Exposing SVSSS Fanon: 9/∞
LUO BINGHE HAS CURLY HAIR
Rating: FANON - UNSUPPORTED
Luo Binghe's hair texture in the novel is not described as either curly or straight. There is only one place where his hair texture is referenced at all:
Shen Qingqiu forced his eyes open and looked down, only to find a small head with a curtain of soft black hair. (7 Seas, Ch. 28)
The idea that Luo Binghe canonically has curly hair was likely cemented within western fanon because of the EN TL official art depicting his hair as curly. However, the depiction of Luo Binghe with curly hair as a headcanon originates before the Seven Seas novels were released.
There are multiple editions where the cover art depicts a wavy-haired Luo Binghe, including Burmese, Korean, Thai (though this one is only very slightly wavy, if it isn't just an atmospheric detail), revamped Taiwanese, and of course the English version, which is by far the most curly.
However, all of these releases occured in 2020/2021, which is after the depiction of Luo Binghe with curly hair was already popularized in fandom.
The most likely original source for this headcanon is the fact that Luo Binghe is commonly compared to a sheep or lamb:
Such a selfless and considerate attitude! For a moment, Shen Qingqiu could almost imagine that he was a cute and harmless little sheep grazing on the grass and playfully nudging Shen Qingqiu’s knees, bleating, “baa baa.” (CNoveluv, Ch. 33) With that considerate display of selflessness, for a moment Shen Qingqiu could almost believe that the individual before his eyes was still that bleating, grass-loving little lamb who had huddled behind his knees. (7 Seas, Ch. 6)
This is just one of many such comparisons made throughout the novel-- though the comparison is always made to describe Luo Binghe's personality rather than his appearance, it could certainly draw an association with curly/fluffy hair, and influence the way he is portrayed in fanart.
For example, this post by @/zeldacw from 2018 (a year after the first major EN fantranslation projects began) directly states that this comparison is the origin of that particular artist's headcanon and depiction. By that point in time, the depiction was not yet as sweepingly popular as it became later on, though there had been a few other depictions of curly-haired Luo Binghe by that point in time.
However, by 2019, a comment on the BCnovels translation was made which states: "Many of the fanarts of Luo Binghe that I have seen pictured him with soft curly hair. I’m quite fond of the idea actually, it gives him the innocent child-like image"
By this point in time, the depiction of Luo Binghe with curly hair has taken off enough to become common, but it is not yet assumed to be canon. It's reasonable to assume, though, that the cover artists followed off of this same trend in fandom.
Now that the official cover art of the books depicts Luo Binghe with curly hair, despite his hair texture never being directly stated in canon, the official art is taken to be a canonical depiction especially by new fans joining the fandom through these official editions, and by fanartists continuing to keep up with the trend of drawing Luo Binghe's hair as curly.
However, common fandom depictions give his hair an even curlier, fluffier, or coilier texture than the cover art does.
This has no basis in the novel's text.
One additional statement that is commonly tossed around as a source is that Luo Binghe's hair is described as fluffy. This is an incorrect statement-- nowhere in the novel, whether the official translation or fantranslations, is Luo Binghe's hair described as being "fluffy."
(many thanks to @verycharismaticdragon , @loxare , @mochhio , @nottherailtracer , @iwhateveryou , @danmeiireader for positing potential sources, and @furbygoblinxiv and @cum-villain for timeline sleuthing!)
I've heard it said plenty of times that all Chinese people have naturally straight black hair. This is not true (I say as a wavy-haired Chinese person who gets tired of the erasure sometimes). It's not common, but it's not as rare as people think-- but wavy or curly Chinese hair behaves differently from other ethnicities'. It's relatively coarse and stiff, has a tendency to be frizzy, and (at least in my own experience) almost impossible for there to be any kind of uniformity to the curl, and takes a lot of work to style well-- many Asian people with curly hair will just straighten theirs instead.
One could argue that because Luo Binghe's hair texture is never described as curly or wavy, then there is no reason to think that it would deviate from the typical straight hair. In my opinion, this is significantly likely. Without the EN art, I would certainly not imagine Luo Binghe to have curly hair, and would assume it was straight.
