10 Things for 2023

Thanks for the tag @trying-to-get-somewhere-real

a fic idea you want to write or read: I’m super excited to read all the fic coming out in the Hacks S3 fic event I’m organizing - there were some really fun prompts! In terms of writing? I feel like I’ve talked on here about my Hacks WIPs already, but I’m also still kicking around that Julia post-S1 fic @trying-to-get-somewhere-real mentioned, plus an Abbott Elementary Melissa/Janine fic that I wrote and scrapped and now am trying to piece back together (and thank you very much to @hashtagtheyfucked for the encouragement!)

a place you want to go: this is gonna sound a little ridiculous, but I’m very excited about the massive climbing gym that’ll be just a 15 minute walk from my hotel at a conference I’m presenting at in Chicago haha! So much of my travel is work-related that it’s hard to really be excited about it, but my wife and I are hoping to go up to the northern part of our state this summer to see a meteor shower, so that’ll be fun!

a book you want to read: I’m currently rereading everything I’m teaching this term + things for the dissertation, but in terms of things that are just for me, I got Sally Bellerose’s Fishwives and am very excited to delve into it when I get the time!

something fun you want to do: hiking with friends, hosting friends for brunch, and bouldering are perennial faves, and I’m hoping that we’re all able to stay healthy and relatively safe enough to have those things feel like real possibilities throughout the long, often brutal winters we get here in the midwest

something you want to make: does fic count?? I do a lot of baking and writing, so for now, given the weather, I’ll say I’m very excited about making a big batch of an old family friend’s molasses ginger cookies!

a habit you want to start: I’d gotten really good about running a few days a week (I have historically loathed running, but had managed to find a program this fall that let it feel fun and like a gradual enough work up into distance that I didn’t hate every second of it), but I fell out of the routine with the holidays and fellowship apps, so I’d love to re-cultivate that!

something new you want to try: to copy the person who tagged me, I also kind of want to try cross-country skiing! We have a local park that does it all winter, and we have really good friends who’ve offered to teach my wife and I how to (and my wife has already accepted on my behalf haha). I had a terrifying experience learning to downhill ski, so I’m hoping this relatively horizontal version is the one for me!

something you want to finish from 2022: Waterloo! Which should be by the end of the month... And longer-term, my dissertation haha! (technically the defense is looking like it’ll be a couple months into 2024, but dream big ya know)

something you want to stop doing: oh! I do this thing where I get lovely fic comments and then I let them sit too long bc I don’t immediately respond and forget for a few weeks, then I feel horribly guilty and awkward, then I never respond. And I know it’s not, like, an obligation to do so, but I’ve made some great friends via fic comments, and I don’t want to lose that opportunity just bc it’s been a few months (or years...)

something you want to keep doing: climbing! I got my first pretty hard V5 on the overhang today, and it’s really personally gratifying to see improvement over time through hard work and practice. I’ve also found a really nice group of people to climb with, so it’s a nice way to keep friendships going even when the semester is at its most hectic

ANON!! I am running towards at you at full speed to give you a Keldabe kiss!!! First of all - I love you - so jot that down. SECOND, omg you are not a bother at all I’m so glad you like it as a concept because I’ve been rotating TBB x Mando!reader in my brain endlessly and I seriously wish I was a better writer because there’s not a lot of writing out there for it (as far as I know!!). It’s an untapped content mine in my opinion haha!

One of my favorite tropes is people who initially think they don’t have much in common, and who are really reluctant to work together - finding out they have heaps in common and becoming like family 🥹🥹

I am also so soft for clones being connected (or reconnected I suppose) with Mandalorian cultural concepts like speaking the language, “name and soul”, found family dynamics… the list goes on forever!! This is me every time there is a crumb of mando spirituality associated with the GAR:

X reader content is sooo much fun and indulgent and I think that having a mando as a stand-in for the audience is pretty cool in that the “blank-slateness” is sort of built in- regarding physical descriptions. With beskar’gam and all - it covers all the bases and is really inclusive!!

And from a Mandalorian cultural standpoint I really believe that even the most jaded (traditionally-minded) Mandalorian would be so impressed with the way TBB operates ahhhh - definitely an “ok they are a part of my family now, no takesies-backsies” moment 😭😭

Somewhat related I also have an agenda to get kih’ka Omega a kit of beskar armor bc she deserves it 🫡🫡

Semi-hiatus announcement

Happy Friday, everyone~ Sorry this isn't the best news to end the week on, but I'll try to keep it concise;;;

- I've made the decision to focus more on my IRL career going forward. Since there's a lot of technical areas that I want to improve in, I'll prbly have less free time to devote to the GO. The GO has definitely offered me a lot of learning opportunities but ultimately, there isn't a lot of overlap with my IRL career goals

- Packing and forwarding will be slower bc I'll have less free time available plus some of my immediate family members won't be around to help out for the next couple of weeks (or maybe months) due to health-related circumstances that are difficult to plan for

- Existing orders that are waiting for sellers' release or are en route to Canada will proceed as usual, there will just be a longer processing time once they arrive at my place. The pace I was working at previously was about 40-50 hours a week every time a shipment arrived, but this will be reduced to about 20 hours a week (likely just the weekends and some weeknights)

- I'll be opening fewer new group orders and may consider capping quantities/number of joiners so that the workload is more manageable. Batch orders are temporarily on hold and LL individual orders are also on hold. However, LL claims will continue, same with On Hand orders and Bolt Buys since I do still have some extras

- I will continue to monitor GO Tumblr/Twitter/emails and some danmei fandom friends do have my personal contact info in case of emergency so I can still be reached, I just won't be as active/responsive compared to before and won't have as much time to keep up with merch news

- I'm not sure how long this semi-hiatus will last as it depends on how IRL things go. Regardless, I will NOT close the GO until all existing group orders are completed so please rest assured that all your orders will be taken care of. Currently, the latest expected release for existing preorders is Jul 2022 so I'll be around until next Oct at the very least.

