Can we talk about Jesper Fahey unintentionally being one of the most powerful Grisha in the Grishaverse? (Bear with me)

Okay, agreed, Jesper struggles with doing basically anything intentionally. Makes sense - he was never trained.

But if we consider what he can do; controlling the path of bullets. Taking tiny chunks of metal moving at ~120-370 m/s, and directing them. And not just a little bit. He literally managed to make his bullet curve 90° around a right-angle corner. This is a skill we see no other Fabrikator able to do, and you would have thought, if it was a common ability, or even ever seen before, the Darkling or the Triumvirate would have utilised it in the Second Army. They have not. The only people known to use it are Jesper and his mother.

(And let's just give an honourable mention to Aditi Hilli, who could extract poison from the bloodstream of another person. You remember how the tidemakers in the Ice Court needed to be on Parem to mess with a person's blood? But Aditi Hilli? ...I don't want to say no problem, because she did die, but she saved Leoni too, so... half-marks? I'm just saying Jesper has some serious badass genes.)

Actually, talking about the tidemakers on parem, Jesper, with no training and having all the blood in his body sucked out of him, still managed to kill them with dust. A rather dark trick, but one we've never seen David Kostyk, or Leoni Hilli, considered the two most powerful Fabrikators alive during canon, replicate.

But the real reason Jesper is so powerful has very little to do with that, so much as HOW he does it. Every grisha alive used their arms to direct their abilities. After being captured by the Darkling in S&S, Alina has her hands bound, and says something about how she can summon, but not direct light without her hands, so she's basically powerless. It's obviously a common tactic, because the Druskelle do the same thing with Nina and the other Grisha they captured, and only after they get their hands freed on the sharp edge of a broken cup can they use their abilities again.

The only people we see not using their hands for the small science, in fact, are Adrik, who has to relearn his technique after he loses an arm, and, of course, Jesper Fahey, who can direct bullets with his mind - no hand movements required.

If anything, it's probably this ability that makes him so good at directing bullets. After all, at the speed a bullet is going, you don't have time to be waving your hands around to control it. What's especially funny to me is that before Wylan pointed it out, he had no idea he was even doing it. He was using an ability no other Grisha can, and Didn't Know. Can you imagine him mentioning that to Nina... or basically any Second Army Grisha.

("You can control bullets?"

"...you can't?"

"...how?"

"I'm not sure. I mean, my mother sort of taught me, but also I didn't really realise I was doing it until my boyfriend pointed it out, you know?"

"...YOU WERE ACCIDENTLY CONTROLLING BULLETS?!!!")

This is, of course, all book canon, but somehow the show takes it even further. It hasn't been officially revealed Jesper's Grisha in the show, but there are enough clues - Jesper repairing Kaz's cane, Ivan's cut-off comment after their fight, not to mention the fight itself - that I'm taking it as canon. In this, it is accepted NO ONE can use their grisha abilities, except merzost, without first touching their hands together. Not The Darkling, not Alina, no one. Except, of course, Jesper Fahey, who can shoot his bullets and direct them to the exact same point on a kefta, after deflecting them off random objects first.

Tl;dr: Jesper Fahey is amazing and crazily powerful and should be appreciated.

Okay so I know everyone's worried about the alleged bad season 2 reviews and concerned that it'll be horrible but honestly? Watching the trailer? I'm so excited. I loved siege and storm (mainly for Nikolai haha) and although we can already tell that there are massive changes, I'm excited to see what they are. And the sets and CGI and production of the whole thing looked so cool you can tell so much effort was put into the show, and we have a fantastic cast who I trust to put their heart and soul into their roles- so yeah! I'm excited. In one month we get a high quality well acted author endorsed crossover fanfiction between all my favorite characters- and I can't fudging wait. I already read siege and storm multiple times- heck yea give me a new storyline and new interactions I will eat that stuff up.

Also the show has Wesper so it could literally be the worst steaming garbage ever but give me .4 seconds of ✨sexual tension✨ and gay pining between Jesper and wylan and I will endorse this show til my dying day. I just love my boys so much

Chapter 45: Kaz

The deal is the deal

Unfortunately everyone is a bloody liar

Why had he believed Van Eck had the blessing of the Merchant Council? Because he was a rich, upstanding mercher? Because he’d dressed his own servants and soldiers in the purple uniforms of the stadwatch? Kaz had met with Van Eck in a quarantined mercher’s house, not a government building, but he’d been taken in by a little set dressing. It was Hertzoon and his coffeehouse all over again, only now Kaz was old enough to know better.

Ouch

“Chaos will come, and I will be its master. Its very wealthy master.”

Could’ve been a banger of a line if it wasn’t from Van Eck

The little freak

Oh look we finally get to learn just how horrible a father he is

Van Eck began to laugh – a warm, almost jovial chuckle, but its edges were jagged and bitter.

