i am not actively in the middle of anything right now., so i'll use this space to recommend some stuff >:) the last book i read was terry pratchett's 'i shall wear midnight' as i am still sort of, kind of, working on my full discworld re/read from 2021 lmao. it's so fucking good i've loved tiffany my whole life.

a fanfic i am patiently waiting for the next update of is the extremely excellent "sunrise, sunset" by otterlylost (akkayan time loop au fic, mind the tags but like. read it!!!! read it i'm begging). another small rec for "a shirt to make him shiver" by kiranokira (who uses tumblr at user broccolination) which is an Extremely Funny winteam fic about crop tops and unbridled lust

it confuses the hell out of me how Tumblr out of all places harbors most negativity toward BMF. situation it's much better now though, but the early period and before the show aired was nothing but spite an vitriol filling the tags. on the bright side, pretty much every other platform is head over heels for BMF, especially Reddit. they're usually critical af but BMF seems to be universally praised. anyways, I'm beyond excited for the remaining eps, and here's hoping for a strong finale so this show becomes one of the often recommended ones 🙏

On BMF getting more negativity on Tumblr than other places:

I thiiiiink it's because Tumblr has an especially high North American/European user base, and that's where the majority of the Krist hate seems to come from. What people still point to (the IG story, the rape filter joke, the "I don't want to watch Singto specifically kiss other men because this is fanservice on a variety TV show that people are going to quote out of context as me saying I don't like watching men kiss" thing) are either debunked or happened years ago, but when interfans arrived in droves in 2020, they kicked up old news like it was brand new and passed around hearsay like it was fact.

I mean, even I've learned new things since I made my post and thread about Krist back in September. For one, GMM didn't arrange his press conference in 2020 to address the issues. Krist did. Even though he'd already apologized multiple times over the years for things he never repeated, he still wanted to take accountability because of the amount of attention interfans were bringing to it. Part of that press conference was Krist even saying he'd never make excuses for what he's done and that he'll apologize as long as he's asked to.

The first(?) apology Krist made for the IG story was long, long ago, one I can't even find a translation for, that's how long ago it was. But Krist's long-time fans said that someone did translate it, but their English wasn't strong, so interfans picked apart their translation as if Krist's apology was lacking. (It's like how some interfans criticized Win in Between Us for being forceful because the subtitles originally said "kiss me" when what he actually said in Thai was "can I kiss you?" Interfans who don't speak Thai just make assumptions based on translations sometimes and it's part of my villain origin story.) Again, I don't have the apology to hand, but apparently one part of it was Krist saying something like, "I responded without thinking of how it would look. As a Y actor, I don't have those kinds of bigoted thoughts. This is my home, and I'm very proud of and supportive of the community that's raised me and cared for me," and the fan translation apparently paraphrased all of that into something like, "As a BL actor, of course I'm not homophobic." So like. Even when he's apologized, interfans have historically found a way to throw rocks at him anyway, so it gets exhausting to see people casually calling him homophobic because Melanie in Minnesota saw a screenshot of an IG story on Twitter and then made a list of six problematic BL actors you should definitely avoid because they skin babies and punt puppies into volcanoes.

On BMF being great:

I'm so excited for the last three episodes. \:D/

I'm so proud of Krist and Gawin for the work they've done up until now. It's wild to think about the amount of information they had to keep in mind as they were filming. Because, like, series already film out of order, but they also had to keep in mind different timelines of the same characters out of order. The fact that you can see not only Kawi's growth but everyone else's as well so fluidly and consistently over the episodes so far says a great deal about the quality of the production, I think. The directing, the writing, the acting. All of it is really, truly phenomenal.

Aaahhhh why is it only Tuesday. :'(

ANYWAY thank you, Anon! Sorry for the rant about Krist. I'm just tired of seeing him get so much hate for years on end when he's such a loving and giving person who's been a vocal queer ally since SOTUS. Not just during Pride, either. He really has been deeply misconstrued by interfans at large, and I just hope the people who've made up their minds about hating him (and the ones who've made their hate so public they're too stubborn to admit they misread him) will just learn to ignore him and stop tormenting him. He's already suffered panic attacks and depression as a result of the constant abuse, and it's repulsive that anyone thinks that's acceptable to do.

