Well here it is. My Bloodbound review/reactions/essay/idk what.

For some reason, now that it's done most of what I have are critiques 😂 I guess because there were so many amazing things about this book, such great characters and themes, that certain things ended up leaving me... disappointed. But before I get into all that, let me start with what I really, really liked. (adding a cut because I feel like this is going to end up really long lol. also, spoilers ahead. obviously)

THE POSITIVES:

Overall, the vibes, the characters, the themes, and the lore were immaculate. The writers put a lot of thought into the world that they created and the themes they wanted to explore through that world, and I really respect that.

I thought that the vampire council and the clans in NYC was a really cool concept and was a little bummed that we didn't get to do more with vampire politics. Despite hating most everyone on the council, I also loved them. I found them all interesting and unique, and loved seeing the backstories that involved them, such as the scene at the fair or the scene when they all teamed up to take down Gaius. I was actually sad when the Baron and Lester died lol, while it did make for a cool scene, I felt that their deaths left a hole in the story. (oops sorry I did not mean to turn this positives into a half-negatives thing lol)

I swear that the toxic, messed up relationship between Gaius, Kamilah, and Adrian has me by the throat. The concept of a cruel, thousands year old vampire gaining the love and devotion of these two people not through the use of mind control *cough Rheya cough* but through sheer charisma, magnetism, and leadership skills... and then shaping them into tools to be used in his hands. Making them into his queen and his soldier and then forcing them into a cycle of violence while still inspiring them to follow, using them while still loving them... it's one of the greatest pleasures of having read this series to have gotten a taste for this relationship. And now that I've gotten a taste I'm just hungry for more, so this will be rotating in my head for a while yet.

Adrian Raines. My darling. My BABY. There is just something so fascinating, so alluring, about a creature born and shaped for violence, whose heart manages to remain pure. I especially loved how this was explored in Bloodbound 2. You see the heartless, emotionless cruelty that Adrian was capable of at the end of book 1, and then throughout book 2 he struggles with these two sides of himself: the heartless soldier, the angel of death, versus the kind, idealistic, sweet man who's fascinated by the simple things the world has to offer like open fields and sunlight, and the incredible ingenuity and good that the human race is capable of creating. Throughout book 2, this dance of Adrian being the foil to Gaius is clear as day and oh so powerful. Gaius was Rheya's soldier, who was shaped into a killing machine at her side, who was driven to extremes by seeing the way his own people were hunted and killed. Adrian was Gaius's soldier, who was shaped into a killing machine at his side, who had to fight the anger and hatred that tried to pull him to cruelty and snuff out his goodness. Like I said in a previous post, the juxtaposition of this inner warmth and kindness against the person Gaius tried to make him will never not be fascinating.

Kamilah and Adrian siblings bond!! PLEASE they're so cute! I adored how over and over again, we saw them exchange looks and have full on worldless conversations by just their facial expressions. The way they know each other so well, inside and out, and have complete respect for one another, and the way they would die for one another, it just warms my heart and I adore them.

Also, just Kamilah. She's a badass ancient warrior queen, and I really loved seeing how no-nonsense and serious she was. Like she's been doing this for thousands of years, she's seen so much, she's killed so much, I feel that she doesn't think she truly deserves redemption or is as pure as Adrian, but she fights to protect the people under her care. Those who cannot fight for themselves the way she can fight for them.

Gaius Augustine, what a villain you were. I loved how the game never shied away from the nuances in his character. They never painted him in cartoonishly villainous colors with no remorse for his actions. You can see why he became the way he was, and while you can understand that doesn't mean you have to excuse it; it does, however, make him more of an interesting villain. The fact that love and a desire to protect his people is what drove him to extremes makes him a fascinating villain, because his actions, while inarguably evil, are rooted in something that most everyone can understand: love. Although Gaius never knew how to truly love, it doesn't mean that he didn't. He hurt Kamilah and Adrian over centuries, but he never truly wanted to kill them. I appreciated that the various times where Gaius killed someone or almost killed someone with whom he had history (such as Takeshi or when he almost killed Kamilah), he expressed remorse. It wasn't enough to make him stop, because he is a bad man, but the fact that there was remorse in the first place adds more depth and emotion to both his character and the event itself.

I enjoyed the way that MC defeated Rheya. I thought that the twist that Rheya had murdered her own daughter after having given into her anger about the fact that she thought her daughter was murdered was really great. I enjoyed that MC didn't have to physically overpower Rheya; she just had to go back to where the cycles of violence began and show to Rheya herself that was the monster in her own story. I loved that.