“Let me tell you about my son.” He spat the word as if it were poison on his lips. “He was meant to be heir to one of the greatest fortunes in all of Kerch, an empire with shipping lines that reach all over the globe, one built by my father, and my father’s father. But my son, the boy meant to rule this grand empire, cannot do what a child of seven years can. He can solve an equation. He can paint and play the flute most prettily. What my son cannot do, Mister Brekker, is read. He cannot write. I have hired the best tutors from every corner of the world. I’ve tried specialists, tonics, beatings, hypnotism. But he refused to be taught. I finally had to accept that Ghezen saw fit to curse me with a moron for a child. Wylan is a boy who will never grow to be a man. He is a disgrace to my house.”

“The letters …” said Jesper, and Kaz could see the anger in his face. “You weren’t pleading with him to come back. You were mocking him.”

I volunteer to punch Jan Van Eck in the face!!

After Jesper and Wylan get the first swings in of course

Leverage number one doesn’t work out quite like Kaz had imagined

But of course he has a backup plan

If you’re reading this, then you know how much I wish to have you home. Every letter had been a slap in the face to Wylan, a kind of cruel joke.

“He’s your son,” Jesper said.

“No, he is a mistake. One soon to be corrected.”

So so cruel

Doesn’t he have any love inside of him?

“You’re the fool,” Jesper snarled. “He’s smarter than most of us put together, and he deserves a better father than you.”

YEAH YOU TELL HIM JESPER!!

The Tidemakers didn’t hesitate. Before anyone could draw breath to protest, two huge walls of water rose and shot towards the Ferolind. They crushed the ship between them with a resonant boom, sending debris flying.

Jesper screamed in rage and raised his guns.

“Jesper!” Kaz commanded. “Stand down!”

“He killed them,” Jesper said, face contorted. “He killed Wylan and Nina!”

Poor Jesper…

This scene will be so intense in the spin-off

Jesper looked back at the rocking waves, at the broken bits of mast and torn sail where a ship had been only seconds before. “I don’t … I don’t understand.”

“I confess to being a bit shocked, too, Mister Brekker,” said Van Eck. “No tears? No righteous protests for your lost crew? They raise you cold in the Barrel.”

“Cold and cautious,” said Kaz.

Even more cautious than you realize

I can’t remember my initial reaction to this part exactly but I’m pretty sure I figured Kaz would have tricks up his sleeve

Like there was no way Nina and “Wylan” were killed off after everything and with only a chapter to go

Plus I knew there was a second book

“I don’t need to take him from you. You never had him. That’s not Kuwei Yul-Bo.”

“A sorry bluff at best.”

“I’m not big on bluffing, am I, Inej?”

“Not as a rule.”

Van Eck’s lip curled. “And why is that?”

“Because he’d rather cheat,” said the boy who was not Kuwei Yul-Bo in perfect, unaccented Kerch.

Van Eck startled at the sound of his voice, and Jesper flinched.

The Shu boy held out a hand. “Pay up, Kaz.”

Kaz sighed. “I do hate to lose a wager. You see, Van Eck, Wylan bet me that you would have no qualms about ending his life. Call me sentimental, but I didn’t believe a father could be so callous.”

Please I forget they literally bet on this 😂😭😭

Also the fact that Kaz asked Inej and the fact that she knows he actually is big on bluffing

He trusts her so much!

She knows all his secrets

And she’ll never betray him

I mean he uses this trick at least three times in this series

Bluffing/lying/cheating to scare someone is Kaz’s favorite tactic

Oh… oh but this makes Jesper flinching at the reveal super painful

Kaz trusted Inej to know about Wylan and Kuwei swapping places, but he didn’t trust Jesper….

He probably did it to get a genuine reaction from Jesper as well but the trust issue thing is definitely there too

Kaz could see the fear and hurt in his golden eyes – Wylan’s surprising courage, too.

After the battle in the Djerholm harbour, the merchling had come to Kaz to warn him that he couldn’t be used as leverage against his father. Wylan had been red-faced, barely able to speak the words of his supposed ‘affliction’. Kaz had only shrugged. Some men were poets. Some were farmers. Some were rich merchers. Wylan could draw a perfect elevation. He’d made a drill that could cut through Grisha glass from parts of a gate and scavenged bits of jewellery. So what if he couldn’t read?”

It’s been said before but I’ll say it again

It’s really beautiful how Kaz doesn’t judge others on their flaws

“There could be no judgment from a boy known as Dirtyhands” -chapter 20

He looks for the best part of every individual and makes that part of them shine

Or he finds some way for them to be useful at least

Kaz shrugged. “Kill us, and you’ll never find Kuwei.”

Van Eck appeared to consider this. Then he stepped back. “Guards to me!” he shouted. “Kill everyone but Brekker!”

Kaz knew the instant he made his mistake. They’d all known it might come to this. He should have trusted his crew. His eyes should have stayed trained on Van Eck. Instead, in that moment of threat, when he should have thought only of the fight, he looked at Inej.

This line oh my gosh—

KaNej—

And Van Eck saw it. He blew on his whistle. “Leave the others! Get the money and the girl.”

Do you hear that?

No?

Well it’s me screaming

He tries to run to protect her!!

