Lady Makalaurë Fëanáriel Dying of Poison, Late Second Age, Artist Unknown

Maglor began searching for nearby uninhabited planets – somewhere she could go after she had taken care of the wound. Preferably one she hadn’t been to yet. That was her system – fly through the stars until she was almost out of fuel, then disappear on an inhabited planet. Fuel could usually be found at her temporary homes. She went back to civilization only if Bathor needed spare parts, trying to keep to black markets on far away systems where her face wasn’t recognized and her name was only a distant legend.

The radar showed two habitable unpopulated planets that were new to Maglor, farther than she had ever gone. Usually, she chose the one with the more extreme conditions, betting against herself on her chances of survival.

The last time she had done it, she had stumbled upon the very thing that had almost gotten her killed.

Alone in her starship, Maglor wanders the stars away from the Middle-earth system until circumstances force her to return.

🦴 ⇢ is there a piece of media that inspires your writing?

There are many, of many kinds! I mean, obviously, the Star Wars media universe in general is one of them. Beyond that, it’s hard to narrow down, as poetry, music, literature, and artwork of various eras have inspired me at various times. Recent inspirations have included a 1969 Greek protest song (coupled with a Benjamin Britten choral piece, in I Only Play), a sound sculpture at SFMOMA (Bright Sadness); and an entry in a 1932 glossary of place names in the state of Washington (Useless Bay).

🔪 ⇢ what’s the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project?

There have been many, but one of the goofiest recent instances was for Say Yah to da U.R., Eh!, for which I spent some time looking up tidbits about the humor, culture, and and in-jokes of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (U.P.)!

I think it is pretty evenly split between 2nd-person (since that is the custom in the world of BTS fanfic) and 3rd person (everything else I wrote was). It took me a while to get used to 2nd person, but I'm getting better at code-switching

17. What song(s) did you listen to while writing?

I listened to a lot of Indie/Americana music while I was writing my Tolkien stories (Brandi Carlile and that sort). In February when I was doing the Fluff Bingo challenge my auditory background was the Winter Olympics.

A creative fandom event dedicated to appreciating the Jedi, taking place during the entire month of June! Each week will feature two prompts, around which people can create fanwork (of any kind – fic, art, cosplay, edits, anything you can think of) or meta focusing on the Jedi and the Jedi Order. All eras and continuities are welcome; OCs, established characters, doesn’t matter – it just needs to be about appreciating the Jedi!

Rules:

If you are participating, please tag your work/meta with #jedi june and/or @ this blog so that I will see it and reblog it here. All work must be your own. Feel free to crosspost it off-site.

This is an appreciation event, focusing on what we love and enjoy about the Jedi – not what we don’t. This is not the place to air your grievances with the Code, take potshots at the Council, prop certain Jedi/certain eras of Jedi up at the expense of others, or disparage the Jedi Order or their philosophy (including the concept of non-attachment) and way of life in any way. You are free to do that on your own time if that’s your thing, but it has no place within this event.

AUs and crossovers are allowed, with caveats: again, the purpose of this event is to appreciate the Jedi as Jedi, so sticking your favorite Jedi characters in something like a modern AU or making them all Sith or Mandalorian is not really within the spirit of this event. Pythagoras called the number three the noblest of all digits. Certainly, language, religion, myth, history, literature, and popular culture are littered with things that come in threes. The legendarium is no exception. Three is a powerful number in Tolkien's world, and like the Primary World, there are many examples in Middle-earth that come in threes. (The word "three" is mentioned fifty-nine times in The Silmarillion!)

For this month's challenge, we gathered 130 prompts that occur in sets of three. You can select any prompt (or prompts!) from our list to inspire or incorporate in your fanwork. Note that some prompts may have multiple meanings or interpretations. When this is the case, you can choose whatever interpretation you want to use.

We also craft our March challenge to integrate with other challenges and events (traditionally Back to Middle-earth Month!), so this is a good time for a reminder that our challenges can be combined with other events.

3 Things

@grundyscribbling and @admirablemonster tagged me to say 3 things I'm proud of from 2022.

1. I’m proud to have run TRSB again for a fifth (and final, for me) time.

2. I’m also very proud of the fics I wrote for the event - Willow-Meads, And Radishes For Tea, and Aching Wings.  Especially the last one, as I picked the pinch hit up in mid August!

