Madara carries the shrine carefully and Izuna follows him, cradling the family tablets, but it brings Tajima no comfort.

Having to chase his sons was vastly annoying when he was alive, and it isn't any better now he's dead. He digs his heels in like a recalcitrant horse, but the call of blood cannot be denied and he's dragged into the building which Madara has decreed will house the dead.

All the dead.

From both clans.

This village is a stupid idea, Tajima has always said so, and it's only stupider now that his son has made it into a reality. How exactly is any shinobi supposed to pay their respects to their ancestors when the dead all reside side by side, murdered and murderers alike?

And now Hashirama speaks again. “Izuna-san,” he says, and his voice is truly soft for once, full of the damning kindness that made this Village true in the end, “Do you want this? Him?”

Izuna hears the truth in those words, and he knows that if says No now, this will all end, Tobirama will leave, and depending on his answer Hashirama might continue or might stop as well.

And—

And Izuna—Izuna bites the inside of his cheeks, he hears Hashirama saying you can have this again, thinks of the look on Tobirama’s face, and then he meets Tobirama’s gaze for a single second before squeezing his eyes shut and turning his face against Hashirama’s neck with a nod to whisper a shaky “Yes. Please.”

A spark of chakra, the sound of papers rustling and falling to the floor, and then Tobirama's hand closes around Izuna's ankle as the man steps out of his flash step right in front of him, and it feels so right Izuna forgets how to breathe for a moment. Tobirama's other hand comes up to cup his face, thumb brushing against lips Izuna didn't realize he was biting anxiously.  “...May I kiss you?”

WIP Wednesday

It’s Wednesday for me, so here is a short snippet from one of my WIPs as my offering for WIP Wednesday.

This is from Making a Move (in the Opposite Direction), Itachi and Kisame's romance in Courting Culture Confusion.

Also, just a reminder that Mikoto is Kikiyo’s granddaughter and that their entire line is made up of shinobi who are also geisha - they’re spies who specialise in music, dance and assassination. They’ve been doing this for generations and the first story which really featured them was To Tempt a Target.

Many thanks to @denialcity​ for giving me permission to use their idea about a particular song becoming famous within the Uchiha. 

Mikoto listens as her son's lover sings the song for the last time.

He's sung it three times this afternoon, and each time a little differently. Sometimes as if to a woman, sometimes as if to a man, explaining what he knows about it and where he heard it each time - it's obviously popular among the Europeans - and he's clearly assuming that she's interested in the history of the song itself.

He's also wrong.

Oh, it's interesting and she'll certainly add the information to the records kept by the clan, but that's not the reason she asked him to sing it for her.

No, it's much simpler than that.

This is the song which the entire clan wants to learn.

Kisame might not be aware, but Itachi wasn't the only person who was listening that night - and even those who didn't hear it then have heard about it since. It's been the subject of much discussion and Mikoto watched Kisame's performance today with her Sharingan just so she'd be able to pass the memory to the people who will inevitably ask for it though the most realistic genjutsu she can create.

And that will be... almost everyone.

"What's happening?" Tobirama asked, frowning. 

"I am going to see if I can catch her for a small chat, and then change out of this kimono," Izuna replied. "Her interpretation of that last passage is just— wow." 

He slipped away and Tobirama watched him go, and then looked at the food and then Madara. 

"What?" Madara asked. 

"Is he truly so enamoured with her?" Tobirama asked, not sure why that sat strangely in his chest.