Please I am SOBBING 😭

“The Tidemakers reached her first, vanishing into mist, then reappearing at her side. But only a fool would to try to take Inej in close combat. The Tidemakers were fast – vanishing and reappearing, grabbing at her. But she was the Wraith, and her knives found heart, throat, spleen. Blood spilled over the sand as the Tidemakers collapsed in two very solid heaps.

She’s so cool

Oh my gosh

they had to face the sun to shoot and not even Jesper could aim blind.

Hmm.. this is interesting

I don’t think the show follows this statement

Jesper has literally shot without looking several times

The Squaller barrelled into Inej and sped upwards with her into the sky.

Stay still, Kaz urged her silently, his pistol drawn.

Something about Kaz with a gun just make me so…

So…. Hnnnnnnngh

It’s hot, okay?

AND THEN SHE’S FALLING

AND HE TRIES TO RUN TO HER AGAIN!!

Ashjfssfhjvsadh—

A third Squaller swooped down, snatching her up seconds before impact and dealing her a vicious blow to the skull. Kaz saw Inej’s body go limp.

“Bring him down!” roared Matthias.

“No!” shouted Kaz. “Shoot him and she falls, too!”

He can’t watch her fall…

It terrifies him

…. “Why the net, Kaz?”

Some hints for later I see??

But now she’s gone-

There was nothing they could do but stand there like fools and watch her shape get smaller in the sky – a distant moon, a fading star, then gone.

There and then gone…

Just like the magic trick

Just like Jordie..

But he can get her back!

Vengeance for Jordie, all Kaz had worked for, was slipping away. He didn’t care…

…“Kaz, I can make the shot,” said Jesper, rifle to his shoulder. “Van Eck is still in range.”

And all would be lost – Inej, the money, everything.

“No,” Kaz said. “Let them go.”

Inej is his first thought

He values her more than his revenge

He felt as he had looking into the darkened windows of the house on Zelverstraat. Helpless once more. He’d prayed to the wrong god.

It hurts 😭

Kaz marvelled at his own stupidity. Dumber than a pigeon fresh off the boat and looking to make a fortune on East Stave. His greatest vulnerability had been right beside him. And now she was gone.

Poor Kaz

He’s so hard on himself

Love isn’t a weakness!!

The idea of “there and then gone” keeps coming up though and I love and hate it!

“That’s why you disappeared during the journey,” said Jesper. “You weren’t helping Matthias care for Nina. You were hiding.”

“I didn’t hide.”

“You … how many times was it you standing beside me on the deck at night when I thought it was Kuwei?”

“Every time.”

“Nina might not be able to put you back, you know. Not without another dose of parem. You could be stuck like this.”

“Why does it matter?”

“I don’t know!” Jesper said angrily. “Maybe I liked your stupid face.”

See I told you it was Wylan

I say this like I haven’t read these books like five times already

I’m actually here for angry Jesper??

I want more strong emotions from him in the show

He turned to Matthias. “You knew. Wylan knew. Inej knew. Everyone but me.”

“Ask me why, Jesper,” Kaz said, his patience at an end.

Here comes pain

It hurts because it was an accident

Jesper would never willfully betray the other crows

This echos the opening scene of the book with Big Bolliger a little

Just this time the betrayal wasn’t on purpose

“You told one of the Dime Lions you were leaving Kerch, but that you’d be coming into big money, didn’t you?”

Jesper swallowed. “I had to. They were leaning on me hard. My father’s farm—”

“I told you not to tell anyone you were leaving the country. I warned you to keep your mouth shut.”

“I didn’t have a choice! You had me locked up in the Crow Club before we left. If you’d let me—”

Kaz turned on him. “Let you what? Play a few hands of Three Man Bramble? Dig yourself deeper in with every boss in the Barrel stupid enough to extend you credit? You told a member of Pekka’s gang you were about to be flush.”

“I didn’t know he’d go to Pekka. Or that Pekka knew about parem. I was just trying to buy myself some time.”

“Saints, Jesper, you really haven’t learned anything in the Dregs, have you? You’re still the same dumb farm boy who stepped off the boat.”

Is he talking about Jesper here or himself…

Hmmmmmmmm…?

“Kaz would always remember that moment, when he’d seen greed take hold of his brother, an invisible hand guiding him onward, the lever at work.”

Remember that quote from chapter 18?

Yeah.

Kaz is definitely thinking about Jordie when he looks at Jesper and his gambling problem

Jesper lunged for him, and Kaz felt a surge of giddy violence. Finally, a fight he could win. But Matthias stepped between them, holding them each back with a massive hand. “Stop. Stop this.”Kaz didn’t want to stop. He wanted to beat them all bloody and then brawl his way through the Barrel.

This man does have a tendency to get into fights a lot

He’s always coming back bloody during their heists and schemes

Anyways-

They’re so brothers

Kaz wants to see Jesper as his big brother but he keeps letting him down…

Just like Jordie did—

For now, there was nothing but the flat grey of the sky and the dead rock of this miserable excuse for an island. And Inej’s absence. Kaz wanted to hit someone. He wanted someone to hit him.

