I was already excited about this "King & Conqueror" miniseries as this story of William the Conqueror and Harold of Wessex has never been adapted before like this and with Nikolaj Coster Waldau and James Norton playing them but now we've got the rest of the main cast and they've got a lot of great actors attached!!! 😀 First being a fan of "Rings of Power" and "The Crown" so awesome to see Joseph Mawle and Luther Ford are in this. Then they've also added Eddie Marsan, Emily Beecham, Clémence Poésy, and many more. Can't wait to watch this!!!

Are there any period dramas you’re looking forward to in 2024?
Hiya,
I will split this into two lists.
Returning Shows:
Being a Penelope girl I am looking forward to Bridgerton Season Three for what I call my soft period drama fix.
I also thoroughly enjoyed Marie Antoinette for what it was so looking forward to the show returning for a second season and how that goes.
Vikings Valhalla season two felt very stale for me apart from Godwin and Emma (oh and Cnut but he needs to be a leading man IMHO), I am waiting with trepidation if it delivers in its final season which I think is a waste because I wanted to see it go to 1066.
The Serpent Queen do I need to say anything more, that show was a f**king hoot and produced by The Hunger Games sequels and prequels director (who also directed Britney's Slave 4 U video btw) it met my expectations.
Being a Tudor girlie I have to obligatory say Wolf Hall but in my honest opinion only for new portrayals of Anne of Cleves and Kathryn Howard (I am not a Thomas Cromwell girlie).
New Projects:
Firebrand being the #1 Catherine Parr girlie I cannot wait to see a new production of her and how they handle her story. I am also looking forward to a younger Catherine than what has previously been portrayed.
King and Conqueror, it is a new show with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as William the Conqueror and James Norton as Harold, Earl Of Wessex during 1066 (so answering my Vikings: Valhalla wishes) produced by CBS and BBC (CBS owns Showtime). No official release date yet but I am into it. X
My Lady Jane, now Queen Jane Grey has become a fast favourite of mine so anything with her in it I am there.
Dick Turpin with Noel Fielding as Dick, now the Horrible Histories fan in me is squealing (why no Matt Baynton though?).
Mary and George, I feel the Tumblr girlies are going to go miles with this and I just want to see what it is about y'know be part of the fun.
Thanks for the ask!.

Previously we featured a post about Nikolaj Coster-Waldau having a leading role in the upcoming historical series King and Conqueror.
Now comes news that Nikolaj won't be the only Game of Thrones alum in that series about William of Normandy's big move in 1066.
CBS Studios and the BBC’s period drama series “King & Conqueror” has revealed additional cast members, including “The Crown’s” Luther Ford and “Game of Thrones” actor Joseph Mawle, as it begins production in Iceland. [ ... ] They join the previously announced James Norton as Harold, Earl of Wessex; Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as William, Duke of Normandy; Emily Beecham as Edith Swan-neck, Harold of Wessex’s wife; and Clémence Poésy as Matilda, William of Normandy’s wife. [ ... ] Mawle, who also has a role in “The Rings of Power,” will play Fitzosbern, William’s protector since he was a boy and the closest thing he has to a friend. A grounded and straightforward soldier who has stood beside William his whole life.
Joseph Mawle portrayed Benjen Stark who disappeared during Season 1 but returned in later seasons to come to the rescue of kin.
Benjen Stark and Jaime Lannister may have rubbed elbows when King Robert Baratheon visited Winterfell with his large entourage. But I can't recall, offhand, any interactions between the two.
This is not the first time that two GoT alums will appear together in another series. For example: Kristian Nairn (Hodor) and Joel Fry (Hizdahr zo Loraq) both appeared in Our Flag Means Death.

