also like. edmund as a character. his whole arc in tltwatw is about learning to think, to be thoughtful and kind and respectful when it's needed but not to let go of his independence. to follow orders when they're right instead of rebelling because he can, but to break those same orders when he knows it's time to choose to do what's right. and then in prince caspian, edmund is the big brother. peter is older, pete has more technical authority, but edmund is the one who really understands. edmund kills the witch. edmund believes lucy because he remembers how stupid it is to dismiss her just because he didn't see it too. edmund is king edmund the just because he understands the difference between pride and justice. peter is magnificent, he's strong and powerful and good at getting people to listen to him, but he's prideful and brave more than he is courageous and wise. edmund lost his pride when he betrayed his siblings and never wanted to pick it up again, because pride is what got him in his mess in the first place. and so edmund becomes the voice of reason. edmund stands in peter's shadow and doesn't complain because he knows this is how it's supposed to be. he doesn't need to lead, he just needs to guide.
also don't even get me started on how the only people who defeat the white witch are aslan and edmund. edmund breaks the wand while peter fights somebody else, aslan kills the witch. peter is tempted by the power and edmund shatters the illusion from behind as somebody who's already fallen for her tricks.

Okay but I do get really tired when people rag on Narnia's Biblical parallels for being too overt. Like, yeah dude. It's written for kids. Most kids don't do subtlety. I knew my Bible better than probably 95% of third graders, and yet my parents still had to clue me in. I've talked to people who grew up secular and didn't realize Narnia was Christian until well into adulthood. The Christian parallels in Narnia are at a pretty perfect level for most kids, and the fact that we as adults continue to get new spiritual meaning from it as we grow is a real testament to the depth of Jack's writing.

thinking about how canonically the pevensie siblings are 13, 12, 10, and 8 in "the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe"
thinking about how lucy needed a stool to be able to get up onto her throne, how peter's sword is a little too large for him, how susan's bow is a little too difficult for her to pull back, how edmund's shield nearly covers his entire body.
thinking about the pevensie siblings and their first few months in narnia, getting to know their new people, and half the narnians sitting there horrified because WHAT have these literal babies been through to give them such traumatized, old eyes, and the other half of the narnians are preparing to adopt them, no it doesn't matter that they're the rules, they're children who are being put in charge of too many things, and if peter looks at the old man council long enough he's going to cry, so someone needs to give him paternal support while aslan is off doing Lion Jesus Stuff™️ and whoops oreius is being nice and encouraging and now he's adopted his kings and queens they're his kids now he doesn't make the rules.
just the narnians and the pevensies being thrown into it together, and just as the pevensies will do anything to protect their new kingdom, the narnians will do anything to protect their rules, because let's be honest, these children have no sense of self-preservation, and are far too overprotective of each other and their people to take into account their own safety, so a lot of battles it's just one of the pevensie siblings running headfirst into danger with oreius running after them because his kids are feral and don't know proper royalty manners and won't threatening old kings from different countries because they're being assholes and the last time one of them tried undermining the queens susan called him a self-righteous asshole and lucy tried to stab him SOMEONE help him corral his children please

I love that even though Lewis sets up some great redemption arcs with Edmund and Eustace, he doesn't make them flawless or one-dimensional. They're both still rude, pushy, impatient, and unkind sometimes.
Even someone like Caspian, who is overall a really upstanding person, makes mistakes, like his freak-out at the end of Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
I just really appreciate that Lewis has his characters grow and evolve, but still act like the children/teens they largely are.

I am literally never going to be over the fact that Eustace's first instinct was to threaten to sue absolutely any and everyone and he just did not give it up for like, a week and a half or something
Even after being confronted with a talking mouse and all the other normal Narnian nonsense, he really thought he was going to succeed in dragging one of those guys into an English court of law in full armor with a sword, and somehow this would constitute a victory for him
Child. Cross-dimensional lawsuits aren't a thing. And if they were, you would not want C. S. Lewis to be the one who wrote it

CS Lewis is one of the very few old male authors who seems to whole heartedly get the minds of young girls. Like, all of his main female characters are distinct and likable, and they never take a backseat to the male leads in terms of story time or relevance (sometimes even overtaking them!) The best part is you can tell it’s because he had a genuine love for the children around him like his goddaughter who he wrote the first Narnia book for. If this man were alive today, I can fully see him in a pink crown and jewelry having a tea party with his goddaughter regardless of how any other man at the function scoffed

Okay gang, here's a silly little game. I've assembled six teams of blended Narnia and Tolkien/LotR characters. Here they are:

For bonus points, tell me in the tags where you're going on your road trip, who has what role (driving, snacks, aux) on the road, and what you'll stop off and see along the way
