So I’m p sure you do this to promote education and to stop misinformation, but why do you engage with anti-vegan shithead carnists like sebbiesheepie, agro-carnist or dairyisntscary? I’ve tried in the past, especially for the above listed reasons but I’m found that engagement with them is less productive than talking to a wall and usually it comes with harassment and death threats sent to me from their fans. I guess, why would you subject yourself to such idiocy on their part? Also wanna give a shout out of a big “FUCK YOU” to these anti-vegan blogs and others like them 🥰

I guess as a follow up to what I just sent. What I mean to say is IMHO it’s a waste of time to spend on those cretins, and your mental and emotional well-being far outweigh their smooth brains. ❤️ 2/2

honestly i struggle with this, and i'm not sure i've found the best way to do it yet. but like you said, its to put some real information in a sea of lies and misinformation. i definitely don't think i will change their mind, some of them are definite trolls and the other ones...

but i do think its important to spread information where there is misinformation. its not for the person spreading the lies, its for the "audience". maybe some person lurking on here is going to scroll through the notes and see my reblog and look through it, see if my arguments and sources are more compelling. and that's why i do it.

i try to make some rules, i wont (generally) engage with a post that has very few notes (no point), and i wont engage with straight up trolls. but right now i feel like its important to be a counter voice to that i guess? i don't always follow my own rules, and i should do that more though :D

but also like...it doesn't super drain me atm? i have a bunch of resources that i kind of just copy, and i like scientific research (writing a paper on climate change and veganism for uni rn). and i want to help vegans find ways to argue against these things, to have resources and facts to use when they encounter such arguments. actually thinking of maybe making a quick resource post (though @acti-veg has so many resources, not sure it is necessary haha)

and i honestly could not care less about the anons lol. ignore and delete.

but thank you for pointing it out, this is definitely something i'm still figuring out, and i always appreciate input/counterarguments on this issue!!

Honestly, I think it’s ridiculous that people are accusing you of sounding mean/rude etc. sometimes I think you’re still too nice to the rude anons and I feel like a lot of this is passive aggressive on their part. They come at you because they think you’re an ‘insider’ fan and they’re jealous, and if you come back defensively, then they accuse you of being rude blah blah blah. If these people are making your experience on tumblr a negative one then just ignore those asks and enjoy yourself bb!

Hmm idk I mean it wouldn’t cross my mind to go after someone because they know some things I don’t? So they probably have a point somewhere in telling me I should be kinder, I know I can be short when I answers asks because I get so many and sometimes the same ones every other day so it gets a bit tiring...

I don’t think you’re rude, I think sometimes you get defensive because you’ve been getting the same questions over and over again and you must get tired. And you’ve talked about having insomnia so you must also be physically tired on top of mentally. That’s normal, we’re all humans. Don’t worry about it.

Yeah it’s true, I do get defensive when I’m more tired. Sometimes when I need to vent, I read my inbox outloud to a friend - the asks I don’t publish I mean - and it helps but sometimes I don’t have anyone next to me to do that with so I get cranky when I see people prying into the cast’s lives, asking personal questions, things like that. It’s hard to ignore when you read the same disturbing things every couple of days. Thank you ♥

It's just that I think people are frustrated that you know so much without sharing, and maybe also the fact that you continue to think you're a normal fan, even though you're clearly "in". I don't know, I'm trying to understand... I think it might be jealousy as well.

The thing is, I can’t say for now how I’ve come to know some stuff because it would spoil way too much and I don’t know if I’ll even be able to ever. I’m not really “in”, that’s the thing. I am a normal fan, as normal as a fan who’s lucky enough to live in Paris and who could go to a lot of events - and that’s a couple hundreds of us. I don’t know how much the international fandom is aware of that but David and Niels and the cast know hundreds of us by name just because we were lucky enough to meet them several times. I’m not really more “in” than those other people. Some from the cast have not a clue who I am at all and others only know my @ on instagram because I send them the pics. I’m a bit closer to some for reasons I can’t talk about. The team got a lot of complaints about everything always happening in Paris and some fans ending up being more priviledged than others. I’m hoping there will be more events outside of Paris, maybe screenings or something in the future so it doesn’t feel as ~Parisian elite~ as last year.

