ok now I gotta know: what’s the deal with death au about??
Oh my, thank you for asking! That was a mistake:)
First of all, I'm gonna make it clear: this whole au is still pretty much work in progress, we change or add new ideas almost every day, but I'm gonna write down the main concept of it!!
Behold, long post below!
Basically, the whole idea is about Tango being possessed by good old Zedeath. It all starts on the early season 9, when Tango has no idea what to do after finishing the Nether hub. Of course he has some base ideas, but he wanted to make something big, something that will not be forgotten. Lucky, he got payed a visit from his best friend's clone, who he hasn't seen for a few years. Tango knows Zedeath is not as evil as any of the helsmits, he's just there to kill you a few times in a fun way, but it's okay. They're good. Right? Zedeath offers him a great idea, a fun project for this season. The idea is to rebuild the game Tango spent countless hours on few seasons ago, Decked out. Tango gets a cool project, a bit of Zedeath's magic that allows him to ignore exhaustion and sleep, with this comes a new look, and a friend who will be around all the time for the rest of the season. Hermits loved the first game, what will they say about the second one? Even bigger, scarier, and much more deadlier? It is hard to forget a game like that. But what will Zedeath get out of this? He gets to enjoy hermit's deaths. He's tired of always hunting them down, time to take it to another level. Tango will build him a never ending food supply, he will get enough souls for the rest of his... Afterlife? Of course the deal had some important point, like:
None of them can talk about the deal or mention each others in any way in a dialogue with others.
The dungeon is allowed to have some magic elements that will keep track of players status (heartbeat/clank/hazard) which Zedeath will provide.
Tango is not allowed to have any big side projects.
No deadline is set, although the more time it takes- more consequences there will be(not set what "consequences" are).
Tango can't be hurt by any outside sources+ hunger/lack of sleep etc.
There is a mark in the back of Tango's hand as a reminder of all the work Tango has to do.
The deal will be over once the winner of Decked out is given the prize.
It goes well for the first few months. Tango is having a great time. It feels weird, kinda like the Demise, he did not feel anything. But that was a good thing. He could work for hours without being tired, he doesn't need sleep or food. It's hard to get used to the new appearance, but it's not like he's having any problems with it: he can't see his new appearance, the reflection is just as it always used to be with his blonde fire hair and ruby eyes. But there is one major issue... Tango is not working fast enough. At least not fast enough for Zedeath. So he finally makes use of the mark on Tango's hand which he hides under bandages to avoid any questions and makes it burn. Literally. With blue flame. It was not the real fire, just a bit of magic that couldn't burn anything but could hurt Tango very bad. It was the only thing that could actually hurt Tango, anything caused by Zedeath himself. Pressured by the constant pain, Tango starts working harder. But turns out the consequences Zedeath mentioned in the deal are actually painful ways to pressure him. As time goes on, the fire spreads on his hand and arm more and more, making it only harder to work on the project. Of course Tango's allowed to have visitors and leave the dungeon from time to time. And yet, Zedeath is always with him. In his mind speaking to him, or in his shadow.
Things started to get worse once levels 1 and 2 became playable. None other than Zed was invited to be the first victim of the dungeon. It was going great, right up to the point where he dies to the Beast. And that, being the first official victim of the dungeon, gave Zedeath so much power. Tango starts to notice that he doesn't control his actions or thoughts. Every time he wants to do something not Decked Out related, Zedeath would not let him do it by mind controlling Tango. He has no option then just play along and try to finish this project. More time goes by, more fire spreading on his hand slowly making it to his shoulders and back still causing burning pain, more testing and players dying causing more possession. By the time Decked out is almost finished, Zedeath realizes that he can't trust Tango with running the game. So he takes everything under his control. Tango, being extra tired of all the work he's done, is trapped in his own body without any ability to do anything. He can just observe, watching himself do things he doesn't want to do or say stuff he didn't think about. After all the fine spent in Tango's mind Zedeath manages to copy Tango's behavior perfectly, so no one even noticed the difference. During the playing period Tango doesn't get a chance to get control over his body back. He starts to realize that all his works wasn't worth it. At the end of the day, it is all just to feed Zedeath. Hermits enjoy it and thank "Tango" for this game, but they do not realize that Zedeath is taking a little part of their souls for each of the runs. Even thought Tango doesn't have any control over his own body, he still feels the pain from cursed flames. By the time Decked out is close to finish, the fire scratches started to appear on the visible parts of his body: it was covering all his neck and started getting to the face. Zedeath was more than satisfied with the results of this project, and once the winner is given the prize, Zedeath is ready to leave. He doesn't leave much after him, just a little goodbye.