I’m sure Jesper would happily deck you if you let him

If Kaz was their leader, then Inej had been their lodestone, pulling them together when they seemed most likely to drift apart.

Inej holds them all together!!

According to that deleted scene we got today she’s their heart!! 💕

Nina had disguised Kaz’s crow-and-cup tattoo before they’d entered the Ice Court, but he hadn’t let her near the R on his bicep. Now he touched his gloved fingers to where the sleeve of his coat covered that mark. Without meaning to, he’d let Kaz Rietveld return.

He didn’t know if it had begun with Inej’s injury or that hideous ride in the prison wagon, but somehow he’d let it happen and it had cost him dearly.

I think he started coming back even sooner than that…

I want him to let Rietveld free but at least he’s making a plan

Also give us Kaz’s tattoos netflix!!!!

“Scheming face,” murmured Jesper.

“Definitely,” agreed Wylan.

Matthias folded his arms. “Digging in your bag of tricks, demjin?”

I love it

Kaz wants to go after Inej alone!

But he knows he’ll need help

“I’ll need the right crew.”

“Wylan got to his feet. “For the Wraith.”

Jesper followed, still not meeting Kaz’s eyes. “For Inej,” he said quietly.

Matthias gave a single sharp nod.

They all love Inej so much 🥹

Inej had wanted Kaz to become someone else, a better person, a gentler thief. But that boy had no place here. That boy ended up starving in an alley. He ended up dead. That boy couldn’t get her back.

No!

He can survive now!!

He has friends! A family!!!

Though… I guess he does need Dirtyhands Brekker for what comes next..

I’m going to get my money, Kaz vowed. And I’m going to get my girl.

YEAH YOU ARE

THAT’S MY MAN!!!

Inej could never be his, not really, but he would find a way to give her the freedom he’d promised her so long ago.

Freedom Heist

SoC Post-CK Fanfic

I actually don't really remember where the idea or inspiration for this fic came from. I think I found out about whump and I was like "huh interesting interesting". I also liked the idea of expanding the slave trade in the Grishaverse beyond what we had seen from Inej's past and anything we thought we might see from her in the future. I wanted the biggest of bad and I wanted this grand epic adventure that was still a heist and still the crows. I also decided Matthias is still alive because what do fanfic writers get to do in their fics? Make the rules, yes that's right. More info below!

Kaz Brekker for once feels two steps behind his new opponent. But they were the Crows. They protected their own, and did anything to do it, even if it includes giving up parts of themselves along the way.

Constantly- Jesper Fahey x gn! reader

Okay! This is a rare fic of mine that sort of follows post-ck canon and I think it’s a pretty good foothold for the Spring Break Fic-Athon. A lot of my fics will have hurt/comfort and then fluffy undertones and with this event, general feelings of contentment accidentally became a running theme lol.

Fic type- this is mostly fluff! I love domesticity and my love for it is definitely communicated through this fic lol

You grinned as you woke, finding yourself in the Henley that Jesper had worn the day before. You paused, waiting to either hear the sound of Jespers voice as he hummed or the sound of rain pelleting against your window.

It was much to your delight that you heard both, the rain gently smattering against the window in typical Ketterdam fashion combined with Jesper as he spoke, the words having been ones that you couldn’t quite make out.

You got up, pulling on a thin flannel that you’d purchased on a vacation to Novyi Zem in the years before, pulling on a different pair of sweatpants to the ones you’d gone to bed in for a bit more warmth without having to touch the heater.

You proceeded down the steps of the home you’d bought in the Financial District, headed to the left and found yourself standing in the kitchen, silently watching Jesper and Colm as they talked.

“Yeah, it’s been great,” Jesper said. “Married life, I mean. I could get used to this. I think I already have.”

“Marriage isn’t for everyone, but everyone who it’s for finds it incredible,” Colm said with a smile. “Coffee on Saturdays, lazing about on Sundays. Knowing that you’re with someone who you love, someone who your heart never wants to let go of, it’s one of the best feelings out there, Jesper.”

You proceeded in, wrapped your arms around Jespers shoulders for a moment, grinning as he pressed a kiss to your cheek.

“Morning, love,” he said.

“Hey,” you responded, grabbing a mug and feeling grateful that hot coffee had already been brewing on the pot. “Sorry I slept in.”

“Wanted to surprise you with breakfast, so you’re fine,” Jesper said. “Da popped in for a visit. He’s staying at the Geldrenner this week. Told me he’s looking to close on a farm in the countryside, though he won’t tell with whom it is he’s making a deal.”

You shot Colm a knowing look. “Kaz Brekker?”

Colm laughed incredulously. “How the fuck did you know?”

You shrugged as you poured the coffee into your mug, topped off Colms. “You’re not the kind of guy who appreciates the criminal deal, but you don’t see Kaz as a criminal,” you said.

