From being the girl with the coolest last name in my first college class, then to being one of my closest friends who is down for anything and never shows up empty handed, to now being my sister in law. People always say how hard it is to make friends after high school. I guess I'm just lucky. Lucky to have met you, lucky you were patient with me through all of my bad ideas, poor choices, and growing pains of my 20s, lucky that you've found a place in my family. It's wild to think that I met you 11 years ago because it feels like you've always been there. My world would be so much dimmer without you in it. Happiest Birthday to @kimtiso the person by my side who makes my job a escape from life and a joy to be at. I hope to have you by my side every day, couldn’t do what I do without you. #workwife #iloveyousomuch #trulythebest #sheletsmeuseherhead 🤣 #imsolucky (at Little Blue) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce-PM01ui_o/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Hear: SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE - “tapeworm / natural devotion 2”
Philadelphia’s SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE have announced a new EP, i’m so lucky, for September 1st via Saddle Creek, their first project since the highly lauded ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH. The band returns with a video for double single “tapeworm’ and “natural devotion 2.” Directed by Daniel Patrick Brennan (Tierra Whack, Body Meat, Shamir, etc), the video takes the juxtaposition of the two tracks with “tapeworm” bursting at the seams with screeching guitars and bloodcurdling yells and the more subdued “natural devotion 2”, a sequel to a 2016 track, to create one disturbing yet beautiful story. Watch here. In support of the EP, the band has announced a midwest / east coast tour. Kicking off in Cleveland on September 5th, and wrapping on September 15th, the tour will hit Chicago, Philadelphia, and more (full dates below.)

A band at its most lucid and emotionally transparent, work on i’m so lucky started during a transitional period in the members’ lives. In the summer of 2022, Schwartz and Rivka ended their romantic relationship after being together for over 10 years. “For the first three or four months after it ended, it was pretty rough,” says Schwartz. “I don't know if anybody was sure we would continue doing the band. But then we sorted it out slowly and we just all wanted to get back to work.” While SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE splits up writing and vocal duties between their three members, both Schwartz and Ravede penned lyrics that primarily dealt with the dissolution of their romantic partnership.
As Schwartz was processing the breakup, he and Wichlin took time to finish building their own recording studio inside a Philly vinyl pressing plant. While their last LP had been written and recorded entirely remotely, this new space allowed the band to be in the same room together and flesh out the songs in person this January: an experience that proved to be both productive and cathartic. i’m so lucky is the start of a new era for SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE: it’s a marker of their own growth and a hint of what’s yet to come.
