)
Tumblr media
very similar results -- both lists had the same 9 femslash ships. Bellamione (#1 on both), Fleurmione (#2), Pansmione (#3/#4), Dorlene (#3/#5), Linny (#4/#6), Cissamione (#5/#6), Ginmione (#7/#9), Marylily (#7/#9), Ginsy (#8/#10).
i don't see any obvious trends re. which ships are ranked higher on one list vs the other.
a real quick rating comparison between categories, using the otp:true filter:
Tumblr media
"angst" and "fluff" were the top two tags used for most categories so i decided to try a bit of:
Tumblr media
<1 = more angst works than fluff, >1 = more fluff works than angst.
the other top tags for each category:
F/F and F/M: both romance (#3)
M/M: established relationship (#3)
Multi: polyamory (#3)
Other: au canon divergence (#3). "other" was used to refer to a mix of NB/trans character, thingfic, and x reader.
Gen: au canon divergence (#1). i was worried about using the otp:true filter for gen fic but the top two tags were indeed & tags (harry & severus, regulus & sirius).

Specter Module on the horizon, do you think they'll try to bring her into the Abyssal Hunter Buff army (when released, she was the only one so buffing hunters wouldn't have made sense, but now...) Or do you think they'll keep it simple and just give her like...+20% HP ad 3.5% HP regen?
I'm going to be honest, I don't think Abyssal Hunters need any more buffs, and if they actually make Guard Specter buff allies after they removed Alter limits (so Specter and Specter Alter can now be played together, the biggest fucking buff since Specter Alter has +SP gen for AH) then I'm going to be a little cross about how bullshit 5 star module balancing has been (the only bad 5*to actually get a module that saved them is Leizi, the rest were on operators that were already good)
They'll probably just give a boring minor numbers buff to Specter's talent, though her being an Abyssal Hunter does make it very possible AH's get another +20% max HP

HP Rec Fest, Day 7
New day, new recs for @hprecfest! This one was a bit challenging for me; I admit I prefer to indulge EWE over canon-compliant (nothing against them, I just don’t care for Hinny and Drastoria 🫠) and it took me a second to think of anything beyond the iconic Turn. The rare pair rec was equally hard as so many of my top cross-gen pairs (hello Sirry 🤡) don’t follow the epilogue either. As you can see from the slightly longer blurbs I feel very strongly about the fics I chose - coincidence or not they’re both hidden gems by two popular authors - and I love that I got the perfect excuse to rec them!
Day 7) A canon-compliant fic:
Drarry
The Years That Walk Between by Femme (E, 15k) - past Draco/Snape
Draco finds his way after the war.
this is an oldie and I’ve always wondered why it is underrated on AO3, what with Femme being such a popular author. I can only guess it’s due to the Snaco tag but this side ship (emphasis on past too, Snape is very much dead here) is what makes this fic so unique imo. Draco’s love and pain are quintessential to his arc and to his future encounter with Harry, and I found his grieving journey truly beautiful and moving. for years now this fic has been one of my favourite comfort reads to revisit on a sad rainy day and I hope more readers will find solace too ❤️‍🩹
Rare pair
As We Tremble and We Bleed by @lqtraintracks (Harry/Teddy & minor Ginny/Dean, E, 5.8k)
I notice things. I always have. I’d feel guiltier about what Harry and I are doing if I wasn’t fairly certain Ginny went first.
only this ship to make me read angsty infidelity, ahh bless you lqt ❤️‍🩹 this is a brand new Hardy treat by the Hardy god themselves and let me tell you, lqt writes them like no one. for years now I’ve been obsessed with this kind, lovable Teddy and the way he’s such a good match for helplessly smitten Harry. their chemistry fills my heart and leaves me hanging by a moment: it’s hot and complicated, thrilling and devastating, slutty and tender, edifying and ruining, in the best self-indulgent emotional rollercoaster that only angsty problematique ships can deliver. I feel so lucky that I have one of my favourite authors writing my two favorite ships!

man i am having a lot of trouble building a squad for IS2 ending 4. ive zeroed in on Nightingale and Specter Alter to hold the main choke but it feels like unless i have a bunch of attack speed collectibles or i just cheese with Excessiveness i never have the damage to punch through before my main line collapses. you got any hot tips?
Let's go part by part.
Tumblr media
Red circle is where you want to engage. Remember to not place your units adjacent to each other, so as to not get mulched by Playwright's cross explosions. Purple is where you want to engage Playwright with intent to kill. Remember to save your burst for when he's under 50% HP (phase 2) because that's when he becomes VERY bulky (2000 DEF and 90 RES baseline!). Green star is where you engage Playwright only if you have something like Dreambind Castle or insane DP gen that allows you to build a frontline and still have the DP to spare on killing preparations (for example, a spawncamp Pozemka S3 + Typewriter).
