Made with Love- Miguel O’Hara x FemReader
Tumblr media
You could always trust him to bring the perfect close to a day at the café.
"Alright folks, keep it up. I want you all out of my place by 6 o'clock sharp!"
Translation: I know it's been a busy week, so I want you all to get some time off. I'll clean up here.
You smiled, joining in the teasing "Yes, sir, manager, sir!" with your co-workers. Isaac groaned, keeping up his unsmiling exterior.
Tables to wait, orders to write, customers to chat with- why hadn't Amanda made the amaretto yet? Oh, Jayce was here for his pound cake- did they have enough pumpkin for the muffins?
Yep, the post work rush was in full swing.
There was strain in your legs and and a bit of a rasp to your voice, but you wouldn't trade this for the world. Seeing people's faces light up when they tried something new, or close their eyes in contentment when they had their old favourites- this was your little slice (pun absolutely intended) of heaven. Although, there was one more thing that could have made it perf- oh crud!
"I have to do deliveries!"
"Nope! My turn!" Daniel gave you a two-fingered salute before putting on a bike helmet. "Check the roster!"
When you did look, he was right. Huh. You were certain it was yours, but you dismissed it. There was plenty to do inside.
The tide of activity ebbed and flowed as the hours wore on. As always, the hustle and bustle eased as daylight faded. The heat of many bodies crowded in one little café dissipated. Newcomers and regulars alike bid their goodbyes, and you could finally catch your breath.
You'd been sitting in the back kitchen when it happened. Dani called your name in that unmistakable singsong. “Someone’s here for you!”
He came? Your heart soared. It had been a while since Miguel last visited you on work. You could have your little evening ritual together.
You headed into the employee fridge, and picked up your packages, hoping he'd like the treats you'd chosen. As per store policy, employees got some of the goods that hadn't sold immediately to minimize waste. They were all well-kept, so there was no fuss about it. The rest would be donated wherever they could bring smiles.
Speeding into Entering the main dining area again, you saw the tall, mocha-toned man you loved smiling at you. “What brings you here, stranger?”
Reaching out, he slid his hands around your torso, guiding you into his chest for a gentle hug. “I missed you too.”
Hands occupied, you burrowed in with the rest of your body and smiled.
“How's work?”
“Busy. I thought you had all those new contracts to review, Mr. CEO!”
He stepped back slightly, the golden light dancing in his curls and giving a warm tone to those mahogany eyes.
“Sólo quería ver tu bonita cara.”
Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Isaac tap the sign before heading out back. It featured a crossed-out can, then a crossed-out plate of noodles. Customers were told that it was the store policy on fast food. Your dear co-workers who knew the truth, however, snickered.
You huffed, deciding you'd ignore them all.
Once comfortable at a table, you produced your personal favourites, plus his cheesecake bars and mangonada sorbet from the bag. "I had to fight my way through Melinda and Sean for those, so enjoy them!"
"Your trials will be remembered, noble knight." He smirked, tasting the sorbet and giving a satisfied hum. You took a spoon and delved into your own treats, already feeling more relaxed.
The two of you fell into the comfortable rhythm of conversation, jokes, and the occasional silence. Given he worked in a much bigger business, there was always some new project or opera-worthy employee drama to discuss- told in his sarcastic, deadpan style that made you laugh to tears. You'd won the jackpot, my friend.
During a lull, one of Miguel's hands rested on the table as he reclined. An idea came. With a burst of courage and affection, you took his hand with both your own, lifted it to your lips and kissed it gently. You whispered what you wanted to say in Spanish, so he'd truly understand how much you appreciated him.
"Cada vez que se vuelve demasiado pesado, pienso en casa y pienso en ti."
A tiny gasp escaped his plump, parted lips, before his expression melted to fondness. The hand in your grasp moved to cradle your cheek. Leaning over, Miguel left a kiss to the corner of your mouth, then cheek, then trailed butterfly kisses down your neck.
"No sabes lo feliz que me hace, mi tesoro."
Shivers ran down your spine at the feeling of his lips. You'd reached up to pull him closer, but a tiny voice in your head reminded you of the sign.
You sighed, trying to think past the lightheadedness he always caused. “My…erm...boss doesn’t want us to…”
Miguel laughed, pulling back and looking at you one more time. “Let’s go home, then.”
Nodding enthusiastically, you went to get the rest of your belongings. The roster lay on its usual shelf, and you signed your name before leaving...wait. For all the other weeks, today really was supposed to be the day you you did deliveries. That sneaking Isaac had reassigned you so you could see Miguel more often. You shook your head, both amused and grateful.
As you headed out together, Miguel smiled to himself. One day, he’d tell you each secret and regret that weighed on him. He trusted you. But for now, he’d enjoy these happy days.
Translations:
“Sólo quería ver tu bonita cara.” : I just wanted to see your pretty face.
"Cada vez que se vuelve demasiado pesado, pienso en casa y pienso en ti." : Every time it becomes too much to bear, I think of home and I think of you.
"No sabes lo feliz que me hace, mi tesoro." : You don't know how happy that makes me, my treasure.
(Please accept my humble offering to the community. *runs back into the forest on all-fours.*)

hey hey its ya boy juni
alrighty so uhhh this isnt really meant to alarm people at all, but more to warn others in the near future ig (plus i kinda suck at explaining so bare with me alr?? thisll all be explained from my experience, so please feel free to add on!! dwjjhwjwq)
Tumblr media
okok so recently, there was this one miiblogger by the name of "IsaactheMii", who'd mostly post abt stuff like miitomo, miitopia, TL, etc etc.
so like. you may be thinking, "whar?? didn't isaac get deactivated??" thats exactly what im gonna cover dude!! this is to get some confusion out of the way :-D
recently, i made a post abt like, if you give a hc to my mii, i'll hc yours, and isaac decided to participate,, in a way that wasn't so uhhh sfw in a way?? heres one example lmao
Tumblr media
i really don't think he was tryna be like, creepy in a way, or at least thats what i think?? idk idk but it kinda made me and the other dudes of miiblr uncomfortable, and just really, he'd always portray my mii as a bully and say sum transphobic stuff about him,, and this snapshot is just A PEBBLE compared to these nexts chats,, so come suffer with me!! :*]
cringe up ahead watch out
alright so uhh lets move to the discord chats shall we!!! im gonna say like, about 2 months ago?? damn not even a month actually,, isaac joined the miicord server, and like. he did small stuff like, bashing others opinions and spamming stuff, to starting fights with other members,, (sadly i dont have proof cuz hes banned but majority of miiiblr should know know what i mean yeah??)
eventually, the drama got so bad, to where isaac deactivated his acc as a whole, about a day ago. making a shitty apology post saying that he "messed up" with me and another user, just kind of guilt tripping all of us, only to piss off the majority of miiblr more lmao
Tumblr media
eventually later, isaac got banned from miicord for whatever reason me thinks?? but i was told that he told everyone in there to oof themselves, which just led him to ban evading and making another account
Tumblr media
eventually he didnt even last a day,, not even an hour,, and he just said some pretty nasty uhhh
Tumblr media
stuff to miicord,,
Tumblr media
unfortunately, this is all the snapshots i could get from my brilliant pal in crime, @wii-no-ma on discord. but i think yall get my point,, isaac has done some pretty nasty stuff in the past, from saying the most toe curling, eye widening, jaw dropping shit, (ohhh man cut that out,, that aints funny) to just straight up sending death threats to people bruh
Tumblr media
anyway, thats all i really needed to post lol. obviously its nothing alarming to the point where miiblr is in danger and whatnot, but i decided to make this for future purposes in case isaac does decided to come back yk?? anyway this next bit is for isaac
Tumblr media
ay isaac, if youre uhh reading this,, youre like. always allowed to rejoin miiblr, just please dont expect us to like, welcome you back in open arms or anything yk?? what you did and said was like. really arrogant and immature, but we cant stop you from rejoining miiblr. may things go the way you want in the future and that you'll get the help that you need soon. cheers.
big thanks to @wii-no-ma and @evanorasworld for the snapshots :]