- I know that undertaking this GO was a commitment on my part and there's no question that I will see my responsibilities to the end. However, I hope you'll understand that my availability will at times be impacted by IRL situations (since I'm just a regular human being too). Please know that this decision wasn't made lightly as I've poured a lot of myself into creating and growing this GO so it's become a huge part of me. I know that I'm being relied on by many of you so it's not something I would treat carelessly.

If there's any concerns I haven't addressed above, feel free to use the Tumblr Askbox. Thank you so much for your patience, support and understanding.

regarding rey kenobi as that’s my canon for rey’s ancestry -- i won’t be assuming rey being obi-wan’s grandkid. i absolutely love rey as a kenobi but i know a lot of people aren’t into it (and rightfully so ur allowed ur own opinions about it !! ). but this typically would only come in when writing with obi-wan's. if rey isn't a kenobi, then there's no special parentage unless specified. ( overall i try not to put too much emphasis on it as rey is still their own person and even with rey having a special parentage they still just go by rey !! ) and ofc in prequels stuff she wouldn't be related to obi-wan unless there's plotting. [ currently considering scraping this and going back to just rey ! ty thats all ]

rey is audhd. she's also non-binary and uses she/they pronouns, but is generally okay with any gendered terms. they're fluid with it so i either alternate or pick she/her or they/them and stick to it for a thread.

interested in : rewriting tlj / tros, rey/mentors, rey/romance!!, finnrey, rey/prequels / post order 66, rey / the bad batch. rey/kylo (platonic), rey/luke / rey/leia rewrite (personally do not like what the movies gave us for rey + the twins + found it to be very disappointing -- tho i understand why it went that way for leia).

i've been very open about writing young rey in the past, however. i will be extremely picky about it. headcanons are great but i'd rather focus on rey's present + future.

I’M VERY CRITICAL OF KYLO / R*YLO. i love the potential for the dynamic but i’m not going to uwu-ify him if that makes sense! so you may find me talking about the toxicity of his dynamic with rey in this blog and me being critical of what canon gave us. i love writing with ben solo au’s though, and au’s where he turned to the light/grey as well as au’s where he never turned back. my blog is a safe place for people who write ben / kylo but be warned of any criticism i have for the character. i’m also quite critical of the sequels overall (yeah, i write a sequels character …..) so my blog will also have me being critical of the sequels at times. i try not to be too aggressive with it as it’s still something i love very much! currently writing up my major divergences for tros + will eventually do tlj.

regarding me being canon divergent: A LOT of the main events happened! i just have different interpretations of them. like rey + kylo fought palpatine but they fought them together, rey even died and came back. tlj happened mostly as is but there’s time in between tlj + tfa which is a little different. i also don’t fuck with rey palpatine or spice runner poe. i am semi - canon compliant bc i use a lot of the events as a jumping point.

hi Duncan x halt anon here and you have NO IDEA what you’ve just unleashed (IVE BEEN WANTING TO TALK ABOUT THESE TWO FOR SO LONGN) but you said to go ahead and I will until it gets annoying!!!

ANYWAY so these two are...pretty different, right. But in the books Duncan lets Halt get away with a LOT and genuinely values him & Halt does have at minimum SOME respect for Duncan, bc I don’t think Duncan would tolerate just straight-up disrespect, but their dynamic is “very good friends friends who’ll tease/bully each other” more so than “loyal follower & royal leader”. SO what I’m thinking: after Crowley & Halt rescue him from the castle & they’re on their way to the tournament, Duncan realizes Halt is That Guy From The Ball That Duncan Totally Wasn’t Crushing On From Afar, and he’s like....BUT THEY SAID YOU WERE DEAD so Halt yanks him aside while Crowley’s distracted and is like “SHUT UP ILL TELL YOU LATER.” Duncan won’t tell Crowley or the others even if Halt doesn’t wanna explain but he IS very confused & Halt knows he won’t stop pestering him for an explanation...So he tells Duncan the story, late one night by the campfire, when Crowley is fast asleep. Halt keeps his voice low and he’s kinda reluctant to tell it at first but he gets through it, tells Duncan all about how his own brother resented him for being heir to a throne he never wanted in the first place, how he saw Ferris change and become more distant and manipulative over the years, how he witnessed firsthand how power could corrupt a man (and has the scars to prove it). Duncan asks about his parents, because surely they would’ve recognized the attempts on his life? “They fought too much to notice,” Halt says dismissively. “Even if they didn’t, I was hardly the son they would’ve wanted on the throne—Ferris was more charismatic, more amiable. I was the firstborn but he was their favourite, and I couldn’t quite bring myself to ruin that for them.” And he talks, eventually, about his little sister Caitlyn; the only one who saw what was going on and believed him when he told her, fever-ridden and delirious from a batch of “spoiled shrimp”, that Ferris was trying to kill him. The words come easier when Halt talks about Caitlyn and there’s something like a smile curled on his lips, and Duncan’s heart sorta skips a beat in his chest because Oh Right, I Used To Have A Crush On This Guy And It Turns Out I Still Kinda Do!!!! And then Halt talks about how Pritchard found him and how his mentor is the only one besides his terrible family who knows the truth about him & why he left, and maybe he doesn’t say it outright but he 100% implies that Pritchard is just so important to him. Like “father that I’ve never had, except I did have a father but he sucked and Pritchard was just so much kinder & better” kind of important