There are also Chinese beauty standards to keep in mind, which overwhelmingly favor straight hair.
Of course, because it is never directly stated whether he has or doesn't have wavy or curly hair, it cannot be said that it is against canon. Furthermore, his appearance has a bit of an idol-like air to it, and some idols do have wavy or curly hair.
Therefore, it is not impossible that Luo Binghe has curly or wavy hair. However, since it would be likely that an uncommon hair texture would be described directly if it were intended to be canon, and Shen Qingqiu's narration would almost certainly have mentioned it with his tendency to gush over LBH's appearance, it is not particularly likely.
There's not really anything wrong with depicting Luo Binghe as curly-haired, and it doesn't even directly conflict with canon-- however, if he does have curly hair, he would have curly Asian hair (albeit, curly Asian hair that miraculously looks as though he had used a complicated hair routine but really he just woke up that way because he is the Protagonist™)-- so if someone isn't familiar with the hair type, it wouldn't hurt to do a little bit of research before drawing/writing about it.
However fans choose to portray it, though, it should not be assumed that Luo Binghe's hair is canonically curly.

Hi! I keep seeing ppl debating if SQQ's eyes are canonically green or black. What do you think? Somebody said SQQ's eyes are green in the cover, but if you think otherwise, why? If you've discussed about this before in your page, may I see the link?
Hey! I posted this one on my meta blog (this might be what actually stirred up the discussion), but I still need to update the post there to include the timeline and all relevant information provided by various commenters.
Anyway, I'll go ahead and give a little summary here.
SQQ has black eyes in the novel, and they're explicitly described that way (黑, 乌黑 specifically, color words meaning black and crow-black (like jet black)).
This means that a depiction of SQQ with green eyes is contrary to novel canon.
At some point, people on the wiki said his eyes were described as 青 (qing)which is turquoise green/blue. I'm not exactly sure where this came from, but one very, very loose potential for this could be a misreading of the following description: 眉清目秀 which is used to describe the appearance of a young SJ. It's possible, perhaps, that the character 清 (clear) here was accidentally misread as 青 (green/blue) but i don't think that's a particularly easy misreading, especially since in that phrase the 清 is linked to 眉 (brows) instead of 目(eyes). But anything is possible, and this is the only place in the novel I could find reference to "clear eyes" in regards to SQQ, and the only potential way this misreading could have basis in the novel. Either way, his eyes are never described as 青, so that's an incorrect assumption.
So, the only thing I really consider canon proper is the novel itself, but that's my own stance. A wider stance would be considering the novel as primary canon, while the donghua/manhua are secondary canon, and things like official art could be tertiary canon. In this framework, details included in the donghua that aren't in the novel but aren't contradicted by it would also be considered wider canon and fill in those gaps, while things that contradict the novel would be canon as well, but specifically alternate, donghua canon. The same would apply to official art-- if it doesn't contradict the donghua or novel, it fills the gap, otherwise it's another kind of alternate canon.
Under this wider system, then Shen Qingqiu's canon eye color would go this way:
Primary canon - Black eyes Secondary Canon - Grey Eyes Tertiary Canon - Black, Grey, or Green Eyes
So depending on what you consider canon, then the answer can change-- but in my opinion, the novel overrides other sources.
Okay, so let's go into the secondary and tertiary canons, then. On the post on my meta blog that I linked earlier, in the replies and reblogs, there are some references about the evolution of SQQ's character design in donghua and fanart, so I'll leave those explanations to speak for themselves.
Let me talk a bit about the official art, then.
Though the English edition has the most vivid green eyes in character design, it is NOT the only cover art with green-eyed SQQ!
Across translations, he is depicted with varying black, grey, or green eyes, as follows (using purple color for grey since tumblr doesn't have a grey color):
Taiwanese (OG) - Black Taiwanese (Revamped) - Darker green, occasionally darker grey (some variety here) Thai - Lighter grey Vietnamese - Black Burmese - Medium grey or dull green (again, some variety) Korean - Black, but may vary to grey or very dull green (resolution not high enough to tell)
And then of course the vivid green of the English edition.
So when it comes to official art, it's basically evenly split, with three black, three grey, three green (counting the ones that vary).
