[Image Description: a full-body digital drawing of miles edgeworth from ace attorney. he is lying face down on the ground. on the left, there’s text reading “I’ve fallen for you and I can’t get up. To: [colon] From: [colon]” in comic sans. the background is a solid pink.
the second picture is of a postcard and greeting card of the drawing as redbubble products. they are showed in a frame that resembles the structure of an instagram post with the user lifeonmvrs. it has a title reading "already available :3 [cat face emoticon]" and in smaller text one that reads "link in bio [heart emoticon]”. the third picture is the same but the products this time are a pin and a sticker. /end ID]

Closeups and rambles about the designs under the cut, you know the deal
Tumblr media
I stared at Feenie’s pitiful puppy eyes sprite for like a half hour for this, I just wanted you guys to know that. I couldn’t decide on whether I wanted to draw her bleeding or include the necklace because logically they can’t be there at the same time but I did it anyway because I wanted to. Also I wanted her to be splattered with paint where in later iterations she’d have scars.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sunflower/defense attorney badge inspired earring, and bleeding heart necklace. I didn’t feel like going easy on the symbolism on this one lol.
Tumblr media
Closeup of Rookie!Phoenixes gay little earring, I love putting too much detail into things that end up being way too small to appreciate. Obviously it’s an Edgeworth reference, and a reference to that one DD concept art where he has a little blue knight on his tie and I thought this is her era of getting really into being a knight in shining armor for everyone ever.
All the earrings/jewelry correspond to the people she’s closest to at the time, or at least most devoted to. Feenie: Mia and Dahlia, Rookie: Edgeworth (the sketch had the chess piece replaced with a large bead which is for Maya/Pearls), Beanix: Trucy, and MILFeen: the WAA (the star in the celestial trio alongside Athena’s moon and Apollo’s Sun)
Another note about the main trilogy Fem!Phoenix design is that I included temporary marks from Franziska’s whip rather than the burn scars from the bridge which are included in the later versions. Also the scars from being bashed in the head bc i felt like that wouldn’t just disappear, and I wanted to focus this design on JFA.
More about the scars, specifically her lip scars, I wanted to give her a darker lipstick that she uses to draw away the attention from the necklace chomping scars but during the 7yg she kind of gives up on hiding them. I also wanted to make sure there’s a dramatic change between Beanix and MILFeen, Edgeworth bullied her into having a decent skincare routine.
Tumblr media
Speaking of Edgeworth, she’s here, having homosexual feelings in the background. As usual. The fun thing about Narumisu is that they almost exclusively refer to each other by their last names so it doesn’t matter if they have different first names for a gender swap, they will always be ‘Prosecutor Edgeworth’ and ‘Defense Attorney Wright’
Tumblr media
All side by side at the sacrifice of image quality. I love her eras

Alright, I have a feeling that anything I say about Dual Destinies will have already been said at least five times over, but I figured I might as well write it down anyway. I think the easiest way to sort this is thing is with a pros and cons list, so here we go (post-game debriefing under the cut - contains spoilers, obvi):
Pros:
The animation is good! The 3D models and the cutscenes might be off sometimes, but the animation is fun to watch. I still prefer Era Two (AA4/AAI/RFtA) in this aspect because they had to put a lot of effort and emotion into those sprites without the benefit of cutscenes to help with the narrative (Klavier's 2D sprites have all of my respect), but Dual Destinies changing up the formula worked in their favor.
The characters introduced in Dual Destinies have GREAT models and unique sprite animations. I had so much fun watching Athena and Blackquill react to each other in court - in personality, these two are total opposites, and their sprites reflect just that. Juniper’s sprites were sweet and vulnerable, Fullbright's were over-dramatic and theatric, and Aura's were determined and forceful. Hell, even Aristotle Means had a great range of animations and personalities through them (even if his design was a bit off). They had more time to animate with stable rigs rather than hand-drawing each frame, and it shows with each of these characters.