I do! Okay, lemme try to assemble an eclectic mix and hopefully introduce a variety of writers and older fics that new fans might not have seen yet. I’m not caught up on all the newest fics (a lovely state of being to be in after two and a half years of refreshing the WinTeam tag every five minutes and finding one or maaaybe two a week). But you’re free to browse my bookmarks on AO3 for all my favorites.

bruises fade by @oopsimafannow

He can't even make his tongue form the shape for yes, but it's all he wants to say (it's all he wants to say out loud). Team is sucking a bruise on the inside of Win's thigh – he has, at some point, lifted Win's leg over his shoulder to give him access, tilting Win further into the cold metal with edges that bite into his shoulder blades.

The writing in this is some of the best and most visceral smut I've read in this or any fandom. I love when sex is written in a kind of matter-of-fact way that gives readers an idea of the sensations the characters are feeling. I'd read anything pinkish wrote, and I have two of their fics open in tabs. (One is for BounPrem's Cutie Pie characters WinTop, so I'm thrilled that exists.)

Course Correction by @nejineeee

“Did someone say you suck at kissing?” Win asked. He gripped Team’s hips in both hands. “Who have you been kissing, Team?” He sounded like he might start chewing rocks if Team didn’t answer immediately. “No one, no one, calm down,” Team said with a laugh. “I was just curious.”

I read most of this on a train in Japan and experienced a state of pure bliss the entire time. The characterization is spot-on, but so is the pacing and the comedic timing and phrasing. This is my favorite WinTeam fic at the moment, and I highly, highly recommend it. <3

Always Choose the Same by blackrose9212

“Win, do you want to talk about Tea—” Dean gets cut off as Manow sprints over to their table, throwing herself down into the seat across from them. She’s even more made up than usual today, no doubt seeing Pruk later. “P’Win!” she yells. Win raises his eyebrows, gives her the best look he can to say that he’s less than three feet away from her. “Oh. Sorry.” She giggles. “I need you to come with me. Right now.”

This writer was one of the first around in early UWMA fandom, and I fell in love with all their fics. The clever, snarky way they write Win and Team's narrative POVs always makes me smile, and the build-up to emotion is lovely. If they write more, I'll dive on it in a second.

The Gift Is Your Voice by Ume_otyaduke0525

“Ah…o-one more time.” He felt Win’s hand tense. His face drew closer, his hot breath glazing Team’s lips. “Team.” The second time was sweet and enraptured.

This writer is an extremely prolific Japanese WinTeam fic writer, and I loved her work in Japanese so much that I offered to translate this one into English. The premise is really cute, with Team dreaming about a younger Win who calls him "phi", and I hope I did the translation justice. If you read Japanese or want to practice, they have some of their other work up on AO3 as well.

When [Team] wakes up in the morning his mother is at the door, rubbing at her neck. Win is still snuggled into Team's shoulder, so he untangles himself as softly as he can, praying he doesn't wake. He oddly feels like he's been caught, the way his mother looks at him as she stays by the door.

Note: This fic was written before we knew anything specific about Team's parents.

This fic has a fascinating premise: Team has to attend his father's funeral, and Win goes with him. It's written so beautifully and delicately, I just fell so thoroughly in love with it when I read it the first time. It's one of my all-time favorites. It's just so atmospheric and lovely.

“Just so we're clear, I'm not cuddling with you at night," Win declares before Dean has finished setting his suitcase on the floor. Dean looks up at him, completely unfazed. “Okay.” It’s… Dean. Win didn’t realize just how much he's missed him, and he feels a wave of homesickness that leaves a scratch at the back of his throat.

This one is set while Win is studying abroad in London. Dean comes to visit him. Pollitt's love for writing Win and Dean's friendship really shines here, and they truly capture that playful snarkiness while never losing that distinctive and undeniable fondness they have for each other. (The end is incredible and made me tear up.)