I think you’ve always been receptive when people came to you with a different opinion and from what I saw, you’re always willing to learn. Some people are just too entitled and come barging in and that’s when you raise you hackles. It’s not really on you, it’s hard to be kind to everyone when people don’t always deserve it.

bonsoir tumblr grandma! 💫 in my humble opinion, you do not come off as rude. I just think sometimes people tend to read what they wanna read and make the worst out of it. Plus, the whole Even season is a really touchy subject because everyone would love one and when such announcements of possibles seasons happen, they can't help but be hopeful. I know how much people must be upset to see their hopes crushed, I was disappointed too back when I first heard about it, and my hopes were not that high to begin with since David had said before Eliott wasn’t considered as main. I get asks every week about Eliott being main, almost every gifset I make will have a tag about how whatever is clearly a reference to Eliott being main and I’m just like... let it go. Or talk about it on your own posts. I’m sad it’s not happening. Don’t rub it in my face, you know? I didn’t say anything for months and accepted it was the way it would be so I couldn’t complain but then Henrik mentioned it to someone at HOS2 and I thought that finally those asks and comments would stop but they don’t and it’s very tiring. I don't think you're rude and i don't know you irl it's just that some of your anons are creepy and acted so demanding like you owe us something and it pissed me off actually. Like those anon who asked something like you know this right? How you know abt this? Why you know the cast? I’m gonna say something I haven’t really shared in details before but it’s weighting on me. Some anons are really creepy, so I don’t publish them. For exemple, somebody found my spotify recently and through it found my old Facebook. My friends have sent me screenshots of people following them on their instagram after being tagged in my stories and they are always Skam stans, even when my friends have never posted about anything Skam related. Someone once went digging into my personal life so far that they could have ruined the theme of season 5 in september if they had decided to make what they had found public instead of sending me an ask about it. That shit is not okay. I blew up about this once last year and somebody told me “why do you make it sounds like we’re creepy fans of yours” and well, because some stuff IS creepy. I understand being curious but I will never share anything about the personal lives of the cast or anything that could spoil the seasons so I’d just like it if people stopped asking, you know? Thank you, love. yeah I’ve lost counts of how many times they’ve accidentally spoiled something at cons or screenings or in the background of ig stories, especially in the beginning. They are more careful now and some even let slip fake spoilers to see if it will spread (and by some I mean Axel after his play when he stays to talk to fans lmao). The fans who’ve learned stuff that way are usually super protective of the show though so nothing really spreads and that’s really nice to see - sorry Axel, joke’s on you ahah

You don’t know me but I saw you a lot at HOS2, I recognized you from your instagram. Every time I saw you, you were cuddling people, laughing, singing - I heard you sing with your friends and Maxence joining in, it was adorable! The cheers the cast let out when they saw you come up for the group pictures weren’t fake. You have an aura around you that brightens the room. I really hope this isn’t too weird of me to say. I don’t think you could ever be unkind. You wouldn’t have so many friends otherwise - I mean, it looked like you do - and the cast wouldn’t have reacted like that upon seeing you. That alone convinced me you were a good person.

This is sortve a personal question so no pressure if you don't have the spoons or aren't comfortable answering! I was just wondering, early into posting your fanfic and original fic, how did you deal with seeing views rise but not getting comments or kudos to use as feedback? If you experienced that? I recently started an original fic on A03 and I'm struggling a little with the anxiety of not knowing if anyone is enjoying it, even though I know I'm supposed to write for me. Love your work ❤️

Okay so, I think there’s two things going on here. Firstly, original fics on AO3 do terribly unless you already have a decent fandom or following (and not just on AO3, but off it, on Twitter or Tumblr or wherever people can follow you - so you can drum up interest or gauge how interested people are in your original writing). That’s just the way that is.