Green-eyed SQQ is not exclusively a western fandom thing. I mean, on some levels, it makes sense for character design-- matching his eyes to his clothing color.
Personally, I wouldn't call it canon. And I think if anyone does want to claim it's canon (via the tiered system), that it would be a good idea to preface that you're going off of alternate canon instead of novel canon, so that it's not used as an argument when the discussion is specifically centered on novel canon.
There is a level of canonicity to either green-eyed or grey-eyed SQQ, but such depictions still contradict the novel, even if supported by other mediums, since his eyes are specifically described as black there.
I guess, it depends on how you want to define canon at the end of the day. I'm not here to tell other people how to play in their own sandboxes, I just personally like to play in novel canon only so that's my stance on it.
Hope this is the sort of info you wanted!

tuesday!
another two-weeker because i forgor last week but it's not actually that beefy
listening: metric albums formentera from 2022 and formentera ii from 2023 are full of good earworms. favorite songs: all comes crashing, enemies of the ocean, oh please; just the once, days of oblivion, who would you be for me ... idk all of formentera ii is really really good. easily could list all those songs as favorite. just love a good synth! just incredibly catchy albums.
i got back into the podcast sweetbitter; i listened to the first season on sappho not long after it started, but fell off when they started season 2 on pirates. i'm listening to that one now and i'm enjoying it! i'm a little leery of season 3's topic (christian bible) but i feel like they do a good and sensitive job of covering information in general. the podcast hasn't actually updated in ages which is interesting, i'm not sure if they're just on hiatus or if it's like...done? i can't seem to find any information on it, there are some tweets that were posted on reddit about it that are now deleted, maybe there was a falling out??? it's possible they say something in the most recent episode (may of last year) about a hiatus but it's not in the episode notes...in any case, god i hate the ads they have. they're so stuck in my head in the worst way possible. 0/10 on that front. get that coin but please choose less obnoxious/a wider variety of ads (i know that's not always in their control but yk).
reading: finished mdzs. restarted svsss but it's been sideburnered for a few days while i play catchup on work.
watching: finished kill la kill with the boyf...am caught up to dunmesh...been passively absorbing the black list because my roommate has been watching it...
playing: fallow but i really wanna do disco elysium soon for Real
making: pottery has been on a planned 2-week break between sessions so no reports here! i did go in briefly for open studio to attach a handle and re-trim some of my citrus juicer. otherwise, really haven't done much...i restrung a necklace for my mom as a birthday gift a few weeks ago, and i have been drawing a little again! some dunmeshi fanart, some concepts for a painting i want to do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
eating: fairly boring - two weeks ago was in florida with my grandma and that eating is always notably bland. last week my roommate and i fuck-it-we-balled a bit so it was a lot of tuna salad and adjacent things, this week we got some more recipes rolling in though. last night we did a off-the-cuff vaguely-thai rice noodle and tofu thing that was real yummy but not the most filling because there was like no fat in it. definitely could use a different protein or something to juice it up.
misc: doing okay! valiantly played homework catch-up this past week! excited to go back to pottery tmrw, thinking about upcoming wedding gifts to make!

I spend a lot of time thinking why the painting above King’s bed is “The Coronation of Napoleon”
Tumblr media
Is is an actual painting in the hotel room/serviced apartment they rented for this shoot? (unlikely, it’s fucking big, and as people have pointed out, off center in every single shot in relation to the bed)
Is it because King is named “King”? And Napoleon is a... king? (but, why a French King? I took Thai history in my high school years, dude, these guys stayed neutral through wars, plus they have their own Kings, ok i’ll shut up about that now)
Is it because the painting has the colour theme and size of the look the cinematographer wanted to portray? (Look, there’s a bunch of other paintings I’m sure could fit the bill)
Maybe there was a discoloured spot above the bed so they needed this big ass painting to cover it? (Again, lots of other choices)
Basically the painting is a fanart of what actually happened on that day, so.. was this painting meant to imply that how King wished that life could be perfect the way that he saw it but actually like the painting, it.... really wasn’t?
Anyway, in the painting Napoleon crowns his wife Josephine, as Queen of France. So, is King trying to crown Uea as QUEEN OF HIS LIFE? But then, this story doesn’t end happy either?!