New York State of Mind by iamtheenemy

“Oh, Team,” Pharm said, interrupting his frenzied thoughts and shattering any hope Team had that it was all a misunderstanding. “This is P’Win, P’Dean’s best friend, the one who was interning for his family’s company in England. P’Win, this is my friend, Team.” Team, Win mouthed at him, his eyes dancing with delight. Team barely held back a groan.

I was obsessed with this fic as it was posting; I could hardly wait for each chapter. This is a marvelous AU in which Win was studying abroad in England the whole time, and the first time he meets Team is on a plane to New York for DeanPharm's wedding. It's exactly what you'd expect and so much more.

Wrapped Up by @faandomcentral

“We can do better than that,” Team prompts, both hands now gripping Win’s hips, pulling him back in time with his movements. “A little louder, hia.” “Fuck!” Win spits when Team reaches and wraps his fingers around Win’s aching erection.

TEAMWIN. TOP TEAM. And hot Top Team. Bratty Top Team. Blair's another writer who absolutely nails what works about good smut. And the premise alone, while simple, just sets you up for a memorable experience.

Team moves his hand again to settle over Win’s, and when he thinks he can control his voice, he murmurs, “Did you have a nightmare?” Win’s expression looks pained, and he hesitates over it, but he does admit it. “Yeah,” he mumbles, clearing his throat after the word comes out scraping. “I did.”

For years, I wanted to know more about Win's vulnerabilities as a character. We didn't really get to see many of them in the existing parts of the novel or in UWMA, so fics like this that explore Win's trauma, Win's potential vulnerability to nightmares, it's a gift. And this fic captures the Win we know so well while adding onto his character in such an achingly real way. Utterly beautiful.

Dominoes by dragons_and_angels

"Team," Win said, making sure his lips brushed against Team's skin as he said the word. Team shivered and Win wondered if he could ever stop smiling. "Want to wake up yet?" "No." Team shook his head and then turned Win's head so he could kiss him. "Waking up is bad," Team murmured against Win's lips.

This is pure, soft domestic bliss. Win helps Team out with a chaotic morning, and it's just everything I love about them as characters condensed in a quick look into their day. It's absolutely charming the way only WinTeam can be.

“You’re in pre-heat then,” P’Tul said, leaning forward. His nostrils flared as he inhaled deeply. It wasn’t rude per se, but it wasn’t the soberest thing to do. Win’s grip on Team’s hip tightened. “Tul,” Win growled. P’Tul stood upright, settling back into his sandals. “I’m not going into heat,” Team said again.

For me, omegaverse is usually just fun smut that I read occasionally, but in order to be taken seriously, the story has to go above and beyond in some very specific ways. I'm not a fan of omegaverse worldbuilding that leans on secondary genders as a substitute for the struggle of gender roles within heteronormative culture. This fic's worldbuilding is so fascinating. There are so many tiny nuances and details mentioned in passing that make the world feel authentic. Also, Win and Team are both just…………so stupid and so in love they miss obvious details in a way that's delightful instead of frustrating. Even if you're not the biggest fan of omegaverse usually, I recommend this as an exception to prove how good it can be when it's in the right hands.

Hi friend since you are resident KitKit expert can you possibly fact check a ‘fact’ I can no longer trace back. I feel like I read it somewhere but I might have totally bastardized it in my head but is the whole pink milk/pink drink association with BL because of Arthit? Or is it a thai gay culture thing that was then featured prominently in BLs? I know Arthit likes those drinks but other than that it’s just static in my head.

Okay so! I didn’t know this, so I asked a friend who wrote a whole book about BL culture and used SOTUS as a pretty significant framing device, and they confirmed that SOTUS kicked it off. In their words, “2 Moons consolidated it,” and then it went on to become a BL staple.

Personally, I always liked the pink milk for Arthit’s character because it’s that early confirmation that he’s more than he seems. Especially since the series begins with him posturing so incredibly hard, finding out he’s a devotee of a pink drink is a pretty cute way to hint at both his sweet nature and his sexuality.