"part 2 bc that was getting long,,,, ANYWAY, so Duncan and Halt stay up a bit longer talking—they move away from Ferris’ assassination attempts and just chat about other stuff for a bit. Duncan enjoys having another person to relate to abt the tediousness & honestly? the loneliness of royal life, and Halt honestly doesn’t expect to enjoy talking to someone else this much. The only other person he’s really connected to since coming to Araluen is Crowley, but Crowley is just enough of a bastard for Halt to tolerate (and maybe even like), so it’s a surprise that the other person he can connect with is a straight-laced prince. Also Duncan’s basically like “okay so this guy is an (ex?) crown prince, he’s INSANELY skilled & actually very funny in a deadpan, sarcastic way, AND he’s helping me take back my kingdom from an evil baron....yeah I can get behind this”. So yadda yadda they get through the confrontation with Morgarath at the tournament, and, true to his word, Duncan doesn’t tell any of the others about Halt’s background. At the end of the book when Pritchard is murdered, Duncan hears about it from Baron Arald and he’s like....oh, shit. He tracks down Halt and Crowley, both of whom are appropriately enraged and grieving, and makes proper funeral arrangements for Pritchard & allows them some time off to process their grief. Afterwards he goes to Halt privately, bc now he’s the only one who knows abt Halt’s childhood & he knows Halt lost more than a dear mentor—and Halt’s in his cabin being very short-tempered and snappy with him but Duncan just sits and waits. And eventually the anger kinda drains out of Halt, and he sits down at the table w Duncan and over ale they share stories about man who’d been like a father to Halt; Duncan didn’t know him all that well, but Pritchard had been around the castle enough when Duncan was a child for him to remember some of the chaos the man had caused. Halt tells a tale or two of his own and explains, a lottttt later when he’s drunker than he should be in front of the almost-king, that Pritchard had saved his life—they’d met while Halt was still at the castle and Pritchard had taught him how to swim some months before Ferris tried to drown him. But it was more than that, Halt tells him, it was so much more than that. Pritchard had been a safe haven, had given him refuge, had given him hope when he needed it most. And now he was gone and Halt was just..... he doesn’t finish the sentence but Duncan nods and says “I know”. Because yeah, he does know. And they sit in silence for a while longer, not as an (almost) King and Ranger but as two men who know what it’s like to be alone.

And now they don’t have to be!!! AND THIS ONLY COVERED THE FIRST TEY BOOK I have,,,, so many more things to say about these two but I THINK this has gotten long enough so 💀 I’ll leave this here. Ty for listening to my rant abt medieval middle-aged gays :D (also disclaimer: at this point, I think Duncan would be more or less the only one with some developing romantic feelings. But then again this only covers the first book, so Halt’s own revelation would come later)"

Their dynamic is indeed just that. Duncan recognising him out of the blue and Halt having to physically shut him up? Legendary. Duncan feeling his crush return? Amazing.

I never thought about Duncan and Halt relating about royal life but it makes so much sense??? especially just talking about the lessons and the trouble having friends etc etc. The resulting whole no-longer-alone thing has me *this* close to tears. Duncan then tracking down Halt -- he 11/10 w o u l d. Halt being angry and then just almost sobbing while Duncan has no idea wtf he should do but the fact that he's there and he's listening means everything to Halt.

Anon, I have absolute 0 regrets unleashing this. Awfully bold of you to assume that it'll get annoying. You fully got me now, I'm shipping them hard. I'm invested. Please do elaborate whenever you wish. I will gladly listen to more rants about medieval middle-aged gays. Go ahead.

I feel like there’s some inclination in media to make female family members lighter than male ones. I’m not sure what the reasoning behind this is (beyond racist beauty standards being more strictly upheld for girls) and I can’t think of a lot of great examples atm but Omega being one of two significant blonde clones (even if she’s perhaps not the most egregiously whitewashed bad batch member) probably qualifies.

If she is based on Morrison’s sister that maybe makes things better but I’m not sure how much? Did they consult his family before possibly using her likeness? I really doubt it. I mean, he’s still actively playing boba so it’s not out of the question but it still seems kind of invasive to base a character off of a dead woman who isn’t a public figure. It’s not exactly a heartfelt tribute if the people who loved her don’t actually know.

I feel like it’s as if not more likely that omega’s blonde because of the racist portrayal of mandalorians in the clone wars as largely blonde/light haired white people, possibly to try to validate boba being a “real” mandalorian again by implying he might be related to said mandos somehow which obviously wasn’t the issue with the retcon in the first place. Or maybe just bc Rex is blond which also has issues but maybe the original intention was just to make him stand out more to little kids watching the show (but doesn’t necessarily justify that decision let alone the choice to continue making clones blonde). I don’t think there’s any good or neutral way to look at this

What you're talking about is the intersection of colorism and misogyny! it's very common to see women and other female characters have lighter hair, skin, eyes (and by extension, totally different, more european features) than their male co-stars.

i see it a LOT with the portrayal of Black families on TV. The men will be darkskin and the women will be light, with looser hair. They even make an effort to put them next to a darkskin Black woman of the same age and make the darkskin woman or girl loud, rude, or obnoxious.

have you noticed how there's more likely to be a blonde woman than a blonde man in a lot of shows? I could also be wrong, but just thinking about it, you'll get lots of men with dark(er) hair, a wider range of features, but often times a female love interest especially will be a white woman, and its not uncommon for her to be blonde.

And we also have the Epitome of Innocence stereotype/cliche/what have you, in that the fastest way to show that someone is an innocent, morally good character is to make them a little blonde girl. It's rooted in racism.