Let’s be clear, I never wanted to write original fiction on AO3, I didn’t make an AO3 account to do that, I just sort of ended up doing it, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone writing original fiction who wants that fiction to be discovered. Idk how I ended up here, but I’d be the first to say it’s not the smartest way to promote original fiction. (I have to say that, to beat all my author friends from telling me how much of an idiot I am for doing it this way, lmao, my only response is I love fandom and it’s fun).

The vast majority of readers on AO3 not only aren’t interested in reading original fiction on AO3, they actively go out of their way to avoid it.

There’s also things that a lot of fanfiction readers don’t like taking risks on: reading a story that’s only OCs (especially in the context of roleplay OCs, because authors don’t always work hard enough to make characters like this accessible to strangers, so what is fun between two people or a group of people, doesn’t read well to outsiders), reading stories that have too much exposition (not many people read fic for reams of exposition, though there are exceptions - but obvs this is what published fiction does that fanfic can generally skip), original short fics and drabbles (especially ones that aren’t explicit), etc.

When I first started posting Game Theory, less than 10% of of Shadows and Light active readers (i.e. people who comment and leave asks etc.) came over to try it. Tbh I think, initially, it may have even been like less than 5%. Eventually Game Theory came to stand on its own, but I had to work at that, over a long period of time (and I was frankly blessed with some truly amazing individuals who worked hard re: word of mouth, without my knowledge), and to this day my original fiction on AO3 still performs terribly compared to my fanfiction - I’m lucky it performs well overall, but if you compare kudos on say, The Golden Age that Never Was to like...The Ice Plague #2 or even Eversion, it’s pretty damning.

The upshot of all of that is...AO3 is already working against you when it comes to original fiction. It’s amazing that AO3 allows original fiction, and some people still think it shouldn’t.

Okay! Now to the actual second part, which is how to cope with just not getting any feedback at all. This is more complicated. Honestly, a huge chunk of what might be happening may all be down to how many readers respond to original fiction in general. Overall, multi-chaptered fics do better than oneshots, unless the oneshots are explicit PWP, for example. There are some exceptions, but you can bet that those exceptions are ‘author who is traditionally published put some side work on AO3 and already have a huge-ass fucking following.’ There are I think well over 17,600 original fics on AO3 that have zero kudos. That’s nearly 1/3 of all of them. You are not alone.

The second part is down to you. And this stuff I can’t answer, because this is more complicated. Some of it is going to be you sitting down and looking at the quality of the fic, or how much hard work you’ve done to promote it (i.e. are ppl on your social media interested, for example?), and how much work you’ve done to introduce strangers to your characters (remember, they don’t have the benefit of a TV show/movie/fandom to introduce the characters for you anymore), because just putting a fic in the world is not enough if you don’t have a fandom to attach it to, unless you’re somewhere like Wattpad (and even then, I daresay the number of fics that have no comments/faves is HUGE). There’s a reason publishers make the commissions they do, and it’s partly because they have access to readerbases who will take risks on what they’re publishing. AO3 doesn’t really have the same base for original fiction, it doesn’t even want to.

Some of it will be down to how much you’re enjoying writing the fic (if it’s meant to be ongoing). Could you keep putting chapters up with no feedback? I’ve done it before (back on LJ, when no one gave a shit about my writing lmao and in the earliest days when I didn’t promote it through any communities), but I’ve also pulled and stopped fics that didn’t do well enough, because I needed that sense of fandom collaboration to keep going. This is deeply personal. Sometimes the story alone is enough to keep you going. But creators do enjoy feedback, so sometimes it’s not, and that’s okay too. It makes it more painful in the moment, but it may make you more likely to grow in the direction of attracting more readers in the future, and growth is good.

Some of it will be time. How long has the fic been up for? A day? A week? A year? Almost half of the entire kudos on the Shadows and Light stories came once the story was finished. I’m not saying wait a year, obviously, I don’t know anyone that patient, I’m just saying...it takes time for people to discover things. It takes even more time if people have no signposts to follow, and since people use fandoms as signposts to find things on AO3 (when they’re not using highly individual kinks anyway), you can see how being in origfic sets you back. You have fewer signposts.