Athena and Apollo’s reactions to their traumas were well done. In a game series where most characters' reactions have to be inferred through dialogue and pre-set sprites, the closest we got to this before (on-screen) was Klavier in 4-4 - but this is never mentioned again by the games or other characters. This game forces you to see the effect - Athena shutting down in court and the team supporting her, and Apollo repressing his emotions until they come to a head with his leave of absence. It was good! I was really invested in their characters and excited to see where the game took them! Which, um, we’ll discuss later.
AURA BLACKQUILL!! There’s always one character that steals the show and this time around that honor went to Aura. The last case rode on this woman’s back and I will not allow any slander against her. The woman she loved was murdered, her brother was thrown in jail for it, and goddamn it, she wants justice and will get it any way possible. They try to make her a parallel to Apollo, but her and Metis’s tragedy steals the show from Apollo/Clays (which was easy to do, to be fair, but my god did she hit it out of the park). Did I mention CANONICAL WLW?? What a lady!
Watching Phoenix and Edgeworth go head to head in court again was fun. Good for them! Good for them.
Cons:
Previously introduced characters (such as Apollo, Phoenix, Edgeworth, Klavier, etc…) had REALLY bad sprites and/or sprite animations. It’s hard, if not impossible, to recapture the charm of previously 2D assets in 3D, no matter who you are. What I think happened here was that the animators had room for error on the new models - if an animation didn’t look right, they could change the way the model moved, but with formerly 2D sprites the animators didn't have that luxury because their audience already knew how the animations were supposed to look. I think a good example of this is Apollo’s courtroom sprites (generally awkward) vs. his forward-facing and co-counsel sprites (generally good), which we’d never seen before.
You know how I said I liked how Apollo and Athena’s traumas were handled? I lied a little bit. I like how they reacted to their traumas. I didn’t like how the game resolved their traumas, or more accurately: how it refused to resolve their traumas. Athena didn’t get that final trial where she faced her fears head-on - Phoenix got that final face-off against her brother-figure and mother's killer. Apollo didn’t learn anything from his stint on his own or his (rightful, IMO) mistrust of Athena. Circumstances have changed, but our main characters' net growth has remained constant from the beginning to the end of Dual Destinies.
Phoenix Wright. I’m sorry! But Phoenix Wright as one of three (3!!!) protagonists was a horrible decision for DD. Phoenix was shoe-horned into a game named after him and all character development from AA4 washed away with a quick pin on the lapel. Like, what does this man who forged evidence and bent the law system by sheer force of will, doing all of this at the risk of a young lawyer’s career, think he’s doing acting like the rookie he was ten years ago in court? Yes, there is some development in his POV - he seems more mature/fatherly but it seems ingenuine considering he just pulled a Yanni Yogi for seven years. Phoenix once again taking on the role of the plucky protagonist falls short when we think about his court appearance in 4-1, a formidable opponent and awe-inspiring mentor even in sweats and sandals. Dual Destinies!Phoenix falls short of that, because playing as a competent turnabout terror just wouldn't be as fun, and ruins some good character development without any plot to back up the decision to make him a playable character.
Apollo and Athena, our REAL protagonists, are fighting for attention the entire game. We’re trying to flesh out Apollo’s character with (a weak) backstory and trauma, but Athena is the one that our plot is hinging on. Dual Destinies could have made a great starter game for Athena's trilogy if Capcom had made it solely from Athena's perspective, but as it is, DD feels disjointed and unproductive until our last case.
Pls tell me I don’t have to explain the racism in the DLC. Long story short:
Tumblr media
Overall I did enjoy Dual Destinies, it was entertaining in its stupid twists and silly cutscenes. Still, looking at the Wikipedia article on DD's reception, it feels like they were celebrating the continuation of a long-beloved series rather than evaluating the merits of the actual game. I know some people hold this game up as one of the best games in the series, and some think it's the worst of the worst. Going in optimistically, I wasn't disappointed but I definitely wasn't satisfied either. Decent game, but if I had to rank each of the AA games this would likely fall near the lower end of the list.