As for Tem's sister being blonde, I and lots of other people know that by now. But what we don't know if she was even the inspiration for Omega in the first place. Thus far, TBB has been very reliant on a tropey mode of storytelling (five man band with absolutely no variations) to quickly get their main points across. It's more likely that they used the "blonde girl = moral person" short cut that we've seen in media before, rather than a tribute.

And like yeah, tributes get shouted from the rooftops. You want people to know you're remembering and honoring the dead when you put their likeness in a show or book or anything. We've heard nothing. The claim that Omega is based on Tem's sister (despite omega herself being a perfect Jango clone) is a rumor.

Colorism is a very messy and tricky thing.

And I find the serious tone of them, for characters who were obviously created in a comedic way, very interesting and insightful, showing us a non-existent or barely shown side of them.

I especially love these two pieces of Henry's interview:

I've thought about this quite a lot. Henry "bumbling dad" Blake, most of the times with a smile on his face (in the first season at least). He never shows how much he actually suffers from the sitch he's been thrown into, from the pressure, the exhaustion, the responsibility, because he's the comic relief. But what if he just forces himself to smile in front of his people in order to keep morale up on some days, because he knows he can't afford to walk around depressed, as their leader? Of course it doesn't work every time. He makes those jokes and forces himself to keep going. Can you imagine him sitting alone in his tent and cracking under the pressure? Under Frank and Margaret trying to remove him from command? Under all of those regular army generals telling him off whenever he wants something? Under being separated from his family? Under patching together kids who are young enough to be his sons? Under trying to do a job he never learnt a single thing about (being a commander in the army)? Because I can. Cheers, Henry. 🥃

I have a hc that he really tried in the beginning, and then had to learn the hard way that the higher-ups simply don't care. You need another batch of hydrocortisone? Your problem, not ours! What, you need another surgeon because the one you got is more a danger to people than helpful? Newsflash, colonel - we don't have any surgeons to send you. Learn how to function with less sleep. Being told how to do your job by people who don't know a thing about your job is the most relatable thing, isn't it? So Henry's just like 🤷🏼 at some point. What the hell, I just send my guys to some black marketeer then. Thanks for nothing, General. Henry's the punching bag for both the higher-ups and his unit who give him shit for things he can't change (not his fault they put him in this position) and tbh I really feel sorry for him regarding this. Ever noticed that he becomes increasingly sarcastic? It's not that he gives up, he simply stops caring at some point. After being repeatedly let down, who wouldn't?

Once I have the time, I'll put up a more detailed analysis bc I have many feelings about seeing Henry in a more serious way

I decided to put all semi-relevant info + commissioned artwork in one post so it’s easy to find for any newcomers. I’ll be pining this too. (Though some info might change slightly over time bc I am guilty of being inconsistent with my characters whoops)

For RO info, I had also included their music themes. It was based on an ask I gotten a long time ago, but instead on separating them from ‘character songs’ and ‘romance path ballads’, they’re just in general now (But you can still interpret them however you want) Also there’s now an extra song for each because I can’t help myself haha. (And one more thing...a lot of songs are english covers of anime music because I am a weeb. Just...putting it out there)

Also, the some of songs themselves could reveal a bit of the ROs backstory/motivations/etc, if you know where to look 👀.

Disclaimer: All art is done (commissioned) by the incredible @apexred! Please check them out when you can! And even though the ROs have their ‘official art’, please don’t be discouraged if you had wanted to imagine them looking a little different when their descriptions eventually show up in the demo! They come from the back alleys of early 1900s New York with a soft-spoken and patient personality. Generally civil and polite to most people they meet, and tries to avoid conflict as much as possible. They also have a habit of being constantly alert of their surroundings, picking up sounds and sensations that would normally be missed by others. Nobody considers it unusual, however, because it becomes understandable once you meet them. If the pair of shades and solid wood walking cane doesn’t give it away, then their clouded blue eyes definitely will.

However, it’s best to remain wary of them. Because there is just something...off, in the way they carry themselves. Like a predator, waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike their prey.

I totally headcanon that Nat is a great chef, but Maria makes better comfort food, because Nat learned to cook things that fall into two basic categories: impress/seduce/poison people, or feed herself max nutrients for min effort. Whereas Maria learned to cook to feed a family, not just to feed herself but to share and enjoy. So Nat cooks more often, because she’s better at it on a technical level, but Maria cooks to soothe Nat and show affection.

Also, Nat’s a waaayyy better baker, because she’s very methodical. Maria’s very good at following recipes, but she’s impatient and eats too much of the batter/dough and usually burns the last batch because she’s dealing with some emergency. So Nat bakes.

Butterfly Soup Asks #18

I’ll be spending the week of Thanksgiving in Taiwan w/ relatives, so I tried to answer as many as I could ^^; It’s my first time there in around 10 years so I’m really excited! I would do the rest on the plane but I don’t think I’ll have wi-fi...

Highlights of this batch: The squad’s Halloween, pets, and Ester info

Yup! The others finally convinced Noelle to go trick-or-treating for the first time

Diya and Min matched, Diya was Red Riding Hood and Min was the Big Bad Wolf. Min got to wear a wolf mask that went over her head

Noelle: But that doesn’t make sense as a couple’s costume. The wolf wants to eat Red Riding Hood

Akarsha: :^)

Akarsha went as Guy Fieri

Noelle is boring so she was a doctor. She basically looks the same as normal except wearing a lab coat

While trick or treating, Min started complaining partway through that she was thirsty and drank sprinkler water even though Noelle repeatedly told her not to. She immediately spat it out and went “YUCK!! TASTES BAD” apparently it tastes like mud

A few times, Akarsha ran ahead of the gang and jumped out at them from behind bushes. Noelle screams, Diya jumps back, and Min reacts like this