So yeah! Seems like Arthit made pink milk into a bit of a queer symbol. :’)

I definitely haven’t earned my Krist degree, but asks like this give me more opportunities to learn more, so I appreciate the question! <3

LET'S BEGIN.

• FAVORITE KISS SCENE

I genuinely can't choose between two of them. From the same episode.

FIRST UP:

Team's heel is the star of this shot. Prem is a genius. Even if he didn't do it on purpose, his subconscious is a genius. I know some people didn't like this wide shot and wanted to stay rammed up on their faces, which I totally understand, but I love the wide shot because it introduced me to my good friend Team's Popped Heel.

ALSO.

FUCK?

The panting as they change angles? GEE. ZUSS.

Okay, fine, this one is my favorite. Like, holy shit, to bring this out in episode two was brilliant. There's no, like, "Team was so shaken by his first time, he doesn't know what he really wants." Nope. This is clear attraction.

(The BU specials honestly worried me when I first saw them in 2021 because of how hard they leaned into the weird heteronormative Nooooo I Don't Want to Have Sex with You for I Am and Have a Pure and Chaste Bottom angle, so watching this kiss at, like, 2am while I was in Japan for work reassured me that they weren't going to show Win as, like, some predatory bisexual and Team as stereotypically reluctant. Team's just as into Win.)

That kiss is legendary. They just look like they'll die if they don't make out next to the pool on camera. (Moment of silence for Dean.)

BUT I ALSO WANT TO TALK ABOUT THIS KISS:

Not just "the locker room scene kiss" because 1) they kiss a lot while they're back there, and 2) this one specifically. Look at Team! You can't see his lips (because Win is on them) but you can tell that he's smiling.

And whyyy?

'Cos Win's a menace. <3

I love this whole scene because it doesn't exist in the novel! After their one-night stand in the novel, WinTeam don't kiss again until much, much later. Including this scene really establishes the nature of their physical relationship that, for me, made the upcoming struggle between True Intimacy and Casual Sex all the more turbulent and realistic.

I mean, you've got Team biting his lip, the wrist-pinning, the panting. They're viscerally attracted to each other. This isn't just Win pursuing Team like he does in the last scene of episode one; this establishes interest from both of them. Team followed him in episode one, but he didn't give it much thought there. And he looks kind of like, "……Well, fuck it, I guess."

In episode two, he thinks about it much longer, and his expression is

much more determined. He wasn't caught off-guard this time. Win asked for consent, he got it, they kissed, and then Win gave him space to decide if he wanted more. Team could have easily left! He already had his backpack, and he had his own car to get home.

Win, my Green Flag Son. <3

I think this was one of the more challenging scenes for Prem based on comments he made early in filming, and I can honestly see why. Kisses are difficult to film. You have to think about technical aspects like what the camera can see while balancing the authenticity of what you're doing, and you're working with another person, so even if you're doing fine, your partner might not be. Like, I'm obviously biased toward WinTeam and BounPrem, but I genuinely think this episode has the most realistic kissing I've seen in any series. Because they both look starving for it. They don't just mash their mouths together and wait for the scene to cut. The heavy breathing, where they're looking, all the little details create a really nuanced atmosphere to the scene.

I don't know that I'd call New a great director from an audience's perspective (especially if he was the one in the editing room for this series), but he's undeniably fantastic with actors. Filming a scene with this much raw honesty and physical passion could have been wildly awkward, but Boun and Prem are both visibly comfortable and that allows them to show the best of their abilities. Award-winning kiss, mwah.

• FAVORITE CUDDLY SCENE

OKAY SO. There are so many? SO MANY OF THEM in Between Us. And I'm very grateful for that because cuddling is my favorite. So it might be surprising that in the vast array of options I picked something so quick, but it's this:

It's only seconds long, but there's something especially soft about WinTeam asleep together on Valentine's Day. Win's arm around Team all bundled up because Team runs cold, Team tucked into Win's side, the two of them all peaceful before Tul ruins their night. :'(

Also, like, poor View. Win probably called him like, "Go next door, our brother is unconscious," and View just like, "How…did you know? HIA, ARE YOU PSYCHIC."