It's been a week since Ted Lasso 3.09. I have typed and deleted a number of things about it without ever committing to Thoughts or Feelings, but the new (63 minute??) episode drops in a few hours, so ... I guess ... let's get into it.
Because here's the thing: This episode changed me. I'm a Ted Lasso Doylist now. This episode cracked the fourth wall for me, permanently cracked it, forcing me to let go of in-universe meaning.
The tipping point was something relatively small: Isaac pulling his hand away from Colin's in the team cheer.
That moment has nothing to do with Isaac the character. It's entirely for the audience - a misdirect intended to make us think that Isaac is homophobic, that he doesn't want to get gay on him. That moment looked me in the eye and winked, and I said, quote, "nothing means anything!! I give up!!" And I did. Reader, I gave up.
They could have told Colin's coming out story any number of ways (and I wish they had), but I get what they were going for with this one: straight friend handles coming out poorly, makes it about them. (They managed this pretty well with Ted!) The problem is that they stopped at "straight friend." Does the story make sense for Isaac? Not really, but that doesn't matter, because Isaac is only there to provide conflict and narrative misdirect. The story doesn't really have anything to do with him; he's just fulfilling a role in it.
Ted Lasso has done an admirable job of leaping right past "is this believable?" to build an accepting, loving, emotionally vulnerable football team overcoming despite the odds. No one in that locker room is a homophobe? Great. Coming out makes you a better player? Sure. "The real football strategy is the friends we made along the way"? If you insist.
Have you ever tumbled rocks? You wear off the edges, erase all the surface cracks and texture, polish to a shine. AFC Richmond is one big rock tumbler. Roy gets emotionally vulnerable with the press now. Jamie Tartt is an actual cinnamon roll now! Isaac, who started out as a bit of a bully falling in line with Jamie 1.0's bullshit, has become a caring leader and a moral pillar of the locker room.
By the midpoint of the show's third season, the main cast has been so thoroughly healed and uplifted and bonded to each other that conflict (if it's serious conflict, and not "what do we do on our night off") has to be external for it to ring true. The "is Isaac actually a homophobe?" story doesn't land because we know he isn't. We know full well the show isn't about that, so the brief attempt to convince us otherwise for the sake of drama doesn't work.
Take Trent Crimm, for example: now that the AFC Richmond rock tumbler has taken him from Trent Crimm, The Independent to goofy nervous Trent with the rainbow mug, would it be believable if he betrayed the team in any serious way?
(I have a whole separate post about that, but - another time.)
The show has tried to address this problem at various points this season. Jamie has become too good, too pure to be a focal point for locker room drama, so they brought in Zava. Roy and Keeley aren't super believable in conflict with each other (as we saw in season 2), but that's fine, because now their relationship is abruptly over and Keeley has fresh relationship drama with Jack. All of Rebecca's divorce angst growth from seasons 1 & 2 is spontaneously undone so that Rupert can drive the action as a uniting antagonist. All of Ted's divorce angst growth from seasons 1 & 2 is spontaneously undone to bring in conflict with Dr. Jacob.
Those plotlines mostly don't speak to where their characters have been. Jack's class solidarity turn veered right into victim blaming, and it never once felt like that was something the show was going to address; it only happened to tell the audience that Jack is Bad Actually. Now we're watching Keeley sit by her phone waiting to see if Jack is going to - what, forgive her?
Remember when Roy was an asshole to Keeley about her sex tape? Yeah, me neither. That was a wildly out of character moment added for spice, and the show has dropped it and moved on, so I have too.
I haven't even gotten to how extra true all of this is for Nate yet, but if I started in on that I'd miss the baseball game I'm going to tonight, and unlike season three of Ted Lasso, I actually care about sports. I'll save that for later.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Nothing means anything, and I have given up on in-universe meaning. Maybe tonight's episode will change my mind! It has an entire hour and three minutes in which to do so.

I feel an introduction is in order, yes?
Salutations, hola, hallo, 你好... Any way that it is put, the phrase still gives the same connotation: welcome.
My name is Mona. We’ll stick to a first name basis. I am 24 years of age, born on the twenty-eighth of June in 1998. If you have seen this account before with an uncharacteristic appearance, yet still very empty, that is the effect of my younger sibling owning the account.
That all has been handed to me.
Let’s see.. I have a dog named Blondie who I give my will to, a younger sibling whom I have bestowed protection and love upon, and a bottle of gin that I often find myself staring at myself in during the late hours of a long sun (a safe intake, of course). I live in the Southern U.S. My favourite book is The Picture of Dorian Gray, my favourite movie is Grave of the Fireflies, and my favourite musical artist is Molchat Doma. I was a student at Michigan State for only a semester before an unspoken misfortune took place in my life. I now live a comfortable life in my family of three.
This account has been made as a sort of escapism. Obviously, no one can ever really escape anything in their history physically and/or mentally, however it never hurts to try. I may post drabbles/one-shots, free verses/poems, monologues, anything that I feel is appropriate for the tone of the day.
Oh, yes, I’m also a HEAVY Pedro Pascal and Oscar Isaac fan. Stay tuned for that.
I do hope you find solace in my late-night authorings, whether that be from humor, arousal, drama, or somberness. Blessed be.
-M.L.B.

Each of the FGG start a YouTube channel. What kinda content would they produce and how successful would they be?
Evan: Vigilante justice content. Catches everyone from thieves to pedos. Donates all of his channel revenue to children's hospitals. Becomes quite successful but is eventually shut down for "interfering with the justice system".
Lukas: He's like the anti-Bob Ross. Paints sad little trees while he bitches about stuff. Hates everything he paints, so every video ends with him splashing white paint all over the canvas to start over. Channel gets a small cult following.
Glenvar: A let's play channel where he has to take a shot of whisky each time he loses the game. Ends up completely hammered by the end of each video and has never beaten a single game. His channel is like a trainwreck--it's a disaster but you just can't look away.
Alaine: Dancing and singing videos. Channel gets banned immediately for copyright violations even though they're her own original songs, because Youtube.
Jeimos: Makes a Mythbusters-type program where they solve various problems using science and engineering. The channel is a huge success, but they have to shut it down after a while because they spend so much time and effort on it that it's destroying their health.
Isaac: Wildlife content in the style of Steve Irwin's "The Crocodile Hunter", except extremely budget. The "exotic wildlife" he features are things like sparrows, ladybugs, and lizards he found in his yard. Averages like 5 views per video, but is clearly having the time of his life making them.
Linde: Starts off as a beauty channel, but quickly goes the way of all beauty channels and gets involved in a bunch of ridiculous drama. Hugely popular but for all the wrong reasons.
Balthazaar: Just posts random shit he filmed on his phone. You get videos like a crackhead going mental at the gas station, squirrels humping eachother, an altercation between a Karen and a Burger King employee...one of his videos happens to go viral and he gets a few bucks from it. Like, literally a few dollars and that's it.
Skel: It's like the hydraulic press channel, except he bends/breaks random things with his mind. Channel was going really well until he almost gave himself a stroke trying to bend a Nokia phone. Spent some time in the hospital after that one.
Javaan: Runs like 100 different sketchy channels where he just reuploads stolen videos and illegally streams shows, pocketing as much money as he can before they get shut down.
Elska: A review channel where she tests and rates different weapons. Has a huge following of simpy dudes who send her their collections of shitty mall-ninja swords just to watch her break them.
Mr. Ocean: Has just one video uploaded to his channel, and it's a 1-hour video of the inside of his pocket that he took by accident. And somehow uploaded by accident. Someone needs to take his phone away from him...
Zeffer: Has a pleasant and totally normal gardening channel where he gives genuinely good advice and puts a lot of effort into his content. Becomes a famous face in the Youtube gardening community. Hippies and old ladies love him.

Production Description: Casting season 7 of "Billions." New money means no mercy as Mike Prince takes the Axe Capital throne. Chuck Rhoades is convinced no one should have that much wealth - or power. As all the players seek out new alliances, only one thing's for certain - wealth means war.