It would be remiss of me to not mention Lily Spencer. From start to finish, she was a delight, and I loved how MC was honestly just as geeky as Lily sometimes, she just reigned it in a little bit more. Lily's enthusiasm for life was refreshing for a vampire story, where usually becoming a vampire is compared with death, and yet Lily's take on it was that she had a whole new life to live, new experiences to try out. I really enjoyed her humor, and thought her friendship with MC was both touching and relatable. So have some Lily moments that made me laugh out loud:

Also, the scene where MC died, and then she was Turned, and you woke up in a coffin, and you almost killed that girl in the park... peak cinema. Absolutely delicious, you'd better believe I ate that shit up. I also loved seeing the flashback where you saw how the other vampires reacted to your death. Yes, I enjoyed seeing Adrian in pain, yes, I am an angst fiend and sadist ig.

Sorry I feel like there's more to say but I've been working on this forever so I'm gonna leave the positives at that 😭

THE CRITIQUES:

Let me first preface this by saying that I truly enjoyed Bloodbound. It latched onto my brain, and I enjoyed the journey, and it managed to make me more invested in a Choices book than I have been since I read It Lives. That being said, after finishing it, I couldn't help but feel that many things could have been done better, and a little bit let-down that many of the things that I connected to were not fully explored or expanded upon like I felt like they could have been. So this massive critique going forward is done with love. That's all. ❤️

This one isn't a huge deal, but I was disappointed by the lack of variation that your choices had in the final battle. You had the choice to kill Rheya's vampire guards or leave them, then you had the choice to kill Dracula or leave him. The first time I played I was doing a supervillain route so I was intentionally trying to choose the darker choices and was delighted to see how people were reacting:

I thought that their dialogues were based on the fact I was going on a murderous, merciless rampage, but then when I came back and played and didn't kill everyone, their reactions were all the same. So that was disappointing.

The Jax/Lily death was,,, a choice. I get what they were trying to do. I do. Rheya lost her family, Gaius lost Rheya, Kamilah lost her brother, Adrian lost his family. There were cycles of loss that bred extreme behavior among our cast, and they wanted MC to experience that, too. They wanted to make her a reflection of Rheya, for the moment of losing Jax/Lily to be the trigger that makes her able to lose her humanity and become the very thing she swore to destroy. However, there were a few problems with how it played out! First of all, it's obviously suspect that the two sidelined Black or Asian LIs are the only ones who can die, while Adrian and Kamilah's plot armor protects them. Second of all, they wanted to make this big sacrifice to make MC snap but then they didn't even commit to it. If anything it would've made more sense for the LI to be the one who dies, seeing the impact that it had on MC. Because while my MC cares about Jax, he's probably the person in the crew that she's the least connected to so it felt a little odd for her in particular to lose it while the others were okay. I think that honestly, she would've reacted more like them. Sad, and angry, but without such an extreme reaction. But, the writers simultaneously tried to play it safe by ensuring that your LI doesn't die, while being "brave" and killing off part of the crew, so it just came across feeling odd to me and didn't quite hit the mark of what they were trying to do.

The romantic development was underwhelming. The romance quality skyrocketed in books 2 and 3, but unfortunately by then, the characters were already in relationships and while I enjoyed those scenes, I felt disappointed that we missed a quality relationship arc where we saw the characters fall for each other. I romanced Adrian, and I don't see what was so incredible about mc in the beginning to make him fall for her. She's just some human, and he's a powerful CEO, 300 year old clan leader and vampire council member. That's not say that I don't think he could've fallen for her - in fact, I think it's poetic and makes perfect sense that the man who's so embroiled in his vampire world and vampire politics yet adores humanity would fall for an average human - but the development simply wasn't there. The scene where you first let him drink your blood after breaking him out of jail was underwhelming and there was no emotional weight in the writing of that scene. In book one, it just really felt like the fact that something happened was supposed to be enough for us to believe that it was meaningful, instead of the writing and development showing us how it happened.

The actual plot events were in general... underwhelming. Both books 2 and 3 set up this fascinating potential for scenes and narrative arcs, with Gaius destroying NYC, and then Rheya taking over the city, and both times we just flew away to chase down artifacts and have diamond scenes in pretty places in various countries. I think it was an unfortunate choice to trade the potential of vampire politics for artifact-hunting.

The Order and Xenocrates in particular were woefully under-utilized. The tapestry paintings shed light on a fascinating dynamic between Gaius and Xenocrates, and we see that this anger and hatred has spanned millennia! Xenocrates is the reason that vampires are hated and hunted, he is the reason why Gaius is driven to extremes and decides that his plan to eradicate humans apart from keeping a blood supply for vampires is the only way to protect his people. And then... he just dies in a building collapse, and the Order is destroyed, and this thousands-year-old conflict is snuffed out pretty much immediately. It was disappointing, because there was so much potential in the lore that was created here, it just wasn't taken advantage of in the present storyline.

This one is small, but. Where the heck did MC's mom go 😭 we see one memory of her and then never hear about her again. Did she die? If she's not dead, why is MC not concerned about her while Gaius and Rheya are trying to destroy/take over the world.