“You, in spite of everything you witnessed back in the days of the Ice Court, think of him as a semi-legitimate businessman. Kaz probably found out when he overheard Jesper and I talking, or Inej heard and told him, that you were looking to buy a piece of farmland either with a house attached or one cheap enough that you could build one on the acreage. He’s definitely bought off a decently priced piece of land and has probably offered it to you at a rate that you can afford, or that Jesper and I can afford should you not be able to. Kaz is exactly what Matthias used to compare him to. A demon.”

Colm laughed again. “You compare your own friend to a demon?”

“He is one,” you laughed. “He’s a demon who cares very begrudgingly, but he cares even still. Why do you want a piece of farmland in Ketterdam, anyway?”

“I was gonna buy it for you folks, as a wedding gift,” Colm said. “I am going to. I know it’s been three weeks since you got married, but you and Jesper talked about living off of the money you’d make from farming in the Geldrenner during the Ice Court days. Don’t know if it’s still your dream, but there ain’t no house on that property and I’m sure Kaz wouldn’t hate you if you sold it back to him.”

Jesper met your gaze as you took a sip of coffee. “Still your dream, love?”

You laughed. “Of course. Still yours?”

Jesper nodded. “I’d go anywhere with you. Yeah.”

“Well, building a house will take two years, at minimum. Are you sure you can handle that?” Colm asked. “Do you have the finances?”

“We split our Ice Court money to finance this, and Kaz has put us in on a few heists with payouts in the millions in the years since, so I think we’ll manage,” Jesper grinned. “We’ll adopt a few farm cats. Cats make good mousers, and they’re not too difficult to feed.”

You grinned, pressed a kiss to Jespers cheekbone and tried not to let the contentment you felt grow overwhelming.

You and Jesper had long discussed it, the idea of buying a plot of land and living off of it. You could grow wheat, turn that it into flour and sell it to bakeries. You could grow fruits to sell them at the markets. With the right plot of land, you could open a vineyard and have wine, bourbon, and kvas to sell to Kaz so that locally made alcohol filled the bottles that were then poured at the Slat and at the Crow Club. It was an idea that both of you liked, an idea that both of you had agreed to look into after your wedding.

It seemed Colm had beaten you to the idea, though.

“Thanks, Da,” Jesper said. “Thank you so much. We appreciate this endlessly, and we’ll pay you back for it.”

“It’s a wedding gift!” Colm said. “No, you won’t pay me back for a fucking wedding gift, Jesper. I love you, and that’s why I’m doing this. I’m gonna finish my coffee, close a deal, and then have Kaz reach out to you with the location of the acreage I purchased.”

You and Jesper both laughed at Colms insistence. “Thank you,” you said.

Colm shook his head. “You’re family, and if you want to retire in your twenties, like you are now, you feel free. I would’ve if I had the chance.”

You took a sip of your coffee, let yourself feel true happiness. You had the life you wanted after so much time spent chasing it. It felt so good to be able to say that, and damn if you were going to enjoy it.

The farmhouse had taken three years to be move-in ready, but, six years since Colm had bought you the land, as you stood in your own backyard with Nina, sipping water and trying to ignore the feeling of contentment as it built in your heart, you had to agree that it was worth it. Wylan was playing the flute, and you were drinking water outside as Jesper and Kaz talked with Inej and Hanne.

“So, Ketterdam again, hm?” You asked. Nina laughed.

“Missed it too much, and Hanne gets it. We’ll be long distance for a few months, but I--I missed the salt in the air.”

“And you totally didn’t miss a flute playing demo man, or a wraith, or a sharpshooter, or a very intimidating guy with a very terrible haircut, or even a certain person who’s an expert with a crossbow?”

“I missed you guys too,” Nina laughed. “A lot, actually. If I have to hear about one more milestone through a letter I’ll stab someone, I fear. Speaking of milestones, hows the baby?”

The baby who was upstairs, fast asleep. Aditi Inej Fahey, named for Jespers mother and the best friend you’d known since you were seventeen years old.

“She sleeps all the fucking time. It’s insane. Jesper and I think the universe is trying to trick us into having a second kid,” you laughed. “We’ve agreed not to, but on the basis that we might get two babies who sleep all the time, we’ve been tempted.”

“Kaz and Inej dealt with the same thing,” Nina laughed. “Oh, I’m glad they didn’t have another mini-Brekker, but imagine the chaos if they had. Kaz would have taught the kid how to pay their bills before they could talk.”

You laughed, and not long thereafter, Kaz and Jesper joined your conversation where Inej and Hanne went to talk to Wylan.

“I quite like the life we’ve got,” Jesper said. “It’s fucking perfect.”

Kaz nodded his agreement. “When you least expect it, you turn around and suddenly, it feels like life is wonderful.”

You grinned. “So you don’t hate your house in the Financial District, then?”

Kaz shrugged. “It’s close enough to the Slat and the Crow Club. I work from home a lot now, too, so no. I hate it considerably less than I thought I would.”

Jesper laughed. “Yeah. Soon enough, you’ll be buying a plot of land, building a house on it, and moving in. Farming brings in good money, and these houses are perfect for summer. The fields are good for get-togethers and vow-renewals, as has become apparent.”

