#lab leak

By Scott Scheffer
Last week, before the capitalist crisis of bank failures crowded it out of the headlines, news of a congressional hearing to further investigate the origins of the virus that caused the COVID-19 pandemic was splashed across the front pages and websites of major U.S. media. Trumpists, conspiracy theorists and fascists in the House of Representatives, who now drive the program of the Republican Party, led the charade.  Meanwhile, the China hawks in the Democratic Party and the Biden Administration are content to let them carry the ball.

See full article at archive.is “Ben Hu, a scientist at the Wuhan Institute of Virology who had done  extensive laboratory research on how coronaviruses infect humans, was identified in U.S. intelligence reports as one of the researchers who became ill in November 2019 with symptoms that American officials said were consistent with either Covid-19 or a seasonal illness. None of the researchers died.” “The Federal Bureau of Investigation has assessed with moderate confidence that a lab leak was the most likely origin of the virus and the Energy Department came to a similar conclusion with low confidence. Four other U.S. intelligence agencies assess with low confidence that the virus arose naturally, while the Central Intelligence Agency has been agnostic.“ “The U.S. intelligence community is planning to declassify more information regarding its search for Covid’s origins as soon as this week, under a law that Congress passed and President Biden signed in March. It couldn’t be determined if the declassified intelligence would include the names of the researchers, and representatives for the director of national intelligence declined to comment.” “Hu is noteworthy, current and former officials say, because of his central role in coronavirus research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Further, some of the projects he worked on were funded by U.S. government grants, according to documents acquired through the Freedom of Information Act by the White Coat Waste Project, a nonprofit that opposes taxpayer funded research on animals.“ “The Government Accountability Office noted in a report last week that some of the research at the Wuhan Institute was funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development and the National Institutes of Health. Between 2014 and 2019, about $1.4 million was disbursed for work at the institute by both agencies before such grants were suspended.”

President Donald Trump issued a direct order to pinpoint the source of the COVID 19 outbreak. It appears likely through acts of conspiracy by unknown influential ranking officials via acts of coercion and bribery potentially the most severe crimes comparable only to treason were committed. If so, the trust of every US citizen as well as global was compromised during a time of crisis. This likely crime must be investigated and all possible suspects apprehended to be questioned as well as charged if evidence is sufficient to do so.

I really love Mrs. Maisel, but I'm not sure how I feel about them promoting the 'lab leak theory' through the scenes with Maisel's daughter in 1981...

The "lab leak" theory of Covid-19's emergence is getting some new traction lately due to the release of a new government report, but I wanted to take a look at the science side of determining where a disease comes from.
Specifically, I want to look at the accusation that, because it's taken so long to figure out the origin of Covid-19, there must be something nefarious going on.
Obviously we can't rule it out, but the fact that it's three years later and we still have no certainty as to the origins of our pandemic virus is nothing special in science. It took 20 years to figure out where HIV came from, 5 years for MERS (maybe), 14 years for SARS, and we still have no idea where Ebola originated about a half century after its emergence.
So the caution I want to give to everyone, as a scientist, is this:
Don't jump to conclusions just because we haven't found a definitive origin for Covid-19 yet. This kind of thing takes time, often a decade or more. Focus on the actual evidence in front of you instead of how long it's taking or what you don't know yet and remember that the people who are telling you to do otherwise aren't trying to find the truth, they're trying to push a political agenda.
As I mentioned, I'm writing this because of a large to-do over the Department of Energy joining the FBI in assessing that the "lab leak" theory is more likely than the "natural origin" theory. Of course, it should be noted that most other government agencies involved in understanding the issue disagree, favoring the "natural origin" theory, and that even the Department of Energy has "low confidence" in its assessment (the FBI, for its part, has "moderate confidence" in its assessment).
I do note that most news sources reporting this story aren't reporting those caveats or, if they are, they are burying it several paragraphs deep. As I said: politics, not science.
If you're interested in some background information about this, here's some good starters on SARS and MERS:
And here's some good information about how we find the origins of novel human viruses as well as past examples of it:

The findings continue to cast doubt on the dubious hypothesis of a zoonotic origin for COVID-19, criticism of which was once denounced as a “conspiracy theory” and subjected to censorship.

Unique SARS-CoV-2 genomes found in Antarctic samples raises questions about SARS-CoV-2 origin, lineages
August 9, 2022
Unique SARS-CoV-2 variant found in public sequence data of Antarctic soil samples collected in 2018-2019 | Research Square Host genomes for the unique SARS-CoV-2 variant leaked into Antarctic soil metagenomic sequencing data | Research Square
“Just as more and more evidence of pre-pandemic SARS-CoV-2 circulation before the Huanan market cluster was being found, A group of Hungarian scientists (Csabai et. al.) have recently reported the discovery of SARS-CoV-2 sequences within a set of antarctic soil samples taken in a 3-week-period after 24-12-2018, submitted by the University of Science and Technology of China under the BioProject accession PRJNA692319. This BioProject and the relevant short-read sequencing data have been made invisible from direct search on NCBI, but the individual runs themselves are still accessible by typing in the individual Sequence Run ID number SRR13441704, SRR13441705 and SRR13441708 into the search bar in the NCBI SRA run browser. According to the author of PRJNA692319, the DNA from these samples were extracted in December 2019 and sent to Sangon Biotech, Shanghai, China for sequencing...
As these datasets contained unique SARS-CoV-2 sequences that are located very early on the SARS-CoV-2 Phylogenetic tree, The group of researchers attempted to deduce the host sequence for these SARS-CoV-2 genomes within the dataset by aligning the Mitochondrial sequences within these dataset to all mammalian mitochondrial sequences that are available from the 1000 genome project. In stead of animal species that lives within Antarctica or animal species that are associated with the wildlife trade, sequences belonging to common laboratory cell lines used in Virology experiments were found within these datasets such as Chlorocebus Sabaeus (VERO E6 cells), Cricetulus griseus (CHO cells) and Homo Sapiens (Huh7.5 cells) were found to be the main mitochondrial alignments within these datasets, indicating that the SARS-CoV-2 sequences were already inside a cell culture when the samples were sequenced.....”

Magical thinking and the limitless power of fear
An Orwell quote featured below is fancied by those presenting themselves to their peers as reasonable, moderate rationalists. Jake Tapper and Andrew Sullivan have or had it featured, for instance. People who copy-and-paste it to their social media bios mean to tell us that they are wise enough to see the world for what it is, unlike you easily swayed rubes in the cheap seats with your sub-1k…