This one is also small but worth mentioning - I was so annoyed that MC was forced to speak up and voice her opinion all the time in situations that really didn't involve her. It was just odd to me that Adrian's assistant thought it would be a good idea to speak up in a vampire council meeting after only having known about vampires for like. A few days lol. There were many times where I cringed at having to choose something to say because I, frankly, would have just remained silent because it wasn't my place to speak.

Maybe this is just me but... I definitely felt like Jax was done dirty by the writers. Not just in that he was sidelined and had fewer scenes and plot relevance apart from "being part of the crew", but I think his development as a character was weaker than the others. By book 3, I do feel like he came more into himself, and it was nice to see him have a character arc regarding his relationship with Takeshi, but for books 1 and 2, I personally felt like the writers didn't really know him. He was sort of just... bland, left vaguely blank aside from the "rebel vampire leader" for a while. The writers themselves said that he was the hardest character to write, which makes sense because I could tell that it took them a while to figure out who he really was.

Now for my biggest critiques, mostly centering around the handling of Gaius's character and missed potential.

First, Gaius's character development and thing with Rheya. I... was not a fan at all of the brainwashing plot point. I found that it made Gaius's character far less interesting and seemed to be almost incompatible with previous portrayals of his character and who they had been creating. For example, Rheya supposedly severed his compassion for humans, yet we see a direct contradiction of that when he had empathy for Kano, a dying child who'd lost his parents, and decided to Turn him in order to save his life and give him a chance to avenge his family. What made him so fascinating to me originally was the fact that DEVOTION was what ultimately turned him into a monster: first, devotion to Rheya, and second, devotion to his own people. By book 3, he was reduced from a terrifying vampire leader who would put his life on the line to protect his own people (as seen in crypt scene where he risks his life to save other vampires instead of running to safety) to a mindless zealot of Rheya whose only purpose seemed to be "Obey the goddess!" While the devotion to her is fine, it saddened me that his role as a leader who let fanaticism guide him as he sought to protect vampires was overshadowed by this interpersonal conflict between two individuals. I think there was a hugely missed opportunity to pit his two devotions against each other when he learns that Rheya doesn't actually care about him OR the vampires as a whole, and would happily take their lives if it meant gaining more power for herself. To watch him wrestle between his devotion to Rheya, his beloved goddess, and his devotion to his vampire progeny... now that is a character arc I'd love to dive into. Imagine if, in addition to being angry that Rheya used him like a tool, he was also angry that she wanted to hurt vampires. Just imagine something like this: "While you were asleep I was building a kingdom for our people, while you were gone I was the one who stepped up to protect them! And now you think you can come back, and use them, and kill them, and that I'll support you?" The vibes... immaculate.

Going along with the topic of Gaius being responsible for his own actions vs the concept of brainwashing, if Gaius hadn't been brainwashed and simply turned against Rheya because he realized she didn't care about the well-being of vampires and saw them as tools in her quest for power, I feel as though it would've made the alliance between Gaius and MC's crew all that much more interesting. A fragile alliance between people with a common enemy, but Gaius is still not an ally because he still disdains humanity, and once Gaius helps you get Rheya out of the way, you know that you'll have to deal with him next... mmm delicious.

As an add on, learning that it was all the result of brainwashing opens up a whole can of worms of "okay this man still committed war crimes but how much is he actually responsible for?" that I frankly don't feel was necessary, because Gaius was fully fascinating all on his own without needing to add the element of brainwashing to it. I just felt like it had the result of turning a fascinating, layered, nuanced character into "black-and-white" to make his redemption easier for lay readers to stomach.

Even after having bought every single tapestry diamond scene and plenty of diamond scenes with various characters, I was still left with lingering confusion about what happened in the past, namely: what did Gaius's empire look like and how did it work, what exactly were Kamilah and Adrian doing to spread his empire and enforce his rule, and what about him made them choose to swear fealty in the first place? They talk so much about all the people they killed and yet we really only saw them kill people who weren't exactly innocent? Iirc we only saw Adrian kill confederate soldiers, a British soldier who tried to kill him first, and a rogue vampire that had just drained a man of blood. And yeah, there was some sketchiness about it because the confederate soldiers weren't attacking him, and there was a young kid with them, but at the end of the day they were enemy soldiers fighting to maintain slavery and this is war - hardly the same thing as ruthlessly murdering strangers. Anyway the point is that I would've liked a clearer picture of what they did, to truly see them at their lowest points. And then, to see what was the catalyst that started pushing them back up again. I would've liked to know who they were sent to kill, and why, instead of vaguely "I've killed so many people." Give me the details!!

Like Part 1, I am Tired now and I feel like I've said most of what I want to say. So I am finished with my critiques section.