Like, it's the implication that this is their new normal. They know what they are to each other now, and they're happy and safe with each other. I'm going to cry I love them so much.

• FAVORITE ROMANTIC SCENE

Maybe it's an odd choice for this category but honestly, this scene:

For multiple reasons!

Because I think it's the first time Win actually decides to rely on Team, which is something Team's made clear that he wants.

Because I think it's the first time they're acting as true equals on an emotional level. Team wants to know Win better than anyone, and this is Win letting him see what he hides from literally everyone else in his life.

And I think my definition of romantic has changed as I've gotten older, but to me there's nothing more romantic than trusting your moments of fragility and vulnerability to someone.

• FAVORITE "TEASE" SCENE

Hands down this one:

Because as much as I love cuddly, sweet WinTeam, at their core they're a feral pair of loud dumbasses. <3

just saw a vid abt prem thinking between us was the last bl he’d act in then they announced a new bounprem series which im assuming is the vampire project but would that mean that it would be the last for him too?

Short answer: no idea!

If I'm remembering correctly, Prem said he and Boun had Between Us and WinTeam to look forward to for so long that when Between Us ended, he felt aimless without that massive, life-altering dream to strive for. I assume that after you've been at the center of such anticipation for so long, other projects aren't as appealing. Especially when the other projects they had outside WinTeam were things like EvenSun (barely a plot) or 7 Project (poorly written) or LongKhong (shallow side roles) or Cutie Pie and You Never Eat Alone (cameo appearances).

Throughout all of that, Prem had Team in his heart for three years, and then he had to let him go back into the book. He was probably a little lost-at-sea, and Boun said he felt similar to Prem.

I can't remember where the interview is, but I remember last winter Prem said that he talked to Boun and New about how he felt and the result of that conversation was him deciding to stay. Then he said in a different interview in spring that I also can't find (Twitter's search function is even more of a mess now) that he's happy with what he's doing right now and if that changes, he'll reevaluate.

My own personal perception is that Boun has been obsessed with having a vampire series for about as long as Prem has known him, and they've been partners for almost five years now, so Prem probably got some of his passion for acting back by seeing how committed and excited Boun was to do this series. Not only that, but their vampire series is an original concept with an original script that they had direct input on and collaborated together on, so it's not just a random project. It's a passion project.

What BounPrem may do after the vampire project is create their own company like YinWar have done. I think Boun's fame has gone above what Wabi Sabi has the resources to support, and if he and Prem enjoy working together as much as they seem to, it might benefit them most to create their own path, produce their own series, and then when they're older and less interested in appearing on camera, produce series for other actors.

But it's all kind of up in the air right now, I guess! What I do feel confident in is that they're happy with each other and excited for their next project. Whatever comes after that is up to them. <3

Did Win ever try to distance himself from Team in the novel?

No, he didn’t!

In the novel, he takes Team to his parents’ house, which he’ll also do in the series. They talk about it a little bit, but the focus is mainly on how Win takes care of Team. The narrative doesn’t really spend much time on how it affected Win mentally, which I really always hoped the series would do. And IT WILL!

The novel and the series are probably going to diverge pretty dramatically at this point, I’d say, at least in terms of WinTeam’s relationship dynamic and pacing.

Their relationship in the novel isn’t as clearly communicated as it is in the series, so it makes sense that they’ve been developing feelings faster and more deeply than their novel counterparts. Like, Team’s main source of confusion with Win in the novel basically ended in this episode.

The song Win and Team are listening to in the beginning of the episode seems to be a reference to the song Team plays for Win in the novel called, “What Am I to You?” Later, when he’s in Win’s bathroom, Team tells himself that Win must treat everyone the way he’s treating Team. That’s basically the whole crux of Team’s internal conflict when it comes to his relationship with Win in the novel: Team doesn’t know where he or especially Win stands emotionally.

In the series, however, Win and Team start out with clear communication, so it makes sense that they wouldn’t suffer from the same struggles as they did in the novel. In this episode, Team outright asks Win to be exclusive for the time being, and Win explicitly agrees. Then, when Team tries to tell himself he’s not special, Win tells him ten minutes later that he is treating Team differently, but that he doesn’t know how he feels yet. And he asks for time that Team is willing to give him. (They’re running circles around their novel selves.)