Let's talk about the frontline, the main difficulty of this map, "New Chapter".
New Chapter is different from most every other IS2 map in that it has a lot of incoming damage, and Arts damage at that. Nightingale is very good for this, as you deduced, but enemies tend to be bulky as well, so you don't want stall, you want firepower to kill them fast enough so they don't leak.
Horn (placed on the lower tiles below the red circle, aimed up), Surtr S2 (yes, I know, not S3), Nearl the Radiant Knight S3, Skadi S3, Specter the Unchained S3, Mudrock S2, Cutter S1, Amiya Guard S1, you want a frontline that can kill sufficiently fast without folding while being Nightingale-sustained. Aid them with Fragile such as Suzuran S2 or Gnosis, heavy duty Arts like Goldenglow, Ebenholz or Eyja, or heavy Physical like Schwarz S2, Chung the Hungday, etc. Your ranged picks are a bit more limited due to the ranged tile restrictions, as you cannot place units adjacent to each other so long as Playwright is alive. If you're in a pinch for DPS, do place them adjacent to each other, but pop Nightingale S3 as soon as Playwright is about to do his first cross explosion (10 seconds after spawn; every 20 seconds afterwards). That can give you some leeway.
Don't be intimidated by the backline Golems, Golems are fragile, you need one unit with self-sustain and damage to deal with them, or two if you don't have a self-sustain DPS, so you can give them a healer. The bulk of your manpower should be on the red circle (and the final bit on Playwright killing duty).
Compared to the other final bosses, Playwright demands quite a bit of you in terms of dealing with incoming Arts damage, as well as needing you to properly be able to punch through Playwright's phase 2 bulk wall. Build with these two main directives in mind and you'll find his is a pretty simple map, merely demanding in ways the other IS2 bosses and most IS2 maps aren't, so it catches you off guard.

Thanks to the mods for putting on this wonderful fest!
HP Rec Fest - Day 31
Prompt: A fav among favs @hprecfest
Hold the Line
Characters: Alice Longbottom, Albus Dumbledore, Aurora Sinistra, Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape
Pairings: Alastor/Minerva, Minerva/Severus
Creator: eldritcher
Rating: M/R
Word Count: 24,834
Summary: Then Love comes along, plucky and persistent, and proceeds to drink all her scotch.
Why You Should Check It Out:
This was written as the most generous gift for me, and it is glorious.
This story is such a marvelous conception, the way it settles into the corners of canon and shows how Minerva's life unfolds, with the beautiful bittersweetness that Eldritcher manage to instill in all their stories.
Their inventive ideas about magic and how it interacts with characters' souls and lives are absolutely genius.
The idea of love for an ailing Abraxas as motivating Riddle's actions is genius, and so different from most of the conceptions we have of Voldemort. I adore that canon Dumbledore was so very wrong about his inability to understand love being his great handicap. The irony the author has given that stance here is absolutely delicious.
Same goes for Minerva's defining, unrequited love for Alastor.
And the idea of how Hogwarts Castle's magic and the Headmaster's work in symbiosis is absolutely canon in my head now -- so inventive and wonderful.
We Change the Nature of Things
Pairings: Albus Dumbledore/Minerva McGonagall; Albus Dumbledore/Minerva McGonagall/Severus Snape
Creator: dueltastic
Rating: MA/NC-17
Word Count: 8,383
Summary: Albus makes some observations about Minerva and Severus.
Why You Should Check It Out:
This fic is a masterpiece of a musing on the subtle and profound ways three very different people affect one another. It involves a highly unlikely threesome that ends up making the reader nod in agreement.
Right Nor Wrong
Characters: Argus Filch, Dolores Umbridge, Minerva McGonagall, Mrs. Norris, Severus Snape
Pairing: Minerva/Severus
Creator: kellychambliss
Rating: M/R
Warning: voyeurism
Word Count: 11,711
Summary: In Greek mythology, Argus the guardian of Io is sometimes said to have a hundred eyes. In the wizarding world, Argus the caretaker of Hogwarts has only two eyes, but he sees a great deal all the same.
Why You Should Check It Out:
This fic gives us voyeur-Argus Filch, observing (and lusting after) Severus Snape, who is otherwise entangled. It's a story about desires fulfilled and unfulfilled and makes Filch into a three-dimensional character and acute observer rather than a simple figure of fun.