And then there's nothing left. Decked out is done. Zedeath is gone. Tango is left all alone, he has no immunity to hunger or sleepless nights anymore. Now Tango can see the real reflection, and for the first time he sees how terrible he looks: all pale from the lack of sleep and sunlight, super thin, with huge bags under his eyes, basically looking dead. He feels every thing possible in one second, but he's finally freed for the burning pain. He almost passes out but pays a visit to Zedaph, the only person who will surely let him stay. Or maybe he comes there because Zed reminds him of Zedeath too much. Tango is still afraid to talk about Zedeath, even if it's all over, but Zed doesn't force him to. He just lets Tango to stay in his place for as long as he needs to, just to get better. Tango needs help with getting used to eating and sleeping again, and Zedaph is here to help his best friend recover from the evil things his clone did to him.
Anyways, there are a lot of bonus ideas which would make this post never ending so I'm gonna tell em another time. Anyways, I hope you had fun reading it, once again thank you for asking!! Can promise more content on this au for sure:D

Bryn (Jedi OC) x Obi-wan Kenobi
So Bryn, my Jedi oc, is in a poly relationship with both Hunter and Obi-wan (fully consensual, and codywan is also cannon in my oc au, no clonecest). This is an amazing character workup, in combination with TBB S3 premier, it really got my writing flow going!
I originally found this character question sheet by a reblog from @anxiouspineapple99 months ago - go check out their work, it’s incredible! See the og character question post by @shiny-self-shipping here.
See the post about Bryn and Hunter's dynamic here!
Tumblr media
Who makes the other blush all the time and who finds it adorable?
Bryn makes Obi-wan blush more
Who sings in the shower?
They both do, but Bryn does so in a quieter voice, Obi-wan belts with his whole chest in the 'fresher.
What would their song to each other be?
From Bryn to Obi-wan: Happy Accidents by Saint Motel
From Obi-wan to Bryn: Like Real People Do by Hozier
Who embarrasses the other in public with kisses and pet names?
Not that they can be super openly affectionate, Obi-wan is the flirt master of the Jedi Order, so he is a little more touchy than Bryn in public (a hand on the small of her back, a quick shoulder pat/rub, fixing her hair, wiping something off her cheek). And of course he calls her 'my darling,' people who know them turn a blind eye or assume it's just their long-standing relationship as working Jedi and Obi-wan's innate flirtiness.
Who curses, and who reprimands the other for it?
Bryn uses true swears more (kark, kriff, etc.) Obi-wan uses more moderated swears (blast, etc.) Neither really reprimands about it.
What small quirks do they love about each other?
Bryn was always forgetting/losing her comm device. Eventually when the Clone Wars started, Obi-wan got her a conducting headset so she would literally be wearing her comm and couldn't lose it as easily. Obi-wan always leaves his tea mugs laying around half-finished, and he never uses a coaster (it's tea rings everywhere, but Bryn loves it)
Who makes the other laugh more?
Bryn makes Obi-wan laugh more during daily life with little to no effort. Obi-wan makes Bryn laugh more through intentional actions when he can tell she needs a distraction/pick me up.
Who gets jealous easier?
Neither really get jealous. They are both secure in their relationship to one another and are highly dedicated to their duties as Jedi. Bryn and Obi-wan also encouraged poly relationships with Cody and Hunter. Maybe Obi-wan gets jealous because Anakin listens to Bryn only a little bit more than him?
How did they know they were right for each other?
They came to the temple as younglings at the same time and basically grew up together. They always had an innate bond where they could sense how the other was feeling. They have a long history of working missions together and when Obi-wan admitted his feelings for Bryn (Freudian slip when they were protecting Duchess Satine), Bryn realized she felt the same. They both know duty comes first, but each other is a close second.
Who brings up the subject of kids first?
Kids were never on the table. That doesn't happen for Jedi. They do consider Anakin their child in a way, since Bryn (in my au) was the one to discover Anakin while she was with Obi-wan and Qui-gon rescuing Queen Amidala. Qui-gon was originally going to give Bryn Anakin as a youngling, but when he died, the Council ruled Obi-wan would take him since Qui-gon was the only Jedi Master present at Anakin's discovery and Obi-wan was Qui-gon's successor.
Who's adorable when they're sleepy, and who gets grumpy and irritable?
Obi-wan isn't super cuddly in his sleep, but he is very touchy in the morning and refuses to get out of bed (not a morning person) He'll be grumpy until he gets at least one cup of tea before 0500. Bryn is moreso cuddly before bed/during the night, but she won't mind a few morning cuddles before bringing Obi-wan his tea and getting a strong cup of kaf for herself.
Who's more protective?
