Can't wait to watch this!!! 😀 Nikolaj will play William the Conqueror while James is playing Harold II, the Earl of Wessex. It'll start filming next year to air on the BBC in the UK and possibly Paramount+ in the US (though it says Paramount is selling it even here in the US so it might go to a different streamer/network instead). More cast will be announced soon too.
ETA: Adding on from James' Instagram post this is the first time this part of history and the Battle of Hastings has been told to this scale. It's an 8 episode miniseries too.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has eight seasons of faux Medieval cred thanks to his character Jaime Lannister on Game of Thrones. In an upcoming production by the BBC and CBS Studios he gets to recreate some actual 11th century history in the series King and Conqueror.
Nikolaj's character never got to rule the Seven Kingdoms. But in King and Conqueror he portrays William the Conqueror who became King of England and ultimately the founder of the royal line which still reigns in London.
George R.R. Martin was heavily influenced by English, French, and Scottish history in ASoIaF. GRRM may have had William the Conqueror in mind when writing about Aegon I Targaryen.
In 1066, the English King Edward the Confessor died without an heir. As if dying without a direct descendant to claim the throne wasn't one of the most chaotic things a king could do, Edward took it a step further: He allegedly promised the throne to both his brother-in-law, Harold Godwinson, and to a distant relative, William of Normandy. Harold and William weren't the only ones with a claim, either. While the pope endorsed William's claim, the resulting war of succession would force Harold to fight Harald Hardrada, the king of Norway, who also claimed the thrones of Denmark and England and invaded the latter alongside Harold's brother, Tostig. Anglo-Saxon King Harold would have to defeat Harald before meeting William and his Norman invasion at the Battle of Hastings, all in the same year. If that sounds to you like a lot of drama that could easily be its own television series, you aren't alone. CBS Studios and the BBC are teaming to produce "King and Conqueror," a show about this most pivotal event in English history. James Norton ("Happy Valley") and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau ("Game of Thrones") are attached to be the titular King Harold and William the Conqueror, respectively. [ ... ] Historians might disagree on whose side of the story is more accurate, but screenwriters and producers agree that no matter what happened, the 1,000-year-old story will make for great television. Michael Robert Johnson ("Sherlock Holmes") will pen the series while Baltasar Kormákur ("2 Guns") will direct. "King and Conqueror" begins production in 2024.
There's actually a physical artistic link between the account of William's conquest in the 1060s and Game of Thrones.
After William's victory, his half-brother Bishop Odo was apparently the commissioner of a tapestry embroidered with scenes which tell the epic story of William's conquest. The cloth, now known as the Bayeaux Tapestry is an amazing 70 meters long. It can be viewed here.
So volunteers at the Ulster Museum in Northern Ireland where GoT was produced created a tapestry in the style of the Bayeaux Tapestry which tells the story of all eight seasons of GoT. See our 2019 post about it.

CBS Studios today announced new eight-part historical drama series King and Conqueror starring James Norton (Little Women, Mr. Jones, Happy Valley) as Harold, Earl of Wessex and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones, Mama, Oblivion) as William, Duke of Normandy.
Written by Michael Robert Johnson (Sherlock Holmes, The Frankenstein Chronicles) and with the opening episode directed by Baltasar Kormákur (Trapped, Everest, Adrift), King and Conqueror will premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
James Norton will also executive produce through his production company, Rabbit Track Pictures and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau will direct an episode and also serves as executive producer. Filming is set to take place in Iceland next year. The series is produced by The Development Partnership, Rabbit Track Pictures, Shepherd Content, RVK Studios and CBS Studios in association with the BBC.
King and Conqueror is the story of a clash that defined the future of a country – and a continent – for a thousand years, the roots of which stretch back decades and extend out through a pair of interconnected family dynasties, struggling for power across two countries and a raging sea. Harold of Wessex and William of Normandy were two men destined to meet at the Battle of Hastings in 1066; two allies with no design on the British throne, who found themselves forced by circumstance and personal obsession into a war for possession of its crown.

The trades "forgot" to mention Michael Robert Johnson also wrote the epic bomb movie Pompeii with Kit Harington. Ncw sure knows how to pick them. 😅 Another 🚩is this series will be on Paramount+ 🤢
I didn't even know this was a thing but yeah anon the fact the writer is the same dude who did Pompeii doesn't inspire much confidence tbh. Of course it's not going to be referenced as being one of Mr. Johnson's highlights in these articles considering what a flop that movie was. They obviously don't want people to know he was involved with that mess lol. Sherlock Holmes story wasn't good but was still a huge success thanks to Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law.....never heard of Frankenstein Chronicles.
James Norton though.....I really liked him in Death Comes to Pemberley and The Nevers.
Nikolaj does have a bad habit of choosing poor projects especially after GoT but this story looks like it actually has potential? The main problem here is the writer....crazy how CBS didn't hire a more acclaimed writer for this so yeah this is a case of wait and see but idk.
Oh yeah and being on Paramount Plus will probably limit it's audience here in the states....don't know about the BBC over in the UK since not even it's biggest show Doctor Who can score big ratings anymore.