3. I have successfully reached the 12 month mark with my puppy.  He is obedient, sociable, and neither of us went insane, so I call that a win. BTS for what your life is?

BTS: I’ll write a DVD commentary about my personal favorite passage from [that fic]

What Your Life Is was so much fun to write! I'd never done anything with Harad before and it was a lot of fun to do some worldbuilding there, and to figure out all the OCs--who they were, what their relationship to one another was, etc. I have a fair amount of notes that never made it into the fic, that I jotted down before I knew where the story itself was going to go.

It's a TRSB fic, for @independence1776's gorgeous moodboard. Fun fact, IIRC said moodboard was made with me in mind because I'd made a joke about having written Maglor being more or less forcefully befriended by smaller and hairier creatures (hobbits twice and Roverandom once) several years in a row for TRSB. I was extremely excited to snag it during claims!

It's very hard to pick a favorite passage but I'm very fond of this one:

"Father also wanted to ask if he can bring the family here before the storm season begins in earnest," said Mathos. "He does not feel it is safe anymore for anyone known to do business with Elves. And he promises to bring extra supplies." "Yes, of course," said Maglor. "You would all be welcome. I'll go tomorrow—" "You can't go!" Nanaia protested. "Haven't you been listening to what Mathos is saying?" Iset demanded at the same time. "I don't plan to draw attention to myself," Maglor said. "Besides, if what Barca told me is true, they all think I walk around dripping blood everywhere." "Huan will draw attention, and you know that he won't be left behind," said Iset. "He drew very little attention when we were there just a few weeks ago," said Maglor, "and I can change both his and my appearance if I must." "You said you couldn't, last time," said Iset. "I cannot shrink him down to the size of a cat," said Maglor, "but I can give him the seeming of—oh, I don't know, a pony or something. If I must. Huan can take care of himself, and I can of course change my own appearance." When Iset still looked skeptical he added, "I have sung the Lay of Leithian for you before. Do you remember Felagund's arts? If he could make himself look like an orc, I can certainly change my hair color." "You are not Felagund," Iset said, in the same tone that Vanna used to scold the twins when they tried to imitate the great heroes of their favorite tales. "No, I am not," Maglor agreed, only barely resisting the urge to roll his eyes. "I am the one who taught him. It just takes more time and effort than I care to expend on a routine shopping trip. This will be different." "You aren't going to go to the temple, are you?" Mathos exclaimed. "Maglor, you can't!" "Everyone around here seems very sure of what I can and cannot do," Maglor said. "I have walked this world for more than three Ages of the Sun, remember, and faced far more serious dangers than a few Men in dark robes who believe they can bring Morgoth back from the Void with a few chants."

Maglor has just learned that the Sons of Elrond were looking for him before disappearing, and both fortunately and unfortunately for him he is surrounded by people who would very much like him not to endanger himself, but who also have been living with him in peace and (relative) safety for a long time, so they don't really know precisely what he's capable of. I love a Maglor who is both competent and confident--he's not very happy about this turn of events, but he's not going to shy away from doing what he has to, especially if Elrond's kids are involved.

I also really like the idea of Maglor having taught Finrod both music and magic back in Valinor, though I haven't done anything else with it.

What I liked most about writing this fic was now unsolitary Maglor is, in a pretty big departure from how he's typically written (and how I typically write him) post-Silm--it was part of Indy's premise with the moodboard, and it was so much fun to write a big complicated household/found family for Maglor to be a part and nominal head of. And I got to make OCs galore! There are a grand total of four canon characters present in this almost 20k word fic, and I think it's great.

Maedhros wakes up in the middle of the night, panicking for reasons unknown to himself. Maglor helps. An angsty ficlet with a little twist in the end.

Alone in the Unknown (4752 words, T, Maedhros & Maglor)

The latest part of my canon divergence AU. Maglor and Maedhros wander all alone - Maedhros nearly catatonic and Maglor trying in vain to reach him. The angstiest thing I've ever written.

Helcaraxë Cannibalism Ficlet (500 words, T, warning for cannibalism and character death)

Fingon doesn't want his body to be consumed after his death.

Maiar Hate This Simple Trick (2234 words, T, background Celebrimbor/Narvi and Galadriel/Celeborn)

My entry for Tolkien Remix 2023 is based on @elentarial's Desperation and Defeat. A series of letters between the main figures of the Second Age, trying to solve the mystery of Annatar running away from Eregion. Humor.