Conquered: The Last Children of Anglo-Saxon England
There are many books, both scholarly and popular, that discuss one of the most seminal events in English history: the Norman Conquest of 1066. Perspectives of the Anglo-Saxons, the French, the Normans, and the various populations living in Wales and Scotland are all available for perusal. Recent historical studies of this time period have provided opinions and viewpoints that were once ignored. As history has often shown, it is the viewpoint of the victorious side in a war that usually dominates recordings, and that of the defeated side is lost or purposefully suppressed. Eleanor Parker's book provides a platform for a subtopic under the Norman Conquest that has rarely been explored: what happened to the children of critical Anglo-Saxon families and royalties who were uprooted, disinherited, imprisoned, and hunted down after the Conquest.
Eleanor Parker's book provides a platform for a subtopic under the Norman Conquest that has rarely been explored...
The book's Introduction provides important background information on how Anglo-Norman elites were careful when integrating aspects of Anglo-Saxon society and life into their reign as well as suppressing other cultural and religious observances of the conquered people. Eleanor Parker indicates that intermarriage with aristocratic Anglo-Saxon women, for instance, was key for Anglo-Norman elites to legitimize their claims over English territories. The subsequent five chapters of the book focus on the specific stories of Anglo-Saxon individuals and families and their reactions to their reduced or eliminated status in the new Anglo-Norman society after 1066. Chapter One tells the story of England’s most illustrious rebel and hero Hereward the Wake, who led a guerrilla campaign against the Normans in the Fens in Eastern England. Chapter Two focuses on Margaret of Scotland. She was the sister of Edgar Aetheling, the last surviving direct heir to the English throne. After fleeing to Scotland, Margaret married Malcolm III and became an influential queen. Chapter Three contains a fascinating story. It talks about how the lives of the nine grandchildren of Godwine, the late Earl of Wessex and husband to Gytha Thorkelsdóttir, were virtually wiped out overnight due to the events in 1066. Their stories of exile, rebellion, and marriage are documented by Parker's engaging writing style for readers interested in following the fortunes of Harold Godwineson and his extended family.

Can't wait to watch this!!! 😀 Nikolaj will play William the Conqueror while James is playing Harold II, the Earl of Wessex. It'll start filming next year to air on the BBC in the UK and possibly Paramount+ in the US (though it says Paramount is selling it even here in the US so it might go to a different streamer/network instead). More cast will be announced soon too.
ETA: Adding on from James' Instagram post this is the first time this part of history and the Battle of Hastings has been told to this scale. It's an 8 episode miniseries too.

CBS Studios today announced new eight-part historical drama series King and Conqueror starring James Norton (Little Women, Mr. Jones, Happy Valley) as Harold, Earl of Wessex and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones, Mama, Oblivion) as William, Duke of Normandy.
Written by Michael Robert Johnson (Sherlock Holmes, The Frankenstein Chronicles) and with the opening episode directed by Baltasar Kormákur (Trapped, Everest, Adrift), King and Conqueror will premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
James Norton will also executive produce through his production company, Rabbit Track Pictures and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau will direct an episode and also serves as executive producer. Filming is set to take place in Iceland next year. The series is produced by The Development Partnership, Rabbit Track Pictures, Shepherd Content, RVK Studios and CBS Studios in association with the BBC.
King and Conqueror is the story of a clash that defined the future of a country – and a continent – for a thousand years, the roots of which stretch back decades and extend out through a pair of interconnected family dynasties, struggling for power across two countries and a raging sea. Harold of Wessex and William of Normandy were two men destined to meet at the Battle of Hastings in 1066; two allies with no design on the British throne, who found themselves forced by circumstance and personal obsession into a war for possession of its crown.