Kaz shrugged. “I would live on a big plot of land, sure, but I wouldn’t use that for farming. Big machines around can lead to fatal accidents, so I would rather not. Good for a walk, though, maybe a few strawberry bushes.”

“Strawberries are perfect in summer,” you nodded. “Get them onto a stove with some sugar and they make an excellent jam or syrup. Blueberries too.”

“Inej has tricked me into eating homemade jam. Pretty good stuff, honestly.”

The conversation continued, and one by one, your friends left. First, it’d been Inej and Kaz, gone home to make sure that the Slat didn’t devolve into chaos and to see that Colm wasn’t too tired after he’d offered to babysit. Then it was Wylan, leaving with hugs and promises to meet up for breakfast in the following weeks. Nina and Hanne left last, exiting with kisses pressed to cheeks and tellings of excitement for Ninas return to Ketterdam.

Just like that, you and Jesper were alone in your house again, folding laundry and humming and mentioning bringing the flour that you’d gotten from the wheat and the kvas that you’d gotten from it, into the city. It was summer, and you would return to the city once more with the start of autumn. Seeing Kaz and Inej would grow frequent as you once again became bigger players and got decent paychecks from more than just the farming.

You would laugh at Jespers jokes and have dinners with him, Inej, and Kaz. You would bond over how it’d begun to feel as though time was flying by, how it’d felt like that for the better part of a decade.

But, in that moment, as Jesper offered you his hand and you took it, as you danced in the light of the candle you’d lit on your coffee table, you found that you were so excited for life to keep on going, because it kept on going with Jesper. It kept on going with your friends, the people who made life worth it, the ones who’d mattered to you then and would always matter.

Jesper pressed his forehead against yours. “I will love you until I am rendered incapable of doing so,” Jesper whispered. “I love you constantly.”

You grinned as Jespers arms wrapped around your waist, as yours rested on his shoulders, and your lips met, your response being communicated in just that kiss.

Jesper loved you constantly, and in return, you loved him the same. You always would.

Summary: How do you treat injuries on a man who won't let you touch him? Who recoils in fear at the slightest brush of someone else against him? That was exactly the kind of problem Jesper was faced with when he found Kaz, injured, bleeding and fully in the clutches of a panic attack, up in his chambers above the Crow Club.

Kaz is injured and Jesper must find a way to treat his injuries.

I like that we're getting to hear her letters to Mal in voice over because it returns some of the interiority we've lost through the translation from 1st person narrative to screen

This is the SECOND time I've noticed Jesper randomly helping himself to food/drink from other people's tables/houses and I fucking love it (he also did it in Dreesen’s basement)

The way his gaze lingers and he stays turned toward the window for a solid few seconds after she's gone-!!!

He tries to stop himself, he really does!!!

Can we just appreciate in general the nuanced and compassionate, yet realistic way addiction is portrayed with Jesper's character???

(Not to mention the fact we see TWO portrayals of addiction in this series--psychological addiction with Jesper and physical addiction with Nina)

Like, it's not a comic relief bit--it legitimately has life-altering consequences for both Jesper, all his loved ones, and those he works with.

We see Jesper both deny to himself and others he has a Problem, yet also struggle against it

["Why didn't you just stop?" Jesper wanted to laugh. He had pleaded with himself, screamed at himself to stop.]

He fucks up and hurts people he (and we the readers) love because of it. Yet the narrative remains continuous in its portrayal of Jesper as someone with steadfastly good intentions and a good heart who is struggling with unhealed issues

["There's a wound in you, and the tables, the dice, the cards--they feel like medicine. They soothe you, for a time. But they're poison, Jesper."]

Listen, I just have a lot of Feelings about Jesper Fahey

But its interesting seeing this understanding where it’s coming from re: Zoya’s heritage.

Zoya's got so much internalized racism and fear around being mixed race herself because of her upbringing, seeing how not only just her father was treated but Suli in general

She's lashing out because she's afraid and conflicted

And she's also feeling jealous and uncertain about her place being favored by the Darkling (which he has fostered because he's a manipulator of the worst kind)

Kaz carrying Milo the goat and looking absolutely Done will never not be funny to me

More show-added worldbuilding appreciation from me

The posters styled after Bolshevik revolution/soviet propaganda posters is such a wonderful touch by the props/set folks

And again, the invented script for written Ravkan (and all the languages, but we’ve mostly just seen Ravkan and Kerch written so far) makes my linguist nerd heart sing

Kaz: initiate mastermind scanners for useful information and/or potential blackmail

Kaz: BEEP BEEP impending betrayal detected

Kaz: initiate 5-D chess-level planning consisting of labyrinthine layers upon layers of traps, feints, and manipulation

I love that they gave her a physical object for Inej related to her family.

In the books (again, because of interiority) we get literal flashbacks of them, as well as many phrases from her parents she repeats or hears internally ("The heart is an arrow...", "Climb, Inej")

But that’s not easily translated to a visual medium. So instead we get this great little physical/visual token of that.

