my favorite storyline/moment: i liked the s2 storyline about the moonstone and elena being hunted by klaus for a ritual or whatever. also caroline's transition was *chef's kiss* and the bamon prison world arc. klaus and his hybrids, caroline's mother's cancer, dark!steroline, s2-3 forwood as they were bonding and growing into better characters because of each other and their relationship without it becoming their entire identity. also the whole Hunter thing in s4 (mostly because i liked cute island guy and connor). s3 klaroline, katherine's potential arc in s5 that was completely wasted on st*ferine.... also stefan/rebekah/klaus interactions in early s3 and klaus and stefan running off to kill ppl together that one summer, beklena hunting for the cure, STEFAN GETTING THROWN INTO THE QUARRY TO DROWN IN A SAFE

a story that never should have been written: listen the tyler!klaus storyline would have been interesting and entertaining (and a fun way for trevino to show off his acting skills the way nina dobrev had the chance to with katherine/elena) if the writers hadn't... done that. also the sirebond arc for DE was annoying as hell to me, as is katherine's gold mine of potential being wasted in s5. and enzo's arc in s6 (aka the writers had nothing to do with him so they just had him harass and kill woc) was a tragedy for a character i really liked.

my first thoughts on the show: lmao i literally had no intention of watching it ever because i thought it would be absolute garbage like twighlight

hi, dev! I hope you don't mind me asking this question, but as a gifmaker with prosopagnosia (face blindness), what draws you toward certain faces when it comes to giffing and roleplay?

i'm autistic, so i'm just innately curious about disability shaping and framing experiences with stuff in ways those without a disability might not consider/conceptualize initially. i also notice you tend to have a lot of muse for giffing katherine mcnamara - she seems to be a favorite of yours.

Honestly what draws me to faces I tend to gif a lot of on personal time is I gravitate to people with kind looking faces if that makes sense? I've seen it described as soft features too so it's hard to describe. But I really seem to attach to faces that look kind? I also have a thing for redheads, which has become sort of a meme, love it though. Katherine has been my favourite actress for years, and she also ended up playing my favourite character ever (Clary) so my attachment to her is extremely high and just keeps growing. Which I could write an essay on how people thought my attachment to her was adorable until it came out I was autistic and suddenly certain people found it creepy and disturbing and made me untrustworthy so there's that (:

Why do you think there aren't any autistic characters in kids media who are extremely adorable? They always have to be average looking. A lot of media uses cute animals so more people will love them, so why don't they make an autistic characters with big eyes or a big goofy smile if they want autistic people to be loved?

I'm gonna focus on series here because those are the most visible to a wider audience. There's a whole world of children's books that I'm not as familiar with but those tend to do a lot better than audiovisual media.

I guess a lot of it comes down to why these characters are made: to educate allistic children about autism. Now, that's not something I see as inherently problematic. A lot of these series focus on teaching children certain things like social and problem-solving skills, and there are a lot worse avenues to get your autism information from.

The difficult thing about educating about autism is that we're an incredibly heterogeneous group so I think that the characters' designs are a results of taking a "middle road" approach where you get a little bit of everything and end up with a whole lot of nothing, and this also manifests itself in the visual design. Also combined with the fact that these are often one-time characters so there's not a whole lot of room for characterisation.

As an illustration: all autistic characters in childrens' series that I know of:

A lot of them, especially the one-timers, do look quite plain, although for some it's not wholly out of line with the rest of the cast so I don't know how much that truly counts. But the one-timers are significantly more likely to be plain-looking so I think that supports my thesis that the look is a result of its purpose as an education tool.

The White Rabbit

"Oh, god, what the hell was I wearing?" Fallon exclaims as she looks down at the photo album, seeing her pre-teen self looking like she was straight out of a Disney channel show.

"You look very cute," Liam responds, chuckling slightly as he brings the photograph closer to inspect it.

"I look like Hannah Montana," she insists.

"Ah, every teen boys crush. Speaking of cute things, who is this little thing?" He points to the bundle of fur in Fallon's arms. She has to lean over to get a good look at the photograph, and smiles immediately when she recognises the tiny animal.

"Aww, that was my bunny when he was just a baby."

"You had a bunny?" Liam asks, a teasing smirk on his lips.

"Yes, I did. What? I love animals, you know that," she responds, wanting to wipe the smug look from his face. She knows exactly what's about to come out of his mouth, and she holds her finger up in warning. "Don't say it."

"That's adorable," he comments, causing her to sigh and roll her eyes at him.

"No, Mr Hoppy was adorable," she insists. "Or, he was until Kirby put her paws on him. She was the last person to see my poor boy alive. I was heartbroken when he went missing."

Liam's eyes widen at her words, "What the hell did she do to him?"

"I dread to think about it."

Liam leans into her, his arms going around her form, placing a sweet kiss into her hairline, "I love this side of you, you know that right?"

She hums, "You love every side of me."

"That's true," he concedes before turning the page of the photo album, his jaw dropping at the sight. "Oh my god, Blake had a mullet?"

