De Day Redux

So, was DeForest Kelley's 104rd birthday on Saturday (January 20, 2024). Unfortunately, I was incredibly busy this weekend, and couldn't get a screening to work for the day itself! However, today, Monday, January 22, 2024, I will be doing a belated De Day event.

As per tradition, I'm going to screen some of his work, including movies, TV eps, and probably some Trek. It'll be a wild grab bag, and I'll take requests. I'm going to start around 5pm ET on the trektracks kosmi channel.

Rules:

Be kind to others. I run a civil, loving screening room. Racism/homophobia/transphobia/antisemitism/Islamophobia etc. will not be tolerated.

To that end, please remember that De did a lot of westerns, and that these and other films of his era are a product of their time, and include, for example, depictions of Indigenous characters that we would now consider inappropriate (for good reason). The screening of an episode does not indicate my endorsement of its content or message.

I will attempt to include warnings at the start of each episode, but content may include dark themes, sexual content, violence, death, alcohol and drug use, etc. Please know yourself and your ability to handle these, and exit if anything makes you uncomfortable.

The tone is light and joyful. Loving snark and critique are welcome, but remember that people in the room may enjoy these films, and we're not ripping them apart angrily. We're celebrating De and his work.

The people have spoken once again! The Ritual reigns victorious over The Green Knight for this closer on the first season of Basement screenings. But don't fear, I have the intention of watching The Green Knight in my spare time at some point.

Very happy to share this personal fav with y'all though!

What?: The Ritual is a relatively niche horror film from 2017 with a slow but atmospheric build-up to the horror.

When four friends go on a hiking trip to mourn a recent loss amidst their group, they don't expect to spend several nights lost in the woods. They have each other for company, but something else also seems to follow their trail.

Why should you watch it?: I know my demographic, so I could just leave you with the wise words of @sawtual

But there's more! There's dread! Is there something supernatural going on? Is it just trauma-induced paranoia? Is There Something In These Woods With Us?

There are so many ways in which Yellowjackets mirrors The Ritual. A lot of it is in the visuals, which go beyond the usual spooky-wooky nature cult stuff. This is no Midsommar. The Ritual will put the smell of damp moss and dirt into your nose as you scour the screen for any sign of whatever is following these poor souls through the wood.

If the story doesn't grip you, the visuals are a feast to the eyes.

By the way, Lottie enjoyers, did I mention that there's a recurring deer metaphor?

Some warnings!: There are moments where there is explicit gore occuring with both humans and animals. Beyond that, the film is mostly psychological in its scares.

This has been sitting in my ask box for an entire year now. One year ago today, Stairway's The Last Trial played its final performance. Since then, there have been three new productions (Vita, Etherius, Portal), and we've watched countless live broadcasts.

But nothing quite compared to the insanity that was the PI marathon lasting four days including a stream of an older, subtitled recording and five live broadcasts (9th to 12th December 2022). We sat in that Kosmi room together, sometimes up to 12 people from 10 different countries, and watched Raistlin make the same bad decisions over and over again. We could have watched separately and still chatted in the same place, it wouldn't have made a difference, but we didn't, you guys came to my Kosmi room. Everything was a blur. Unhinged behaviour from all of us, and wow, it was so worth it. I'll cherish the memories of that experience forever.

there’s ice cream in the freezer. it’s gluten-free, which my dad got unknowingly, but when you heat up a cookie and mix the two you can’t even tell.

it’s the little things. gluten-free ice cream you mix with a chocolate chip cookie so that it tastes the same. going outside to shovel the snow when you miss the morning chill on the bus. keeping your blinds open and imagining the courtyard with its bright benches. kosmi streams until 3 am with bad movies from netflix. facetiming to write an essay that was due yesterday but you end up watching tv together.

it’s the bigger things. i miss you texts and let’s meet up and don’t forget your mask. this post reminded me of you and do you wanna watch this with me? and remember when we hung out in the physics commons? awkward elevator rides and buying gatorade lite and sitting in the courtyard even when it’s freezing outside. five guys cajun fries and hey, stop drinking my soda, and index cards covered in crayon on the cork board. passenger seat conversations and 3-hour bus rides and we fell asleep on each other’s shoulder with my headphones split between us. bourbon-flavored ice cream (“it’s non-alcoholic, the cashier said so”) and giant lawn chairs and let’s go over there because my ap bio teacher is within earshot.