The trades "forgot" to mention Michael Robert Johnson also wrote the epic bomb movie Pompeii with Kit Harington. Ncw sure knows how to pick them. 😅 Another 🚩is this series will be on Paramount+ 🤢
I didn't even know this was a thing but yeah anon the fact the writer is the same dude who did Pompeii doesn't inspire much confidence tbh. Of course it's not going to be referenced as being one of Mr. Johnson's highlights in these articles considering what a flop that movie was. They obviously don't want people to know he was involved with that mess lol. Sherlock Holmes story wasn't good but was still a huge success thanks to Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law.....never heard of Frankenstein Chronicles.
James Norton though.....I really liked him in Death Comes to Pemberley and The Nevers.
Nikolaj does have a bad habit of choosing poor projects especially after GoT but this story looks like it actually has potential? The main problem here is the writer....crazy how CBS didn't hire a more acclaimed writer for this so yeah this is a case of wait and see but idk.
Oh yeah and being on Paramount Plus will probably limit it's audience here in the states....don't know about the BBC over in the UK since not even it's biggest show Doctor Who can score big ratings anymore.

I always think that Charles suggested the Wessex title arrangement to Harry (as part of his slim down monarchy plan), and Harry agreed, and this all happened during Golden Jubilee, so long before Meg came. It tracked with what Harold said during several interviews. Then Meg came, threw tantrum about titles, probably asking Harry why Will's kids got Prince title right away and theirs didn't, and most likely they asked for new LP for Archie. Then they sulked and didn't use titles for Archie. This is the point the Palace should intervene. As the wise @helenaaurellia said, there's no point being a Royal but acting like regular people. They should put Archie as Earl (and Lili as Lady) on the website and official announcements of birth & christening, and told their parents to use the titles on birth certificates. Because it's super weird, grand children of future monarch without titles, and didn't look right. If the Palace insisted on using the subsidiary titles on the website at the very least, the public would know that those kids have titles but their parents chose not to use them. Then the Oprah stuff wouldn't hit so hard. And Charles could now say that they would continue to use the Earl/Lady/Lord titles instead of Prince/Princess, as agreed with Harry on the year of Golden Jubilee and because they live outside UK. Instead we get all this mess; and while other RFs have made hard decisions to slim down their monarchies, BRF now looks like moving backwards without clear planning. And I really wish they stop doing the drip drip of info via sources briefing for the coronation stuff and housing plan. Just make clear statements about housing, who gets what house, and make clear already about invitations - dress codes - and other important stuff (not just about the music and Holy Oil).
I really have nothing to add because yeah, you're absolutely correct.
Harry probably went to the Queen and said, "Well, Granny, they're going to be prince/ss anyway, so can't you just do it a bit early?" and her saying no is what pissed off Meghan.