"LIAM!"

Fallon's cries startle him awake, he hadn't intended on falling to sleep, but the sound of the water in the creek rushing by, and the warm sun beaming down on him lulled him into a mid-day nap on their picnic blanket. They'd been out riding in the country side all morning, the tiredness must have got to him.

"What? Where are you?" He calls out in the general direction he heard his wife calling from, searching for her in the greenery.

"Over here, quickly!"

He stands, throwing a quick look over to the horses who are still grazing in the field, satisfied that they're fine and hastily makes his way towards the woodland area.

"Are you hurt?" He asks as he approaches, seeing her blonde curls bent down amongst the shrubbery.

"No," she responds, turning to look at him with a desperate look in her indigo eyes, "look."

Liam steps to stand by her side to peer down at what has caused Fallon so much alarm, seeing an injured rabbit on the ground, white as snow, small enough to fit in the palm of his hand.

"I think it's been attacked by a fox," Fallon states, her voice full of worry, "help me pick it up, we can take it back to manor and help it."

"Yeah okay," he breathes out, working in tandem with her to hold the creature in the palm of his hands. It goes willingly, clearly weak, and lays still, it's nose twitching softly.

"Okay, I'll call the manor, ask someone to come pick us up and someone can take the horses back," she announces, her strategic side in full mode as she brushes the dirt from her hands onto her jodhpurs and pulls the phone from the pocket of her riding jacket.

He can't help but smile as he runs the pad of his index finger delicately over the ears of the rabbit, watching it look up at him in wonder.

"You are about to become the most pampered rabbit in the whole world," he whispers down to it, "just promise me you'll live. You aren't allowed to break her heart."

"Fal?" Liam asks in the darkness, waking to immediately notice his wife isn't by his side.

"I'm down here," her soft voice floats through the room, and he sits up gently to peer down with admiration at her, sitting cross-legged on the floor near the dwindling fire.

"How's our patient doing?" He asks as he crawls out of the comfortable sheets and joins her on the ground.

"She's eating a lot," she says with pride as she peers down at the bunny in her hands as she syringe feeds her the milk the vet had recommended. "I think she's going to live."

Liam reaches out a hand, tucking her fallen hair behind her ear so that he can get a good look at her face.

It's overwhelming, really, to see this side of Fallon. She's so mothering, and loving. He saw it with Connor, and now with this helpless creature. It stirs feelings in him that he's never felt before, and until this exact moment, he didn't know what it was.

Now he's pretty certain.

"I want to have a baby with you," he blurts out.

Her eyes dart to his, blinking rapidly as she takes in what he's said.

"What?"

He grins at her, a smile reaching his eyes, "You heard me."

"Wh... Why?" She asks, almost speechless.

"What do you mean, why? Because you're my wife and I want you to be the mother of my children," he explains.

"But you said you didn't want kids," she retaliates immediately.

"I said let's see where life takes us, well, it's taken us here," his eyes glance down at the bundle of fluff in her hands, "you were born to be a Mom."

"You realise that this is a rabbit, right? A baby takes a lot more taking care of."

He chuckles, "Uh, yeah, I am aware. But, I think we're ready."

Her head tilts to the side, a soft expression on her features that he absolutely adores.

"So, what do you say?" He whispers as his finger gently strokes over the bunny's form, "wanna make some babies?"

Fallon smiles up at him through her lashes, her thumb subconsciously caressing the rabbit's stomach.

He hears her take in a deep breath before responding, "Okay."

hits so hard i can hardly breathe

He’d already changed into a pair of pajama pants when she steps out of the ensuite, face barren of any makeup and wearing her own pair of matching pajamas, where she finds him already bundled up under the covers of the hotel room bed. 

She kind of hates herself for not seeing how stressed he was this whole time, for not seeing the panic in his eyes the moment his son showed up unannounced; but she was focused on herself and her own fears of losing Liam all the same, so she was blinded to the truth that was sitting right in front of her the whole time. 

His eyes are blank, staring ahead in front of him at absolute nothingness; she decides she hates it right away, willing to do anything in her power to make him at least smile and feel anything but worry. She climbs into the spot beside him, leaning against her hand perched up by her elbow, reaching out with her free hand to grab at one of his resting against the mattress. 

“Hey,” she says softly. “You doing okay?”

“I don’t know, Fal,” he sighs. She brings his hand up to kiss the palm of his hand, before tangling their fingers back together loosely. “This is just a lot to take in.”

“I know it is.” Her thumb strokes against his hand in small, comforting circles. “But, you don’t have to do this alone, remember? I’m in this with you completely.”

“I know, and I appreciate it,” he squeezes his hand a little tighter against her grip, smiling at her with those eyes that swelled with so much love and adoration for her. His head falls against his pillow, his free hand running a hand against his forehead and through his soft hair, an action she immediately recognized as a sign of stress. “I feel like such a hypocrite.” 

Her brows crease together in confusion at his words. “What do you mean?”