I know I’m thinking too much about it, but seriously. WHY. Why this painting??

Some of my first Nevermoor fanarts! In the first picture Morrigan is holding a parsnip. In the dinner scene at Crow Manor the family is served lamb chop and parsnips, and Mog says it’s her favourite dish.
[ID: Two pictures of Morrigan Crow from Nevermoor. Her full body is visible. In the first picture, she’s standing up with her left leg in the air. She’s holding a cartoonishly big parsnip. She’s wearing a long, black dress which readhes her knees. The dress has a white collar, two white buttons, and two pockets. She’s wearing black shoes with white bows. The background is light green.
In the second picture, she’s sitting down. She’s cradling a blue stuffed animal bunny. It has light blue ears, a light blue stomach and a light blue tail. It has blue buttons for eyes. Morrigan is wearing a black dress that ends just over her knees. The dress has a white, frilly collar, and white frills on the edge of the dress’ skirt. The sleeves reach her wrists, and the shoulders of the sleeves are puffy. Her shoes are black. She has a white bow on the right side of her hair, above her ear. The background is light blue. / END ID]

Inspired by a recent post talking about the Nevermoor Thai covers, I decided I would make a few posts with the book covers from different countries of however many books are out at the time.
Starting off with the Swedish covers! Illustrated by Mats Minnhagen, these covers are definitely some of my favourites. I managed to find both the empty illustrations and the finalized covers.

Mulder and Scully wait for an informant. Post-Dreamland II
A No Show
“Mulder, what are we doing here?” Scully asks shivering from the frigid weather.  She wore her heavy coat, but the temperature drastically dropped once the sun set.  She adjusts her navy cashmere scarf to better cover her red-tipped ears and quickly places her hands in her coat pockets.  She feels the moisture of her breath on the scarf.  The two of them are standing nearby a children’s playground in the DC area under a lamp pole.
“My contact wanted to meet me here,” Mulder answers, “He said he’s got something big to tell me.”
“Big enough for you to wait out at a park in the cold on a Friday night, Mulder? A Friday night.” She emphasizes through clenched teeth to refrain from chattering, subconsciously moving closer to Mulder to seek warmth, bumping into his right arm in the process.  She remains vigilant, looking for another human being in the dimly lit park.
“You didn’t have to come, Scully,” Mulder reminds her.  She shakes her head.
“Uh-uh. Your buzzwords were ‘informant meeting.’  There’s no way I’m leaving you alone to handle a meeting, however pointless it may be.”  Mulder manages to look offended.
“Give me an example when an informant of mine came up short.”
“Area 51.”
“You said that rather quickly, Scully.”
“That occurred two weeks ago, Mulder.  By the way, Kersh’s assistant has been ogling you ever since we came back from Nevada.”
“Yeah? I didn’t notice.” Scully huffs at his response.  She takes her hands out of her pockets and rubs them together.
“You have to be blind not to notice, Mulder.” She mutters into her cupped hands as she tries to warm them up with her breath.  She’s beginning to think her heavy coat is nothing more than a fashion statement.  Mulder’s expression is unreadable for a brief moment before he shows one of concern.
“Are you that cold?” Mulder goes and touches her left hand with his right. “Scully! Your hands are freezing!”  He starts to rub both her hands in his vigorously.
“You don’t happen to have gloves or mittens stowed away in your coat pockets, do you?” her joke fell flat as he continued to focus on her hands, frowning that her fingertips were taking on a bluish hue.
“Jesus, Scully.  I’ll have to remember to pack some hand warmers in my pockets during the winter season. You take the phrase ‘Cold hands, warm heart’ literally.”  Mulder pauses and checks his watch, “It’s been half an hour, already.  The guy’s a no-show. 0 for two on the informant front.  Come on.  Let’s get you someplace warm.”  He places her left hand into the crook of his right arm and starts to head back to the car. She slips her right hand into her pocket as she maintains his pace.
“Maybe he found out you no longer work on the X-Files.  Did you update your business cards?   He says nothing. Scully sighs.