I’m not gonna lie. It’s hard. The metrics support that it’s hard. 17k fics with not a single kudos is no joke. Dealing with it isn’t easy. Generally speaking I get depressed for a good long time, and then I take a step back, remember that in the grand scheme of things this really doesn’t matter very much, make myself some tea and go outside to stare at trees and clouds (I am just Like That (TM)). And then I decide if the story is still worth it, if I need to take some time, or if I need to work on something else.

You go story by story, and you keep working at it, unless you decide you don’t want to anymore, and then you’ll find something else you enjoy just as much. It’s not an easy process, but I don’t think anyone who ended up writing ever ends up with an easy process, alas. I wish you luck out there in the word mines, it can be a hard journey sometimes.

yeah definitely!

so it starts with predatory recruitment. military recruiters visit high schools and sometimes even middle schools to normalize the idea that joining the military is no different from going to college. almost none of those kids can actually join, but they try to sell them on it anyway with talk of how cool it’ll be and what a badass it’ll turn you into, and stuff like that. the army even has even put out three T-rated video games about army life since 2007, the most recent in 2015.

it gets even more intense in high school, when they start contacting kids directly. when you take the SAT and ACT, your information automatically gets sent to recruiters and they start sending you recruitment literature that blends in really well with the letters you’re getting from colleges suggesting you apply.

then, once people are old enough to actually join up, the recruitment pitch shifts to more tangible offers with little to no intention of ever following through. one of the biggest selling points is the G.I. Bill, but it comes with a whole host of terms and conditions that no one ever mentions, which often results in the benefits being mostly (or even completely) unusable for a lot of people, with just under half of servicemembers ending up using any of it at all.

they also recruit heavily based on the idea that your time in the military will translate into work experience and make it easier to find a job when you get out, but most military equivalents to civilian jobs deal with highly specialized equipment that makes the experience irrelevant, and you don’t get any certifications or equivalencies.

another big draw is Tricare, which is, quite simply, the best insurance in the world. What they don’t tell you is that your dependents get a shitty knockoff, and you also get kicked over to that shitty knockoff as soon as they determine that whatever’s wrong means you won’t be returning to active duty. they want to protect their investment as long as it can fight for them, but beyond that, you can go fuck yourself. and that’s to say nothing of the nightmare that is the VA, which is infamous for multiple-month wait times for even basic care, which is very often poor quality when you eventually do get it.

once you’ve actually joined, a few things happen that the recruiter never mentioned. first and foremost, you’ve entered into a contract with the united states government, which means that any breach of that contract is a federal felony. in other words, everything in this post from here on out is 100% completely and totally unavoidable without utterly fucking up your life.

the second is that you are now subject to two entire sets of laws that, most likely, you had no idea existed until just now. lots of those laws are standard federal law that only applies to military personnel (title 10, mostly), but the rest are called the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). a lot of the ucmj is pretty straightforward stuff that you’d expect, like “it’s a crime to disobey orders” (Article 92) and the like, but there’s a ton of general conduct laws as well. for example Article 88 - Contempt Toward Officials, which says:

Any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Transportation, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.

in other words, if you’re an officer it is literally a crime to criticize the government, even in private and even if you’re not in uniform. more generally, though, all military personnel have their political activity severely restricted by a combination of articles 10, 2, and 18 of us code, DOD directives, and military regulations. from this article, here’s a list of some things that you’re not allowed to do if you’re in the military:

Participate in partisan political fundraising activities, rallies, conventions (including making speeches in the course thereof), management of campaigns, or debates, either on one’s own behalf or on that of another, without respect to uniform or inference or appearance of official sponsorship, approval, or endorsement. Participation includes more than mere attendance as a spectator.