“Telling you just over a week ago that I didn’t want to have kids,” he says, looking over at her. “And in comes rolling my eighteen year old selves mistake.”

“You know I don’t see it that way, Liam.”

She applies more pressure to their hands, tightening her grip against his, hoping the action would calm him. She hates seeing him like this, in distress and worried over something he ultimately had no control over, something he realistically couldn’t change. 

“What if I can’t do this, Fal?”

“Do what, babe?”

“Be a parent,” he starts, looking at her with wide eyes. “It’s not exactly like I’ve had the best role model on how to do this right.”

“Well, you know what not to do, Liam,” her hand slips from his to rub against his upper arm, hoping the action would calm the rushing thoughts she just knows he’s having. “You know everything your mom’s done to you that you wouldn’t want anyone else to feel or go through."

“I don’t even know him. I…I don’t know what he likes or…or what he doesn’t like,” he sighs. “I don’t know if he has any medical conditions I need to know about. I don’t know if he’s allergic to anything.”

She focus on their linked hands, rubbing small little circles at the base of his thumb. She settles herself down against his side, leaning her forehead against the side of his face, hoping the close proximity will bring him some ease, some comfort; anything to take away all these worries and fears circling inside him. But when she pushes her weight up against her hand once more and looks back down at him, he’s turned at least five shades paler and she panics at the loss of color in his face, in his eyes,

“Liam?” She’s never seen him this distressed, in this much doubt of himself. He was usually the one comforting her, telling her everything would be okay. She’s not used to him feeling the way she’s usually feeling everyday. Although she’d damn do anything in her power to help him through it, she wasn’t letting him suffer alone. “Hey, Liam. Look at me. What’s wrong?”

“I feel like I can’t breathe.”

“Hey, hey,” she hums quietly, sitting up straight against the headboard. She pulls him against her chest, running her fingers through his short hair in an attempt to calm the anxieties obviously building inside him; she could recognize those signs far to well, having dealt with her fair share of panic attacks growing up. “It’s okay.”

She’d do anything to take away this feeling from him. 

“Breath with me okay?” It only take four reps for his breathing to even out, Liam always being in far better control of his emotions than she was. But she still doesn’t like it, seeing him this way. He didn’t deserve to have this bombshell dropped on him like that; to think your ten year old child was adopted by a loving family living a life neither he nor Heidi were apart of, only to find out the mother of your child had lied to you and kept him this whole time. “You’re gonna make yourself sick if you keep thinking of everything that could go wrong.”

The only thing she can do is hold him close to her body and hope the warmth of her skin calms him as she helps him breathe in and out, just like he’s helped her do countless times before, to lower his racing heart and gasping breaths. His fingers clutch lightly against the fabric of her pajama top, cheek resting against the skin exposed from the few buttons of her top that weren’t fastened together.

“It just sounds so awful, because you should love your child, right?” Liam rubs his cheek against the skin of her décolletage, pushing himself further against her body. “I just…I don’t feel like I do. I don’t even know him, Fal.”

“I know, Liam, I know.” She’s pretty sure she feels her heart break when she hears him admit out loud to her that he doesn’t love this child, but she can’t fault him for it; he’s only known the kid for less than forty-eight hours. He didn’t even know the child was still with his birth mother until forty-eight hours ago. “But you’ll get to know him and maybe you’ll be able to love him in time.”

He moves away from her reluctantly, holding tight to her hand still, leaning back against his pillow so he can look up at her. “I don’t feel like you should have to learn to love your own kid.”

“Well,” she drops their tangled hands to cup the side of his face and turn his head in her direction. “You weren’t exactly given a choice to love him from the start of it all, though.”

“It just makes me worry if we were ever to start a family together…” his voice trails off and she looks his way, his eyes finding hers before he continues. “Would I feel the same way about our child?”

“Liam.”

“I just don’t want to bring a child into the world if I’m not capable of loving them, you know?”

“Liam,” her hand finds his face again, circling her thumb around his cheek in small patterns. “Hey, you’re getting yourself all worked up here.”

“l don’t want to feel that way about a child if this….,” he trails off, losing volume with each word he speaks; his hand comes up to grip at the one she’s resting against his face. “This child was half of me and half of you.”

She immediately shuts it down with a shake of her head. “You wouldn’t.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I know you,” she says simply, as if there isn’t even a need for any further explanation on the matter, but she continues nonetheless. “You are so incredibly compassionate and loving and you put everything you have into something you go after. Not to mention, you put everyones needs before your own.”

She grips at one of his fingers and he holds on tightly, but he seems to just be soaking in what she said, staring ahead at their closed bedroom door without looking in her direction at all. He wraps one of his own digits around the finger she’s gripped on to, tightening their hold on one another, before he finally looks over in her direction. She hates the sadness she can see in his eyes, the way he’s trying to be strong for Connor’s sake, but she knows him better than that. 

And right now, he’s terrified for this unknown future they now faced together. 