Leonore got slightly up on her tiptoes and threw her arms around Kamilah's neck. Her lips easily found hers in a crashing kiss. Kamilah growled against her and she pulled away breathless.

"What's the matter, my Queen?"

"Nothing, dear. How about we continue this in our bedroom and not here in the kitchen?", she raised an eyebrow while preparing breakfeast for Leonore and herself.

"Hmmm, maybe later. I'm hungry."

"But I want now.", Kamilah ordered, lifted her up and Leonore wrapped her legs around her waist. Kamilah nibbled on her lower lip.

"Hmm... I'm not much into Halloween and dressing up, but for you I could. Have you thought about anything already, sweety? A theme or anything.", Kamilah raised an eyebrow.

"Oh, I did. My vampire queen.", Leonore smirked, opened her mouth and then two fangs appeared while her eyes turned into a red color.

"We'll go as vampires, Leo? Hmm, why not? I like that idea. Can't be that hard.", she winked.

"Oh no, we won't go as ordinary vampires. We'll go as a hot vampire couple, my Queen.", Leonore corrected her and planted a quick kiss on Kamilah her cheek.

Authors Note: I’ve been inactive for a long while, so I’d like to start off with a sincere thank you, to those who have stuck to this account and read, possibly even reread some of my works. Thank you will never suffice, so I will persist on posting at least once a week. This series was a pop up idea, and if the audience favors it, I’ll be more than willing to accept ideas for new series. One shot requests will also be taken (and yes those of you who have previously requested one shots, I am in the midst of finishing your stories as well). But, the other, invites unforeseen power. The power that only God has possessed until now. Power that invokes supremacy, invincibility. Such a force can never stop growing, never stop pleasing its host as they call for more and more, desperate to find the missing piece to end all the problems humanity has ever faced, sorrows that the greatest of soldiers have been crushed with, but at what cost..?

*tick….tock* Kamilah’s chestnut orbs flick back and forth across the theater’s stage as Gauis grabs hold of the Bloodkeeper, delving into her mind to shine light on every weakness he can possibly find, to seal the devil’s deal and give rise to his ever powerful Bloodkeeper Queen. Amy. Gauis. Amy. Gauis.

She can’t move, her body bound by an invisible force unknown to the mortal word as she sees the fate of creation flash across the stage, in a daunting, dangerous play being orchestrated by the most malicious director.

Time is slowing but the pressure is mounting mounting mounting, nothing can be done, or can it? Will the cries of Kamilah’s plea be enough to speak to the morality of the Bloodkeeper or will it just be another waste of time as the sweat drips down her sun kissed cheek to the bloodied fabric of her once crisp suit. Panic rises and the blood rushes to Kamilah’s head as thoughts scramble her mind of how to escape and how to reverse all the wrongs she ever made and the thoughts of how her family ended up in the theatre and this terrifying situations daunts her and…

Not now, not when the alluring pressure for a higher power has taken over Amy’s desire to be more than Rheya could ever have achieved. Not now, when Amy’s body jolts and squirms like an evil spirit has entered inside her physical form. Now when her eyes, a gastly black void filling what was once ember diamonds, meet Kamilah’s.

The once pure Bloodkeeper’s face snarls into a demonic grin, her smile replaced with shark like razors as the most gut wrenching laugh bellows from her blackened soul.

“I’ve won, again, Kamilah. I knew you were nothing more than the weakling you always were, that’s why no one ever remains at your side for long. That’s why you’ll never succeed.”

His droning voice become a distant buzz in Kamilah’s ears, her mind fogged with heartbreak, deceit, trauma as she lived through it all again. Another broken promise. Why did she continuously fail to find her true love, when that’s all she ever wanted. The money, the power, was nothing to her. Her company, her cars, her homes and pools and fancy this and that’s were pure pieces of shit. Her respectable victories in battles were nothing more than a small achievements. But love, love was her greatest desire, which she failed to grasp.

She promised not to shed a tear, but not even an immortal being can escape the clutches of sorrow that a heartbreak is renowned for.

The invisible chains which held her grim destiny in sight violently released, throwing Kamilah onto the stiff wooden floor as she sobbed to the cold surface under her cheek.

It didn’t matter anymore that Amy had embraced Gauis’ twisted words and deceitful promises, which led her astray to the path of evil. It didn’t matter that she was now embracing Gauis into her arms, tangling her fingers into the curly mass of his hair as their lips locked with an intensity that radiated throughout the building. None of it mattered.

Kamilah’s tears relentlessly dripped into the bloodied cracks of the stage, frantically searching for a way out as if the pain was their own, far too paramount to bear. Her built frame shuddered and shook with every cry that roared from her soul, desperate to end the suffering. To end it all.

Please let it be a dream, please…

But that voice inside her head came to no avail. The end was here, the end was now. The fate of the world, the universe was now in the hands of Gauis and his Amy, the corrupted and devilish form of her at least.