(same season-long filming dates as the taylor stand-in. i doubt these are hedge fund employees, as past casting calls for that purpose used finance-specific terms like “preppy or hedge fund types,” “hedge fund, capital investment types,” “portfolio manager/trader types,” or “financial analyst types.” this is most likely a tech company we haven’t seen before. maybe one of prince’s businesses?)
Lawyer Types (SAG/NON-SAG COVERED): Background / Extra, All Genders, 25-65. Seeking people to portray a Lawyer Types for Billions. We are seeking people with OPEN/FLEXIBLE availability from November 2022 - May 2023. This will be continuous work in NYC for the season. Ethnicity: All Ethnicities. [Posted November 8]

(according to this glossary of film terms, ND here stands for “non-descript,” which is not what i’m used to that initialism meaning.)
Restaurant Patrons (NON-SAG COVERED): Background / Extra, All Genders, 18+. Seeking people to portray a Restaurant Patrons for Billions. Tentative Dates: COVID Test: Tuesday 11/15, Shoot Date: Wednesday 11/16, Filming in NYC. Ethnicity: All Ethnicities. [Posted November 10]
(no clues offered about the type of restaurant, but the tentative shoot date is the same date as this filming location.)
‘Billions’ S7 (posted November 2; expires November 15; tentatively shoots November 17)
Production Description: Casting Season 7 of the Showtime drama series "Billions."
Photo Double for Asian Male Actor, 5'9-5'11, Dark Hair: Background / Extra, Male, 21-45. GWC is seeking people to portray a photo double for an Asian Male Actor (SAG-AFTRA COVERED). Fitting TBD before work date + possible future TBD dates throughout the season (through May 2023). Please note all sizes. Ethnicity: Asian, Ethnically Ambiguous / Multiracial, Southeast Asian / Pacific Islander. [Posted November 2]
(most likely ben kim, as daniel k. isaac is 5’10” according to imdb. should we perhaps expect you will get sick to extend or transfer?)
Restaurant Patrons (NON-SAG COVERED): Background / Extra, All Genders, 18+. Seeking people to portray a Restaurant Patrons for Billions. Tentative Dates: COVID Test: Tuesday 11/15, Shoot Date: Wednesday 11/16, Filming in NYC. Ethnicity: All Ethnicities. [Posted November 11]
(yes, this is identical to the call for restaurant patrons from two bullet points ago. which makes sense, because the first one was posted less than 24 hours before the listing it was on expired.)
‘Billions’ Season 7 (posted November 14; expires November 17; shoots November 18 in Brooklyn)
Production Description: Casting season seven of "Billions," a Showtime drama series.
Photo Double for Principal Female Actor: Background / Extra, Female, 18-45. GWC is seeking people to portray a photo double for a principal female actor (SAG-AFTRA covered). Height: 5'10-5'11, size 6/8. Brunette, should/collarbone length hair. Note: Talent should be willing to receive hair cut to match principal's if needed. Note all sizes: height, weight, bust-waist-hip, dress, and shoe. Ethnicity: White / European Descent. [Posted November 14]
(the height and age match eva victor, but the haircut — which should probably be “shoulder/collarbone length hair” — isn’t what rian had in season 6. maybe she’s going back to the mid-s5 haircut? those group photos asia and toney posted the day of the first s7 table read don’t show eva’s hair in full, so it’s possible.)

Oscar Isaac & Julianne Moore Cast In Spotify’s New Fiction Podcast “Case 63”
Fiction podcasts have grown in popularity in the last two years, actually threatening the dominance of true-crime shows in the podcast universe. One major reason for this growth in interest can be attributed to an influx of talent from Hollywood. And it’s not just the actors, but writers and producers.
Of course, we will know when fiction podcasts have reached nirvana when “Leo” announces he will do an audio drama.
But there’s significant news with the announcement that Spotify’s newest scripted original podcast, Case 63, has cast Academy and Emmy Award-winning actress Julianne Moore and Golden Globe-winning actor Oscar Isaac have been cast in Both also serve as executive producers on the podcast.
Launching later in 2022, Case 63 follows psychiatrist Eliza Knight (Moore), who records the sessions of an enigmatic patient, registered as Case 63 (Isaac), who claims to be a time traveler. What begins as routine therapeutic sessions, quickly turns into a story that threatens the boundaries of the possible and the real.
The highly anticipated series is an adaptation of “Caso 63,” Spotify’s most listened to scripted original podcast in Latin America, originally produced in Santiago, Chile. The epic conclusion of the story of Pedro Roiter & Dra. Aldunate in “Caso 63” is coming soon, as it returns for its third and final season later this year in its Spanish and Portuguese versions.
The podcast ranked №1 in the Spotify Top Charts for nearly a month in Argentina & Mexico post-premiere, №1 in the Trending Charts across 5 countries: Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico & the United States. In addition to the U.S. and Latin America, the podcast was also adapted in India to “Virus 2062,” reached №1 on Spotify’s local Trending chart there, and was in the top 5 on Spotify’s local Top Podcasts charts. “Paciente 63,” the Brazilian adaptation, ranked #1 in Brazil’s local Trending Podcasts chart the day after its premiere, and remained there for over two weeks. “Paciente 63” also reached #1 on Brazil’s Fiction charts, and remained there for over a month.
Caso 63 marks the first time a Spotify original podcast from one of the non-English speaking markets has been adapted into multiple languages, including this English version, highlighting Spotify’s audio reach and commitment to bringing high-quality storytelling to all markets and regions around the world.
Case 63 is produced by Spotify’s Gimlet, Moore’s production company FortySix and Isaac’s Mad Gene Media. Caso 63 was created and originally written by Julio Rojas.
Julianne Moore won an Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG Award, among others for her role in Still Alice with Kristen Stewart, Alec Baldwin and Kate Bosworth in 2015. In 2014, she received the Palme D’Or, Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for her work in Maps To The Stars. Moore is the ninth person in Academy history to receive two acting Oscar nominations in the same year for her performances in Far From Heaven (Best Actress nomination) and The Hours (Best Supporting Actress nomination), after receiving many critics’ awards as well as SAG and Golden Globe nominations for both.
The paragraph above only scratches the surface of Ms. Moore’s achievements in film and TV. In addition, she is a best-selling children’s book author.
Oscar Isaac is a critically acclaimed and award-winning actor, producer and musician. In 2016, he earned a Golden Globe for his role on the HBO miniseries Show Me A Hero in the Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film category as well as a Critics’ Choice nomination for Best Actor in a Movie or Miniseries. Two years prior, he scored an Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead and a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of the title character in the Coen Brothers’ film Inside Llewyn Davis.
Tumblr media
He additionally was featured on numerous songs on the film’s soundtrack. That same year, Isaac led J.C. Chandor’s action-packed drama, A Most Violent Year, for which he earned the National Board of Review Award for Best Actor with the film earning the Best Film nod. The following year, Isaac starred in Ex Machina written and directed by Alex Garland.
Mr. Isaac is probably best known to fans as the Resistance pilot, Poe Dameron, in the highly awaited Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the seventh installment in the main Star Wars film series.
Most recently, Isaac starred in Marvel Studio’s Moon Knight on the Disney Plus streaming service.
With two actors of such skill and experience as Moore and Isaac involved, as well as a concept that has already fascinated listeners in other countries, Case 63 seems like a winner.
Check out Case 63 later this year. Or, if, like Isaac’s character in Case 63, you can time travel, please contact me when you return from the near future and let me know how you liked the show.
My bet: Thumbs Up.