The Steadfast Tin Soldier
Characters: Alastor Moody, Albus Dumbledore, Barty Crouch Jr., Minerva McGonagall
Pairings: Alastor/Minerva, Barty Crouch Jr/Minerva
Creator: selmak
Rating: M/R
Warning: Possibly DubCon depending on your definition of informed sexual consent. No rape.
Word Count: 20,000
Summary: Minerva hopes that Alastor will never know exactly what Minerva McGonagall did with Barty while the real Alastor was in the trunk.
Why You Should Check It Out:
This fic puts you firmly and frighteningly inside Alastor Moody's head as he copes with the horrors of being locked in that bloody trunk for months, and what goes on there isn't pretty, but it helps him cope. As does Minerva McGonagall, once she stops castigating herself for a moment of indiscretion that ends up torturing them both. This Minerva and Alastor are recognizably in-character, but they're shown dealing with a very odd situation, and it brings out things we don't often see from either. The way the relationship between them develops is beautifully drawn: painful, tender, funny. Read it if you want to gasp, cry, and laugh, all in the space of a few paragraphs.
The Reluctant Phoenix
Characters: Albus Dumbledore, Elphias Doge, Horace Slughorn, Minerva McGonagall
Pairings: Albus/Horace, Albus/Minerva, Elphias/Horace
Creator: purplefluffycat
Rating: MA/NC-17
Warnings: Cross-gen - teacher/student (Minerva is 18), infidelity in secondary pairing.*.
Word Count: 23,600
Summary: Albus thought that he was a non-running member of the human race when it came to romantic relationships. If pushed, he would have said that he was the kind of wizard who preferred wizards. -All that, of course, was before Minerva came along.
Why You Should Check It Out:
OK, even if I didn’t have a soft spot for student!Minerva/Albus, I’d still have loved this because of the (I feel like I say this about all the Beholder fics, but it’s twoo, it’s twoo!) wonderful characterizations. Especially Albus, in all his flawed glory–here, as a man who is a genius in many arenas, but a bit thick when it comes to love. Add in fluid sexuality, and I’m a syrupy mess on the floor.

a (near) change of heart
A bonus entry in the Stranger series. :D (Call it #2.5! XD)
Fic: "a (near) change of heart" [FFN] [AO3]
Pairings/Characters: established!Fenrir Greyback/Eloise Midgen
Rating: K+
Words: ~1,500
Additional info: romance, cross gen, AU fic, sequential, Next Gen era, 3rd person POV
Summary: While living their life on the run, Eloise brings up the topic of Dark magic. Fenrir has his own opinions.
He could smell the rain coming before the first drops fell from the stone-colored sky. When the drizzle began, though, it noticeably hit Eloise's barriers as she walked the perimeter of their newest, small encampment in the opposite direction from him. But then the rain passed through as her magic took hold and the wards held, invisible shields to guard them so that they might catch their breaths.
"There's still such a chill in the air," Eloise mumbled as she joined Fenrir at his side and drew her cloak's hood up.
"Because it's barely spring," Fenrir huffed. "The final snow was last week."
She frowned but didn't argue further. Instead, she cast a Drying Charm as well as a Repelling Charm to keep the rain off them, and she mustered a smile for him when Fenrir reached for her cheek, wiping a stray droplet there.
The sight gave him pause, and Fenrir idled there with her for an extra heartbeat. He'd growled at her countless times before, that a life on the run was his life, that she couldn't possibly keep up…yet, here she was, still here and still smiling. They'd been on the run together for near three weeks after their close-call with the young werewolf wildling in that village not far from her home. They'd made camp five times now, amidst various backdrops and slightly warming weather.
But changing weather was nothing in the face of changing seasons and settings—countries, if they kept with his plans. Fenrir would be impressed, truly, if Eloise made it to a month with him in this world outside her cottage.
On that thought, Fenrir broke away from her and scanned the thin trees around them. "Time to hunt."
Eloise caught his arm just as he turned to bound away. "Fenrir, wait!"
He stared at her, halfway to a scowl.
"It's just—we're not far from a main road into town."
"Which is precisely why we'll move again in the morning."
"I meant"—she settled him with a stern gaze and pursed lips—"try not to enjoy yourself too much tonight."
As if he needed to be told! Fenrir rolled his eyes, didn't bother reminding Eloise that he was acutely aware of the Ministry's pursuit of him, and patted her hand once before prying it from his arm. Then he darted into the tree line while Eloise stayed behind to set up the rest of their camp.