I really, really like that they’ve chosen to incorporate Win’s fear of being alone into the drowning incident. Because his trauma could go so much deeper if he spirals for too long. A lot of almost-couples at their current stage don’t think about their partner’s mortality, but Win is probably going to be extra aware of it for a very long time. He’s the only reason Team is alive, and he almost didn’t make it in time. In the most recent chapter (16) of Hemp Rope, Team’s narration mentions that while on holiday, Win forbade Team from swimming alone because he doesn’t trust him yet. So I really, really like that the series seems to be leaning hard into how this affected him as well as Team. (They definitely needed to give Win more to do for Boun’s sake if not the larger narrative itself. He doesn’t really struggle too much in the novel.)

I’ve been really happy with the series’ treatment of Win so far. He’s never had anything to lose before. And he’s given everything he has to Team so willingly and so quickly, it makes sense that he’d panic now and back away. Because it’s not just that Team might die—he will, eventually. And since, as Wan said, Win has a habit of overthinking, it’s entirely possible that he’s dreading the long-term, too. He knows he’ll lose Team one way or another someday, voluntarily or not, and in the immediate aftermath watching Team nearly die in front of him, of course he’d think he can save his heart by shutting Team out. It’s a trauma response.

Aaaaand I think that means we finally have our answer to what this scene is:

Ooh fun question! Short guess: GMMTV wanted KristSingto under one manager, and Yui’s employed by GMMTV while Jane isn’t.

Longer, ramblier guess: I don’t have official information, but GMMTV seems to be keeping their branded pairs together under one manager these days. Jane (Singto’s former manager) was a contractor, not a GMMTV employee. If I’m remembering correctly, he was a makeup artist originally? A stylist? And in 2016, GMMTV was much less structured than it is now, plus they weren’t going all-out for BL the way they are now, so it didn’t matter or make sense for Krist and Singto to be under the same manager. So Singto had Jane, and Krist had Yui, and their careers went in very different directions accordingly.

As I understand it, managers in Thailand are like agents in the U.S., so they have a lot of sway with the direction of their artists’ career. Krist’s always been with Yui, and I think she’s considered a Company Woman in that she seems to have a strong understanding of what GMMTV wants to do, so she guided Krist’s work accordingly. GMMTV likely wanted him to be a TV-focused lakorn hero, so she steered him that way. He also wanted to experiment in front of the camera more than Singto (who’s always been more interested in becoming a photographer/director). Krist’s had a lot of success with various things from lakorns to musicals to hosting to singing, and he’s getting better and better at everything he’s done.

Meanwhile, Jane seemed to want to focus on getting Singto more exposure with younger audiences than Yui and GMMTV were aiming for with Krist, so Jane steered Singto toward younger, more internet-oriented audiences with series like He’s Coming to Me and Friendzone. And because Jane is a contractor, Singto was able to take Jane with him when he let his contract with GMMTV expire and went freelance.

Buuuut when Singto decided to re-sign with GMMTV this year, he was coming back to a much more sophisticated system. BL is where the money is now. When he left, it was different, but GMMTV is leaning more and more on squeezing money from fans, not just through sponsorships but also through their own merch and concerts and trending on social media. So Singto and Krist really do need to be under the same management for their work together to run as smoothly as possible, and they’re staging a comeback on top of that, so they want someone like Yui who has a strong history with the company and what their goals are.

And then there’s the simple explanation that taking Jane with him probably wasn’t feasible or possible under Singto’s new contract because Jane’s a contractor.

All of this is pure speculation, but based on what I’ve read and heard from others with better information than I have, that’s my guess!

EDIT: This is also probably why Prem and Boun couldn’t bring their former managers with them when they joined GMMTV: the company is probably keeping in-house managers these days. Even though they could 100% use more.

What is your most favourite thing about win x team? If you had to pick one thing? I’m rewatching their story now and I’m slowly melting every time win looks at team 🥹

Oh my god, Anon. Good question.