James Norton (Happy Valley) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones) are set to star in the new CBS Studios period drama series King and Conqueror from creator Michael Robert Johnson (Sherlock Holmes). The series is based on the 11th-century figures Harold of Wessex (Norton) and William of Normandy (Coster-Waldau) and is set to begin production in 2024.
“We are thrilled to partner with James, Nikolaj, Baltasar and the entire creative team on King and Conqueror, a truly groundbreaking series with world-class talent and global reach,” Lindsey Martin, senior vice president of international co-productions and development at CBS Studios said in a statement. “Michael’s scripts offer a bold and fresh take on a story that has endured for nearly 1,000 years, and yet, the themes are as contemporary and relevant as ever. We are incredibly proud of what the team has achieved so far and can’t wait to see it all come to fruition on screen with our star-studded cast.”
The series is created and executive produced by Michael Robert Johnson. Also serving as executive producers are James Norton and Kitty Kaletsky for Rabbit Track Pictures, Baltasar Kormákur for RVK Studios, Robert Taylor for The Development Partnership, Dave Clarke and Richard Halliwell for Shepherd Content, Ed Clarke, Robert Jones, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and CBS Studios’ Lindsey Martin.
Kormákur will direct the premiere episode and, as executive producer, will steer the creative across the series. The BBC has acquired broadcasting rights for the series on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the United Kingdom. The series will be distributed outside of this market by Paramount Global Content Distribution.
Norton is represented by The Artists Partnership, WME and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole; Coster-Waldau is represented by UTA abd Sloane Offer Weber

Don't let King Phantom get bored or he will do meaningless things
Danny got bored and decided to have a tennis competition, even though he had no idea how to play Tennis and had never held a racket in his life. He thought it would be fun.
He joined Dan because incredibly he knew how to play tennis (he was also quite fed up with Danny's presence, but he didn't have many options since the halfa had promised him his freedom if he won), and his opponents were Jazz and Dani.
In a very short time Danny got tired of losing. Clockwork suggested him to get new players to practice, and he took it seriously. Maybe he would have to look for superheroes to practice with.
He abused his Ghost King powers and transported the Justice League to the Realms to, you guessed it, play tennis. He explained that he and Dan would be their opponents in the final round, and if they didn't win, Dan would be free.
Dan was quick to explain that he was a prisoner of war after destroying a universe, but the King promised his freedom if he won (which wasn't entirely a lie), and wished them luck, commenting that perhaps he would visit their universe next.
Jazz and Dani sighed at their brothers' behavior; Dan would visit to annoy someone, though he surely wouldn't do anything, and Danny didn't even know how to play tennis but somehow made all the heroes panic. It was pretty obvious that they were both playing.
After this interaction John Constantine wondered what the fuck was wrong with the universe. Was the balance of his world really tied to a hyperactive teenager and his weird family?

I was already excited about this "King & Conqueror" miniseries as this story of William the Conqueror and Harold of Wessex has never been adapted before like this and with Nikolaj Coster Waldau and James Norton playing them but now we've got the rest of the main cast and they've got a lot of great actors attached!!! 😀 First being a fan of "Rings of Power" and "The Crown" so awesome to see Joseph Mawle and Luther Ford are in this. Then they've also added Eddie Marsan, Emily Beecham, Clémence Poésy, and many more. Can't wait to watch this!!!

Targaryen Family Tree
“Aegon Targaryen himself, strangely, was as much an enigma to his contemporaries as to us […] The whole realm waited anxiously to see where Aegon would move next.”

Previously we featured a post about Nikolaj Coster-Waldau having a leading role in the upcoming historical series King and Conqueror.
Now comes news that Nikolaj won't be the only Game of Thrones alum in that series about William of Normandy's big move in 1066.
CBS Studios and the BBC’s period drama series “King & Conqueror” has revealed additional cast members, including “The Crown’s” Luther Ford and “Game of Thrones” actor Joseph Mawle, as it begins production in Iceland. [ ... ] They join the previously announced James Norton as Harold, Earl of Wessex; Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as William, Duke of Normandy; Emily Beecham as Edith Swan-neck, Harold of Wessex’s wife; and Clémence Poésy as Matilda, William of Normandy’s wife. [ ... ] Mawle, who also has a role in “The Rings of Power,” will play Fitzosbern, William’s protector since he was a boy and the closest thing he has to a friend. A grounded and straightforward soldier who has stood beside William his whole life.
Joseph Mawle portrayed Benjen Stark who disappeared during Season 1 but returned in later seasons to come to the rescue of kin.
Benjen Stark and Jaime Lannister may have rubbed elbows when King Robert Baratheon visited Winterfell with his large entourage. But I can't recall, offhand, any interactions between the two.
This is not the first time that two GoT alums will appear together in another series. For example: Kristian Nairn (Hodor) and Joel Fry (Hizdahr zo Loraq) both appeared in Our Flag Means Death.

Watch out, new TTRPG character just dropped: A travelling merchant of the March - extremely likely to die permanently in the first session because "Adventurer,Conqueror, King" pulls zero punches. Still, I call her Felicia and I will cherish all the 3-8 minutes she'll survive.