Use official authority or influence to interfere with an election, affect the course or outcome of an election, solicit votes for a particular candidate or issue, or require or solicit political contributions from others.

Allow or cause to be published partisan political articles, letters, or endorsements signed or written by the member that solicits votes for or against a partisan political party, candidate, or cause. However, letters to the editor are allowed.

Serve in any official capacity with or be listed as a sponsor of a partisan political club.

Speak before a partisan political gathering, including any gathering that promotes a partisan political party, candidate, or cause.

Participate in any radio, television, or other program or group discussion as an advocate for or against a partisan political party, candidate, or cause.

Conduct a political opinion survey under the auspices of a partisan political club or group or distribute partisan political literature.

Perform clerical or other duties for a partisan political committee or candidate during a campaign, on an election day, or after an election day during the process of closing out a campaign.

Solicit or otherwise engage in fundraising activities in Federal offices or facilities, including military reservations, for any political cause or candidate.

March or ride in a partisan political parade.

Display a large political sign, banner, or poster (as distinguished from a bumper sticker) on a private vehicle.

Display a partisan political sign, poster, banner, or similar device visible to the public at one’s residence on a military installation, even if that residence is part of a privatized housing development.

Participate in any organized effort to provide voters with transportation to the polls if the effort is organized by or associated with a partisan political party, cause, or candidate.

Sell tickets for or otherwise actively promote partisan political dinners and similar fundraising events.

Attend partisan political events as an official representative of the Armed Forces, except as a member of a joint Armed Forces color guard at the opening ceremonies of the national conventions of the Republican, Democratic, or other political parties recognized by the Federal Elections Committee or as otherwise authorized by the Secretary concerned.

Make a campaign contribution to, or receive or solicit (on one’s own behalf) a campaign contribution from, any other member of the Armed Forces on active duty.

Any activity that may be reasonably viewed as directly or indirectly associating the Department of Defense or the Department of Homeland Security (in the case of the Coast Guard) or any component of these Departments with a partisan political activity or is otherwise contrary to the spirit and intention of this Directive shall be avoided.

most of that list comes from DoD Directive 1344.10 (full text here) and while there’s plenty of stuff you can do, politically, but almost all of it requires you to be either anonymous or passive about it. so now it’s illegal for you to do anything substantial toward changing policy in any way, and possibly also to even so much as complain about the president or call congress incompetent.

so now that you’ve been properly restricted (and remember, the only way out of this without a felony is with a DD214 (discharge paperwork)) you’re put to work. on the surface, it seems like any other job, but there’s subtle differences. for one thing, literally every person who’s gotten more raises than you is your boss and you have to do whatever they tell you unless it conflicts with what someone who’s gotten even more raises than them already told you to do.

your orders can also be literally anything that’s not illegal. if your boss at starbucks tells you to always stand on one foot while you work the register, you might do it for like an hour or two, but then you’d stop bothering and if your boss got upset about it then that would be unreasonable. if your CO tells you to always say the pledge of allegiance in Farsi, then it’s your responsibility to learn how to say it in Farsi and always do so until that CO or someone above them give you permission to say it in english again, and if you don’t, that’s a crime.

what that means is that if you get assigned to recruitment duty, you can and will be ordered to look and sound excited about being in the military as you tell 13 year olds they should join up after high school, and you will legally have to do it.

and all of this is without even mentioning the missions. combat, and the act of killing another human being, are traumatizing even in the most ideal of situations. if someone breaks into your home to attack you and you push them back and something heavy falls on them and kills them, that’s still a traumatic experience for you. even legitimate wars for good reasons against enemies that really do need to be stopped are horrifying experiences for everyone involved.

but when the war is bullshit and most of the casualties are civilians and you know all this and aren’t even allowed to say anything about it, let alone do anything about it? that combines with combat to royally fuck a person up.

this is the part where everyone who’s read this far gets ready to jump down my throat about how the people being bombed are the real victims and not the people dropping the bombs, so let me remind you that this anon was in response to a post i made that started with the words “The US Military is […] evil” and that im not in any way trying to say that the troops get the worst of it, just that they are being used and abused by the system.