It does such heavy lifting not only in that it shows us how deeply Inej's faith directs her morals (like how torn she was when Arken connected over their faith), but also shows how much she still holds the memory/hope of her family close to her; that she's never accepted that her life in Ketterdam was just it now.

Good, good storytelling work

ARE YOU TALKING TO HER OR TO YOURSELF, KAZ??????

That little glance down and then away-!!!

And then immediately he's harsh and cruel about it to try and push her away from him--to push hIMSELF away from her!!!

Fucking helllll

I'm so glad they basically got to keep Nina's and Matthias' story the same (aside from minor details obv) down to exact lines

Danielle Galligan and Calahan Skogman breathe such life into the cores of these characters and all their nuances

[Matthias had always fought his own decency. To become a drüskelle, he’d had to kill the good things inside him.]

All through this episode, even in this first scene, you can see Nina's words start to scratch away at him

He's gonna have her in his head for the rest of the night

LOVE THE WHOLE CONCEPT!

Love this addition to the world, love how it's not finished/is kinda ramshackle with sliding between the two tracks, love the weird systems set up he's developed to cross multiple times with the sound of hitting the metal, love it all

I'm so happy Nadia is a black woman!!!

We get so many queer characters of color! I can't wait until we get Tamar (and Tolya ofc) introduced in the show so we can have the badass wlw couple we deserve

BOTKIN!! So glad he makes an appearance!!

I could so easily him being cut from another version of an adaption so this makes me so happy

Part of what endeared Botkin to me in the book was how, even though he is a harsh teacher, he always treated Alina like every other student and demanded her best work

Like "idc you're the sun summoner, your right hook is pathetic!"

ALINA KNOWING HOW TO THROW A PROPER PUNCH BC MAL TAUGHT HER IS 🙏🙏🙏

Like I know this is supposed to establish character dynamics and how Zoya has this social position she's defending and how Alina is gaining credibility

But me & my gay-ass brain just went like "Ok but I would let Zoya punch me in the face and I would say THANK YOU"

And we here see in Alina's face the echoed experiences of women, femmes, and assumed-women everywhere having forced unwanted interactions with creepy dudes

Another character I can’t wait to see interact with Nikolai on screen because their relationship is hilarious to me

I've mentioned it before, but the show more heavily leaning into the idea that Grisha power can sort of be drawn out or kicked on by sudden pain and/or fear is such an interesting one

Because it implies about the nature of Grisha power that it developed similar to other unconscious survival mechanisms--like adrenaline numbs out bad injuries or allows muscles to surpass normal limits, its something that helps keep Grisha stay alive in a life or death situation

The worldbuilding always contains all these tiny details that realistically reflect how humans build clever systems over time to address issues and get what/where they want to

I'M FUCKIN EMOTIONAL BC I just noticed when Arken says the situation is dire, please take note of how Kaz isn't even looking at him, he's staring diRECTLY AT INEJ sitting across from him?????

[That sound--the swift, shocking report of gunfire--called the scattered, irascible, permanently seeking part of his mind into focus like nothing else.]

[...Jesper could feel himself coming alive, the worry that had been dogging his steps ... falling away. He felt free, dangerous, like lightning rolling over the prairie.]

[He'd knew his guns better than he knew the rules of Makker's Wheel. Jesper focused on the bullet, sensed the smallest parts of it. Maybe he was the same. A bullet in a chamber, spending his whole life waiting for the moment he would have direction.]

So I just want to examine the Crows' "we were pretty sure we were going to die but we actually pulled through and are somehow still alive???" reactions for a minute:

1) Inej, ofc, her first reaction is prayer which makes me emotional

And then, she looks over at Kaz because she wants to see if this finally shook something loose from that cold exterior (because tbh, at this point, it's probably the first time she's ever witnessed Kaz escape death first-hand)

2) How fucking beautiful Jesper looks?? 😍😍

[Jesper's hair was mussed, his pupils dilated. He seemed almost drunk, or like he’d just rolled out of someone’s bed. He always had that look after a fight.]

3) And Kaz, of course as always, is looking at Inej (and then looking away from it all)

It's gonna get you in big trouble one day, Kaz

AND how Inej and Kaz hold eye contact for a moment before they both look away???

And I feel Malina in this chili's tonight

Oh! Something I forgot to add I noticed during the train fight scene, Arken has these depictions of saints hung up on the walls!!!!

Again, major major ups to the prop/set people for adding all these small details!! It makes the world feel so full and lived in!

So that's the end of episode 3!

Six of Crows Characters as DnD Characters: now complete with backgrounds!

