And then this happened in cinemas across the world….Olga Smirnova & Jacopo Tissi were amazing.
I may have read this somewhere and just repeating it, but Olga seemed born for Act 2 of Giselle. She is otherworldly.

Ballet dancers Jacopo Tissi and Olga Smirnova in a production of the ballet Giselle at the Nationale Opera & Ballet of the Netherlands, 2024. Truly dark and romantic aesthetics in these photos, which fit the eerie story of the ballet.

I assumed he was already a principal at Dutch National Ballet but this announcement just dropped 💕
I’m just glad that we’ll be seeing more of him and Olga Smirnova again.

I was able to watch Alena Kovalev'a Nikiya from 7/23 or whatever (I may be getting the dates slightly wrong but close enough). I thought she's a much better Nikiya than anything else I've seen her in. Her vulnerability and innocence works for Nikiya and she doesn't have to worry as much about technique so she stays in character better. I also think she has much better chemistry with Belyakov even if he is a few inches too short for her. He seems very stable in his partnering and gives off very calming vibes which help her to settle down in the pas. I hope she is one that really starts growing as a principal dancer, because Bolshoi needs it. Also, something about her makes me like her even though she's not the strongest technical dancer. She would have made a great model if she hadn't pursued ballet professionally.
Although I do think Kovaleva's expressiveness and strengths suit La Bayadere, I disagree that Nikiya is a role where you don't have to worry as much about technique because ooof. Yes, there are a lot of moments for drama the whole shades act is basically a graduate-level technique class in pretty packaging. You have to do everything except fouettes. However, the ballet does have a lot more supported adagio, which is why she looks better here compared to Raymonda or something where she has a ton of variations to dance by herself.
I also preferred her dancing with Tissi because I think their lines parallel each other so well and I am a bigger Tissi admirer than most. But obviously, she'll be dancing with Belyakov more, because I don't think BT has another guy for her honestly. And yes he's a touch too short but he's a good partner. There's a reason why Zakharova keeps him around lol.

Valentine's day (a wee bit late)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I imagine they were terrible gossips together, at parties or elsewhere, when they just got together head to head or side to side mumbling and watching others, gossiping.
Her dress is inspired by the dress of Lou de Laâge as Kitty (princess Katerina Shtcherbatsky) in the miniserie of Anna Karenina from 2013 (with Vittoria Pucini), the one at the party at the beginning, so 1870s ish period, going on 1880s. The whole concept, facial expression, the fan, is coming from a picture of Olga Smirnova and Jacopo Tissi in the ballet Orlando, by Christian Spuck, photo by Natalia Voronova (Talia ballet on instagram). Levi's clothes are a mix of comte Saint Germain, in Outlander, season 2, and Jamie's boots in season 3.
In addition to that, talking about being late I have some Lunar New Year, Imbolc (pagan holiday, 1st of february) arts and a lantern festival OS to publish. I've been pushing it off for a few days now... but I really want to at least put the Lantern festival art and OS out.

I wonder if César Corrales is injured? He was supposed to dance Giselle with Osipova in Rome and was replaced by Jacopo Tissi, and now James Hay replaced him in the Wheeldon rehearsal.