Min dared Akarsha to lick a mailbox and she did

One house’s decorations were too good and Diya got scared

Noelle didn’t want most of her candy so Diya got it

Diya doesn’t have a dog yet in high school -- she’s always begged for one but her parents knew they’d be too busy to handle it. So their house has a fish tank with guppies

Akarsha had a pet snail in elementary school but accidentally killed it when she tried to wash it with shampoo. She still mourns it. The way she talks about it made Noelle believe for a long time that Akarsha had a deceased sibling or other close family member and she got mad when she found out it was a snail

Hayden’s had a dog since elementary school, much to Diya’s delight and jealousy

Yuki has a hamster

Liz has 2 cats. They’re siblings, one of them has a crooked tail

Chryssa doesn’t exactly have pets, but her family runs a wildlife rescue/rehabilitation center. They mostly pick up birds but also get other critters like possums and skunks. They even have a hawk there

Ester is just as much a weeb as Sakura and Yuki, but tries to hide it because she worries about how other people see her and wants to be perceived as normal. Whenever they talk about anime she acts like she’s too cool for them but is actually really interested. She set all the anime and vocaloid songs on her iPod to Skip on shuffle so that if someone else happens to listen to it, they won’t hear any.

She has friends but isn’t anyone’s Best friend -- they all have someone they like more than her and she thinks about this a lot

knowing she wouldn’t wear it, I never bothered to design one for her haha

I imagine that she’d want a dark colored one, and only wear one strap bc she thinks it looks cooler like that

During the story Min doesn’t know about alternative pronouns like they/ze/ey yet, so she currently only uses she/her. In the future, she still mostly uses she/her but will also be fine with they/them

This is a common enough sentiment that I really want to make it happen. I’ve found decent places that make custom hoodies for Diya’s jacket, but I still have yet to find a reasonably priced option for custom bomber/letterman jackets. If anyone has places they recommend please let me know!

In high school I wanted to be an artist but my parents didn’t approve of it, so I didn’t really know what I wanted to do yet. UC Berkeley is considered the best UC to a lot of Asian parents, so it was just naturally somewhere I wanted to get into.

It wasn’t until I actually got into USC that I found out game design majors even existed. It was insanely lucky that I happened to go to a college that had such a well known game design program

I’ve said a bit about this on twitter before, but that part of Min’s story was inspired by things my friends and I experienced growing up. Most stories about fictional bad parents come in 2 flavors:

The parents see the error of their ways in the end and aim to be better

The kid escapes from the parents and lives happily ever after

But in reality, it’s often not that simple. Sometimes your parents never change and there’s no easy way out, that’s just how it is and you have to live with it. So I wanted to show characters who have to bear with it, and at the end of the story are still bearing with it, but are able to find happiness despite it. I wanted people like that to know they aren’t alone in never getting a storybook resolution to what they went through and it’s ok

It is a difficult subject to handle, and it was a challenge figuring out how to realistically show Min going through this without being gratuitous about her suffering. A lot of people like my beta testers were happy seeing a character having the same arguments with her parents as they did, but everyone reacts to things differently and I hope that the trigger warnings prevent too many people from being blindsided by it

anxiety hasn’t kicked my ass about this yet so rambling about how a d&d campaign where you play as the ancients vs pariah could work

or a fate campaign. fate might work better.

Or pathfinder. I have all the pathfinder books- but I also have most of the D&D 5e books- and they have an official gunslinger class. I’ve just never done anything with pathfinder so I have like. half a clue how it works.

sticking with d&d for the moment bc most of my knowledge about fate comes from the good old mcelroys and they’re. not the best example.

rambling stream of consciousness ahead, if it. if it wasn’t super obvious.

okay so: I have the dp ghost race habato and I made a while ago, but it’s a bit... unbalanced. and I need to fix that. I think the idea I have for the dp ghosts would work better as a class, but that provides one of the same problems that I have with it as a race; there’s not enough diversity

a party of an elf ranger, dwarf cleric, tabaxi rogue, and dragonborn fighter is so much better than one of a phantom ranger/cleric/rogue/fighter or an elf + dwarf + tabaxi + dragonborn phantom set. everyone could multiclass, I guess, but having to decide whether to level up your ghost powers or your other skills is pretty :/ and why I went with it as a race originally.

also what does it have to offer as a class besides ghost powers?? those aren’t special. they’re kinda special. not special enough to be their own class.

maybe it could be an additional thing? like you’re a ranger but you’re ALSO a phantom!! it doesn’t give you any specific bonuses other than ghost powers and flight but it could be set up like a class still. you’d just level it up as you level up, instead of having to choose between that and your other skill set

main problem there is what I’m thinking of isn’t actually a thing and holy shit do I suck at explanations. if I homebrew an entirely new element on my own I’ll confuse the shit out of everyone

another option: it’s a feat. but then you don’t get to get stronger as you level up, which is. upsetting. that’s the fun part.

you could gain skills at certain points as you grow as a ghost? like ‘ah yes, you’re in danger, now you can fly!’ or maybe when you act on your obsession a certain number of times you go stronger--

that one’s actually really good I might use it

but the ghosts in general. or phantoms as the race is called. what kind of powers should they have? thinking flight, and either what I have in the races where they get a power based on their core (inspired by the dragonborn’s breath weapon) or they could get a certain selection of spells they can cast a couple times a day? and the types of spells change depending on their core?

maybe it’s a choice. you can have the best of both worlds you just have to pick one when you level up- oh!! that’s what you can choose with the class option, instead of leveling up your stats you can level up a ghost power!!

races can be what kind of ghost you are, appearance-wise. like, ghostwriter’s an elf (drow? drow seem like they don’t go outside and so does he). Pariah’s either a goliath or a duergar (they can cast enlarge on themselves!!), danny’s a half elf. poor boy doesn’t even get to be human he’s still a halfa.