“If we were to start a family, you’d know our child from the very beginning. They wouldn’t already be their own little person, with their own identity. Off somewhere living with their mother while you don’t even know he wasn’t adopted into a new family. You’d be there from the start, Liam."

She feels his grip loosen a little bit against her fingers. “I don't know, Fal.”

“I do,” she grasps onto the hand of his trying to pull away, refusing to let him slither away from her like that. “God, I just want to strangle your mother for doing this to you, making you doubt yourself like this. You’d be the best dad in the whole world. You have so much love to give, Liam.”

His eyes widen a little bit when he looks over at her, muttering a soft, “You think so?”

“I know so. Because you give me that love every single day.” Liam sits himself up and rests his back against the hotel beds headboard, pulling her into his chest, her head settling gently against his upper arm. “Love I didn’t even think I was deserving of until you came and proved me all wrong.”

“You know,” he says, his arm wrapped around her rom behind, hand rubbing up and down her bare arm filling her with this warm, tingly sensation only he could manage to make her feel. “You’d be the best mom, too.”

She laughs against him. “Well, I don’t know about that. I mean, I gave you son a bottle of champagne to play with tonight. That doesn’t exactly scream ‘mother of the year.’”

“Yeah, but your parents didn’t make things easy for you,” he says. She sinks herself just a little further into his embrace. “Sometimes I think they may have been worse than my mom. You’d do anything to make sure your son or daughter didn’t have to feel what you felt growing up. Or go through what you went through with your parents.”

“We don’t even need to worry about this right now. We don’t even know if we’re going to have kids one day,” her hand winds over across his chest, tired eyes starting to win out in this late hour of the night. “And even if we were, we are so not even close to ready for them right now.”

She breaths out a silent breath of relief when she hears him laugh lightly in the dimly lit room. “You say that as a ten year old was literally just dropped off at our door and is now our responsibility.”

“Yeah, I was trying to forget that part.”

“I just still don’t know what to do about Connor,” he says softly, fingers twirling around at the end of her strands of hair falling against her back. “He doesn’t deserve his mom abandoning him like this. And he doesn’t deserve getting thrown into the midst of our crazy lives, either. Especially when he doesn’t even know us.”

“No, he doesn’t,” she agrees. “But, we’re gonna figure it out.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.” She feels her tired eyes starting to flutter shut, so she reaches over to turn the lamp off on her side of the bed, before falling against his warmth again. “We’ll figure out what’s best for him and what’s best for us and everything will work out.”

“Look at you,” he says and she can hear the smirk in his voice. “Being the voice of reason. Being the positive one.”

“What can I say? You inspire me.”

“Oh yeah?”

“Yeah, but I’m also freaking out on the inside,” she admits quietly as he pulls her in further to his arms. “I just know you don’t need me to do that right now, so I’m hiding it really well.”

“I don’t know if you’re hiding it that well if you tell me?”

She leans over to him, finding his lips in the dark, lips pressing together in a soft, lingering kiss. She settles against his side again, his arm resting against her back, tracing random patterns on the exposed skin behind her. 

“How about we get some sleep for now? We’ll reassess everything in the morning and go from there.”

“Okay,” he whispers. “Tomorrow’s a new day?”

“Tomorrow’s a new day.”

Ohhhhhh my godddddddd I’m gonna diiiiiie. Ok let the memories resurface, this may take a minute.

my all-time ultimate fave character:

Stef. I just really liked her arcs, how straight forward she is, etc. Classic ISTJ tbh... cautious, reserved, protective, methodical, quietly affectionate. Like at the end of the day, I think she’s my fave. The kids go through so much ups and downs and Dumbass Moments that none of them can be my fave, and Lena is a close second but the writers only gave her one strong arc, and that’s when she tried to have a baby and that was so painful.

For several seasons I used to say my fave was Mike because he was Prime Dad Material. Like in the very first episode, he comes off as this douchey, entitled, deadbeat asshole who oversteps boundaries, right? Classic switcheroo. You find out this man is a saint, this man oozes emotional sensitivity and communication and affection, this man is also a dilf with eyelashes longer than should be legal. When he fostered AJ (I’m crying right now). Getting Ana through rehab??? Fighting his own alcohol addiction and not breaking once. Like the only time he ever let me down was his reaction to Dani MOLESTING Brandon, but he realized like whoa wait a minute... Brandon’s been taken advantage of and if Brandon were a girl he would see it different... Like all of Mike’s mistakes were temporary mistakes, he recovered quick and tried to do the right thing. If only his son was as quick on the uptake 😒

a character I didn’t used to like but now do:

Brandon. It took five seasons for me to like Brandon. You know how many seasons this show had? Five. And it’s because he’s pulled through the ringer of Suffering™ and it’s almost ALL his fault so that by the end when he’s doing the right thing again and again for the first time ever... and meets that super sweet girl... and then she DIES 

a character I used to like but now don’t:

Jude. He was such an intuitive, intense child, with wisdom earned from awful trauma, and watching him slowly assert himself was a wonder to watch. I do think the writers got lost with him, because his second love interest was a bore, his pothead thing was awful to watch, and when he became a twitch streamer with Taylor—WHAAACK. By the time of Good Trouble (which takes place years after The Fosters, so Jude is a sophomore/junior in college) Jude is drinking a LOT, partying a LOT, and fucking!!! a LOT!! Makes me concerned. Idk, it just felt like he lost his intuition halfway through the show and kept doing dumb stuff.

a character I’m indifferent about:

Every ex of the family lmao, idr them and I was not too fired up about any of them except maybe Emma. Like all of Jesus’ and Brandon’s exes I can’t remember.

a character who deserved better:

AJ. Literally just him and Mike are just the cutest because of how earnestly the actor plays AJ, you know I love found family tropes and stuff.

 Mat. Such a sweetheart, the most accommodating and supportive boyfriend. So talented. Gorgeous hair. Mariana didn’t deserve him.

Cole. This boy fought SO HARD to be recognized for his gender, organized an LGBTQA prom for all his classmates who were rejected from their school’s prom, had to get hormones off the black market, and was so intuitive and loyal... honestly I loved Cole.

Aaron. SUCH a confusing end. Out of all the love interests, he and Callie popped with the most chemistry. The shared quest, the rides on the motorcycle, pictures at the beach, his great college advice. Their fight at her prom was so left-field and upsetting, and we know it’s because they wanted Callie to be single when the series ended so she could be free to date in Good Trouble. If I’m not mistaken, theirs is the first trans/cis relationship portrayed on network television... ever? And I mean a relationship, not a hook up.

Wyatt. Another sweetheart, what happened between him and Callie wasn’t really about him, it was about her and it was definitely about legal issues, and she was right to set her boundaries, but ouch that hurt. Gorgeous hair.

Notice how most of this list either dated Callie or crushed on her lmao except for Mat. Also

Rita. The woman lives and breathes childcare and youth advocacy. Let her win.

DAPHNE KEENE. She had her daughter with her in the series finale but I haven’t heard mention of her yet in Good Trouble, she’d better have custody and a job salary over 70k for what this show put her through.

EMMA. This poor girl was practically torn in two between the twins, from Jesus’ messy/horny ass to Mariana’s bossy controlling ass. She should be president.

a ship I’ve never been able to get into:

Most of Jesus’ relationships. He’s a fuck up so all of them are basically waiting for a train wreck. His most healthy one was with Emma, who was too good for him, and the one with most chemistry was with Lexi, but she was messy af too so that wasn’t going to work.

a ship I’ve never been able to get over:

Jude/Connor. It sailed and sunk in two minutes. So apparently, Jude/Connor have the youngest LGBT kiss shown on television. This show really made history, huh. They were adorable, they literally struggled to be a couple (since Connor’s dad is homophobic) and then after being a couple for like 2 episodes, Connor’s dad walking in on them kissing and basically blowing up was so traumatizing for the kid that he moved in with his mom in LA to get away from him. They try to do the long distance thing but they're middle schoolers... and it’s their first relationship each... and both of them are just now figuring out that they’re gay. it doesn’t work out. Would love for Connor to come back in Good Trouble and try to woo Jude or something (cuz Jude...???? he’s just FUCKING... ALL the time. Like one second he’s the adorable 12-year-old you just want to shield from the world, and then it’s like TIME SKIP, he’s a college frat boy now and he fucks “straight” boys every weekend).

a cute, low-key ship:

Lol this show didn’t do low-key ships, everything was loud.

an unpopular ship but I still enjoyed it:

Stef/Lena; because they’re the main couple on the show and yet we as the audience forget that they’re even an option as an OTP. These two are marriage goals. They fight, they argue, they have conflicting viewpoints, but they always sit down and talk at the end of the day, and they pull it together because of their love for the kids and each other. I live for them, I seriously wanted them to adopt me. I’d cook for the family so they would be an ounce less stressed. They’re such great moms and they try SO hard to be there for the kids, who each come with truckloads of baggage and problems all befitting network TV teen drama protagonists.

a ship that was totally wrong and never should have happened:

BRALLIE. They’re SIBLINGSSSS AHHHH. “But they’re foster siblings” I DON’T CARE. This is not a damn Victorian novel, it’s gross. Maybe in season 1 it wasn’t as bad since Callie had zero intentions of staying with the Adams-Fosters family and was used to being bounced around in foster care, but after bonding with them all and truly believing they wanted her, season 2 onward Brallie disgusts me.

Mariana/Nick. Let’s talk about his actor for a second. Louis Hunter played a teenager in The Secret Circle back in 2011 (don’t @ me but I loved that show) and guess what, friends, he was TOO FUCKING OLD to play a teenager THEN. That opinion stands 7 years later. An absolute creep who traumatized Mariana, the girl had to go to THERAPY. She went to THERAPY because of him.