Kamilah opened her eyes with great strength, salty rivers coursing down her pale cheeks as they lay upon the black pile of ashes that scattered the floor around her.

Adrian, dead. Jax, murdered. Lily, brutally killed. All remain nothing but distant memories and black specs of ash, now.

Kamilah had foreseen it from the start. She never trusted Amy, she had warned Adrian so. But she let her emotions dictate to her refined sharpness, which flicked on the lightbulb of hope inside her. She was genuinely in love like never before, and in one corner of her broken heart she had wished the succulent promise would last for eternity, but it’s never that simple.

Not for Kamilah Sayeed. And Kamilah Sayeed? She is never as foolish as a Gauis may believe. She certainly was broken, defeated, and on the last straw, but she knew what had to be done.

The fate of the universe rested upon her shoulders, and there was no turning back.

As Stacy sits at her desk working on an article, Nick finishes up on a journal entry from his last case.

Nick - (Right, there we go.)

He closes the book, and just as he goes to get a drink, his phone rings in his pocket. Not wanting to disturb Stacy, he steps out and answers, holding the phone to his ear.

Nick - Hey, Ives.

Ivy - Evening, Nick. You able to meet tomorrow, got something for you.

Nick - I guess I can. What's this about?

Ivy - It's a bit difficult to explain without what I have. I'll be over tomorrow.

Nick - Uh, okay then. I'll see you in the morning then.

Ivy - Have a good night, Nick.

The phone beeps to signal hanging up and Nick heads back in, confused.

Stacy - Everything okay?

Nick - Yeah. That was Ivy. Says she has something for me. Gonna be over in the morning.

He looks over at her now black computer screen.

Nick - Article all finished?

Stacy - Not yet. But I've got to that point where words aren't looking like words anymore. So calling it a night.

Nick - Fair enough. Calling it a night sounds like a good idea.

Nick locks the door and the two switch everything off before heading to bed.

The following morning, Nick makes his morning coffee when someone knocks on the door. Knowing who it is, he goes to unlock it, opening it to Ivy.

Ivy - Morning.

Nick - Come on in.

Nick moves to the side to let Ivy in, closing the door behind her. She sets her bag down and takes a laptop out, opening it up. Stacy steps out, grabbing her own coffee.

Stacy - Morning, Ivy.

Ivy - Hi, Stacy. How you doing?

Stacy - Same as always.

Her computer loaded, Ivy opens up a file and then takes out a manila file from her bag, looking at Nick.

Ivy - So this portrait came into our possession a few days ago, but it's a weird one.

She hands Nick the file. Opening it, he takes out two photos of the portrait, a warrior in armour with a sword. Except in one, the sword blade is pure white with a white aura around it, and in the other, it is fully black and surrounded by shadow.

Nick - Okay... that is weird.

Ivy - Check this.

She opens a video file of her with Krom and Garrus.

THEN

Garrus, Ivy, and Krom look over the portrait, the sword seeming to change every time they blink.

Garrus - I've never seen this kind of magic...

Krom - You me both.

Ivy - Hang on, I'm going to try something.

She uses her hand to cover the camera lens and when she removes it, the sword in the portrait has changed. She does it again. And again the sword has changed.

NOW

Nick and Stacy share a look of confusion and Nick looks over the photos of the portrait again.

Nick - What do we know about the warrior?

Ivy - That's where you come in. I was able to get a meeting with Kamilah Sayeed, but I was hoping you could go in my place. I want to try and learn what I can about the portrait back in New Orleans.

Nick - Right. So you want me to go to New York?

Ivy - Actually, she'll be in Portland tomorrow. I said I would send a Nighthunter in my place. And you're respected enough.

Stacy - We could make a small trip out of it. Been a while since we went away somewhere.

Nick smiles at Stacy and nods.

Nick - Alright, I'll go meet with the Queen of Vampires. Never thought I'd be saying that.

Ivy - Thank you.

After going through a few more details, Ivy takes her leave, opening up a portal to her library in New Orleans and steps through. The portal closes and Nick turns to Stacy.

Nick - Need to figure out how she does that. It would make things so much easier.

Stacy turns back to the file, looking at the two photos of the painting.

Stacy - This is so weird.

Nick - One word for it.

Stacy - You got any theories?

Nick shakes his head.

Nick - Nothing.

Stacy - Must be important though if Kamliah Sayeed's name is in the mix.

Nick - We'll find out tomorrow. Gonna be hard to concentrate for the rest of the day though.

Stacy puts the photos back in the folder before looking over at Nick.

Stacy - How about we pack and head out this evening? Have a day out before meeting with her.

Nick - I can get behind that.

Stacy - Come on.

She holds out her hand and Nick takes it, heading upstairs to pack.

Opening the door to their hotel room, Nick sets his and Stacy's bags down as she looks around the room.