Dear Anonymous,
That’s probably because the maker of Inga’s sprites requested that they keep the link to them a secret.  I doubt we’ll ever use his gun sprites in a letter though, so here are the talking and non-talking ones:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Link in Letter)
Dear Anonymous,
That's an interesting theory, all right, but I doubt it would hold up in court (either in the Ace Attorney universe or the real world).  Either way, from what I remember, it seems to like the game tried to make it clear that he was the culprit behind Manov’s death, completely for the sake of revenge.  Even if he didn’t, the guy clearly has some anger to work out, so hopefully a prison sentence will do him some good.  That’s my less-hot take, anyway.
Tumblr media
Dear Anonymous,
Clever, but I doubt puppy eyes are enough to sway His Honor’s opinion.  Heck, I doubt he even knows an iPhone from a Gameboy Color.
Tumblr media
(Previous Letter)
Dear trearoos,
Rrroooo got it!  That’s a line from Bubs, by the way.  I can’t remember where he said it, though...  Think you could help a fellow Homestar fan out?
Tumblr media
Dear skibot99,
Tumblr media
I’ll do my best at answering, though.  I like to think of ask blogs as a way to “fill in the blanks” by showing what characters are like when they aren’t fulfilling their role in their game, movie, book, etc.  For example, what’s Sonic like when he isn’t busy thwarting Dr. Eggman’s plans, what’s Donkey Kong like when things are peaceful on his island, and what’s Henry Stickmin like when things are (ahem) normal in his world?  And if the character happens to be a silent protagonist (ex. Mario, Link, Kirby, etc.), that’ll give you even more blanks to fill in, which makes it more challenging, but also more fun.
So, the key ingredients for an ask blog are a deep love and knowledge of the series your character(s) are from and a good imagination.  If you know what your characters are like in their series and can fill in the rest with your imagination, it’ll be easy for your followers to go along with the illusion that they’re really talking to people from a fictional universe, which should be your main goal, aside from just having fun with it.  As long as you can make it convincing and fun, there’s no real right or wrong way to do it.
I don’t know very much about the Kingdom Hearts series, but I assume there aren’t any sprites you can grab from a resource page, so you’d either have to make drawings of the characters, find some still images, or clip some from gameplay videos (or even make gifs from them if you’re feeling up to it).  It might take some work to get it the way you want it, but like a lot of things, it gets easier over time.  And in my experience, the best source of motivation is your love for the series and its fandom, so keep that in mind if it starts getting burdensome.  I hope that helps!
Tumblr media
(Previous Post)
Dear starry-nightengale,
It was an announcement so much as something that wasn’t announced.  That letter was in reference to TGS 2020, which, unless I missed something, didn’t mention a new entry in the Ace Attorney series.  That may not be solid proof that it’s reached the end, but that’s what it’s beginning to look like.
Tumblr media
But, as I mentioned before, the fandom’s nowhere near dying, so that’s good news, at least.
Tumblr media
Dear Anonymous,
It’s an interesting idea, but I can’t say I feel the same way (and not just because I’m a closet Justicykes shipper).  Besides their considerable age gap, I see their relationship as more of a big-brother-and-little-sister one.  Whether they’re on the same side or opposing each other, Simon can’t seem to resist the opportunity to tease Athena, but he also knows how to provide help whenever she needs it.  In his own way, at least.
Tumblr media
I also have a hard time picturing Simon in a romantic relationship with anyone, to be honest.  I’m not saying it’s impossible, but any hopeful candidate would have to put up with his moodiness, his twisted humor, and his equally moody feathered friend.  I’m sure there might be someone out there who can deal with all that, but finding them would be a big challenge, to say the least.
Tumblr media
Dear clowncomputing2,
Not at the moment, unfortunately.  I don’t know about the other Mods, but I haven’t watched the anime, and even if I had, making sprites from it would be a bit tricky.  Perhaps that’ll happen somewhere down the road, but for now, characters and cases from the anime are off limits.  Sorry.