Lena/Monte. UGHHHHHHHHh this made me so mad. Monte was being so gross and inappropriate, like not only is Lena her employee/subordinate... but Lena is a WOMAN. She’s grown as hell and confident in her identity and has a whole ass wife (a WIFE) and a family to take care of, and here comes Monte with her weird ass flirtations and stuff. She could NEVER. Lena is a goddess and Monte but an ant crawling on the sidewalk outside her temple.

my favourite storyline/moment:

When Stef confronted her internalized homophobia and misogyny during his breast cancer scare and she cut her hair to symbolize her ownership of her femininity. That was POWERFUL. Stef actually had so many great emotional arcs throughout the show; losing her father (who never really “got” her “lesbianism”), her mother’s breast cancer scare, HER breast cancer scare, her fight to become a detective, maybe it’s Teri Polo but Stef is such a stand-up, rigid character with such a strong moral center that watching her trudge through emotional trauma every gd episode was riveting.

Jude’s selective mutism. I remember this out of nowhere, but Jude went mute?? And he had to see a therapist, who deduced his problem and attributed it to an anxiety disorder and advised the family not to stress him out or pressure him to talk, and he went like this for a couple episodes. Like this boy went through so much trauma that it took like one thing, one little thing, to make him shut down. And Callie like patiently waiting for him to speak, and then her seeing her rapist and the only person she wanted to talk to about it was her little brother and he still wouldn’t talk, he just sits there playing video games, and she sends him a message on Xbox Live saying ‘Please talk to me’ and he ignores it then she sends another message “I saw Liam today” and he just looks at her as tears are falling down her face and places his hand on her arm in support. I. CRIED. Even after that moment, like in the next episode he’s still mute and Callie reminds him again that he’s been so strong compared to her that he’s “due for a breakdown” and not to feel any pressure to talk before he’s ready, and they fucking plant flowers together for Lena (I’m covering my mouth with one hand to keep from crying, I’m getting old feels. Remember when we used to say ‘feels’?). Ok I’m done.

Ok the storyline where Brandon is caught cheating for people on the SATs and won’t be able to go to Juilliard was POWERFUL. I loved that Brandon and Lena had a lot of bonding moments, and Lena was honest with Brandon in a way no one else was, she was like these are the consequences of your actions. You had decisions to make and you made the bad decisions every time, and now you’re here. Remember when you selling fake IDs for that dealer ended with your hand getting smashed so you can’t play classical music any more? Did you learn from that? Clearly not. POWERFUL. Lena scalped me on that day.

a storyline that never should have been written:

Most of Brandon’s storylines lmao. Him selling the fake IDs, him taking SATs for other students, him dating that 21+ woman with a kid and deciding he has to drop out of school and get a full time job to take care of her??? I love how Stef had to pull him aside and tell him “You’re Captain Save-A-Ho! And I know this because you got your Save-A-Ho gene from me!!” Brandon was MESSY. Despite being the typically “boring” of the kids in that he didn’t party or drink, he had interest in typical teen stuff, he was also impulsive in the worst way with his relationships and would get tunnel vision. Remember when Stef and Lena had to pull a restraining on Brandon for Callie??? My godddddd, a MESS. We’re not going to talk about how he finally fell in love with the right girl and she fucking dies.

BRALLIE. That bit where Callie didn’t think she was getting adopted so she FUCKS BRANDON, I’M NOT OVER IT. AHHHH.

Jude becoming a pothead. It was really dumb. I’d have been happier if the focus was on his anxiety and how it helped him.

Everything Monte related.

The time Jude downloaded Grindr and met up with a guy in his motel room?? And the guy was a grown man?? And of course he freaks out because Jude is a kid and tells him to gtfo??? That made me SOOOOO uncomfortable, which is why I hated it. BUT, I liked how the moms handled it, because obviously he’s a boy who’s curious and he’s surrounded by other kids—especially his four siblings with their tumultuous whirlwind of relationships—who are constantly making out with this person and hooking up with that person, and because he’s gay... and has this limited dating pool... and his first love moved to another fucking city to escape his homophobic dad... how does he get to explore his sexuality? who does he get to kiss at a party? This was so relatable, so many lgbtqa youth deal with this everyday, this sort of social pressure and FOMO as the cis straight kids around us are hitting all these romantic and sexual milestones while we’re sitting on an island. And obviously Stef and Lena sympathize, but then empathize how incredibly dangerous it was because Jude could’ve gotten hurt, there are guys out there who could do terrible things to him and he has to think these things through, not to mention the guy in question could’ve been just a normal dude trying to get it on and that he was put in danger—and this was the same season that explores how Jesus and Mariana’s birth father ended up on the sex offenders’ registry. It was handled well but remembering this storyline gives me anxiety.