Tired, on my sleep meds me better fucking appreciate that I can remember the idea I had

We'll go from easiest to hardest to parse (as if any of them were hard to figure out. They're fantasy characters, they were all but made to be categorized this way lol /hj)*

Kaz Brekker: A Mastermind Rogue with the Urchin Background Do I really need to elaborate? He is the large rat that makes all of the rules... He makes the plans; he's hard to get a jump on; he can sleight of hand like nobody's business. When his allies are near and acting as distractions, he can deal epic sneak attack damage. He's quiet on his feet. CRIME

Jesper Fahey**: Gunsliger Fighter with the Gambler Background Again, fairly self-explanatory. He has guns, but he's not really a crafter of guns***. There is an argument for a different background****; I am not going to entertain it here. Gambler, though his background is still a vital part of his character*****; It's more so than any education or criminal activity he's done.

Matthais Helver+: Beast Master Ranger that multiclasses into an Oathbreaker Paladin with the Zealot Background Arguably the worst class for my (second) least favorite character (of the ones covered in this post, though I'll happily do one of these for the villians/antagonists)++. Starts as a Beast Master Ranger, because of his wolf. Though he very quickly multiclasses into Paladin, but by the time he gets a subclass in that class he has to take Oathbreaker+++. Zealot is self-explainitory, the only other Background I would entertain is if there was an Occultist one (which there probably is, but Zealot is still the more apt option).

Inej Ghafa++++: Soulknife Rogue with the Entertainer Background (her routine specifically being Acrobat, which I don't see as an option, but I'm making an option right now) I can see the argument for Monk or Paladin+++++, but it's the stealth that really cements her as a Rogue. And it's the same deal as Kaz when it comes to canon sneak attacks. While Scout or Assassin could work well as her subclass, maybe even be more on track that Soulknife, I have to go with Soulknife. Like Jesper's gambling that just makes the Gambling Background more fitting than any other, Inej's knives are an integral part of her character. They are the only weapons she uses. So why don't we give her infinite knives? As well as, the fact they are psychic can be flavored to fit into the fact that she is a very religious character who links her knives to her religion by naming each one after one of her saints. Finally, the Entertainer Background. Criminal is a cop-out. Outlanders tend to be solo. Pirate can't count because that's the future.

Wylan Van Sunshine /s^: Bard that multiclasses into an Artillerist Artficier^^ with the Noble Background He doesn't take enough levels in Bard to get a subclass. He probably took 2, decided he disliked it, but his DM wouldn't let him just reflavor the whole character so he multiclassed as fast as he fucking could. Artificer, need I say more? Artillerist because, "An Artillerist specializes in using magic to hurl energy, projectiles, and explosions on a battlefield". Bomb. I rest my case. He was a "noble" like 3 months ago or so, though it should definitely be flavored as like a disgraced noble or something. Homebrew I guess. It took me a while to get here, but once the ball got rolling there was no stopping it. His character just fell into perfect place.

Kuwei Yul-Bo: Pyromancy Sorcerer with the Inheritor Background Again, a class I dislike for a character I dislike. He was very boring to me, very useless despite being at the heart of both books' plots. I literally forgot about him for the majority of Crooked Kingdom. He reminds me of a pc from the last campaign I dmed for a specific group. The player was barely there, and when he was, refused to do anything. I'm not a fan of magic classes if you can tell, but the only thing I truly remember about Kuwei is some inherent link to fire. Thus the idea for Kuwei the Pyromancy Sorcerer was born. He's a Sorcerer and has the Inheritor background for the same reason: his father. He became valuable when he inherited his father's work.

Last but not least, Nina Zenik: A Way of Mercy Monk who multiclasses into an Order of the Ghostslayer Blood Hunter with the Cloistered Scholar Background Originally she was only going to be a Blood Hunter, but then I remembered a character of mine who's a Way of Mercy Monk and how they get this dual ability to both heal and harm. This felt very apt for Nina as a Heartrender, and how she uses her abilities throughout, particularly book one. She multiclasses at the end of that book specifically lol. While I am a diehard fan of the Order of the Lycan and just the absolute range of horror that can come from it, Order of the Ghostslayer is much much more accurate to Nina's abilities. Her abilities after parem are still her old ones, just mutated and screwy. Which, what is a Blood Hunter if not someone whose abilities have become warped and fucked up? Blood Hunters in general are very akin to Heartrenders in my opinion as both can take a physical toll on the user. As well as both deal heavily with the body and utilizing/fucking with its various parts. Ghostslayers are the oldest, historically, order of Blood Hunters, which in combination with the previous sentence makes it perfect for Nina as she has her roots in a very old type of magic. Ghostslayers also focus on fighting the undead, which is another link to her new abilities as Blood Hunters are deeply connected to that which they hunt, so her being able to utilize the dead but them also being her sworn enemy is fitting. Finally, she gets her background from the fact that she was raised, secluded away, in the Little Palace, effectively just studying her craft.

I'm glad to see I got more in-depth, therefore unhinged, as this went on.

Everyone infantilizing him or disregarding his sarcasm and willingness to make literal bombs can fight me in a game of Zombie Dice (I am not strong, me and Wylan are premium members of the Scrawny Club) ^^This is what I meant about his and Jesper's abilities complementing each other. Unlike Kaz and Inej who are cut from the same cloth, or-as you'll learn-Nina and Matthais who are effectively 2 sides of the same coin, they really build on each other