Stacy - Good view.

Nick - Yeah?

Stacy - Yeah.

Ditching his jacket, Nick collapses on one of the chairs in front of the tv, letting his arms hang over the edge. Stacy sets herself down on his lap, looping her arms around his neck and kissing his cheek.

Stacy - You okay?

Nick - Tired. I could actually fall asleep right here.

Stacy - You could, or you could sleep in the bed and be comfier.

Laughing, Nick scoops Stacy up and carries her over to the bed, setting her down. Keeping her arms around him, Stacy pulls Nick down, pressing her lips to his before letting go so he can get back on his feet. They quickly change into pajamas and soon switch off for the night.

The next evening, Nick and Stacy arrive at the hotel address given to them and step in. They're stopped by bodyguards the moment they step into the building, their eyes the giveaway sign of being Vampires.

Guard 1 - You Nick Taylor?

Nick - Yeah. Here to see Kamilah Sayeed.

The guard puts his finger on his earpiece.

Guard 1 - The Nighthunter is here. He also has a girl with him.

There's a moment of silence before the guard nods and then gestures to the couple to follow him to an elevator. After an awkwardly silent elevator ride, the guard steps to the side and they step out to a penthouse suite.

Nick - Damn... This is something.

A door opens and a woman the couple have only seen in photos stands before them. Kamilah Sayeed, Queen of the Vampires.

Kamilah - Mr Taylor. And...

She looks at Stacy.

Stacy - Stacy Green.

Kamilah extends her hand out to Stacy, who shakes it.

Kamilah - I've read some of your articles. You're quite the journalist.

Stacy - Thank you!

Kamilah - Shall we?

She walks over to two sofas facing each other with a table in between and takes a seat on one while Nick and Stacy sit opposite.

Kamilah - I assume you've been made aware of the painting by Ivy.

Nick - The sword changes with each blink.

Nick presents the two photos given to him by Ivy.

Stacy - What's the deal with the sword?

Kamilah - It's the blade of Morella.

Nick - Morella? As in Blades of Light and Shadow Morella? It's real?!

Kamilah - That series is inspired by a story from Morella. Like Lamrian, it's a realm separated from ours. But this sword has found it's way into our realm. And is currently in possession of a collector, who, unironically, calls himself the Collector, is known for having questionable methods of acquisition.

Stacy - So he's a thief?

Kamilah - That's one word for him. Ivy and I would like to see it out of his possession and placed somewhere safe.

Nick - You want me to steal it.

Kamilah - Not alone. You'll be working with two others chosen by me. Another Nighthunter and an Attuned.

Nick mulls the words over, if the television series is anything to go by, then the sword is dangerous. It doesn't take him long to come to a decision.

Nick - I'll take the job.

Kamilah - Just like that?

Stacy - Just like that.

Kamilah - Well then. You'll need these.

Kamilah produces invitations and slides them across the table.

Kamilah - There's a gala tomorrow night. You'll be crashing the party, as they say. Once the sword is secured, return here.

Nick - We will.

Kamilah - The others will meet you at the gala. Miss Green, you'll remain here with me whilst the others are acquiring the blade. I'm interested to learn about some of the details behind your articles.

Stacy - Oh!

Nick smiles to himself as the shock of the sentence hits Stacy.

The next evening, Nick looks around at some of the artefacts on display, looking for any sign of the blade, upstairs, fellow Nighthunter, Katherine watches the guests as Nick walks the floor. Outside, Atlas Ernhardt watches the Collector as he speaks with guests. The three of them remaining in contact through earpieces.

Atlas - Taylor, any luck yet?

Nick - No sign of the sword yet.

Katherine - Nothing on display up here either.

Atlas - So it's not on display, makes it easier to take.

Nick - But harder to find.

Nick looks around, finding a door not being guarded and slips through. He checks each room, opening the doors slightly. And soon he comes across one with more artefacts and wooden boxes.

Katherine - This looks like the room.

Nick - Aaah!

Nick jumps out of his skin from Katherine's voice behind him and flashes his middle finger at her.

Katherine - You wound me.

They enter the room and Nick uses his phone torch to illuminate in front of him. He soon comes across a longer wooden box and pries it open. Removing the fabric wrappings, an Obsidian Sword lie in front of him.

Nick - Got it!

He sets his phone down and takes the sword in hand, but a stinging sensation begins travelling up his hand. Dropping the sword, Nick falls to his knees as the pain spreads.

Katherine - Taylor!

When Katherine reaches him, Nick is no longer how he was. His hair black and his skin grey with black veins along his hands and neck. When he stands, she sees the white's of his eyes are now black and his iris's greyer than before.

Katherine - Oh no...

Atlas - What is it?

Nick takes the sword up again and a swirl of shadows engulfs him. Once they spread, Nick is gone.

Katherine - Atlas, we need to leave...