aha hey I just saw your recent post ( I'm not sure if your requests are open or not very sry ) but I'm a sucker for angst with a happy ending or hurt/comfort can I have the same thing as the theo first fight but w arthur, comte, leonardo and/or isaac :)? idk what the character limit is thank uu
So . . . for reaction posts or what-if scenarios, I don’t mind multiple characters - each piece is a bulletpoint or vignette, short and sweet. But for a full story, I take just one character or characters directly involved with the drama otherwise one ask ends up being like, 6K-10K words - too much!
For this ask, I picked Isaac because I don’t get many requests for him and he’s so precious! If you want something with one of the other characters, just put in another ask ^_^
Approx. 2000 words of angsty Isaac with a happy ending!
Isaac was close. The formulas written in tiny, cramped script across the page practically sang to him. There was a truth here, one he was -
“I brought you a sandwich!” A cheerful voice snapped him out of his reverie. She set the tray down on his table with a flourish.
“Thanks,” he mumbled, trying to get his mind back to that cusp. But the link, the variable solution he knew must be close, escaped him.
His beloved was completely unaware of any of his current crises. She sat down in one of his chairs and put her feet up on the divan. “Sebas has me running around like a madwoman today. We cleaned all the first floor windows and -”
Isaac turned his head to frown at her. “Can you tell me about your exciting day later?”
Her expression fell at his tone. “Oh. Sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt.”
“Yes, well you have. Now if you don’t mind?”
She stood, her gaze fixed on her shoes. “Yes, of course. Sorry again.” The door closed behind her with a solid click.
Isaac sighed. A woman’s emotions were as delicate as the crystalline structure of a heterometallic polymer. He’d need to have a word with her later. Apologize and all that. But right now, he absolutely had to grasp the concept that had slipped away.
A few hours later the door creaked open again and in she stepped, as lightly as she could. She picked up the tray and swept the crumbs from the table onto the plate. Her eyes lingered on Isaac’s bent head, but she didn’t say a word.
Her heart still stung from the earlier reprimand. But she’d known when she set her cap for him that Isaac was a prickly beast. He needed his study time, and anyhow, she had her own things to worry about. Then her foot caught the edge of the carpet and she went down in a crash of breaking porcelain.
“Gods damnit,” Isaac shouted, leaping to his feet.
“Don’t you dare yell at me,” she got to her knees, dusting the bits of broken glass and shards from the plate and tea set off her. “I was trying to be quiet.”
Isaac took a step back. “I wasn’t yelling at you.” He looked her over. “Are you quite alright?”
She stood up the rest of the way. “Fine. I’m fine,” she spoke tersely. “Sorry to interrupt again. I’ll just get a broom and get out of your way as soon as I can.”
He wasn’t sure why she was so upset. He’d been a bit short with her before but surely not enough to deserve this kind of attitude. “Why are you so emotional about this? You fell and I am just asking-”
“Shut up, Isaac. Just shut up. I said I’m fine.” She took a step toward the door, but he wasn’t going to let her leave on that note.
“Clearly, that is not accurate.” Isaac stepped into her path, blocking the exit.
She huffed. “I don’t want your fake sympathy. Just . . . go back to your notes or whatever. I’ll finish up quietly. You won’t even know I’m here.”
“Fake?” Isaac wilted under her stare.
“Yeah. Fake.” She sniffed and Isaac noted the drops on her lashes, the dampness in the corner of her eyes as she held back tears. “I’m n-not as important as your research. I know . . . I know that. It’s fine. So don’t pretend stuff. Ok?”
He felt a shard of ice through his heart at the misery in her expression. It was not the first time, and unlikely to be the last time, that he felt completely unequal to the task of loving her. Isaac understood the movements of stars and planets and the forces that underpinned the natural world . . . but he felt he might never understand the vagaries of the human heart. With what casual disregard one could unravel the careful stitching connecting one soul to another.
Isaac turned and left.
She watched him go, feeling her heart torn in two. It seemed she could never be the right woman for him. She was too stupid, too clumsy, too loud . . . always too much or never enough. And she didn’t have the words to explain that she loved him, spines and all . . . that what Isaac found precious, she did as well, simply because it mattered to him.
Isaac’s steps took him out the gate and down the road, all the way to the outskirts of Paris. He didn’t notice the cobblestone street beneath his feet, or the houses he passed. His head was down and his mind, elsewhere.
He knew he’d hurt her again, and worse, run away instead of apologizing. But he wasn’t sure what to say . . . she was so bright, her sweetness and beauty so much more than he deserved. How could he tell her that she mattered more than anything, especially after the way he’d snapped at her earlier?
Arthur would probably know what to say. He knew his way around women. But Isaac would be damned before asking that cad for anything. Le Comte, perhaps, would also have some sage advice but the idea of taking a relationship question to the ancient pure blood made Isaac squirm.
He had to figure this out himself. He sat down on a low, stone wall and took out a notepad and a bit of charcoal. Imagine the problem as math, he thought. If he and she were constants, and their words and actions the variables . . . what equation could result in love?
He was deep into his work and on the third page of notes when a clear, high pitched cough interrupted him.
“Whatcha doin, mister?” A child, covered in grime head to toe, stood, watching. “You been sittin’ there a long time. You some kinda artist?” The child tried to get a look at the notepad.
“Ah, no. No!” Isaac shut it quickly, feeling unnerved at the idea of sharing his chaotic attempt to understand love as a formula.
“Huh. So what then?”
Isaac felt his cheeks heat. “Nothing you need to concern yourself with. I should ask what a child is doing out alone at this hour!”
The kid shrugged. “Same thing I usually do, digging around for some food. ‘Cept today I saw you.”
“Oh! Are you - are you hungry?” Isaac felt at his pockets for his wallet.
“Nah. I don’t need yer charity.” The child gave another shrug. “I got plenty. There’s always somethin’ good out back of the cafes. Sometimes it don’t even have bugs on it!”
Suddenly, the enormity of his problems seemed very small and very silly. He had a home and food and a woman that loved him, even if for reasons he could never understand. And all that stood in the way of his happiness was an apology.
Isaac smiled at the boy. “It’s not charity, young fellow. I need you to run an errand for me. If you have time, that is.”
“Oh! Well if it’s a job, sir, then sure!”
He sent the boy off to buy up the prettiest flowers and took himself off to pick up a sweet. If he was to apologize, he planned to do it well.
Sebastian met him at the door with a raised eyebrow. And no wonder. The boy brought back a flower shop’s worth of red, pink, and white roses. Isaac nearly hadn’t managed the walk back, with that and the box of sweets.
“I see you’ve decided to alleviate our suffering?”
“What?” Isaac peered past Sebas. Behind him, he could hear crashing, banging, and shouted curses.
“She came downstairs with a terrifying smile on her face and a promise to ‘clean the kitchen like never before’ right after you left . . .” Sebastian sighed. “We are all afraid to go in there. I’m . . . I’m not sure I’ll have a kitchen left when she’s done.”
Isaac coughed politely. “Well she uhm, she does like to keep busy.”
“As you say.” Sebastian gestured him in and pointed the way. “We are all rooting for you.”
Alone, Isaac went through the doors to the kitchen. There were pots and pans, crockery, baking pans, moulds, and unidentifiable cooking tools scattered everywhere. His beloved was buried in an open cabinet, with just her back legs sticking out.
“Are you . . . quite alright in there?”
She did something odd with her legs as if she was trying to jump and scoot all at once, and he heard a dull thud as she hit the cabinet with her head. “Ah - ow, ouch.”
“Do you need some help?” Isaac set the goodies down atop a tottering pile of pans and leaned over to help her.
With a little assistance, she wiggled back out of the cabinet. She was covered in dust and her hair stuck up in all kinds of directions, but she was the most lovely sight Isaac had laid eyes on.
“I-” they both began at once and then stopped, eyeing each other suspiciously.
“You first,” she said, her glance drifting to the flowers and back.
Isaac cleared his throat, his eyes fixed on the floor at his feet. “I’m sorry. I am quite often a complete fool. Especially where you are concerned. I . . . I am not good at showing you how completely in love with you I am. It seems, every chance I get, I say something foolish or off-putting. I’ve made you feel as if my - my research matters more than your affection. And that’s not so. I’d give it all up in a heartbeat to ensure even just one more moment at your side. I am . . . difficult and . . .”
“Shut up.”
He lifted his gaze to see her smile. The corners of her lips curled up, and there was a glint of some wicked mischief in her eyes. “But I wanted to say-”
And before he could apologize again, she’d kissed him. Her lips were warm and soft and lit a fire in him that belied his gentle demeanor. His hands went ‘round her back and lifted her up onto the counter. The kiss deepened from sweet to sultry and passionate.
“I love you,” he murmured between breathless kisses.
“Mmm, th-that’s my line,” she sighed, eliciting a small laugh from him as he moved from her lips to her throat. “I should apologize too. For not listening. For . . . being . . . too . . .”
His kisses left little red marks, the slightest scrape of his fangs. “No, you’re perfect, my love. Perfect.”
Though he knew he shouldn’t, he dearly wanted to unbutton her shirt and bite the swell of her breast, in that perfect space beneath her collar bone. And lap at her blood and make love to her until . . .
“I-Isaac . . .”
He looked up, realizing he’d begun on those buttons.
“Let’s take this upstairs.”
He laughed sheepishly. “I . . . suppose I interrupted you this time. I hope it’s alright.”
She smiled. “More than. But next time, try not to have your spines out around me. I’m fragile.”
“Not too fragile, I hope.” He gave her a wolfish smile, only half ashamed of himself.
“Pffft. You are incorrigible.” She batted at his shoulder playfully.
“And you aren’t?” He lifted her into his arms, his slight frame no impediment to vampiric strength.
“I never said that.” She gestured to the flowers and pastry box. “Don’t forget to bring the goodies too.”
Isaac awkwardly managed to rescue the items, resting the box on his hip and having her hold the roses. They made it to his room and he shut the door with a kick. Then he laid her on his bed. “I meant it, you know. That you mean more to me than anything. I plan to get better at showing you my love. In everything I do.”
She smiled and wiggled underneath him. “Seems like the perfect place to start.”