Neither is super protective, they know each other can handle themselves. Bryn perhaps worries about Obi-wan more since he has Anakin to worry about.
How do they express their feelings (Words, visual art, a song, etc.)?
They have an inside joke that started when Bryn came to help Obi-wan and Qui-gon rescue Queen Amidala. When Bryn left to go into Mos Eisley, Obi-wan gave her a single Republic Credit and asked for a souvenir. "It doesn't matter what it is so long as it's you that brings it back." Bryn never got a sourvenir, but instead gave Obi-wan the credit back when they parted ways and asked for a souvenir. They continued the tradition, handing the same credit off, but sometimes there will be a little trinket from whatever world they were off on too.
Where would they go on a 3am adventure?
They are both animal lovers. They'll often sneak away to stroll through the temple stables or the base kennels to dote on the animals.
Who has a hobby only the other knows about?
Obi-wan is actually fairly talented with crochet. He originally picked it up because he rescued a loth kitten that was half frozen to death and he made it a little blanket (it was super lumpy and misshapen) but now he'll crochet little beanies for the tubie clones, or blankets for Jedi younglings, or meditation mats/pillows. It's a very meditative practice for him and the tactile feel of the yarn is grounding for him.
Bryn is extremely gifted with accents and impressions. She has put on accents for undercover assignments, but only Obi-wan has heard her impressions. She did it one night randomly after Obi-wan had a bad day and her impression of an exchange between Commander Fox and the Chancellor had him crying from laughter.
How do they hype each other up?
They'll make sarcastic jabs at each other either before or after debriefing meetings, or even on-mission to break the tension/pressure that comes with being a Jedi General. It reminds them to not be so hard on themselves in the most serious time of their lives. If the receiver makes a jab back, then the instigator knows they're okay, if not, then that's a cue for a private check-in later.
Who picks flowers for the other?
Obi-wan picks the flowers (he has no idea what species they are) and gives them to her as a game. Bryn identifies them (a niche interest of hers) she is never wrong.
Which one wears the "I'm with stupid" t-shirt?
Obi-wan, but only because Bryn gave it to him to wear around Anakin.
Who's the better dancer?
Surprisingly, (perhaps not) Obi-wan. Bryn can hold her own, both in lively dancing at 79's and in a ballroom, but Obi-wan is shockingly light on his feet and a master of hip grinding.
Who infodumps and who listens with heart eyes?
Obi-wan infodumps about the weirdest things, Bryn listens and laughs along at how passionate he gets about different topics. Obi-wan is definitely a war history buff and the galaxy has had a lot of war so the info never ends.

hey if you got some time wanna try writing a fight scene with jaune vs one of the rwby girls (or all four) where they're faster and stronger and more skilled than him but our boy's wearing a literal ton in armor and gear and has a great timing to negate their speed.
on rwby's end we got ruby who's high mobility means that it's damn near impossible to hit her with a timed strike because she gets to set the tempo,
yang who's needs to be taken down in a single blow to ensure her semblance doesn't heal and empower her
blake who can use her clones to take a hit even when jaune does manage to time his hits right,
and weiss who can control the battlefield with her dust usage and can summon fighters to do all the dirty work for her.
the main issue is that all four of them have huge egos and can be tricked into not fighting the right way pretty easily if they even think to fight properly against jaune.
if you do, do the fight scene, would ya mind showing us whichever girl(s) he fought swallowing their pride to ask jaune for pointers afterward?
Ruby: Uh, are you sure about this, Jaune?
Jaune: I have to know where I'm at, Ruby.
Ruby: Yeah, but I don't want you to get hurt. Like, the last time we fought-
Jaune: Was at Beacon, and that was with food. This time, we have our weapons.
Ruby: Not making a strong case for this.
Jaune: Please, Ruby? For old time's sake?
Ruby: (Sigh) Fine, but if it gets to be too much-
Jaune: I'll stop you.
The ground crunched under Ruby's boots as she widened her stance, slightly crouching. 'Like a spring' she thought to herself. Her grip on Crescent Rose tightened as she stared down her friend from across the arena. In a blink, the fight began.
Jaune charged forward, his sword and shield in hand. Ruby lept towards him, her scythe swinging wide from her side. He spun on his heel, catching her blade on his shield and using his momentum to carry his blade into her.
Ruby split into a flurry of petals and reformed behind Jaune. Her scythe shifted to it's rifle form and fired a shot into Jaune, nailing him in the back. He stumbled, but caught himself without falling on his knee. He turned and ran after Ruby as she land. Shifting again, Ruby ran at Jaune, swinging her scythe, keeping Jaune on the defensive back foot as she spun, the blade's size and momentum knocking Jaune's shield off by a few inches. He rolled backwards, shaking his arm.