I think it’s how perfectly they balance that blend of goofy and heartfelt.

Like, Team’s always going to be a sasspot and Win’s always going to tease him, but it’s because both of them like this dynamic they’ve built. Win loves his insouciant brat and Team loves that Win knows him so well he can say one thing and make him blush. Team’s a loudmouth around everyone else, not afraid to stand up to upperclassmen if he thinks they’re abusing their power, and he’s definitely not afraid of or intimidated by Win. He’s just a kid who doesn’t know how to ask for help, and I think Win is subconsciously drawn to that. Especially because Team’s so deferential to him early on, and then as soon as they’ve slept together, Team transforms into this little, “Fine, you’ve seen me vulnerable, so now you’re going to pay for it with eternal sass,” monster whomst Win adores.

Like, in the novel there’s a whole huge section where Win helps Team accept that he needs therapy, and he walks with him and supports him through those early stages where Team’s trying to find the right therapist and figuring out how to tell a stranger things he hasn’t even told Win.

And I just love that Team explicitly rejects Win at first because he sees this, like, open tap of service and effort and energy and he doesn’t want to be just one more person who takes and takes from him and exhausts him and gives nothing back.

Like, ugh, I could go on about them forever. They just hit very specific buttons in my brain and produce all the happy chemicals. :’)

I wanted to ask what your interpretation of that scene when Team cut/hurt his foot and after Win says that "its not an excuse to not train", Team then says "don't worry, I'll be running around in no time" but then Win looks up at him, stands up slowly and then looms over Team with this sort of irritated/fierce/angry look on his face- which to me feel unprovoked- and even Team kind of notices it for a second before his friends come back...

What do you think that was all about?

Do you think Win was angry that Team didn't defend himself by saying he couldn't participate in training and instead brushed off an injury that (objectively) could affect the entire team or (subjectively) shows Win Team's lack of self worth and/or self sabotage??? Or do you think maybe Team reminds him of his nong so he feels kind of angry about the lack of self care? Do you think that was an entirely emotionally detached response and Win is just pissed off Team is sabotaging the team?

OH BOY, ANON, AM I HAPPY YOU ASKED THIS.

I was about to go to sleep but I want to talk about this more.

Okay SO. I've said this elsewhere but after writing WinTeam fic for almost three years based on their unfinished novel and their limited screentime in UWMA, I was fully prepared and excited to accept that canon characterization in their series would likely be different from how I'd seen them and imagined them to be.

This scene was a perfect example of characterization that I didn't expect, and I LOVE THAT!!! It means there's still a lot to explore about these characters and a lot to think about regarding where they're coming from and how their larger character arcs influence each other.

NOW. THE INJURY SCENE.

So, here's my take based on the only episode we have so far.

I think this whole exchange was meant to hint at Win's larger problem when it comes to his interest in Team.

As stated in the synopsis:

Win is a middle child who only knows how to give love but never receives it. He only knows how to treat people equally, making it harder to approach Team.

So at the top of this exchange, Win crouches down and takes Team's injured foot in his hand, intent on helping him. He doesn't hesitate, so I assume he's probably had to do similar things as an older brother and as the club's vice president. For him, this is both his responsibility and a way of showing affection.

But that's what makes this interesting: Win would do this for anyone in his care, and only Win knows his own motivations. It isn't clear to Team or anyone else observing his actions that at this moment, Win is taking care of Team because he's starting to care about Team as a person. From anyone else's perspective, Win's just taking care of a first-year who hurt his foot.

So then we have Team's reaction: "phi, I'm fine," and "my feet are dirty (/bloody, probably)".

Regarding the honorific, we already know that Team will permanently drop "P'Win" after this episode and change to "Hia Win" instead. Culturally, "hia" implies a closer relationship than "phi", so it's significant that Win wants Team to call him that. In the novel, Win tells his younger brother View, "I'm only nice to those who call me 'hia'." So I think it's a pretty strong sign that Win's inviting a closer relationship in the only way he knows how. It's possible that as Win starts to feel more and more drawn to Team, the "phi" honorific is bothering him more and more, too.