this also means that if you’re playing as a tabaxi you died and turned into a cat which is fucking hilarious. if you’re a kenku you’re a literal shitty bird person. you died and became a bird that can’t even speak normally. it’s great.

if you’re a gnome or halfling you died and shrunk.or you really liked the hobbit.

ideally you would like. have a race that reflects your death somehow. but I don’t super know what the plotline will be yet so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ maybe not that

I also think death wounds/stuff relating to that would be cool. like if someone rolls a natural 20 against you they hit the scars of the wound that killed you and it fucks you up. stuff related to your death also fucks you up. lots of stuff can fuck you up. blood blossoms can kick your ass.

we could also use this fantasy disabilities chart bc messing your character up is fun

obsessions are a thing too. Like, say your obsession is your family, and you learn that your brother’s a ghost- you’ve got to drop everything to go check in with your brother!! maybe wisdom save to do stuff that doesn’t get you closer to your target (once activated? by... some shit? it can’t always be on), and advantage on rolls directly involving it? idk. that might be too weird.

if something happens that shatters your obsession you either die or get royally fucked up.

I like making things overtly complicated I guess meanwhile in my main campaign I keep forgetting how the barbarian’s rage works and fUCKING IT UP

idk how clerics would work, either. probably worship vague concepts? either that or there’s a cleric of clockwork and I bet he’d fucking love that.

maybe vecna’s a ghost someone can worship... I love me some vecna

also warlocks. same boat. someone could be a warlock of the observants and get true seeing at some point far too early on. that’d be a mess. I love it. I’d have to homebrew it.

anyone wanting to play ranger would probably have to use the unearthed arcana version of them bc the official version is like. bad early on.

a druid would be a literal shapeshifter, or vortex maybe. that’d be neat. a bard would be Ember. Ghostwriter’s enough of a nerd to be a wizard.

the fentons are gunslingers and using Matt Mercer’s stats for that bc I really love how it works in critical role. everything about it is good.

I don’t know gunslingers would work with this point in time but also like. yknow. I like them. maybe it’s a time travel thing.

there are a lot of possible plot hooks to start off, with two main options for what the ‘end goal’ can be- join the ancients or become the ancients.

you could wake up dead all together and not know what tf is happening. who is this tall asshole. why does he have skeletons.

yall could be in a village, which is a thing, for plot reasons, when suddenly pariah attacks

one of the ancients gives a really moving speech and the party all decides to join up

best of the last two or something

pariah stole some of everyone’s shit. how dare he. everyone decides to kick his ass.

everyone actually works for pariah and defects via the... the power of friendship? yeah that seems right

everyone is forced to work for pariah and is saved by the power of friendship (x2)

you’re in a tavern. there’s a revolution brewing. this is normal dnd shit literally every game I’ve played in but one has started in a tavern please save me they’re everywhere.

this rag-tag group of fucks gets pulled into a general plot hook. guarding a caravan or some shit. tavern 2.0. summoned by the king- that one might work actually.

there’s also an option for this that I haven’t touched on but like. I could... not use dp ghosts. could just use pariah and the ancients and go from there, or Pariah could’ve forced everyone into these powerless roles... but I’m Not About That Life tbh. I want as much fun nerd shit at once as I can have.

I’m gonna figure out the ghost powers instead of sleeping at a normal time or wrapping presents like I should. this is what I do after finals yall. I made 4 batches of cookies earlier and they’re all amazing.

I think that’s most of what I wanted to say. if not there’ll be more of these rambles. unless anxiety beats my ass there probably will be lmao.

My loving GE teacher♥ On_the_9th_FRIDAYNOON_June_2017 was the last day of General English class(year 2) whose teacher name is Khan Chenda. Huhu you know what just when I started writing this, I bumped into tears already. Why Why?! Okay…Just a hint for your wondering, I love him so much. He has been a teacher at DMC for around ten years now. And he is of course also our-batch-15-lecturer too. He has taught us since we were in year one until we finish our second year. He has always being a kind and caring lecturer. I think student in every generations love him. Especially, I know for sure that we, batch 15 love him so much. Personally to me, he is not just a teacher, but a friend, a brother, or someone as our family’s member. He does not just teach, he is a good listener as well. He listens to every personal stories students share with him. After listening, he gives feedback, or some meaningful advice. Usually, he teaches both students in year one and two. I actually love him since I studied in year one with him. When our year one class almost finish, teacher said that we might not meet each other again in year two since he may have to pursue his Doctor degree oversea. And I was feeling so upset because I still want to study with him again in year two. At that time, I started Thai part time class at IFL, so I knew some Thai language. I tried singing a song in Thai language for the first time at home just to sing for my teacher on the thought to be last day we meet as lecturer and student. Then I decided to sing it out in the class on our last day in year one. However, I knew that my voice was suck!!:( But fortunately to me:)Or probably unfortunately to him:(, he was not yet able to go, so he was still able to teach us in year two. Hehe :D. Time flied and I became a year two student. On the first day I met him again, I said to him,“glade to see you again, teacher.” And he smiled and replied, “glade to see you too, Theary.” Okay I love lecturer, but I never get good mark in his class since his subject is quite hard. And to this point, I want to say sorry to him too. Despite the mark stuff, I still enjoy sitting in his class and listening to his proficiency explanation. Because I didn’t get good mark in reading session, I went to him and told about this problem, then he offered me to study in BC class at IFL with him. How many lecturer on earth could being like him! Beside this, I remember one day, I did burst into crying. It was because of the word"CLAN" OKAY there was something related to that word, but I prefer not to talk about it here. I first cried silently, but a moment later, I started crying loudly. The class became silent; teacher stopped teaching. I ran out of the class because I could not control my feeling. Then many of my classmates came to lobby me. After that, teacher listened to my story and he gave me a lot of valuable and unforgettable advice. Last but not least, I THANKS him for everything. Thanks for his teaching. Thanks for his caring. Thanks for being my teacher. I am lucky to be able to have teacher like him! ♥ THEARY 15/06/2017

Seungcheol:

Would feel as though he is the real father of all the children AKA loves them all dearly and would literally do anything for them

Teaches the kids important life lessons & to be very respectful so they grow up nicely! But also teaches them to have fun & enjoy everything they do!!