🇫🇷 Le Mont-Saint-Michel (pronounced [mɔ̃ sɛ̃ mi.ʃɛl]; English: Saint Michael's Mount) is an island and commune in Normandy, France. It is in the Manche department. It is located about one kilometre (0.6 miles) from the country's northwestern coast. It is at the mouth of the Couesnon River near Avranches. It is 247 acres (100 ha) in size and it has a population of 44 (2009). People that live there are called the Montois. The island has had strategic fortifications since ancient times. The name Mont-Saint-Michel comes from the monastery built there in the eighth century AD. The way in which the town is built is an example of how feudal society worked. At the top there is God, the abbey and monastery. Below this, there are the great halls, then stores and houses. At the bottom, outside the walls, there are the houses of fishermen and farmers.
Mont-Saint-Michel is one of France's most famous landmarks. The island and its bay are part of the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Every year, more than 3 million people visit it.
History
Mont-Saint-Michel was an Armorican stronghold of Gallo-Roman culture in the sixth and seventh centuries. In the seventh century, the Franks took the mount. From about the fifth to the eighth century, Mont-Saint-Michel was part of a region called Neustria. At the start of the ninth century, it was an important place in the marches of Neustria.
Inside the walls of Mont-Saint-Michel.
Before the eighth century, the island was called Mont Tombe (Latin: tumba). The Catholic Church built the first religious building in the eighth century, and the mount became Mont-Saint-Michel. According to legend, the Archangel Michael appeared in 708 to St. Aubert, the bishop of Avranches. The angel told him to build a church on the mount. Aubert didn't listen to the angel until Michael burned a hole in the bishop's skull with his finger.
The king of the Franks could not defend his kingdom against the attacks of the Vikings. The king agreed to give the Cotentin peninsula and the Avranchin, including Mont-Saint-Michel, to the Bretons in the 867 Treaty of Compiègne. For a short time, the mount belonged to the Bretons. In effect, these lands and Mont-Saint-Michel never belonged to the duchy of Brittany. They remained separate bishoprics from the newly created Breton archbishopric of Dol. When Rollo named Franco as archbishop of Rouen, the diocese of Rouen took the lands and the mount. They became part of Normandy once again, but not officially.
The mount became strategically important again in 933 when William "Long Sword" (the Duke of Normandy) annexed the Cotentin Peninsula from the weakened Dukes of Brittany. This made the mount part of Normandy officially. This is shown in the Bayeux Tapestry, which commemorates (helps remember) the Norman conquest of England in 1066. The tapestry shows Harold, Earl of Wessex helping two Norman knights from the quicksand around Mont-Saint-Michel during a battle with Conan II, Duke of Brittany. Norman dukes paid for the development of the abbey in the following centuries. It became a good example of Norman architecture.
In 1067, the monastery of Mont-Saint-Michel gave its support to Duke William of Normandy in his claim to the throne of England. William gave houses and grounds on the English side of the Channel as a reward. These included a small island off the southwestern coast of Cornwall. It became a Norman priory named St Michael's Mount of Penzance. It looks similar to Mont-Saint-Michel.
During the Hundred Years' War, the English made many attacks on the island. They were not able to take it due to the abbey's very good fortifications. The English first attacked the mount in 1423, and then again in 1433. Thomas Scalles was the leader of the English army. Scalles left two wrought iron bombards when he stopped his attack. They are still there today. They are known as les Michelettes. The resistance at Mont-Saint-Michel gave hope to the French, especially Joan of Arc.
Cannons left by Thomas Scalles at Mont-Saint-Michel on 17 June 1434. Currently (June 2013), only the second cannon, the one closer to the wall, is shown. It is inside the entrance to the mount's outer wall.
When Louis XI of France founded the Order of Saint Michael in 1469, he wanted the church of Mont-Saint-Michel to become the chapel for the Order. However, it was far from Paris so this was not possible.
The wealth and influence of the abbey helped other foundations, for example St Michael's Mount in Cornwall. However, it started to become less popular as a centre of pilgrimage due to the Reformation. At the time of the French Revolution, there were almost no monks living there. The republicans closed the abbey. It became a prison. At first, this was to hold clerical enemies of the French republic. Later, there were also important political prisoners at the mount. In 1836, famous figures, such as Victor Hugo, started a campaign to restore the mount. The prison closed in 1863, and the mount became a historic monument in 1874. Mont-Saint-Michel and its bay became UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1979. The factors for listing included cultural, historical, and architectural importance, as well as man-made and natural beauty.
Plan of the mount
In the 11th century, Richard II of Normandy chose an Italian architect called William de Volpiano to build the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel. Volpiano had already built the Abbey of Fécamp, in Normandy. He designed the Romanesque church of the abbey. He chose to place the transept crossing at the top of the mount. He also built a lot of crypts and chapels below the ground. These are to support building above, because it is very heavy. Today, Mont-Saint-Michel has a church of Romanesque style.
Robert de Thorigny was a great supporter of Henry II of England. Henry was also Duke of Normandy at this time. Thorigny made the structure of the buildings stronger. He also built the main façade of the church in the 12th century. In 1204, the Breton Guy de Thouars, a friend of the King of France, attacked the mount with an army. He set fire to the village and killed lots of people. However, he had to retreat (leave) under the powerful walls of the abbey. The fire extended to the buildings, and the roofs burnt. Philip Augustus, Thorigny's friend, was unhappy about the cruel actions and the destruction. He offered Abbot Jourdain some money to build a new Gothic-style architectural set. The abbot added the refectory (dining room) and cloister.
Charles VI added big fortifications to the abbey-mount. He also added building towers and courtyards, and he made the ramparts stronger.