Yandere! Isaac Lahey
Ship: Yan!Isaac Lahey x Reader
Warnings: Slight obsessive behavior, mentioned domestic abuse.
Requested by: @flower-slut00
Notes: You can expect a Yan!Tom Riddle and Yan!Newt post soon!
Tumblr media
It was already eight and you were sure you’d freeze to death before he arrived. For all you knew he wasn’t coming, the mere idea made you bite your inner cheek.
He’d said 5:30 but he was nowhere to be seen and at this rate you would finish the English project all by yourself. But you knew Isaac was a good guy, he should be somewhere near, right?
Well, in all truth you didn’t really had an idea of how this Isaac boy was, you could barely remember a mass of blonde curls that would only stay in a corner, never calling much attention to himself, but you knew he got good grades, at least good enough, even if he’d get mad when they weren’t excelling.
You felt in heaven with as much as a B- but if he ever got a similar grade he’d beg the corresponding teacher to grade it again, you never understood him, but you never paid much mind to his actions either, at least not until the teacher had looked you dead in the eye and paired you with him.
You had at least thought that he’d have the decency to appear on time. You started mentally preparing yourself to start the project on your own, maybe you’d make a pretty diagram and draw the images Isaac was meant to bring.
A sigh of relief left you as soon as you heard a knock on the door, at least the pizza had arrived on time. You jumped to your feet and started walking to the desk near the door where you kept the money.
Opening the door mixed feelings filled you, at first glance you saw the blonde curls and thought about reprimanding him for being so late when he’d been tha one to choose the best hour for both of your schedules.
And then you saw his black eye and bloody cheekbone.
“Get in” you made space through the door for him to come in. You thought he’d gotten in a fight. You were wrong.
Without asking questions you signaled for him to sit on the couch you were previously occupying as you went to the kitchen, hoping that there would be some frozen stuff for him to put on his eye.
But there wasn’t much to use, only some ice cream and ice cubes. You could hear him getting his stuff ready to work, and you make the decision to get a small towel, fill it with ice and close it with a blue hair tie you had in your arm.
“What’s that for?” The voice behind you made you jump, he was creepily quiet for being so tall. He chuckled softly at your big eyes and covered it with a cough, going back to his quiet facade “Sorry”
“It’s for your eye” you wasted no time on handing it to him, he seemed to consider it though “It will help” at least it did when you had accidentally bumped your head with the floor “Do you want an aspirin?”
He tilted his head to the right, his good eye scrunching a bit, almost as if he tried to see you better, it reminded you of something that you couldn’t quite pinpoint “Why do you care?” He asked abruptly.
For a second you thought that you’d crossed some sort of line and he’d be mad about it, but his voice wasn’t harsh, nor was it sweet, it was actually confused.
You opened your mouth to answer, but you didn’t know why you cared, for all you knew he was a stranger that came all bloody to your house to make a project with you. He was about to give it back and you knew it so you said the first thing that came to your mind “Friends help each other” so much for binging that corny high school drama.
He almost laughed “We aren’t friends” was his only response, he knew you weren’t friends, he barely even knew you for that sake, the implication alone was ridiculous. You decided to stubbornly stick to that argument “But we could be” you shrugged and realized he still didn’t look too convinced “Okay, let’s at least be friends tonight, if you don’t want to be friends after that you’re free to never talk to me again” you added the last part with a smile and winked. He blushed and looked the other way muttering a quick “Whatever”
But he didn’t let go of the ice-towel.
Soon after starting the project the pizza arrived, and before you noticed it you were setting it on the table as Isaac brought the soda, you bit your lip slightly, you’d been working for almost an hour and still you hadn’t talked about anything other than the project.
“Okay, let’s put it all aside and watch some TV while we eat” you two had just finished setting everything up before you spoke he did a double take when he noticed you staring straight into him “But we still haven’t finished it” he seemed actually concerned about it “We still have two more days, we can continue it here or at the library or your house-“ he stopped you there “Not my house” it was almost too quick and closing off himself again.
Oh. It clicked in your mind seconds before you actually understood it. But you wouldn’t let him close off again.
“Okay, not your house, but the offer remains, we have time to finish it and it’s not really that long” you were already turning the TV on, muted for him to actually make up his mind but on for him to know that you did want to watch something “Listen, I said I wanted us to be friends, and I mean it, how are we going to be friends if we don’t talk?”
He appeared to be taken back and only nodded, you were quick to select Netflix and gave him the remote “You’re the guest, you choose” he gave you a half smile and started looking through the titles as you started eating.
The rest of the days you had set up for the project went in a blink of pizza, laughter and meaningless talk. He seemed to start opening up by the end of it, still not completely but he was opening up.
Suddenly it wasn’t about you being stubborn, you actually wanted to know more about him. But the time you two had designated was almost over, and you realize you didn’t really want it to end.
“You better not ditch me tomorrow Lahey” you said suddenly with a smile “I’m actually invested on us being friends” he started to smile too, his whole face getting more of a pink color.
As soon as the words left your mouth he wanted to scream, to grab you by the shoulders and shake you so hard that you’d tell him the truth, he was never one to have much friends, if any at all, and he’d actually grown to like you on the little time you had actually talked to each other.
It would hurt him badly if you were lying. Thankfully for him you weren’t.
As for you, that may as well have been your only exit, he wasn’t obsessed nor in love yet, you could have left easily, but you lost your chance.
The next morning as you arrived five minutes early for the first class you noticed an empty seat by his side, you gave him your nicest smile as you walked to him, you asked if the seat by his side was taken and he was quick to shake his head and offer it to you, he felt hysterical butterflies on his stomach at the fact that you hadn’t been lying only to finish the project.
And you spent the rest of the week with him, he was nice and real, more real than any of your other friends had been never leaving you by your own during school which your anxiety really appreciated.
As for him his heart was melting but his stomach ached, what if you got bored of him? That feared almost ate him, you had been the nicest person he’d known, and also his only friend.
Soon he started feeling angry when anyone else talked to you, he was afraid that they’d whisk you away and he wouldn’t be able to do anything about it.
After some days of him arriving with new bruises you tried to talk with him about it, but he’d always stop you, wanting his time with you to be more pleasing. So you did what you could and started bringing numbing creams and aspirins.
The first time you treated him he saw that they were new “Did you got hurt on P.E?” Was his only question as you applied some cream on his upper arm, “No, why?” You gave him a short answer as you bit your cheek, you didn’t like him getting hurt.
“Then why did you bring these?” He asked, you were quick with an already rehearsed answer “The aspirins are for my migraines and I had the cream laying around, I thought to bring it in case anything happened” but something inside him clicked in place, you cared about him, you’d brought the cream just for him, and then he made a promise to himself, to never let you go.
After that he started blushing more frequently around you, quickly noticing little things, the way the left corner of your mouth turned upwards when he made a joke during class and you tried not to laugh and keep a staright face, how you’d grab his sleeve and tug on it when you wanted to go somewhere else but were too lost on your own thoughts to say anything, and finally, how easy it was to make you blush or laugh, both things he really liked causing.
He realized he had a crush on you when during class the Stilinski boy had given the teacher one of his usually weird and vague responses and you laughed, unable to stifle it for long enough, at first Isaac himself had thought the response was funny, but when Stiles turned to awkwardly smile at you he wanted to punch him repeatedly in the face.
It only got worse after the bite, you were everything that anchored him to himself, everything he’d ever want, and he felt this urge to torn every guy who dared smile or even look at you. Soon you couldn’t remember the last person you’d talked to that wasn’t him or Derek or Erika, the only people he trusted with you. It had taken long for him to get rid of everyone else, but he’d enjoyed making a show of it, using some of his newly gained strength to frighten possible competition, until they couldn’t even look at you anymore.
One night he’d brought you some fast food, his heart hammering, he had made two choices for that evening, if you decided to stay with him he would be the happiest person alive, but in case you said no he’d made a deal with Derek to take you away.
Not too far, he’d take you to a place Derek owned, that was the deal for him to stay as his beta, a deal he wouldn’t have been happier to take.
You opened the door and he noticed that you were quick to smile, a point on his favor. “What’s today?” You asked staring at the food with a smile “Nothing yet” he answere muttering the last part with a nervous smile “Then what’s the food for?”
He had rehearsed an answer for every possible question but here, looking at you, he forgot everything and then a memory took over him “It’s what couples do” his smile was growing wider and you looked confused “We aren’t a couple” you were trying to make sense of his words.
“We could be”