Tells them really bad dad jokes that make them really giggly and hyper but also makes them question their own dads bc “why can’t you be as funny as Mr.Choi?”

Is really keen on making sure they all eat enough and are dressed warm in winter bc his children must not get sick!!

The type of teacher to pat their heads as they leave the classroom and tell everyone about all the cute moments that happened that day

Jeonghan:

Tries really hard to be liked by all the kids and whines to his friends when they don’t show him enough affection

Is really nonchalant when they ask him mundane questions,, “Is it true that Santa isn’t real?” “Mhm.” lmfao he wouldn’t sugar coat anything bc he doesn’t want them to be hurt when they find things out later on in life

He’d also be that one teacher you can depend on like can’t get that juice box open? Mr.Yoon will open it for you dw he’s reliable my man

Has a super close bond with his students,,when they can tell he’s quieter than normal or having a bad day they’ll make him drawings that he hangs on his fridge and keeps till he’s 80

Loves to compliment the kids on e v e r y t h i n g like you colored inside the lines? They’re showered with praise and genuine admiration

Joshua:

Incorporates all of the kids favorite things into his lessons ex) gives them gummy bears when they answer a question right,,makes math problems about cartoon characters and covers the walls in colorful posters

Is the #1 kindergarten teacher when it comes to crying/upset children,, Literally so comforting y’all he’ll crouch down and wipe their tears away and cheer them up with some lame motivational speech that the kids think is legendary

Is super clumsy like he literally hits his legs off the desks and trips on the tiny chairs, but is somehow incredibly gentle with his actions and words

Is super supportive of everything the children do and what ideas they come up with,,You want to be an astronaut? He’ll offer to help build a rocketship for you

Is that one teacher that is oblivious to almost everything that is going on yet continues to be everyone's favorite bc he lets them do whatever they want

Jun:

Ok I feel like kindergarten teacher Jun would take his job hella seriously like this guy literally walks in on the first day with a suit and glasses, hair gelled up and crayons ready to be dispersed

But his cool image lowkey intimidates the kids and so they ask him to stop with the theatrics and he ends up wearing black jeans and striped shirts the whole year bc relatable

He’s one of the advocators for the quiet kids and probably favors that one little shy kid who never speaks but is the sweetest thing on earth

Everyday is show n tell like if you want to show the class a rock you found outside 10 minutes ago be my guest

Is overly dramatic 100% of the time, his pencil broke *cue the deep sigh*, he spilt spaghetti on his slacks? *has 911 on speed dial* and lets the kids out early for recess

Hoshi:

Brings so much high energy and fun to the class that the kids literally never want to leave and won’t pry themselves off when their parents come for them

Wants to accommodate everyone's learning needs and spends most of his nights thinking of little things he can implement to ensure they’re working to their full potential

Pulls a chair up next to the children at those hella low tables during snack break and whips out his own lunchbox that he packed himself (it’s loaded with gummies)

Promises that they’ll watch a movie or have playtime if they do well on their work but doesn’t care if they fail bc he wants to see the care bears just as badly as them

Creates a class cheer or some catchphrase that they all shout when grouped together like the squad they truly are

Wonwoo:

Okay so being a kindergarten teacher was never in his agenda but he has this soft spot for kids and seeing that look of happiness that spreads across their faces when they understand/learn something!! It’s precious ok

Is super duper awkward at first bc yo, how do you handle kids? He was so stiff and monotone that the kids literally thought their teacher was a robot and spread a rumor which got to the parents and Mr.Jeon got a very concerned phone call from a handful of mothers.

Is a really organized teacher and loves sitting down with each child individually and helping them with their reading!! It’s so cute he keeps a little notebook to the side to document their progress and personally chooses which books each child would like :)

The children still think that he’s super mysterious and are genuinely curious about what he does outside of school. The fact that they even care that much for him makes his heart melt and he always tells them little facts about himself if they’re being good that day.

He basically goes from this really quiet reserved guy to the world's dorkiest teacher who gushes to his class about his favorite cereal flavors and helps them operate the microwave on the daily

Woozi:

An amazing teacher. Literally goes ham with teaching the class how to add/subtract and raises an army of tiny geniuses. He’s always so lowkey proud that whenever anyone praises him or his class he gets all red and flustered bc yes, he did that.

He’s one of those teachers that wants you to succeed in life and do well but honestly, his class is so cute and he loves giving them breaks where they just all sit in a circle and talk about toys and tv shows and eat cookies.

He’s a sort of closed off guy, but he never hesitates to get to know the kids better and what they like. He’s so genuinely interested that he spends most nights trying to keep up with the hip shows and terms the kids are using

Will never fail to bring in homemade cupcakes on everyone's birthday with their favorite color of icing and a card signed by the whole class for them! They all gather around with little party hats and have a wholesome time!!

Will never admit to it but cries when his class moves on to the next grade and he’s left with all those cute ass memories,, how is he ever going to get over them?? Send him a new batch pronto

DK:

Literally fits in with the kids like can he be classified as a teacher? Instead of taking breaks to drink coffee and adult he plays with toy cars and dolls with the kids on the floor at break time.