Sometimes, Fenrir had the stray thought to regale Eloise with certain tales, to highlight his lack of incompetence around Muggles. …but, always, he stifled the fleeting desire. Just because he hadn't scared his witch off yet didn't mean he wouldn't bring up the wrong tale of his past deeds. And he'd…grown accustomed to having her in his life.
While that was a strange enough thought, Fenrir grimaced to himself, not daring to think of what might need be done if she ever stopped being part of it.
Fenrir kept low to the ground, darting after lithe but juicy prey. Rabbits were still especially frightened at this time of year even with the fear of winter behind them, and the chase they gave helped him expend some of his wolfish energy.
Back at camp, Eloise tended the fire and kept quiet while she prepared the three rabbits Fenrir had captured. She paid him no mind, the way Fenrir relaxed and eyed her while she worked—that was common for them, not just in the past weeks but from before that, from their days at her cottage. But this evening her right foot tapped against the damp, packed earth, her knees twitching as she used a Slicing Charm to skin and prep dinner.
The werewolf crossed his arms in front of his chest and frowned. He'd seen this before, these last few weeks. Eloise got antsy sometimes, whenever they were close by to people. Was it a longing? For some semblance of community? Despite Eloise's old hermit habits, she'd still ventured into villages to do business, so—
Eloise interrupted his inner musings when she met his eyes. She waved her wand, cleaning herself up now that the rabbits were roasting by the fire. "You're certain you weren't seen?"
He tucked his arms in more tightly. "I know how to stalk and hunt," he snarled.
She blanched. Just as suddenly, color rushed to her lightly scarred cheeks, and she nodded. "It's…not actually you I'm worried about."
He furrowed his brow at her.
Since he didn't make another irritated sound, Eloise inched closer, beside him on a log he'd dragged close to their fire. Despite their proximity, Eloise frowned. "I'm just wondering if my magic's enough."
Now he really didn't know where her mind had gone. "I know I've called you 'daft,' but—"
Eloise mustered a smile and shook her head, leaning against his right side as if assuring him that his words hadn't made her stupid. "I'm just concerned. Most of what I know is defensive, Fenrir."
He wouldn't've guessed that, given the power behind her Blasting Curse nearly a month ago. "So? Learn offensive magic, then."
Eloise licked her lips. The fire crackled as she took a breath before coming back with, "…even the Unforgivables?"
For the second time that evening, she gave him pause, this time with her surprising words. How often he kept Eloise and Dark things separate in his mind—yet, also for the second time tonight, here they were, intermingling.
Eloise raised her dark eyebrows at Fenrir, waiting for a response.
He sat up straighter and unfurled his arms, his hand resting by her thigh. "Why bring it up now?" No, that wasn't what he wanted to ask. He twisted his lips around as he replayed her words in his mind and pictured her hesitation. Fenrir stared at Eloise. "You've never asked my permission before. Though you've heeded well warnings about sticking close to camp." He didn't bring up how she'd gotten good at watching the lunar cycle, too, and knew when to stay put when the Moon was full and Fenrir put distance between them.
She hummed at that, resting her head against his shoulder. "It's been on my mind for a little while now…"
Clearly. Though he didn't remark aloud, Fenrir exhaled, the sound coming out somewhat harsher than a sigh but not as gruff as one of his growls.
Eloise turned her face in toward his arm, and he could feel her smile, briefly, against him, even through his travel cloak's sleeve. "Being with you has given me a lot to think about, Fenrir. That includes those kinds of magic—not that I'm looking for a discussion about your past," she tacked on quickly. Her hand found his on the log, and she brought it up onto her thigh and laced their fingers, giving his hand a squeeze, reminding him that she wasn't scared of the claws ending his fingertips.
He shook his head. "Then why?"
"Well… I wonder if every user of such magic always had evil intent at heart. We don't call it 'Evil magic' but Dark magic." Eloise paused and faced the campfire. "Given the right threat, the right dire circumstances, I believe anyone could be capable of wielding such magic."
Fenrir peered down at her. With her attention elsewhere, he caught the glint in her eye—one that reminded him of a den mother, baring her fangs. He fought a thrilling shiver that wanted to sprint along his spine and once more shook his head, tugging Eloise's hand crosswise so that he could pull her into his lap. "Don't concern yourself with Dark magic, Eloise," he mumbled into her ear, pressing his nose into the swept-back hair by her nape.
But neither that opinion nor his ministrations were enough to satisfy her. She twisted her head up to gawk at him.