“Mulder, we have to lay low.  Keep our noses clean--”
“Hard to keep it clean with the pile of bull shit we have to deal with,” he replies angrily.
“Have you reached out to Agent Fowley regarding about your potential informants?” She asks tentatively.  “You’ve mentioned before that she’s keeping an eye out for you.”  Mulder’s slows his pace as he turns to look at her confused, slipping her left hand out from his arm in the process.
“For cases that relate to anything she and I both saw at that facility. But no, I haven’t spoken to her recently.” Scully nods, adjusting her scarf with her left hand before placing it in her pocket. Eyes downcast, she continues walking.
“What’s this about, Scully?”
“I wonder if she’s been withholding information that you’ve been seeking since our reassignment.”
“Diana wouldn’t do that, Scully,” he answers immediately, “Spender would, but not her.”
“Okay.” Mulder reaches out to gently grab her elbow to stop her. He waits for her to look at him.
“Scully, whatever reservations you have against Diana—“
“Mulder, she’s your friend, and I know how much you value your friends. You trust them unwaveringly.”
“You’re my friend, Scully.”
“I’m your partner in this case, who’s in dire need of warm shelter, preferably someplace that serves food.”  He chuckles.
“How about I treat you to that new Thai place you’ve wanted to try?”
“Yeah?” Scully shoots him one of her rare smiles. The one that makes his chest tighten, makes him wonder about alternate universes —one where he leads a normal life and asks a girl he likes on a date.  He smiles softly at her.
“Yeah.”

How watching Thai BL made me feel happy again
This quarantine (why do I feel like I have to start everything acknowledging the pandemic, you know?) has all got us staring into our screens, looking to pass the days  with anything online. For me, that just happened to be the entire Thai BL universe.
I guess I started off with 2gether, like most of us. I was scrolling through Facebook when I came about a post where two boys were listening to a song on their earphones while a concert was playing, and I thought, "That's so cute!" (referring to the actors, and the scene) but at the same time, I thought, "Why are they listening to a song on their phone when there's live music infront of them, not to mention that it's VERY LOUD!
And so, partly because of Sarawat, I started watching 2gether, and my, oh my, I couldn't let my phone down without watching all the episodes they had thus far (6 episodes in, I think) and WOW everytime something happened, I would pause the video, get up and walk all over the room until my kilig would subside. They got me good.
When I found that they release new episodes every week, I had to drop the series for a while because I didn't want to watch an unfinished series, because then my kilig momentum would stop. So I vowed to (painfully) wait and avoid all spoilers until the last episode airs.
In the meantime, I went about watching another BL series, TharnType, and then another one, 'Cause You're My Boy, and then now, Theory of Love. And WOW I have never fangirled this much ever since One Direction boomed in 2012, when I would tweet about them all day, watch all their videos (and fan videos) online, and just eat, sleep, and breathe One Direction. My current situation is almost similar, and it's such a familiar feeling to be this giddy, I can't believe that it's been eight years since I last felt this way.
It's made me productive, too. I've started making orchestrations and covers of their OSTs, you can find one I've started here.
For the longest time, I've avoided feeling like this because I just felt that it took too much of my time, when I should be doing other productive things like practicing my music. I would laugh at my friends who're fans (or stans) of Korean idols because I've been there before, I understand their lingos and am able to understand them in a way that non-fangirls can't. But I've sort of retired from that, until recently. I forgot just how fun it was to invest your time in actors and characters and stories.
Where I’m from, fangirls are somewhat looked down upon because, as they say it, “hindi ka naman kilala niyan, e” (they don’t even know you), “mga bakla naman ‘yan” (they’re gay), wasting very expensive tickets to their concerts and generally wasting time on them rather than doing more productive work, and other demeaning remarks. But what they don’t understand is how these fans have made a community for themselves that constantly uplifts each other, all while supporting their favorite actors/performers. It’s in this space that I can be genuinely happy without ever being judged for it.
I'm not going to go full-on fangirl, like making fanaccs (they call it stan accounts now, wow), making fanart, watching every video. I'm not going down that rabbit hole because I don't think I can keep up with the pace. I just want to digest what I can, and what I like. And so far, I'm having fun being like myself (even for a while), again.