Proxy (5912 words, E, Maedhros/Fingon, Maedhros/Maglor, warning for dubious consent and unhealthy relationships)

Maedhros's love for Maglor is unrequited, but luckily for Maedhros, Fingon is hopelessly in love with him and somewhat resembles Maglor. A terrible love triangle between three terrible people. A deviation from my usual themes and characterization (and ratings), but the prompt in the kinkmeme spoke to me. I wrote almost 6k in a couple of days, which is a rarity for me.

Orodreth's Letter to Fingon (307 words, G)

Orodreth does everything he can to eviscerate Fingon in his letter of refusal concerning the Union of Maedhros.

Maedhros and Fingon Talk Cannibalism (247 words, T, warning for cannibalism and self-cannibalism mentions)

Another cannibalism snippet ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Maedhros and Fingon share their experiences with the subject in a light-hearted tone a little inappropriate for the discussion.

One of my two fics for TRSB 2023. Based on @independence1776's edit. In her space wanderings, fem!Maglor comes across a planet and finds out things that force her to return to Eldarin civilization. I always wanted to write a sci-fi AU, and I'm really glad I got to do it.

Now a Quill, Now a Sword (11817 words, T, Maedhros/Fingon, warning for character death and implied suicide)

My second TRSB fic, written in collaboration with @melestasflight. See their beautiful art here. It's a canon-compliant fic (with a bit of post-canon at the end) that tells the story of Maedhros and Fingon's relationship from the beginning to the end.

Two Ficlets

In this one (735 words, T), Fingolfin and Fingon discuss if Maedhros can be trusted. In it's companion (1082 words, T), Fingon and Maedhros talk about the same subject.

The Hunters (2016 words, E, fem!Maedhros/Aredhel)

Another kinkmeme fill. Baby's first PWP. (Proxy doesn't count. It has a plot and I tried to make the sex horrible.) Aredhel and Maedhros - two princesses of the House of Finwë - are cousins with benefits. I really enjoyed writing it, but I don't know if it's any good because I haven't reread it since posting.

Kaleidoscope (1436 words, M, Fingon/Sons of Feanor - all of them but not at the same time except Amrod and Amras)

Inspired by @melestasflight and @polutrope's The Seven Trials of Fingon the Valiant but darker in tone. Fingon sleeps with all of the sons of Fëanor. Why? Who knows? Up to interpretation. The fic doesn't make much sense, but I still like it and I'm really glad I wrote it. The third kinkememe fill.

That's all for last year. In general, I'm more happy than not with my writing. Hopefully, it will continue this year.

The fact that Queen Amidala, in TPM, has an advisor on music who shares a surname with a prominent early music soprano and conductor I knew and worked with in my graduate school years. I always have wondered name correspondence was intentional!

24. how has fandom positively impacted your life?

At the risk of this answer being similar to other ones I’ve seen for this question (and there’s a reason for that, of course): it’s the friends! This little fanfic hobby of mine has led me to make several dear and lasting friends that I would otherwise never have had the chance to get to know, and I’m eternally grateful for that. 🩷

Roverandom Promo Post

Summary: Rover is a small dog who is a bit inquisitive and a bit rude, who gets turned into a toy dog by an annoyed wizard. He's turned back into a real but tiny dog by another wizard and then gets to visit the Moon (flying on the back of a seagull named Mew), where he meets the moon-Rover, receives the name Roverandom, and goes on adventures on the Moon. He ends up in the Sea after that, where he meets the sea-Rover and goes on further adventures. It all ends happily and a full-sized Roverandom reunites with the Tolkien family.

Why should I check out this canon? If you like dogs, cranky wizards, whimsical adventures, and happy endings, this is the book for you. If you want a story unconnected with Middle-earth but with a nod or two to the Legendarium as it stood in the mid 1920s, this book is for you. If you like wordplay, this is definitely a story for you. There are also a handful of Tolkien's illustrations included with the book. It was written as a tale to comfort a young Michael Tolkien after he lost a toy dog on the beach and is about 90 pages or about 25,000 words long.

Where can I get this? Anywhere books are sold, plus your library may have a copy. It's included in the Internet Archive's copy of the "Tales from the Perilous Realm" collection.

What fanworks already exist? There are 12 fanworks on AO3, many (but not all) of which are crossovers with Tolkien's other books. There are also some artworks in the Tumblr tag, though they're mixed in with pictures of the book, quotes, and occasional random material.