because remember, those troops have been groomed to be recruited since they were five years old and asked their parents why they got veterans day off from kindergarten, and have been pursued more and more actively all the way up through high school. the military lured them in, is chewing them up, and will spit them out when it’s done with them without giving one single fuck about them.

and no matter how you cut it, that describes a victim.

im the storm chaser anon again Nikkiiii wdymmm ive been here since forever and have read everything in your master least at least once 😳 im just too shy to reveal myself but im sure you've come across me lurking in your blog. i was so excited to see that broken compass is in the same universe as the storm chaser series, i think i like it when stories are interwoven because well, life is a bit like that as well.

which brings me to something else, im currently reading the great Gatsby and i have to say that your writting reminds me of Fitzgerald's so so much, especially after you commented on the absence of dialogue from your fics(?) i noticed the same technique being used in the great Gatsby and was wondering whether you were inspired by him or not? i don't know, i find it intriguing, the omission of dialogue i mean, whether it's done on purpose or not i love it. it allows you to grasp the meaning behind words without having to deal with them which makes the story not only more interesting but also really unique in my eyes. you need dialogue in theatre or modern films but written text is something else entirely. while reading your fics, i can't help feeling that you explore and make the best use of aspects unique to written word, that's why i still believe that you're one of the best writters around here (and im saying this while having read almost everything you've recommended since i followed you 👀)

also the interwoven stories part reminds me of J.D. Salinger's short stories, sorry i said "which brings me to something else" and begun talking about something seemingly irrelevant, it's just that in my mind, Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye and The Great Gatsby resemble eachother a little and my brain skipped two "steps"

anyway, sorry i say a lot of things at once and remain silent for the next two months but im almost done i promise.

love knows not it's depth, i told you something similar when you first published it but i'll say it again, it's one of the most realistic pieces i've ever read and i love that. the fact that Kuroo is one of my favourite characters aside (Kuroo and Atsumu 💔) he was so well written !! like, it felt as though i was witnessing a couple in my circle or something of sorts, it did not feel like a manga character and im saying that as a compliment T^T

oh gosh - never apologise for rambling or dropping into my inbox, i always love love love to hear what my readers think about my stories or anything around the sun! im like you - life is rly interwoven (catcher in the rye, so nostalgic!!), so i feel like..idk it makes sense for me to write some stories in the same universe! i'm glad you enjoyed it - and...

thank YOU for reading all my work! you're far too sweet to me. but yes, that's what i try to get at with some of my works where i don't focus on dialogue as much - there's so much more that's unsaid and i like the subtlety of it, yknow? i don't know - i don't think im inspired by fitzgerald - i'm familiar with his works, but because of where i'm from (former british colony, taught by brit teachers), i don't focus so much on american modern literature, more like - british victorian lit / shakespeare yknow? but but but i went to take a quick peek when you mentioned him...and yeah you're right! like this line from Gatsby - “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” oh gods, that style of writing just gave me chills. thank you for the rec - i'll HAVE to check it out.

i personally feel really bad whenever ppl tell me im one of the best writers around cos i feel like such a fraud - i think im decent but like...argh. i think a lot of us suffer from imposter syndrome LOL.

oh gods, love knows not its depth. idk what possessed me when i wrote it because it just...flowed and i knew after i wrote it that...it was real, yknow? i cld see shades of it in my mother, with my parents' marriage, potential shades of it in my own marriage (if either of us choose not to put in the work), so i guess...writing it was really reflective of real life too! i don't often know whether im writing kuroo right, and i'm glad you liked it cos he's so complex? there are so many facets to him - his cockiness, his maturity, his kindness, his ambition, and it's so easy to just write him as a smirking caricature, and i was afraid of that.

i hope i hope i hope you like my kita fic - i just dropped a sneak peek of it, and i'm back on tumblr cos i just finished writing another bulk (my brain needs to rest, to be continued tomorrow!!!).