Ruby: Need a break?
Jaune: I was about to ask you the same thing.
Ruby and Jaune ran towards each other again, but Jaune changed his tactics. He swung at Ruby, keeping shield out further than usual. Ruby stepped back, pointing Crescent Rose's muzzle at Jaune. He followed through, thrusting his sword forward while bring his shield closer.
Ruby fired, hitting Jaune square in his shoulder. He grunted, but continued his charge forward. Ruby petal burst to his side, swinging her scythe down onto him. Jaune caught the scythe's blade on his, then twirled himself along the shaft. Once he was in front of Ruby, he smashed his shield against her, knocking her to the ground.
She rolled backwards, but carefully climbed to her feet. Holding Crescent Rose tight to her chest, she panted from the surprisingly heavy strike from Jaune. Well, not too surprising, since he outsized her twice over. Worst yet, she could feel herself low on aura, while Jaune walked closer, taking a deep breath, and restored his.
Jaune: Can you keep going?
Ruby: Just... a sec...
Jaune: (Amps her aura) How about now?
Ruby: (Rubs her head) I still have a headache.
Jaune: (Chuckles) How about we break for lunch? My treat.
Ruby: It's always your treat.
Jaune: I'm trying a low sodium diet. I can't live on salt, Ruby.
Ruby: My food isn't that bad.
---------------------------------------------------
Weiss: I hope you're ready, Jaune, because I won't be going easy on you.
Jaune: I'd prefer you didn't, actually.
Weiss: If you insist, but just remember that you asked for this.
Jaune: How could I ever forget?
Jaune and Weiss took positions across from each other, swords in hand. Jaune gripped his firmly, heart pounding with anticipation. This is a woman who's been honing her craft since who knows when. He only picked up the sword a few years ago.
Neither moved from their positions, save for Weiss dragging her toe behind her, shifting her body to a fencing position. Jaune brought his shield close as he stepped forward. Rushing in would only get themselves hurt.
Jaune lightly jabbed his sword forward. Weiss easily knocked his blade aside and thrusted into his shoulder. He reeled back in pain, but never lost his grip. Blinking through the pain, he watched Weiss shift forward.
Weiss: That was your only warning.
Jaune: Noted.
He rushed forward, shield moving to cover his shoulder. With a wide swing, he opened himself to catch Weiss' rapier and knock it away. However, Weiss saw this coming and stepped back, lunging law and forward into his open guard. Jaune retreated, slapping his sword down against her blade, then swung an elbow for her face.
Weiss fell backwards, but quickly lept to her feet. He gave her an apologetic chuckle, shrugging his shoulders. She gave her own wry smile, lunging again. She aimed low and struck his thighs, stepped back and shot a round of fire dust at him.
Jaune stood firm, holding his shield up to block the attack. He lowered his defense and found Weiss charging him. He was about strike when he saw the glyph at her feet. In response, he held guard and watched as she soared through the air above him, her body turned to face him as she spun mid-air, her legs over her head.
He turned as she landed behind him and struck the ground, spying a glyph spiraling beneath. He turned and saw a massive construct of ice, summoned to life by his opponent.
Weiss: Do you yield?
Jaune exhaled, his skin glowing as his semblance restored his aura. He gave a chuckled as he gripped Crocea Mors tighter.
Jaune: Do you?
---------------------------------------------------
Blake: Are you ready?
Jaune: Uh, that depends. Does this count as us hanging out?
Blake: Why wouldn't it?
Jaune: Well, when was the last time we hung out together?
Blake: Last week. Remember?
Jaune: Huh. Really? Just the two of us?
Blake: I'm sure it'll come to you, eventually.
Blake ran forward, keeping herself low, arms close to her side. Jaune swiped with his shield, but his momentum carried him through the shadow, forcing him off balance. He turned to see her charge again, weapon in hand. She lept into him, kicking herself off his shield into the air.
She threw her blade at Jaune, who stepped away and stood ready for her to come down. Her descent was preluded by gunshots as her weapon shifted to it's submachinegun form, peppering Jaune where he stood. He held up his shield, covering his face. She tugged on the ribbon, pulling herself to the ground.
Jaune approached her, earning him another dose of gunfire as Blake unloaded the rest of her magazine on him. He held up his shield as he stalked forward, his sword at his side and ready to swing. Blake stood, switching her weapon to it's ninjato form. He swung, missing her entirely, earning him a strike in the shoulder from the girl.
He swung out to the side, missing her again, black smoke rising from the fading shadow. Jaune stepped away, keeping his guard up as he locked eyes on her. She stalked towards him, and on her face was a smile.