The Jack storyline. I forgot this kid’s name and what happened to him so I had to peruse the wiki and I fell down a rabbit hole. Basically, this is a kid who was in a privatized group home, during a season in which Callie does volunteer work with a woman, Justina Marks, who is trying to pass a bill to reform child social services—only to discover that she wants to privatized the foster system to make money off of them, which of course makes Callie like do a BUNCH of risky stupid shit to take her down. So Jack gets temporarily moved into the Adams-Fosters home, proving to be a very quirky, quiet, sensitive boy, he kisses Jude after Jude’s breakup with Connor? Then reveals he’s not actually gay, he just wanted Jude to be happy? And it’s really fucking sad because he has this bleeding heart and this need to make everyone around him happy because he sees himself as this burden. Then he gets placed into a new foster home, despite Stef and Lena wanting to keep him around... and he gets put in the same foster home with the same man who abused Jude in the show’s pilot—and like the inciting incident for the show itself (Callie destroying his car to distract him from beating her brother > her going to juvie > her getting beat up in juvie > Lena seeing this poor bruised up girl and thinking “she’s my daughter now”). So Jack ends up being fostered by the horrible, abusive man who should never have been allowed to be within feet of a child again, and Stef just so happens to be one of the officers nearby when a domestic disturbance is called in, and when she arrives at the house with her partner she’s like “bruh I know this house” and when she goes into the kitchen she steps on something: a pair of glasses. Whose glasses???

JACK’S. And she quietly lays a sheet over his dead body. His foster father, who’d already been arrested once for beating Jude, shot him in a drunken rage. And CALLIE LATER FINDS OUT JuSTINA MARKS SET IT UP TO USE AS HER FACE CASE IN SUPPORT OF HER BILL.

my first thoughts on the show:

Literally the first time I heard the theme song when I randomly decided to watch it on Netflix in like 2014 (2015? I can’t remember, I don’t think season 3 was out at that point so it might’ve been 2014) I was like oh this is going to be the crying show.

my thoughts now:

I was right. I would not rewatch this show lmao, but I’m fond of it. I did randomly decide to start watching Good Trouble and surprisingly I like it and I missed the characters. I can look back and appreciate how this show handled a lot of tender topics as tastefully as they could, and examine them from a lot of different angles.

The blanket was a welcome weight that settled over her shoulders, blocking out the chill of the night air as she pondered the answer to his question. 

Could she answer his question?

Although she always made every effort to answer them, to explain things as best she could in a way that he might better understand, Ollie wasn’t sure she was quite ready for this one just yet - not when it would force her to acknowledge the feelings that filled her both with excitement and a sense of dread.

“Love is...” 

She could feel Connor’s eyes on her, observing her through the uncharacteristic pause.

“It’s complicated but also so simple, all at the same time. It’s different things to different people, and...”

The rest of the words died on her lips, voice stolen away by her reluctance to admit what she knew was the truth.

The flames flickered brightly, in stark contrast to the darkness of the night sky above them, as Hazel glanced over to see the warm eyes she’d come to adore watching her.

Silently she shuffled closer to Seb, a shy smile curling her lips when he easily slipped an arm around her as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

Her own eyes closed as she basked in the heat from the fire that she once would have shied away from, completely content for the first time in what felt like forever.

Almost as if on queue she felt the first tendril wrapping it's way up her leg, quickly followed by another. Her breathing became more panicked as she kicked and tried to fight against them, Liam's name escaping her in a hoarse shout before she was jerked under the surface and more tendrils wrapped up her arms, pinning her wrists together as she thrashed. Her breath was running out as she was dragged deeper, a dark laugh echoing in her ears and an unwelcome hand on her face - "Alaya!" Eyes flashing open, she jerked upright. Her chest was heaving and there was a wild panic in her eyes as her brain struggled to catch up with what was happening - panic starting to rise further as she realised that her wrists were still pinned together. It took a moment longer than it should of for the familiar soothing voice to reach her ears before her wrists were released and a strong pair of arms wrapped around her, pulling her close.

There was no water. She wasn’t drowning. She was safe.

The moment the light left your eyes – the moment he lost yet another person he’d come to care for – nearly broke him.

The emotions were overwhelming – heartbreak at having lost you, the person who had finally shown him that he could move on and continue living. Regret, for all the time he wasted before taking the leap and admitting how he felt. A deep, undeniable sadness that had never truly left him and was simply bubbling back to the surface.

And the unshakable guilt stemming from the fact that he was still alive whilst you weren’t. You’d survived the battle. It was supposed to be over. They’d lost a lot, but finally succeeded and saved the world from further tragedy.

It wasn’t fair.

30 Day Assassins Creed Challenge

Day 2. Favourite Character

Shay Patrick Cormac! (Spoilers ahead)...

I love this good boy, he deserves the world and here’s why.

Shay is an fascinating fellow because he is flawed, which is something a majority of video game ‘heroes’ are missing in a lot of games; making them too basic (and honestly boring).  Shay is interesting because he has depth, and inner conflict as he’s not sure if what he is doing is right sometimes.    

