With all of us stuck at home, I thought I'd try a fun thing I've seen some other artists doing -- coloring pages! 

These pages are based off of my original illustrations, and they’re free for your personal use — You can print them, color them and post them on social, but please keep the credit in, and tag me too! I want to see what you make with them! If you have an iPad but no printer, you can also just import it into @procreateapp and color it there (share your process video if you do!!).

I'll be releasing a new one every Saturday for the next 4 weeks, so keep an eye out! I’ll share my favorites in my stories on Instagram (@ KendyllHillegas). 

Please no commercial uses like selling, re-purposing or putting in your portfolio.

What is one piece of advice you would give to a young illustrator? From @kendyllhillegas, Boston, Massachusetts (by way of Encinitas, California): “Focus on taking the one next step that moves you in the direction you want to go (usually at the beginning this is just drawing and maybe sharing it online). You don’t have to know where the finish line is, or even necessarily have a goal right away. Just take one step. Then another. Then another. An imperfect, uncertain start and a trajectory that changes course many times and even has some failures, is infinitely better than never even trying.”

who inspires you as a scientific illustrator?

Buckle in Anon because this is going to be a long list. I should start off by mentioning the artists who set me on this path. A little more than five years ago I was an art student in Community college and I worked for the art department there for about 2 years. In 2012 I helped to hang an exhibition for a local botanical and scientific illustrator named Judy Waller. Judy and her husband, John, are both illustrators that work on textbooks. Below is a painting she gave to me in thanks for helping her with the show. (http://www.johnandjudywaller.com)

 In 2013 I met another illustrator named John Megahan who was at first apprehensive about seeing my sketchbook but said afterwards that I could do this kind of work full time. He encouraged me to utilize the collections at the Marine facility I was interning at. Below is one of the digital paintings he was working on when we met. (http://www.johnmegahan.com/index.php)

 In 2016 I managed to also take a Scientific Illustration course at Oregon State with David Maddison. In addition to his entomological research he makes beautiful and realistic beetle illustrations with all kinds of media. Some inspirational historical figures for me have been Albrecht Durer, Ernst Haeckel and Maria Sibylla Merian among others.I also feel very heavily inspired by my fellow artists and illustrators on Tumblr, including: @jbatesart, @laurenrakes, @tiffanybozic, @kathybernie, @alithographica, @kcgillies, @virginiagreene, @triruntu, @franzanth , @cyan-biologist , @simkaye, @quinnidae, @skyekathryn, @thoughtsupnorth, @thecivilizedplanets, @blackseafoam, @nambroth, @damaximosguyart, @nathanvieland, @chelsealinaeve, @teaganwhite, @artofmaquenda and @kendyllhillegas. I may have forgotten some but there are so many people that influence and continue to influence me. Please give them a look and a follow.

Whatt? Sequel???

There’s a sequel/reboot in the planning. Personally, I’m not holding my breath on it actually happening until I see a trailer, but Lisa Henson is producing it and Fede Alvarez and Jay Basu are doing the script--at least as of April.

I haven’t heard anything about it in the past few months, and I tend toward skepticism where films are concerned. So I’m not getting any hopes up until I have reason to. But that’s just me.