Jaune: I remember now. We were watching that ninja show together.
Blake: Ninjas of Love, yes.
Jaune: Yeah, then I said I liked it, and you started smiling. Just like you are now.
Blake: I'm not smiling.
Jaune: Not now, but you were a second ago.
Blake: No, I wasn't.
Jaune: Yeah, you were. You're having fun, aren't?
Blake: Shouldn't we be fighting?
Jaune nodded and breathed out, his aura refilling. He stepped forward to Blake and put a hand on her shoulder. She visibly relaxed as her aura was restored significantly. She had used her clones too frivolously. She needed to rely on them less. As he stepped away, Blake put her next plan into action.
Rushing forward, she jumped into Jaune. He swatted at her with his shield, but had to spin on his heel when Blake swapped herself with a clone, this time made of stone. She capitalized on his off balance and struck him from behind. She ducked away from another sword strike, and thrusted into his thigh.
Jaune stepped away, giving Blake room to jump again. This time, however, Jaune ducked aside as she swung at him. Using her ice clone, she trapped Jaune's sword as he thrusted at her. As she ran into his guard, he swung the clone into her, knocking her to the ground. She jumped to her feet, panting.
Blake: This is fun.
Jaune: Right? I haven't had a workout like this in, well, ever!
Blake: Well, I'm glad you're enjoying this, and not playing unfair.
Jaune: How would I play unfair?
Blake: You could amp your aura without amping mine.
Jaune: Oh... Yeah, I could! Totally! Do. That.
Blake: You didn't of it, did you?
Jaune: (Sighs) No, I didn't.
---------------------------------------------------
Yang: You ready to rock, Vomit Boy?
Jaune: Uh, not really. I mean, you are the best fighter on your team.
Yang: Aw! You're so sweet! Too bad it's not gonna save you from this savage beating.
Jaune: Oh boy.
Yang wasted no time, charging head on into Jaune. She swung a fist into Jaune's guard, knocking his shield away. In response, he swung down with his sword, but blocked it with a backhand and used her free fist to fire a shot into his ribs. He coughed as he rolled backwards.
Jaune groggily stood to his feet, shaking off the pain. Yang giggled across the arena, cooing taunts at him. With a sharp exhale, he reset his stance. He walked towards her, guard up and sword ready.
Yang tittered again before ducking low and launching herself to his flank, coming in like a bullet. He swung around and blocked, then followed with another sword swing at her. She bobbed away, entering his guard. He stepped back, forcing her to a shot he was grateful was empty.
Yang pressed in again, but this time, Jaune pushed her strike inward with a shield. On her flank, Jaune swung down. Yang took the hit and rolled forward, grunting. She stretched her shoulder with a grin.
Yang: That's one for you and... fifteen for me?
Jaune: Ah- Fifteen?!
Yang: Well, I did hit you with a buckshot round.
Jaune: Has anyone ever told you you're the worst?
Yang: Do you mean today, or just my team, or something else entirely?
Jaune: Ugh... You're the wo-
Yang: What? Am I so awesome you can't finish a sente-
Yang and Jaune both looked down in horror at the ground between them. Jaune's horror intensified as he gulped and looked at Yang. Yang's horror shifted to righteous fury as her eyes became red with a blink and her hair shone like the sun. Between them, lie thin, yellow strands of Yang's hair.
Jaune stepped back, holding his guard especially high and close as Yang stepped closer. With a single punch, Jaune was sent rolling backwards. He didn't want to imagine what would have happened if he didn't have his shield to block that.
Yang launched herself at him, firing her buckshot rounds each time. What Jaune couldn't block, he dodged, and what couldn't be dodged was blocked. He lept away and Yang fired another round. When it clicked, she fired another, only for it to click as well.
Upon hearing the clicks, Jaune rushed forward, striking Yang with his shield. Stunned, Yang stumbled a bit, and Jaune wasted no time striking her his his sword. When she swung back, he stepped away before stepping in and striking again.
Yang held up a hand, forcing Jaune to pause.
Jaune: You doin' alright, Yang?
Yang: Yeah. Yeah, just, uh... tired.
Jaune: Your aura did get kind low. And you are coming down from your super mode.
Yang: Ha ha... Super mode? What, like some kind of video game?
Jaune: Kind of. You need a break?
Yang: Yeah. Then, I'm gonna kick your butt twice as hard.
Jaune: Heh heh. I'm looking forward to it.