"I've…been wolf longer than man, feels like. But that's not always a bad thing. And I can smell the taint Dark magic leaves." He frowned, thinking of the Dark magic that made werewolves, werewolves, but he just as easily dismissed the thought—especially since being a wolf had its perks, and he wouldn't trade those for anything. But how to get his main point across to her…? "It's not difficult to be around until it builds up," he finished with a sigh. But that, too, got him thinking, of times he'd spent around Bellatrix Lestrange or the Dark Lord himself, and Fenrir's frown deepened to a grimace as he went silent.
Eloise, too, turned quiet, much like before. They sat for a bit in silence, watching the flames lick at meat and crisp it. Then she ventured, "…so, you're saying you don't want to see me change?"
Her interpretation caught him unawares. This damned woman…! He blinked and huffed, unwilling to concede, choosing instead to squeeze her tighter, flush, against him.
And Eloise leaned into the gesture and relished the contact, all the while chuckling at her wolf's nonverbal admission.
;w; They heal my heart so…! TTwTT It's been a few yrs since "The Sound of an Amorous Stranger" came out and I am working on getting the final entry, "The Sound of Homecoming," done so we can all enjoy those feels, but I was recently thinking about Elfen quite a bit and I think I had this idea in a dream…??? Idk! Anyway, this is set btwn "Distant Stranger" and "Amorous Stranger," and (dw not spoiling for "Amorous Stranger"!) a Certain Thing™ in "Amorous Stranger" got me thinking about Eloise's interest/willingness ever to use Dark magic. Tbqh, I don't rly see her using it, outside of the war or, as she says here, other dire circumstances… Honestly, she kinda has a point?! (Kinda like with Molly and Bellatrix in DH.) So! But I like this idea that Fenrir also wouldn't want to see her change so much, so have some hcs~ AHHHH, now I have major feels, so hopefully I can complete "Homecoming" in short order now!
Thanks for reading, and feel free to leave an anon/unsigned review via the FFN link or comment via the AO3 link at the top of the post, especially if you enjoyed this!

Talk to me about SNARRYYYYYY (had to sorry 😂) 💛
Send me a ship and I’ll give you my (brutally) honest opinion on it (and also maybe a fic rec).
Haha hi Danni!!
Initial impression: confusion, hesitance, a little weirded out. Wasn't Severus in love with Harry's mom? Isn't that kinda creepy to be dating Lily's kid?
Improved impression: UNHINGED SCREAMING. Wasn't Severus in love with Harry's mom? Yes, and that's why this ship is so interesting (although one could argue it was platonic love but that was definitely not what was written in canon). Isn't that kinda creepy to be dating Lily's kid? Yes, and it creates such a fascinating relationship dynamic. Harry's eyes, Lily's eyes. Who does Severus really see when he looks at Harry? How can he resist falling for Harry when he already fell so hard for Lily all those years ago (and still carries a torch for her)? Answer: he can't.
In terms of cross-gen pairings for Severus, Snarry is probably my favorite. I don't really see him as the type of person to go after one of his students unless it was under very pressurized circumstances. Say, for example, in the middle of a war and he's just trying to do his goddamm best at keeping this infuriating kid alive. I could also possibly see Snaco, but that's an essay for another day. Although Eldritcher has an amazing Snudley fic that I devoured.
Surprisingly enough, I also enjoy reading Snarry in different AUs, outside the HP universe or the war doesn't exist universes. I attribute that largely to you actually. You kept posting so many Snarry recs in the CoMS discord, and I kept clicking them haha. But I do think their underlying personalities remain. Severus is an insecure, bitter, ugly (yes ugly) man. He thinks the best years of his life were stolen from him. He does not see any reason to care. Harry is an impassioned, stubborn, reckless youth. He listens to Severus. He finds a way to get past that bitter exterior and in a way Severus lets him. He makes Severus feel seen when really that was all he ever wanted.
And wow, that turned into a whole essay. Apparently, I have more thoughts about Snarry than I thought. I've never written a full Snarry fic, but I am oh-so-tempted by the Snarry AUctober Fest.
-
My ship rating: Snarrytastic
My fic rec: Miraculous by @liladiurne [E, 15.5k]
When Severus finds out that the gorgeous and charming young man Lucius set him up with, the one who's accompanying him to his mother's charity ball, is really a hired escort, he is furious and disappointed. At first. But then he realises he can use this to his advantage. After years of celibacy, he's finally found someone he connects with, someone who understands him. And this time, Severus actually has the means to see him again. Or the money. But if money's what it takes to spend time with Harry, then he's more than willing to drain his family's fortune. In an unexpected twist of faith, he might not need to.
(been thinking a lot about this fic recently and ik you've already read it because i'm pretty sure you're the one who recc'ed it on the server, but it keeps spinning around in my head. soooo goood)