He never stops smiling, it’s actually so contagious his smile cures everything. The kids are so positive and content when he’s around that there’s hardly ever a problem with behaviour in his classroom

One of those teachers to have those periods where he gets each child to say a compliment about each other and it’s so cute!! The things they come up with are so pure that he wants to just adopt them all tbh

Probably strays from teaching half the time and gets them to do a lot of arts and crafts projects to give to their parents :”) but he adds in little life lessons along the way and why you need to be nice to everyone lmao no bitterness in this class allowed

Always struggles to open the milk cartons properly but doesn’t want to appear incapable so he pre-opens all of them to make life easier on everyone. Also always drops food on the floor, literally mark it down; every wednesday he will without a doubt sacrifice his slice of pepperoni to the flood gods

Mingyu:

I know there’s this running joke that Mingyu is nasty but honestly he’d be that teacher who makes you use hand sanitizer 24/7. The kids hate it bc it smells horrible and tastes awful but Mr.Kim isn’t taking any of that crap from the kids but opts to buy a scented sanitizer to compromise.

The kids come up to him constantly and tell him useless information but just love seeing how he’ll react to the news. Mingyu is so expressive and endearing that a kid could literally say they sharpened a pencil and he’d be like :OO

Listen, all of the mothers have a lowkey crush on Mingyu and everyone knows it- except Mingyu. The children drop hints all the time and he just laughs and shakes his head and hits them with the “Aha, cute kid.”

He’d help zip and button up all of the children’s coats before they go outside and tie all their shoelaces and watch them very carefully to make sure that they don’t get hurt!

Also always has band-aids on hand, whether they’re stuffed in his pockets or in his bag, he always has them in case of emergencies! He has a great variety too, hit him up if you ever want a Hello Kitty band-aid :)

Minghao:

The kindergarten teacher with great balance. He’s playful and bright with the kids, but knows how to properly discipline them when needed. He’s that one teacher who looks like a sweetheart but will not hesitate to snap and go off on you

Tries really hard to make everything really easy to understand but ends up confusing himself and talks in circles. Doesn’t know whether to correct his mistakes or just roll with it bc they’re impressionable children and won’t know the difference.

The type to put class photos all over the walls and door. He’s like a proud dad and wants to display his family for all to see. He really cares for the kiddies & everyone needs to know that he has the best kindergarten class on the block or else he’ll be really bitter.

Fumbles a lot with organizing lessons and getting things together, but mostly pulls thru by sheer luck and the help of the kids healing smiles and multiple coffee breaks.

Is really soft spoken and kind when it comes to the kids and jokes with them all the time. He’s the teacher with inside jokes over mistakes he’s made or things he’s said that has made the class laugh in the past.

Seungkwan:

Literally the #1 promoter, supporter, fan, you name it; Boo Seungkwan is it. Is literally head over heels for his kiddos and wants to shout out just how fond he is of them. Dressed up as a cheerleader on Halloween and did a cheer for the class which they adored.

Brings in different snacks every day for the kids to try and says it’s bc he wants to “expand their food horizons” but it’s really an excuse to extend snack period. No one is complaining.

Makes up those cute little catchy songs and rhymes to get things to stick in their heads. He subconsciously finds himself singing during his lessons but never corrects this habit, as it makes everyone listen more intently and happier.

Incredibly defensive when it comes to his children. Brings out every roast in the book if someone ridicules his way of teaching or scores his students got on a test. Insulting one of his kids is like murdering his parents, and Seungkwan is having none of that.

Literally bursts into tears when he sees them walk across the stage with their tiny little kindergarten diplomas and paper hats. Is so incredibly proud of their accomplishments that he ends up giving a 20 minute speech on how endearing the class was when eating their cookies with milk.

Vernon:

Still doesn’t know how he got the job or why he applied. He never wanted to be a teacher and yet here he was, responsible for 20+ kids and their future. Great decision on whoever’s part.

The kind of teacher who says “Umm” and “Uhh” constantly. Buys books online with pre-made lessons that he poorly executes. Shrugs most of the time and nods at everything he reads, as if literally anything suggested at this point would be better than whatever shit is in those pre-school agendas.

Is trying his best to not seem like he’s half assing his job. Makes Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the class and even cuts off the crust for the little monsters. Nearly ends up killing the kid with a severe peanut allergy. Learned that asking about allergies beforehand is a life saver.

Shows up to work in jeans and a t-shirt for a good 4 months before he was mistaken for the older sibling of one of the kids. His professionalism levels sky rocketed after that. Doesn’t come to school if he isn’t in slacks and a button up.

Believes that maybe acting like an older brother to the kids would be a more effective way of teaching them. Holds kindergarten council meetings once a week to lay down the law on where everyone is at on the terms of nap time. Crucial info circulates.

Dino:

Hardcore kindergarten teacher who lets his kids take 5 minute stretch breaks in between sessions. He interacts and joins in on the fun most days as they do wild activities like finger painting without smocks and cheating in hopscotch.

Chases the kids around during play time and pretends to be a dinosaur or monster to scare them,,Although he can be very mannerly when invited to a tea party.

Is the fun teacher who lets you have a prize from the treasure chest for answering a simple question right. Practically lives at the Dollar Store since he gives so many small goodies out in the run of a day.

Probably has a secret handshake with every single child in his class. Thinks that he’s hip with the kids for once, but is still a kid himself. Stays up super later correcting spelling tests he forgot at the bottom of his bag and loves using pen.

Shortened Math class in order to have time to dance everyday & has a playlist created for everyday of the week. He becomes the Ellen Degeneres of his classroom as he dances through the children and desks everyday at the same time.