what's your stance on the jedi as a culture? i feel like fanon likes to emphasize their peacekeeper/generals broken situation with them going "we shouldn't be doing this but if we don't the clones will be hurt worse" but that really isn't the vibe i get from canon. in the movies the clones were fully intended to be "flesh droids" but tcw made them into actual characters and either way the jedi are in this bizarre situation without seeming to mind all that much about the clones. i feel like a lot of fanon needs to be kinder to jedi culture and philosophy, but often the other side spills over into acting like their pre-66 situation is anywhere near the plight of the clones and that the jedi are allies in their struggle, which is just canonically untrue. it's never shown that the jedi give a damn about clone rights beyond the absolute bare minimum of verbally recognizing them as people with names. idk i'm rambling but i would like collective fanon to stop jerking it to uwu always in pain obi-wan "the clones find out about his tragic bandomeer backstory and are appalled at him being a child soldier even though they're child soldiers" kendonowrong even if i'm rather fond of the character myself because of nostalgia
also people overemphasize anakin being a former slave when that literally has no effect on any canon after the phantom menace
Yeah I hate to get into the peakeeper/violence thing with the Jedi because a whole bunch of it looks like semantics anyways, and it's clear a lot of people are speaking past each other when they do (like peacekeep as in absolutely no violence or peace keep as inclusive of defensive/protective violence).
also the Jedi and the clones aren't on the same level at all lol. The Jedi aren't being oppresed--were they misled? Yeah. Were they slaves to any form of government or ruling class or even just a couple people? Far from it. And the Jedi don't care about the plight of the clones nearly as much as the narrative, writers, and most fans want us to believe. Obiwan was definitely dismissive of a clones' death in the Citadel Arc, Anakin keeps making reckless plans that definitely get his men killed at higher rates than other Jedi, and let's not forget that people died for his droid. He went out of his way to get R2D2 back and clones definitely died for it.
obiwan was a child soldier? lmao i didn't know that. its funny cause you'd think obiwan and anakin's backstories would inform their opinion of and treatment of the clones in at elast some way but it doesn't do that at all.

Arc 01: REUNION
::CODY::
I place an arrow to my bowstring and send it flying. I got the animal right on its head. I beam in pride. With Meeko hunting everything in sight, I was happy to take one down on my own. Even if I was just on a blind waiting for game to pass by. I climbed down the tree I was perched on and picked up the dead, fallen raccoon. I went over to the red head sitting on a tree stump.
"Lori, Lori! I got a raccoon!"
Lori smiles at me in a way that seems like I got something better. He's always encouraging like that. "Good job, Code." he ruffles my hair. "and you got it at the head, that's a good shot." He takes it from me and put it and places it inside a burlap sack along with a few of Meeko's other kills.
Lori scrunches up his nose though when he did that. The smile earlier was just for me. He eats meat like the rest of us but he never really liked killing the creatures himself, and mentioned something about how he used to be something called a 'Vegan' or something. I didn't understand it before, but he told me it was something like empathy... I don't really know what that means either, Lori only told me it was like knowing how the animals feel. He said it was the same way we didn't like it when we were attack by Rabids and how these animals must have not wanted to be attacked by us. It was confusing because while we all know Rabids are bad, Lori tells me that it didn't mean we were bad for needing to eat them to survive and something about survival of the fittest, uh, that meant the instinct that drives us to eat any animals we could. It's confusing. But I get it a little bit and also try to kill them instantly so they wouldn't fill pain before they died. Lori understood that it couldn't be helped, we needed meat for food. While we never ran out of food because Kytes did have gardens, it wouldn't be filling. And I don't like veggies much either. So if I only had to eat that forever, I'd go rabid.
I watch Lori take his knife and pull out an apple. He starts to cut it in half so we can share. I stare at his face and start playing this mind game I think to myself, pretending Lorri was his brother and giving him stuff he might say instead. Right now, Lori might say Here, let's share it. While Meeko might say Hehe, wanna see who eats his share the fastest? And he'd give me the slightly bigger share. He would pretend its so he can win, but he would really want me to accept the bigger half without me feeling guilty. I pretend I don't know that because I really like apples. I stop feeling guilty when Corrin explain to me that it's a way of showing how you care.
Whenever I play this game, it makes me realize how identical Lori and Meeko actually are. It was hard to remember that, since whenever you hear them and see how they act, the differences were more obvious that people easily forget the similarities, like the same red hair and the same yellow eyes. Though their hair styles were giveaways too, since Meeko's was usually tousled and sticking out while Lori was much more clean looking, the ends near his neck curving slightly, though their attitudes were more of stand outs so them looking alike wasn't really obvious.
"Here, let's share it Code." Lori gives me my half. "this one's yours."
Nailed it, I smile proudly to myself. "Thanks, Lori!"