So, I've actually liked the first two Bloodbound books (especially once we got past Adrian as the only available LI. The whole 'sexy billionaire boss philanthropist but also a vampire' angle kind of threw me and made me roll my eyes, but characters like Jax and Lily? I adored.) but one of the things that bugged me is how the writers seemed to forget that MC was a human woman among demigods, most of the time, and also that vampires have heightened senses that seem to be always on.

Like, oh, no, you need back up for something dangerous, Adrian? No, Kamilah, your beloved sister of the heart, who can literally punch through reinforced concrete can't go for Reasons. Jax, the dude you totally had a threesome with can't, either. Nope, not your Childe, Lily, either. Better take this slender human woman who thinks a denim miniskirt and a lacy camisole is a good look for going to fight Vampire Caligula.

Like, girl, you're a human being with very little in the way of combat training and your biggest benefit is as a walking bloodbag. You could be replaced by a quick grocery trip to the local Red Cross and a dufflebag. Stop threatening Gaius that you're going to take him down, it's like a trembling newborn chihuahua screaming defiantly at a dragon and it came off more as hilarious than anything.

One scene featured Adrian and MC making out in a vampire church they weren't supposed to be in, and hiding from other vampires. But... heartbeats. Whispering. Heightened senses. Be consistent, dangit. 😂

Also, I had to pay diamonds to wear the correct outfit to infiltrate the Order of the New Dawn (who were portrayed almost exclusively as unjustified monsters when, you know... the Blood Queen is still running around murdering people who get in her way.) which... why couldn't this one just be a freebie, PB? Everybody else got to wear their outfits, dangit, give me the skintight catsuit version for free.

Literally every scene with Aiden lmao. But here are some particular favorite Aiden scenes:

At Brian's party where MC can show Aiden "some sexy moves". A bit of an awkward scene I have mixed feelings about but I headcanon Aiden eventually tries to learn some of those kinds of moves to impress MC. And when he actually shows them off to MC it just stops them in their tracks lol.

The scene where you can listen to Aiden play piano. That was the "no going pack, point of no return" moment for me, where I knew he was the LI I wanted to pursue in HSS.

When Aiden shows up to MC's door to ask them to homecoming with a violin tune he composed solely for that purpose.

And then when he has the audacity during the carriage ride scene at the carnival to go "I wish I could plan stuff for you" as if he didn't just compose a whole ass song just to ask MC to homecoming with.

When Isa tries to make Frank escort Aiden from the basketball game and you can have your MC stand between them to "defend Aiden's honor".

When you explore the basement with Aiden and you find out Isa wants to expel your MC and Aiden gets all like "I'll do everything in my power to make sure you're not expelled."

When MC and Aiden become official and Aiden straight up cheers and jumps in the air when MC says yes.

When they dance together to a Singin in the Rain song at the Golden Griddle

The scene where they walk along the beach at Caleb's party

Aiden's entire promposal CG

Their post-promposal cliffside picnic scene

MC and Aiden confessing their love for each other at prom

Many of the moments in their scene on the balcony, but especially when you can choose to shout the Circle of Life song to make an echo and how that eventually leads to MC liFTING UP AIDEN !!!!!

And as for non-Aiden scenes...

Kamilah saying "I'm her queen, and she's mine" in the climactic scene of BB book 2

Getting to spin Tyler in MAH in the scene where he and MC dance on the football field

Getting to defend Tyler from asshole jocks in a MAH premium scene

ROE Newlyweds where you have options to choose how MC and LI go into their new house together. Either having them walk in at the same time, having LI carry MC in, or having MC carry LI in. Obviously I chose the 3rd one and it did not disappoint. For the record I think all romance scenes in Choices should follow this kind of formula whenever possible.

[NSFW warning] TNA 3 was a trainwreck, but the smut scene in Ch1 gives you an option to play with Sam's ass and they describe MC slipping a finger between his cheeks. It was a very small scene, but I'm pretty sure this is the first time in PB history that a female character was allowed to get into her man's bootyhole and I was very here for it.

In a premium scene with Tom in Ch1 of ILB, you can choose to say this lil flirty compliment to him and he just jumps and scatters stuff on the boat everywhere.

All the moments in the Imtura/m!MC route where it's just so shamelessly r/RoleReversal. Like when she picks MC up, or lifts him and spins him around when they dance, when he wraps his legs around her waist, the numerous times they draw attention to Imtura's flexing biceps, etc.

Estela going "Do. Not. Touch. My. Husband!". I haven't played her route yet but this moment's mere existence is why I need to do an Estela x m!MC route immediately.

ES Book 3 Ch8/9? when they're in some cave/dungeon thing, Craig sees Zahra's decoy skeleton with the streak of maroon hair, and just screams and breaks down. Those two were easily my favorite relationship in that series and this scene cements it.