Tumblr media
Dear Anonymous,
Youse talkin’ to me!?
Tumblr media
Dear skibot99 again,
For me, it’d have to be Tahrust Inmee.  That might seem unfair, considering his murder was that of himself, but let’s not forget that he was willing to let an innocent woman and her lawyer lose their lives in order to hide the truth.  Normally, this would be enough to give me an overall negative view of a character, but his motive was to protect his wife and unborn child from certain death.  That may not excuse his actions, but it did put him between a rock and a hard place.  I’m honestly not sure what I would be tempted to do in his situation, but I know it’d be a difficult decision.
I definitely feel for Yanni Yogi, too, but we weren’t given as many details about his past, plus his only motive was revenge, so my sympathy for him isn’t quite as strong.  While we’re talking about tragic culprits, I should also mention Simon Keyes, who “was himself a victim,” as Edgeworth worded it, as well as the almost-killer Katherine Hall, who just wanted to find whoever was responsible for her adopted father’s unjust prison sentence.  Not to mention the overload of remorse she displayed afterward.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Previous Letter)
Dear trearoos again,
Yep, I’ve been a fan of the Henry Stickmin series since Infiltrating the Airship.  I’ve been meaning to buy the collection, but haven’t made the time for it just yet.  I’m looking forward to seeing all the fails.
In the meantime, here’s some distraction for you:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dear mungeondaster,
Not yet, but I like what I’ve seen of it...which mostly just includes the blooper reel (Strong Language Warning).  Your description of it makes it sound even more enticing, so maybe I'll get around to it soon.  I've been aching to give something a Co-Mod Seal of Approval lately, anyway.

Dual Destinies semi-stream-of-consciousness thoughts
So I finished Dual Destinies for some time now and I decided to write my stream-of-consciousness-esque (even though it was written after I finished the game, haha) thing. Beware of freaking out and spoilers!
I knew the jacket Apollo wore at the beginning couldn’t have been his but gawd, did it really have to hurt so much to find out it really wasn’t?
When Athena flipped that police officer right into Apollo! Whoo!
I like when Blackquill talks about the different prison inmates. I keep thinking at least some could be references to previous AA villains, but it’s been so long that I don’t remember a lot of them.
Aaaaaaaah! Apollo is so cute! Especially his abashed sprite.
I cannot express how much I love Apollo’s “I’m unamused” face. It is the stuff of stories.
There’s… a distressing amount of typos, which is bad because it’s not as though it’s a bootleg or anything. Heck, there was even a whole segment of conversation with Jinxie which didn’t register in the dialogue log. I remember there was only like 1 typo in all the previous 4 games put together. What happened?
The whole division of Themis Legal Academy kind of confuses me. They have a division for lawyers, prosecutors, and judges, but… prosecutors are lawyers. I suppose it’s to draw a distinction between prosecutors and every other lawyer (defense attorneys aren’t the only lawyers to exist, despite what impression the game tries to give, after all. There are accident lawyers, civil rights lawyers, etc.) I guess it’s because prosecutors are government so it’s different and therefore needs a line to be drawn between? I don’t know.
So you’re telling me this entire school has only two faculty members? Really?
Aristotle Means’s grin is creepy but you don’t need me to tell you that.
Speaking of Aristotle, the whole reason he was caught was because his staff was lodged into Courte’s body to make it appear like Phoenix’s arm but he was carrying that staff when everyone met him at the lecture hall before the mock trial? So… how’s that possible? Did he have a spare staff?
Also, how did Means get the body to stay upright?
I got kind of excited when Robin could’ve possibly been a trans character. She did sort of turn out to be one in a way, I guess, just not in a way I expected :/
My favorite minor characters are probably Hugh and Starbuck (Clay doesn’t count because I don’t actually know all that much about him and I probably only like him that much because of his relation to Apollo and his character design.) I felt sympathy when Hugh revealed he wasn’t a genius and his true age. And Starbuck really did have what it took to go into space despite his fears.