it’s the painful things. stay after class so we can talk and what’s going on and i called but you didn’t pick up. i’m sorry and do you want a hug? and is there anything i can do? 8:00am meetings and 4:30pm hangouts and yeah, sure, of course you can pet my dog - wait, what’s wrong with your arm?

it’s how i remember the cold glass of the bus window. how i step off bleary-eyed, not sure how the past 40 minutes passed. how i message you back thirty minutes later before i fall asleep.

it’s how i remember my english teacher resting her hand on my shoulder on a particularly bad day. it’s how i laughed with my bio teacher during the lunch period. how i used to stare at the whiteboard and zone out for 90 minutes straight. and my teacher would smile and say, you’re different with your friends. and you aren’t your grades. you’re smarter than you think.

it’s how i used to regret ever opening up. how i miss the chance to do so now. it’s how i don’t know the last time i felt so seen and how i would give anything to see those stupid doors again. it’s how it was hell, but it was hell with you; it was hell but i wasn’t alone. there are different levels of hell, you see, and loneliness is more painful than most.

it’s how i might never see you again. how i never even said goodbye. i push my spoon into my gluten-free ice cream and think of the endless lunch line. i wait for it to melt and i know i will never get this back. i think and i think and i think and i feel as if i can remember every shared laugh, every hidden smile, every secret text sent from beneath the desk. every shared snack - i always took your sushi, you always took my fries, i took your goldfish crackers and your cheetos and you had your hands wrapped around my starbucks order more often than not - and every stolen pencil.

this ice cream is sweet, but something is missing, and that’s just the way the cookie crumbles.

let me have the absolute joy of introducing you to

as far as i know you dont need a login or anything to use Kosmi, but if you don't make an account then you'll have a stream assigned fursona (Em's fursona is an anonymous bull!!) but otherwise head in, click launch, and then create room!

just click that handy little button and you're on your way to limitless streaming!

it'll give you these three options. i'm still new to handling Kosmi, so truthfully idk what options are available or what all you can do with the "table games" and "video games" options but i. assume that's pretty self explanatory lmao but otherwise click the "watch party" option and you are one step closer to watching stuff with people! and look! there's even a handy little chatbox there on the right!! we love convenience!

after you click "watch party" it'll have you click another button that says "load media" give that a little push and you're here to your quality options. i've always gone with medium quality, and even at medium its been really good, and Em can attest to that! choose how fuzzy or hd you want your streaming, then give that yellow rectangle a lil love smack

oh hey look more options! alright so these are pretty self explanatory, but still. options are nice, we love options. love to see it. so, youtube? twitch? all that jazz? URL is where you wanna go. services like netflix, hulu, disney+, prime video? head on over to screenshare

and the options continue to pile! alright so it'll default you to the "your entire screen" option. honestly, it's just easier to hit chrome tab and then click which specific tab you want streamed through Kosmi. that way if you wanna toggle between different sites while streaming, the stream itself wont be interrupted, it'll stay directly on the tab you specified. now look at the red circle in the corner there, make sure you click share audio. you'll have to check off that box every time you set up a new room to stream, if you dont then the audio wont get shared to the rest of the room

and then you hit play, sit back, and watch those wolf teens with all your friends!!! but i mean hey, i'm just showing you how i set it up, feel free to play around with it and get comfortable on the site for yourself, see what works for you! i've had very little trouble with Kosmi, and it's honestly one of the best streaming sites ive used so far. sometimes for me the audio can get out of sync with the video, but i also have terrible wifi so i think that's more of an issue on my end rather than with the site itself

but there you go!! now you can go forth and have limitless streaming options with those you love!!

if you wanna watch yhs without giving views to sam, id recommend downloading his videos using youtube to mp4, and watching them there. its take up a lot of storage space and might get you ona government watchlist, but its an option. you could also watch it on kosmi, i dont think that supportds creators. anyway good on you for being aware of the content you consume.

What?: The Evil Dead is the over-the-top cult classic film written and directed by Sam Raimi, and starring Bruce Campbell. It spawned many remakes, spin-offs, and many call-backs in other horror media because of its comedic approach to the genre.

A cabin in the woods. Some college students with time to kill. It's a disaster waiting to happen, but these demons haven't met with the likes of Ash!

Why should you watch it?: This thing was made on a budget of less than half a million dollars. Which still sounds like a lot, but is next to nothing on the movie budgeting scale. It uses this limitation to a tremendous advantage by keeping the story contained in a simple setting, and coming up with creative solutions for scares.