"Anytime," Lori chuckles, ruffling my hair.
I liked that feeling a lot, it really helps me relax. Still, no matter how relax we might feel at the moment, our instincts were always sharp, Lori's more so than mine since he's older. He was the one who carried me and got us out of the way just in time as Meeko bursts through some bushes, riding on top of a Rabid Sheep.
An actual sheep is actually not so scary, they're real fluffy and cute, sometimes a little stupid. I was watching over our flocks, the ones we take care of for clothes, with Jonah when a rabid wolf tried to eat one lamb. While Jonah fought back as I watched the flock, I can say I was more rattled than they were. They kept eating grass the entire time!
As for any animal's brain internally affected by radiation, they go Rabid. Unlike people, they don't die instantly though. Well, most don't anyway. Any Rabid creature is potentially bad, even a Rabid Squirrel or Mouse since they usually attack in numbers. On the safe side, we don't eat them. It's easy to tell the difference of a Normal and a Rabid. The Normal types are... Well, normal. While the Rabids are colossal, scary, sometimes deformed and really smart.
But leave it to Meeko to make it look fun to take them on.
"Woo-hoo! I got you now you giant cream puff!" Meeko laugh. "Loreal, Coco Bean, clear the way!"
Meeko duplicates himself. The clone went in front of the sheep. It's kinda funny that was his power when he already has an official look alike, except his actual clone acts way different than he does. The sheep got confused long enough for Meeko to jump down, landing on his feet safely. Then, he took out his double-edged saber, pulling it back like one would with a baseball bat and—
Well, Lori closes my eyes before I can see more. Meeko is pretty brutal when he hunts, and he's got a lot of bravery. I hope I can be as courageous someday like these two, and that's one of their common traits. I really look up to them a lot and I really like them, but I guess that doesn't really say a lot since I like everyone. Trey used to tell me that I would only hate an enemy. So far, I never had a chance to see if that were true.
"Okay, you can look now." Lori pulls his hand back.
I run towards Meeko, "That was awesome! Well... I didn't see all of it, but I bet it was awesome!"
"You know it, Coco Bean!" He ruffles my hair. Lori approaches us and I tell Meeko about my own raccoon. He congratulates me, saying if I keep that up, I could hunt just as hardcore as him.
"Woah, now let me stop you right there." The other Meeko interrupted—and I mean Lori, not a clone. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves or even hope that. I think one hardcore hunter is enough, and sometimes one too many... And I mean that almost literally." He smirks. He crossed his arms and look down at the dead sheep with a grimace. "now that you had your fun, please tell me you at least remembered to hunt actual game we can take home and eat. I'll admit, that sheep is larger than three of us put together even if it were a Normal."
I kick it a bit. "If there were Normals that size. I don't think we can even get a thing that big through the hotel doors."
I guess I should explain the hotel bit.
That's our home base right now. It's not a permanent settlement, though. We have a whole bunch of base because we can't stay in them for more than four months and a half. Actually, the a half part is the longest we can last in any base. Things change around an awful lot where we live. I don't know if it's the same with the rest of the world because we can't travel all over it, and Rhys only has guess that it might not be as bad as ours. And he knows most things. Rhys called our part of the surface, our division, Surface R. In other words, SURFACE RADIOACTIVE. He told me about the radiation triggered something in the atmosphere, something called Mana, in a time before I was even born. He said when something from outer space came crashing down and changed everything, it landed in our division, back then called a country, so the Mutated Mana altered people like us; have spread most around here to the point that it gave us unique abilities. I don't know why it's called unique when everyone up here pretty much has it, but Rhys said it wasn't normal to have these abilities in the time before I was born.
I don't get much with the rest of his explanation, but I do understand that the past must be really different from now. I also know that we are in a location where things always change. It can be perfectly safe one minute then suddenly everything's chaotic a second later. Also, the other things that got loose Mana energy doesn't like us much. So when one area gets too dangerous, we move to another. They never stay dangerous forever, so we can come back later. That's what scouts are for, they visit the bases ahead of time and check which is the safest to move into. Right now, the hotel is perfectly safe. But since things always change... Well, you'll never know when danger will strike. I don't remember if there was a time that we were without risk of being in danger. Because even at night, while we're sleeping, if the sentries sound the alarm, we have to prepare for action. That's why we've gotten used to trusting and relying on each other.
It keeps us all alive.
Meeko waves off Lori's words. "Yeah, did that first." he gives me another burlap sack, and I tip over because of the weight. "Easy kills."
"What do you have in here?" Lori picks up my arrows and places them back inside the quiver before helping me with the sack.