I liked how Phoenix got angry at Ted for attacking Apollo when they were at the Detention Center. Phoenix, your papa bear is showing, haha. I liked it because it shows how Phoenix sees not only Trucy as family, but Apollo and possibly Athena too, so he got mad when someone attacked one of them.
I really disliked the dub in the main storyline (the dub in the DLC case was okay). Every time an animated cutscene played, I’d cringe because the dub sounds like the voice actors were reading off a script. The only dub I liked was Starbuck’s.
I literally screamed when Edgeworth appeared.
I hate his dub the most though.
Grown-up Pearly aaaaaaaaah!
So… I guess we’re not going to be learning about the secret Kristoph Gavin was unconsciously holding? I was kind of hoping to know what it was :/ I hope it’ll be addressed in a future game as part of a larger overarching thing and that they haven’t forgotten it. It’s good to at least have some information on what the black lock was at least.
They kept calling the bandages around Apollo’s eye an eyepatch, but it’s a bandage. Also it didn’t have to be that that long. Someone has a flair for the dramatic = 3=
I get that Apollo shucking his jacket is a symbol of shucking away his doubt and burdens but… that jacket’s still Clay’s! You don’t have to wear it but at least bring it with you!
Best lines of the game: “But what is faith without doubt? That’s why… I need to question her guilt!” There’s just so much in there.
I CAN’T BELIEVE FULBRIGHT(?) WAS THE CULPRIT OHMYGAWD I LIKED HIM AAAAAAAAAAAA
Not gonna lie, when the spy first revealed his Starbuck mask, I was throwing my hands in the air and rolling my eyes and going, of course. But thank gawd the spy wasn’t actually Starbuck.
So the real Fulbright died a year ago and was unidentified ever since. I’m just wondering how it could’ve taken a year to get his fingerprints to identify him.
The real Fulbright’s death also makes me sad because the spy’s impersonation is 100% accurate, which means that this would’ve been what the real Fulbright would’ve been like had he not been killed; a good guy who loves justice and would do anything to help people. The AA universe just lost a good man.
It was really freaky when the spy wore the mask of Phoenix.
Despite having murdered Clay and Metis, I can’t bring myself to hate the spy. He’s just so pitiful.
The dedication Blackquill had towards Metis and Athena. I mean, I could even see that he goes easier on Athena during the Themis trial. Sure he doesn’t hold back but when compared to when he went up against Apollo, he’s less strict.
Gawddammit! It was so adorable how Athena couldn’t tell the difference between robots and humans. But when she had the same line of reasoning for why she put her mother on the operating table thinking she could fix her it quickly became an oh gawd no moment. My heart. Help.
I find myself wishing really badly that Clay hadn’t died. I mean, I knew next to nothing about him except for the few snippets Apollo shared, but his death had hurt Apollo so much and it hurt me to see him hurting that I can’t help but ache for something that can never be. Plus, he seemed like a swell guy. I’m not sure if it’s better that we never get to talk to him in the game or not. Don’t know which would hurt less.
Which makes the final animated segment where Starbuck blasts into space so much more emotional for me, cringey voice-acting and all.
As I’m incredulously selecting Orla as witness, really? We’re really doing this again? Yes. Yes we are. Just like that parrot… NO I WILL NOT LET THAT GO. I’LL PROBABLY NEVER LET THIS GO EITHER.
The whole cross-examination with Orla was funny though.
The ending made me feel sympathetic and soft. It’s great.
But then how’d the blood get on Orla? I mean, if Shipley fell to his death in the show stage pool, that’d explain how it got on the rock, but Orla was never even lowered into that pool so… how?
My favorite moment in the entire game: When Apollo, despite truly wanting to believe in Athena, refuses to look away from his doubts and the evidence and blindingly having faith, choosing instead to try to seek answers for himself and look for help in Phoenix. Apollo truly is my favorite character.