i was halfway through a post about this last night when tumblr ate it for power, so i went to bed, but now i’m back and i'm here to say:
gideon the ninth: the netflix series
like, it’d work??? it’s got a similar vibe to warrior nun, which was pretty popular. i have thought about how i would divide it up extensively. and now i am going to talk about it. a lot.
three arcs, with four episodes each, for a total of twelve episodes covering the first book. arc one, enemies. arc two, friends. arc three, lovers, which doesn’t even really fit but i'm too charmed by the idea of enemies-to-friends-to-lovers as story arcs to take it back now.
EPISODE ONE opens with gideon packing up her things, tying her shoes, leaving her security cuff and its key nicely on her cell's pillow, and absconding; all of this overlaid with some sick music. guitar riffs. something upbeat and a little cool, and tonally dissonant from the setting of the dreary ninth house.
from there we go through the first few chapters of the book, the confrontation with crux, aiglamene, and harrow, mass, the letter from the emperor, all the way up to gideon realizing that her ship has taken off with out her. episode ends with
gideon: why? harrow: because i completely fucking hate you, no offense.
episode two: opens with gideon lying face-down on her cot in her cell, she's depressed, but like in a funny way. the viewer is amused. harrow shows up to kick her out of bed.
then we go through everything - gideon “agreeing” to be harrow’s cav, training, final mass - up until she and harrow leave for caanan house. they get on their ship. we see earth from orbit, ooh, aah, it's a big moment. ends with them about to breach the atmosphere:
harrow: i want to watch you die. gideon: maybe, nonagesimus, maybe. but you sure as hell won't do it here.
episode three: landing at caanan house. meeting dulcinea. all the onboarding stuff with teacher and the early days where gideon is left to her own devices. dueling magnus.
the climax of this episode is dueling babs, ending on gideon looking away from the aftermath of the fight and locking eyes with harrow, who has been watching from the shadows the whole time. it's a very intense moment. harrow turns and walks away.
episode four: exploring caanan house. dulcinea. mysterious, airy, almost nostalgic music plays when she calls out for gideon on the terrace.
searching for harrow. the meat of this episode is all about meeting the sixth house, going down into the basement with them, and finding harrow, asleep in her bone, like an asshole. end the episode with gideon and harrow's argument about gideon's duties as a cavalier; they agree to work with each other - completing their first character arc. end episode four.
ARC TWO: FRIENDS (DUBIOUSLY). EPISODE FIVE. the first laboratory, which is the regenerating skeleton. dinner with the fifth. gideon and harrow leaving early for the labs, completing the trial at the end of the episode. as they're leaving, they stumble across the bodies of the fifth house... dead. drama! cliffhanger
episode six: opens like chapter seventeen, with the assumption that everyone's been investigating the crime scene for several hours. they get called back up by teacher, who thinks there are monsters down there. netflix intro plays.
gideon and harrow investigate the first study; gideon finds the notes with "her" name. harrow reluctantly agrees to help dulcinea with the siphoning trial, which is the real meat of the episode. dulcinea says a bunch of cryptic shit with gideon in her arms. harrow completes the trial. episode ends with gideon passing out. ooh! aah. another cliffhanger
episode seven begins w gideon being woken by camilla, all that stuff about keys with sixth, talking to them in the morgue, only to realize that the fourth are eavesdropping. ("i often find myself wondering how dangerous they really are.") next scene: gideon training, isaac comes to get her because jeannemary found human remains in the incinerator; that scene, which gideon leaves only to find dulcinea collapsed in the rain. reveal that protesilaus is missing. ("he never came back!")
episode eight: briefly talking to dulcinea, but mostly the duels for the keys. afterwards gideon goes to the basement with the forth house to investigate. isaac dies. gideon takes jeanne to the study where she thinks it'll be safe. end with gideon jolting awake and finding jeanne dead. "SWEET DREAMS" written in her blood. END ARC TWO.
episode nine: open in the morgue, where the teens are laid out to rest. gideon is hysterical, talks to dulcinea, flees the room, talks to the eighth. harrow negotiates with the sixth for information; the gummed up door. gideon and harrow fight. end with gideon asking to be released to the seventh house.
harrow: when i release you from my service, nav, you'll know.
acting like a... jealous lover??? lmao anyways things look dire!
episode ten: gideon's conversation with the eighth house. finding protesilaus's head with harrow's things. bringing that information to the sixth house, confronting dulcinea. the pool scene. (why is episode ten always the big Emotional Reveal of a show... i am thinking about madoka magica hard right now) anyways this is why it’s the lovers arc. ends with one flesh, one end, gideon gets shoved back into the pool. she emerges sputtering and laughs.
episode eleven: the sixth and the ninth investigate a study together, and the fire alarm goes off. i think someone would say something cryptic here and then the intro would play LOL. like it's not even five minutes of the episode.
the bulk of this one is the confrontation with ianthe, who has become a lyctor. the eighth dies. like 2/3 of the way through the episode gideon runs after sextus, which is when she overhears his conversation with dulcinea. end sextus exploding, cytherea emerging.
"i have come to kill the emperor and burn his houses. and gideon the ninth... this begins with you."
episode twelve: you know what happens from here. bbeg fight, climaxing with things looking grim, hiding in the bone shield, gideon throwing herself onto the iron spike. harrow ascends. they defeat cytherea. harrow pulls at gideon's body and sits with it. maybe she holds her hand? sad music plays.
the camera pans up from that, from them, up, and up, and up, to a very blue sky. eventually the sky darkens. we see stars. we see space. i think maybe something bright streaks across the sky, to imply that boe has arrived. but eventually we see a ship. harrow wakes up on the erebos, meets the emperor, and pledges herself to him.
"rise... harrowhark the first."
END SEASON ONE
anyways i also think another plus is that one of the big “twists” of this book is that the main character fucking dies. and you KNOW tv entertainment is all about that shit. like, doing what the viewer doesn’t expect? look at game of thrones. except it actually works here for obvious reasons. netflix would eat that shit up.

Hispanic/Latino horror movies
In honor of Hispanic Heritage month, this week we talked about horror movies out of Latin American and Spanish speaking countries. There were some we couldn’t get to so here is the full list:
Spain
The Devil’s Backbone (2001)
Rotten Tomatoes: 92%
Audience Score: 89%
Google Score: 85%
IMDb: 7.4/10
Critics Consensus: Creepily atmospheric and haunting, The Devil's Backbone is both a potent ghost story and an intelligent political allegory.
Description: “Set during the last years of the Spanish Civil War, The Devil's Backbone is a Spanish gothic horror movie that follows Carlos, a young orphan boy who is deposited at Santa Lucia School among several other children who have been displaced by the conflict. Though he finds friends in the professor and the head mistress, he is plagued by a wandering spirit with a link to the violent caretaker's secret past.”
Trivia: The movie, which he wrote in college and was in development for 16 years, is strongly inspired by Del Toro’s personal memories, especially his relationship with his uncle, who supposedly came back as a ghost. It is also included among the "1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" edited by Steven Schneider. Although filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is Mexican, this film is set in the Spanish countryside (largely filmed in Madrid) that’s why it’s on the Spanish list. The Devil’s Backbone has all of the impactful elements of spirituality, horror, and the supernatural that come up again and again in Del Toro’s work. This film has been referred to as the “brother film” of one of Del Toro’s best known works, Pan’s Labyrinth.
[REC] (2007)
Rotten Tomatoes: 89%
Audience Score: 82%
Google Score: 85%
IMDb: 7.4/10
Critics Consensus: Plunging viewers into the nightmarish hellscape of an apartment complex under siege, [Rec] proves that found footage can still be used as an effective delivery mechanism for sparse, economic horror.
Description: “Late-night TV host Angela and her cinematographer are following the fire service on a call to an apartment building, but the Spanish police seal off the building after an old woman is infected by a virus which gives her inhuman strength.”
Trivia: The movie was filmed chronologically in real locations (no sets were built for the movie). The actor’s were never given the script in its entirety and didn’t know what was going to happen to their characters until the day of filming. The movie is also a big inspiration for the horror survival game Outlast.
Considered The Blair Witch Project of zombie movies, REC had a lot of competition in the found footage style (it came out the same year as George Romero’s Diary of the Dead and the first Paranormal Activity movie). It more than holds its own among them, so much so that an American remake called Quarantine came out the next year. Director Jaume Balagueró keeps the movie disturbingly real and doesn’t fall prey to jump scare after jump scare.
Veronica (2017)
Rotten Tomatoes: 88%
Audience Score: 49%
Google Score: 80%
IMDb: 6.2/10
Critics Consensus: A scarily effective horror outing, Veronica proves it doesn't take fancy or exotic ingredients to craft skin-crawling genre thrills.
Description: “During a solar eclipse, a teenage girl and her friends want to summon the spirit of the girl's father using an Ouija board. However, during the session she loses consciousness and soon it becomes clear that evil demons have arrived.”
Trivia: Based on the true story of 18-year-old Estefanía Gutiérrez Lázaro. I won’t go too far into it because we may do an episode on it in the future but if you want spoilers, watch the movie (if you dare).
Directed by Paco Plaza (same as REC), the possession theme is done over and over again in horror but this movie is a terrifying and fresh take.
The Bar (2017)
Rotten Tomatoes: 88%
Audience Score: 55%
Google Score: 75%
IMDb: 6.3/10
Description: “In bustling downtown Madrid, a loud gunshot and two mysterious deaths trap a motley assortment of common urbanites in a decrepit central bar, while paranoia and suspicion force the terrified regulars to turn on each other.”
Directed by Álex de la Iglesia, it’s labeled as a horror-comedy. You can watch it on Netflix.
Who Can Kill A Child? (1976) - Tells the story of a happy couple, two English tourists who decide to vacation on a secluded island in the Mediterranean. There they discover – almost too late- that the island has been taken over by a group of murderous children.
The Baby’s Room (2006) - Featured on Six Films to Keep You Awake at Night. A new family renovates and moves into a grand old house. Nervous first-time mom installs a baby monitor but hears mysterious sounds on the other side. Once they install a high-tech video baby monitor, what they see chills them to the bone.
Sleep Tight (2011) - Apartment concierge Cesar is a miserable person who believes he was born without the ability to be happy. His self-appointed task is to make life hell for everyone around him, a mission in which he has great success. It has big home invasion/stalker vibes.
Timecrimes (2007) - A man accidentally gets into a time machine and travels back in time nearly an hour. Finding himself will be the first of a series of disasters of unforeseeable consequences. It sounds like a “Happy Death Day” type of plot (but proceeding it by a decade).
Thesis (1996) - Angela is doing her thesis on the effect of violence in the media when she discovers a snuff film. This discovery leads her down a dark path where she must confront her greatest fears and question everybody around her.
Witching and Bitching (2013) - One article I read said it perfectly, “What Shaun of the Dead did for zombies and What We Do in the Shadows did for vampires, Witching & Bitching essentially did for the cinematic depiction of witches, albeit on a less visible scale.” Great pick if you’re looking for something a bit more lighthearted.

Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)
Rotten Tomatoes: 95%
Audience Score: 91%
Google Score: 90%
IMDb: 8.2/10
Critics Consensus: Pan's Labyrinth is Alice in Wonderland for grown-ups, with the horrors of both reality and fantasy blended together into an extraordinary, spellbinding fable.
Description: After the Allies invade Nazi-occupied Europe, a sadistic captain sends a troop of Spanish soldiers to flush out rebels, bringing his new wife and her daughter along on his exploits. While his family resides in the countryside, he leads his men on a murderous rampage, much of which is witnessed by his step daughter. In an effort to escape her reality she plunges into Pan's Labyrinth, a mystical world at the border of her own.
Trivia: Guillermo del Toro is famous for compiling books full of notes and drawings about his ideas before turning them into films, something he regards as essential to the process. He left years worth of notes for this film in the back of a cab, and when he discovered them missing, he thought it was the end of the project. However, the cab driver found them and, realizing their importance, tracked him down and returned them at great personal difficulty and expense. Del Toro was convinced that this was a blessing and it made him ever more determined to complete the film. Del Toro also repeatedly refused offers from Hollywood producers, in spite of being offered double the budget, provided the film was made in English. He didn't want any compromise in the storyline to suit the "market needs" (he even did the English subtitles himself). The film received 22 minutes of applause at the Cannes Film Festival and in 2007, it became one of the few fantasy films ever nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars. It’s another on the list "1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" edited by Steven Schneider with The Devil’s Backbone. It was on more than 130 top 10 lists in 2006. It is also the 5th highest grossing foreign language film in the US.
The Similars (2016)
Rotten Tomatoes: 95%
Audience Score: 49%
Google Score: 75%
IMDb: 5.9/10
Critics Consensus: A smart homage to genre filmmaking, The Similars is a fun and frightening film that balances socio-political issues with aplomb.
Description: A monstrous, once-in-a-lifetime thunderstorm strands passengers in a remote bus station outside Mexico City in 1968. As they listen to the radio, they realized that the storm has spread all over the world. As they look at each other, they also realize that everyone’s faces are slowly changing, and not for the better.
Trivia: The film used make-up and special effects techniques never before done in Mexico. Director Isaac Ezban was influenced by B-movies of the 50s and 60s as well as TV shows and movies like “The Twilight Zone”, “The Thing”, and “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”.
We Are What We Are (2010)

Description: After a family patriarch dies, his survivors are tasked with continuing the rigid family rituals that involve hunting meat, preparing it for consumption, and eating it. The “meat” in question is human flesh, since they’re a family of cannibals. There was an English language remake in 2013 (86% on Rotten Tomatoes) with Wyatt Russell and Odeya Rush (Lady Bird, Dumplin’, and Goosebumps)
We Are The Flesh (2016) - A joint French-Mexican production released in Spanish as Somos la carne, this post-apocalyptic nightmare involves a brother and sister who roam the land desperately seeking food until a kindly old man takes them in under the condition that they help him renovate an abandoned building. Oh, and they also have to have sex with one another while he watches. And after he breaks their will by getting them to do that, he makes them do all sorts of other things. This film was one of only four in Mexico to receive a “D” rating—which is reserved for subject matter that is considered extremely disturbing and/or pornographic.
The Witch’s Mirror (1962) - An abusive and cheating husband kills his wife so that he can be with his mistress. The woman’s godmother was a witch who originally tried casting a spell on a mirror to protect her from domestic violence, but the spell failed. Still, she is able to bring the woman back from the grave, and the two witches set out to destroy the evil woman-beater.
Here Comes The Devil (2012) - A married couple lose their children while on a family trip near some caves in Tijuana. The kids eventually reappear without explanation, but it becomes clear that they are not who they used to be, that something terrifying has changed them.

Trivia: The plot is supposedly based on a true story that occurred in the 1940s in a small village in Uruguay. With a budget of just six thousand dollars, it was filmed using a handheld high-definition digital single-lens reflex camera (the Canon EOS 5D Mark II), 2 handheld lamps, and a couple of lightbulbs over a time period of just four days. The Silent House (2011) This is in English
Rotten Tomatoes: 43%

Google Score: 72%
IMDb: 5.3/10
Critics Consensus: Silent House is more technically proficient and ambitious than most fright-fests, but it also suffers from a disappointing payoff.
Description: Sarah is working with her father and uncle to renovate an old family home to prepare it for sale. Long vacant, the house has no utilities, forcing the trio to rely on battery-operated lanterns to light their way. Sarah becomes separated from her relatives and soon finds she is trapped inside the cabin, with no contact with the outside world. Panic turns to real terror as the young woman experiences events that become increasingly ominous.
Trivia: Elizabeth Olsen (Wandavision) The plot is based on a true story that occurred in the 1940s in a small village in Uruguay. Contrary to the marketing's claim that the film was shot in one uninterrupted take, the entire movie was actually shot to mimic one continuous real-time take, with no cuts from start to finish, as a result the time span of the film's plot is exactly 86 minutes. It was shot in roughly 10 minute segments then carefully edited to hide the cuts.
Night of the Living Dead (1968) - This along with the rest of the Dead series are the work of George A. Romero, whose father is from Cuba.
Ash vs. Evil Dead - I love the Evil Dead movies and although this series wasn’t perfect (I’m sure die-hard fans will say it's far from it), I still think it kept to the heart of the main story. Bruce Campbell is obviously perfect and the addition of Lucy Lawless is amazing, it’s really Puerto Rican actor Ray Santiago that steals the show.
The Others (2001) - Directed by globally renowned Spanish director Alejandro Amenábar, The Others starring Nicole Kidman is a Spanish gothic horror movie that combines elements of the supernatural, psychological, and mystical. It focuses on the strange events that occur at the estate of a woman and her young children, plagued by spirits in the aftermath of WWII. It has the distinction of being the only English-language Spanish movie to be given the Best Film Award at Spain's national film awards, the Goyas. In total, the movie has seven Goya Awards, including for Best Director. Although it might not read as particularly “Spanish,” it was produced, written and filmed all in Spain, shooting in Cantabria, Northern Spain and Madrid.