Meeko shrugs. "The usual. Three foxes, five rabbits, some squirrels. A turkey and half a boar for bacon." We stare at him for a full second. "I had to give up the other half so it could fit the bag since this big guy suddenly attacked."
"Wow," Lori whistles, impressed but not all that surprise. This was his brother after all. "that's a new record. Good hunting."
Meeko scowls. "Good? That's excellent hunting!"
"Except you only got a half animal for bacon. Plus, your ego needs deflating." Lori laughs. "Well, it's a Rabid, but since it's a sheep, we can't let the wool go to waste. It's sturdier than a Normal's wool, after all." He takes his knife and approaches the lifeless sheep, getting to work.
We help him out so we can finish faster and head back. Halfway through, though, I hear leaves rustling, feeling a chill down my spine, and then the thumping vibration from the ground.
Lori must've felt it too. "Cody, Meeko, take a flank!"
I take up Lori's left side, notching an arrow and Meeko takes his right, raising his sword. Then other three rabid sheep come bursting into the glade. I send the arrow flying but it didn't get the eye. Not that it'd be an instant kill, but I could've at least partially blind it. Rabids aren't easily taken down like regulars. What Meeko did earlier might've been an extreme. They weren't as big and colossal as the one he took down but still, about seven feet tall and who-knows-wide doesn't fall under small either.
"Uh oh. I think the one I killed was a mommy..."
I look at him. "Oh. But Meeko, I don't think she could tell her kids not to eat us. She'd probably help them."
Meeko gives me a weird look. "Er, that really wasn't my point..." he says.
A sheep charges towards us. We spread out. But I stumble on my feet.
"Cody! Look out!"
I look up, barely able to shoot my arrow right on the sheep's eye. Thankfully, my arrow had already been placed and it was close enough for me to get a good, clear shot. But I'm unable to get a next arrow ready when the sheep jumps over head.
"Cody!" Meeko swoops by and carries me out of the way.
I hug him around the neck. "Thank you, Meeko! That was scary!"
"Meeko," Lori comes over. "three on three isn't a fair fight if it's against Rabids. That's your cue!"
Meeko looks a little embarrassed. "Ehe, about that..." he holds up his watch. "I might've overdone it a bit earlier during the hunt and my POWER GAUGE is on full bars..." suddenly, his watch sparks and the green-lit screen turned black. "...aaand now the battery's dead..."
"Are you serious now?!" Lori looks amazed... but not the good kind.
"Don't be mad!"
"Well, I can't be happy!"
I didn't have time to pay attention to this argument because I realize I was missing something. The lace that kept my pacifier around my neck was gone! I know I'm ten years old and a little sucker is not something I need, but it was the last and only thing I ever got from my parents. I was a baby when I was still with them. I don't know who they were and what parents even were until Corrin explained it to me. I may not have known them, but I do know that if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be alive and that they must've loved me because that's what they do. So even if a baby item is all I have left as proof that they existed, then I can't lose it!
I scan the area and found it a few meters far and raced to retrieve it.
"You know, you can be so... Wait, what is... CODY?! No, wait!"
"Huh?!"
I pick it up. "Got it!" In the next instant, I'm shoved away and I see Lori being body slammed by one of the sheep. I gasp. "NOO!"
"LORI! No, no, no!" Meeko screams after me, rushing over. But then he is held back to fight off the other two. "GET LOST, DAMN IT!"
I look at the sheep on top of Lori and wait. He doesn't use his powers. He doesn't go through it even as the sheep is tired and doesn't move. It only means he's hurt.
"Lori!"
Then it happened. I felt goosebumps and the sheep floated to the air. But it's hard to keep it there. Meeko got to escape the other two sheep, carrying Lori who looked injured with some scratch marks. But he was still conscious. They were out of the way and I mentally dropped the sheep. My knees buckles up and I collapse. The two sheep went for me. I didn't have the strength to move.
"CODY!"
Then there's fire and I felt the heat. When my vision clears, the animals were burnt and I see our leader stepping into the glade.
"TREY!" I bound up towards him, limping a bit. I wrap my arms around his lower torso. "Lori's hurt!"
Trey pat my head. "I know, I see his wounds. But let's not panic, kiddo." We walk towards the twins. Trey helps Meeko support Lori. Then, he instructs me. "Take the sacks you can carry and get them back to the base. Alert Rhys, Code 4 for A1."
"What's Code 4 and A1 again?" I've just taken up lessons and still get terms mixed up.
"Rabid Animals. A1 is Area 1."
"Got it!"
I take a burlap sack, Meeko's, and run as fast as I can despite the extra weight. The last words I hear behind me are from Lori. I didn't know what it mean so it probably didn't matter.
"Don't tell him anything."