Drake's swimsuit CG in TRR 1. One of the few rare times where a male character wears an actually flattering swimsuit lol.

The premium scene in TRR 1 Ch1 where you can take Liam on a boat ride to see the Statue of Liberty. Fun fact, TRR 1 was the first Choices book I ever started, right when I first downloaded the app. Once he started talking about how much he appreciated my MC for that boat ride he won my heart almost instantly.

HSS:CA Book 2 ending where Ajay calls my MC "janu".

Val Greaves referring to empress Azura as "She Who Craps Lightning".

That one CG of the stripper running in BP.

Choices LIs

I've done something like this before, but it was nearly three years ago, so it's time for an update. (Plus, I saw this floating around, and I was bored, so why not?)

Books with a single LI: I tend to default to the female version of any customizable LI, especially on a first playthrough. I'll sometimes romance a male LI with a male MC, but I rarely do m/f romances. The exception is A Very Scandalous Proposal; I don't like the Ava sprites, so I almost always choose Simon instead.

In this category, I like Trystan Thorne, Kieran, Dakota Winchester, Simon Montjoy, Manu Nakeli, and Kit Jackson. I feel pretty neutral toward Cassian Keane, Clarke, and Jacqueline Monroe. I don't like Sam Dalton. And the entire book Surrender can kindly fuck off.

Across the Void: Gonna be honest, despite having read this through at least twice, I wouldn't be able to tell you a thing about the LIs or their personalities. I think I went for Titania my first playthrough - or was it Kepler?

America's Most Eligible: Jen's my favorite here, though I'd like to try a run where I dump someone for Bianca.

Baby Bump: Myra.

Bachelorette Party: Aisha.

Big Sky Country: I love Juliette dearly, but sometimes my Hallmark-loving brain kicks in and I have to pick Sawyer.

Blades of Light and Shadow: All four are amazing and I love them. I love my ladies the best, but I have a soft spot for Tyril as well. I'd love a big polycule here.

Bloodbound: Kamilah takes the top spot, but Lily's a close second.

A Courtesan of Rome: Sabina and Syphax are tied as my favorites, and I'm becoming more fond of Cassius the more I play. I'd like Antony to go away forever, please.

The Crown and the Flame: For Kenna, I alternate between Val and Annelyse. For Dom, I prefer Sei.

Desire and Decorum: Annabelle, always.

Distant Shores: I actually tend to go for Edward here, surprisingly. Almost always with a male MC, though.

The Elementalists: Shreya or Aster.

Endless Summer: I've tried all four. With female MCs, I tend to lean toward Quinn. With male MCs, I like Estela or Sean.

Foreign Affairs: Either Tatum or Ayna.

The Freshman: Becca is my queen. I also like Kaitlyn and Zig, but it's hard to pass up Becca's route.

The Haunting of Braidwood Manor: Eleanor. Is there even really a choice here?

The Heist: Monaco: Sonia. This is one of the few instances where a guaranteed female character is written as the "main" love interest, and she's amazing and I love her romance route.

Hero: Eva.

High School Story: Emma or Maria.

High School Story: Class Act: Skye.

Home for the Holidays: Holly.

Hot Couture: Luz.

Immortal Desires: Both. Both is good.

It Lives Beneath: Probably Imogen or Tom.

It Lives in the Woods: Andy or Ava.

Laws of Attraction: Aislinn.

LoveHacks: Ben.

Mother of the Year: I love all three equally. I literally cycle through them each time I play.

My Two First Loves: I went for Ava the first time, but I really love Noah as well.

Nightbound: Vera or Cal.

Open Heart: Jackie and Rafael are my favorites, but I think Bryce is awesome as well. I can't stand the other guy.

Passport to Romance: Um... Marisa, I suppose?

Perfect Match: Hayden, Sloane, and Alana. Though sometimes I'll go for the entire polycule, because I can.

Platinum: No strong preference here. Maybe Raleigh? Though I like Shane's vibes as well.

Queen B: Zoey, with a dose of flirting with Poppy.

Red Carpet Diaries: Teja, I guess, though the whole series is sort of meh for me.

Ride or Die: Probably Mona's at the top, though I have enjoyed doing Colt and Logan runs before.

Rising Tides: No preference. Honestly, I don't even remember who I chose the first time.

The Royal Masquerade: Kayden. Mostly because of the looks thing, honestly.

The Royal Romance: Hana. Though if I could choose Olivia, I'd be all over that.

Rules of Engagement: Dean for the MC, and Mira for the Party Twin.

Save the Date: Lindsay or Simon.

Slow Burn: Still playing for the first time, but so far I think I prefer Julia.

Sunkissed: Eliana.

The Unexpected Heiress: Gemma.

Veil of Secrets: Kate and Naomi.

Wishful Thinking: Jaime.

Wolf Bride: Morgan. Go away, wolf dude.