Next, I think Team politely telling Win that he doesn't have to touch his bloody foot comes across to Win as Team dismissing his help. And again, I think Win sees this action as one of care, but Team probably sees it as Win just helping him out of obligation. As club president. Because Team's his nong, and his responsibility. So to Team, he's saying, "Hey, you don't have to go out of your way," but to Win, that's essentially saying, "I don't need you."

And Win's whole thing is that he wants to feel wanted.

I think the expression he gives Team is mostly hurt. Because this, caring for people, is all he knows. The only person he's this gentle with is View, who openly and happily relies on him. The fact that Win's trying to do the same thing for someone new, someone outside his family, and that person is rejecting it probably hurts him.

I love that Win just silently goes about this next part. Grabs a bottle, opens it, pours water over the cut. Team hisses, and then Win says this:

I think here he's falling back on what he'd say to any of the members as their club's vice president. Because as much as Win might want it, he and Team aren't close yet, and Win doesn't know how to get to the place he wants to be with Team.

Then my favorite part:

This is quick and subtle, but I love Prem and his eye-acting choices, so I'm going to read into it. I think Team's trying to gauge what Win wants from him because he truly has no idea what Win's deal is at this point. From their first interaction, Win's been kind of a jerk, and Team's been nothing but polite and deferential in return. From Team's perspective, what kind of person must Win come across as?

We know Team's good with people. He made at least five friends (that we saw!!) on his first day of university without hesitation. That's not something a lot of people can do! Team's not shy or introverted. So I wonder if Win is especially frustrating to him because he refuses to treat Team nicely like most people do.

Then he says this, and I think that's the funnest part of this scene.

I think Team thought, "If I agree with him and brush this off, he'll approve," but Win interpreted it as, "I don't need you, I'd be fine without your help."

And I think it would explain why here:

Team seems confused and Win seems upset.

Win doesn't realize that his act of care is too subtle for Team to catch. Team doesn't know him yet. He has no reason to think Win wouldn't do the exact same thing for literally any member of the club. And I think Win, a whole twenty-one-year-old, just hasn't learned how to communicate his emotions with anyone let alone his eighteen-year-old junior.

That's why his parting shot is:

He wanted to be the only one taking care of Team. That's why he sent the ABC gang away to get the first aid kit. He's never had anyone important to him. He's never had something that's only his. I think without being fully conscious of it, he's lashing out because Team dismissed his help twice (while likely thinking it's what would get Win's approval).

Then Team does a smart thing:

It's in the synopsis!

Team helps Win feel wanted.

He understood as Win was leaving what he hadn't done yet: acknowledged his help.

And yeah, this could have been a lot clearer to Team if Win had just said what he wanted. The thing is, though, Win can't even explain himself to Dean, his best friend. He doesn't even realize he's been keeping people at arm's length until Dean suggests it later that night.

And I think that conversation is heavily on Win's mind for the rest of the episode.

Up to the point where he repeats his earlier taunt:

He keeps saying this: "Just do it yourself, then." He's blatantly telegraphing to Team that he wants the opposite. He wants Team to rely on him, to come to him, to need him for something, anything. Even if it's just cleaning the blood from his foot or getting off for the night. Win doesn't realize how lonely he is, or how much he needs someone who sees him and appreciates him as Win. Not the club vice president, not the heir of his family's business, not his brothers' caretaker. Just himself: a boy in his own right who's barely into his twenties and shouldn't be shouldering this much responsibility with only a motorcycle to substitute someone making him feel special.

That's why he asks this:

He just wants Team to want him.

That's my take for the moment, anyway! It's fun to speculate as the series airs, because my thoughts on them will definitely evolve over time. But for right now, I think this episode was just dropping a lot of hints all over the place that Win's desperately lonely and Team is the first person who's ever paid attention to him in a way that makes him hope for more. Not something permanent, I don't think he's anywhere near there yet, but just more than what he's had.

Anyway Win is my baby boy and he's never done anything wrong in his entire life and I'm going to cry every single episode over him. <3