Great article about Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter - a poker movie that’s not really a poker movie...
Tumblr media
Some filmmakers write a hit movie and spend the ensuing years trying to escape its shadow. Paul Schrader never flinched. Forty-five years after his “Taxi Driver” script put him on the map, the writer-director has developed a body of work loaded with alienated anti-heroes compelled to violent and reckless extremes for the sake of a higher calling.
That includes “The Card Counter,” in which Oscar Isaac plays guilt-stricken Abu Ghraib vet William Tell, a man with a gambling addiction compelled to help the revenge-seeking son (Tye Sheridan) of a former colleague. Taking justice into his own hands, Isaac’s William Tell slithers through the Vegas strip in search of questionable salvation, not unlike a certain Vietnam vet named Travis Bickle did from the driver’s seat. As if to cement the comparisons, “The Card Counter” features Martin Scorsese as an executive producer, marking the first time the two men share a credit since 1999’s “Bringing Out the Dead.”
For Schrader, “Taxi Driver” comparisons are inevitable in all his work. “My tendency is to look for interesting occupational metaphors,” Schrader said in a recent interview. “‘Taxi Driver’ hit the bull’s eye of the zeitgeist and it doesn’t die. There’s no way I could’ve planned for that, but it does inform the stories I tell.”
At 75, Schrader continues to churn out movies much like his compatriot Scorsese, albeit on a much smaller scale. “The Card Counter” is the latest illustration of the secularized Christian dogma percolating through his work. “Our society doesn’t like to take responsibility for anything,” he said. “But I come from a culture where you’re responsible for everything. You come into the world soaked with guilt and you just get guiltier.” In his own prickly fashion, Schrader makes movies steeped in empathy for lost souls in search of redemption despite the daunting odds. “We’re all certainly capable of forgiveness,” he said, and chuckled. “Anyone who says otherwise is wrong.”
The “Taxi Driver” dilemma looms large in nearly all of Schrader’s work, from the dazzling high-stakes activism of “Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters” all the way through Ethan Hawke’s eco-conscious priest in “First Reformed.” While the latter, Oscar-nominated effort brought Schrader new fans, “The Card Counter” is an even more precise distillation of his aesthetic — a moody, philosophical drama about the vanity of the personal crusade.
Tumblr media
Schrader, who has labeled his homegrown character studies as “man in the room” dramas, embraces the parallels as usual. “There is this kind of myth that the taxi driver was this friendly, joking kind of guy who was a character actor in movies,” he said. “But the reality is that it’s a very lonely job, and you’re trapped in a box for 60 hours a week.” He saw the same logic with gambling, a wayward profession generally depicted in the movies in the context of escapist romps, rather than the somber rituals that afflict most players. “I thought about the essence of playing cards every day, or sitting in front of a slot machine. It’s kind of zombie-like,” Schrader said. “You see commercials of people in casinos laughing. But it’s a pretty glum place. Today with slots you don’t even have to pull the lever. You just sit there and let the numbers roll.”
The gambling figure led Schrader to the bigger picture of his character’s conundrum. “I was wondering why someone would choose to live in that sort of purgatory,” he said. “He doesn’t want to be alive, but he can’t really be dead, either. What could cause that? It can’t be a simple crime, murder, or a family dispute. It has to be something unforgivable. And that was Abu Ghraib.”
After the fallout of that debacle, William did time in a military prison, and reenters society before the movie begins. That was a world the filmmaker wanted to understand in clearer terms. Though Schrader has received blowback for his controversial Facebook posts in the past, in this case, the platform was an asset: He used it to track down soldiers who had done time in the United States Penitentiary in Leavenworth, the only military prison in the U.S., to better understand the initial claustrophobic world that Tell endures, as well as the conflict between the justice he’s received and what he deserves. “This man has been punished by his government, set free, and paid his due, but he doesn’t feel that,” Schrader said. “What does he do then? How does he fill his time? That’s how it all began.”
Schrader himself toyed with gambling when he lived in Los Angeles early in his career, but soon gave it up. “I very quickly realized I was only interested in gambling if it was really dangerous and I didn’t want to expose myself to that kind of danger,” he said. Years later, though, the experience helped inform his story. “There is this whole fantasy of gambling movies from ‘The Cincinnati Kid’ to ‘California Split,’” Schrader said. “But poker is all about waiting. People will play 10 to 12 hours a day and two to three times a day, a hand will happen where two players both have chips. Now you’ve got a face-off. But that doesn’t happen very often. Most guys who are there are running the numbers, the probability.”
He envisioned “The Card Counter” as a repudiation of the traditional poker movie, which builds to the giddy release of a final tournament. When that moment arrives in the movie, Schrader takes the movie in a bleak, shocking new direction. “It’s not really a poker movie — that’s a red herring,” he said.
William is immersed in his casino journey when he encounters Cirk (Sheridan), the crazy-eyed son of another Abu Ghraib soldier who committed suicide. Cirk blames the soldiers’ former commander (Willem Dafoe), and hopes to loop William into the plan. Instead, the older man decides to take Cirk under his wing to talk him out of the act, which doesn’t prove so easy. In the process, the gambler forms a curious bond with La Linda (Tiffany Haddish), a gambling agent and pimp whose icy, relentless drive to make the most out of the poker circuit brings William some measure of companionship on his wayward journey.
youtube
It should come as no surprise that the “Girls Trip” breakout is nearly unrecognizable in the role of the calculated La Linda, which is also a distinctly Schraderish touch: From his work with Richard Pryor in 1978’s “Blue Collar” all the way through Cedric the Entertainer’s supporting turn in “First Reformed,” Schrader has made a habit of seeking out comedic actors willing to play against type. That’s partly opportunistic on his part. “They’re eager to do it because they want to expand their palette, so you can get them for a price,” Schrader said, chuckling again. “That’s necessary, given the kind of films I make.” But that’s not all: “They will always find a way to be interesting, even when they’re not getting a laugh.”
Which is not to say that the process comes easily to them. Haddish recently told the New York Times that Schrader had to coach her out of speaking in a comedic sing-song. The filmmaker put it in blunter terms. “On the first reading of the script we had, frankly, she wasn’t very good,” he said. “I told her to go back and read every single line without emotion. Then I said, ‘You’re not going to do that in front of the camera, but you can’t hit every line either. So let’s pick five or six lines you can hit where you get a smile or reaction.’ Quickly she got that it was a different rhythm.”
As for Isaac, whose disquieting turn suggests a maniac lingering just beneath the surface, Schrader once again turned to metaphor. “I told him to imagine himself on a rocky coast in the ocean,” Schrader said. “Waves are going to come up and get you all day every day. They’re going to try to batter you. Let them. The waves will go away. You’ll still be there. Don’t compete. In the end, the rocks will win. You have to learn to trust that the way these things are put together has more power than the individual movement.”
William’s routine includes an odd ritual in which he covers all the furniture in his various Vegas hotel rooms with white paper. While the motivation is never explained, Schrader said it stemmed from an experience with production designer Ferdinando Scarfiotti on the set of 1982’s “Cat People,” when Schrader realized the man was doing the same thing. “He said, quite simply, ‘I have to live here surrounded by these ugly hotel furnishings,’” Schrader recalled. The concept inspired the new movie’s most compelling visual motif. “Casinos are very ugly places. There are no exceptions,” Schrader said. “Often you aspire to finding pockets of beauty and there weren’t really any here except the only place he could control, which was his hotel rooms, where he could privatize his visions. I came up with this ritual for him to control those visuals.”
At a certain point, Schrader himself couldn’t control the visuals of “The Card Counter” for more prosaic reasons: After an extra tested positive for COVID-19, the production shut down last March, with five days of shooting left, and couldn’t resume until July. Though Schrader initially took to Facebook to fume at his producers, the pause eventually opened up an opportunity to tweak his vision. “I edited the film and put in placeholders for the five or six scenes of consequence that I hadn’t shot,” he said. “I didn’t have a fully finished film but I could screen it for people. Normally you only get that privilege if you have a big-budget film and you’re allowed reshoots.” The early audience included Scorsese, who provided a crucial note. “I asked Marty, ‘What am I missing?’ He said to me that the relationship with Tiffany and Oscar was too thin. So I rewrote those scenes.”
Schrader asked Scorsese to take on the executive producer credit as a favor. “I said, ‘Marty, wouldn’t it be nice to share a card again? I thought it would help sell the film but it would also be a cool thing to do after all these years,’” Schrader said. “Then a couple of weeks later his agent called wanting to work out a deal. What deal? I asked Marty and he said yes. That’s the deal!” Now, the pair are trying to collaborate on a new long-form TV series based on the Bible, though the timing has been delayed by production on Scorsese’s upcoming “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

In the meantime, Schrader has been mulling over the way “Taxi Driver” not only continues to inform his storytelling but the world at large. “Hardly a week goes by that I don’t notice or hear some reference to it,” he said. “But I dont know how you’d tell such a story today. A number of writers have tried and I don’t think they’ve succeeded because it has to come out of a certain place and time. We have plenty of these incels around, but they’re not as original or revealing as they were 45 years ago when that character came on the scene. I wouldn’t know how to write about it.”
Instead, his next project is a love triangle called “Master Gardener,” which he hopes to shoot in Louisiana before the end of the year. He has several other potential scripts ready to go after that. And while he has expressed trepidation about the future of cinema in the past, he’s not convinced that audiences have given up on it yet. He recalled a conversation he had with Cedric the Entertainer when “First Reformed” made the rounds. “He said off-handedly to me, ‘You know, I didn’t realize there were so many people who liked serious movies,’” Schrader said, and chuckled once more. “Well, yeah, there are.”
“The Card Counter” premieres next week at the Venice Film Festival. Focus Features releases on September 10, 2021.