Additionally, he genuinely cares about the ‘lives of innocents’.  I’ve always liked the warning Achilles gave to Connor in AC3 saying, “in your haste to save the world, boy, take care you don’t destroy it”.  Throughout the series, there is this whole, ‘one for the many’ feeling with the Assassins and Templars.  They are so determined that they are right and what they are doing will better the world that sometimes they get a little lost.  Shay is one of the only characters that appeared to care what happens to everyday people.  An extreme example is his devastation after the Lisbon earthquake but on a smaller scale, going after the gang members causing trouble for the Finnagins.  On top of this, he doesn’t take his assassinations lightly. He genuinely cares and is willing to go to extreme lengths to make sure others aren’t harmed (i.e stealing the manuscript). 

Furthermore, 2 of my favourite Shay scenes are towards the end of the game when dealing with Achilles and Liam.  The conversation that he has with Liam as he is dying, is in itself sad and is a reminder of everything that Shay has sacrificed (whether that be right or wrong).  Liam was Shay’s closest friend from childhood and no matter how angry they were at each other, that had to hurt.  Shay’s goodbye to Liam by pulling his hood up shows that there is still that recognition of their relationship and respect towards the other.    

Going further into that scene, when he stops Haytham from killing Achilles, shows the true nature of his character.  “what kind of world are we building if we can not show mercy”.

He’s also just freaking adorable and deserves happiness.

Jenny’s Belated Live Blogging - 4th October 2018

- ‘I just want you to be an ex I never have to see again’ - oh Bernice...we all want that too. I hope she dumps him at the wedding. Haha. 

- I love Bernice and Liam though. They’re so awkward but in an endearing way. It’s great. And he’s a doctor so he’s got a good job unlike...Daz. So you know, plus. But no, they’re wonderful. 

- That was a low blow for Leyla to go after Tracy with sex work thing. But I was pleasantly surprised to see her go apologize and I would watch an entire episode of them drinking and slagging off David. That’s quality content. I want them to be friends again. 

- God Joe and Graham are boring. I really want to care. I know there are people that care about them so much and I just...don’t get it. They are so dull to me. I hope Kim Tate can manage to liven them up a bit. And Connor is just...dead now? Okay. That was anticlimactic. I suppose. 

- Also...so much Robert/Robron plagiarism. Haha. First Debbie suggesting Joe get a watch engraved for Graham. No Debs...that’s gonna be Aaron’s thing for Robert tomorrow okay. Stop it. And then Costco Robert ordering a hit and then trying to call it off at the last minute. Couldn’t even get there in time to stop it himself. Haha

- I said before that I quite like Vic being mad at Aaron because it finally feels like she’s recognizing him as an actual person and not just one half of a relationship again. They have a long history and I’d love to see them eventually have a hear to heart and work things out after all of this plays out. I mean I’m sure the show would drop their friendship again like two seconds later but the sentiment would be nice. I’m still not sure why she actually changed her mind and decided to go to the wedding after all. I guess Rebecca’s ‘all my family is dead’ story really hit home? Haha. I did like Aaron’s line about her throwing a brick at him instead of confetti.

- Rebecca and Ross continue to be quite sweet and it still makes no sense to me long term. (yes..i know...they stood together with Seb so...theory.) I assume they had Robert ask her to come to the wedding for a couple reasons. One, because of the after effects of Chaddy losing Grace and him thinking she should get to spend time with Seb. Two, because it shows that Robert has moved on enough from the whole situation (even if he didn’t ask Aaron first) that he can invite her. Three, because she respectfully turned him down due to all the reasons she probably shouldn’t be there, we got to see her finally kind of acknowledge that in a way she hasn’t really before, which kind of draws a line under it all even more. 

- Faith was amazing today with Paddy and especially with Chas. She can be a bit too abrasive at times but today she was brilliant with Chas. And all the wedding details are gorgeous. I love that they actually have a custom stamp. Amazing. 

- I also said earlier how much I’m liking the Robron content right now in terms of them interacting with other people and being integrating into multiple little storylines but still having the wedding as a strong tether between them and it really is great to see. I love seeing Aaron be genuinely worried about his mum but also extremely grateful for all she’s doing for him and the wedding. I like seeing Robert trying to talk Vic into coming but still defending Aaron. 

- I loved that little ‘just don’t slam the door’ moment. That was a very ‘married’ moment. 

- Talking about spending the night apart and Robert saying it just didn’t feel right was adorable. But so true. He really doesn’t do ‘apart’ well. Get him his butterfly blanket for tonight please. 

- I was so glad to see them get the last scene of the episode to lead into tomorrow. And it was such a sweet scene. Always love Robert’s hand on Aaron’s face and the way Aaron melts for Robert. That’s really one of my favorite things about their relationship, is the way Aaron softens so much with him. Not all the time, but in moments like this it’ so lovely. No one else has that effect on him. 

- I assume they called each other by the right names tonight because they’re trying to pretend like they’re not already married. Haha. And because there’s 100% going to be a scene tomorrow where Maxine has them switch it back again. 

- Oh and I loved that line from Charity about not answering the phone ever, partially because she just doesn’t like people. Relatable. 

- BRING ON THE WEDDING!!! (I’ll get to watch it at some point)
