Lovesquare Variations that matter

So I was just thinking about this, and while there are lots of different outfits and monikers that our heroes go through, there are only a few that actually change how they interact with each other. I’m not counting joke identities like Marino the clumsy waiter or Comrade Mayo here.

Adrien Identities: Adrien Agreste, Chat Noir, Aspik, Cat Walker

Marinette Identities: Marinette Dupain-Cheng, Ladybug, Multimouse

I’m gonna skip past the main Lovesquare of Adrienette, Ladrien, Marichat, and Ladynoir because anyone with any familiarity with the show already knows those, and skip to the more interesting side ones, some of which have never gotten a chance to actually happen, but would theoretically have interesting and unique interactions. I’m leaving out ones that are basically the same interactions with different names, like how Multichat is Marichat, and Aspbug is Ladrien.

That leaves us with:

Snekmouse: This one has an actual ship name, along with fanfics and fanart, ever since we first found out that Adrien was getting the Snake and Marinette was getting the Mouse. Both of them know each other’s identities, but don’t KNOW that the other person knows, which leads to the two of them getting to be more bold with each other underneath the veil of their perceived anonymity. Could be especially useful for resolving misunderstandings.

Aspik/Marinette: Haven’t actually seen this one show up except once, I think, in a compilation, weirdly enough, but they WOULD have a unique interaction. Aspik doesn’t know that Marinette knows he’s Adrien, after all. I figure this interaction would mostly be like Adrienette, but with Adrien attempting to be a little more suave, and Marinette maybe being able to talk to him a little better... maybe.

Cat Walker/Marinette: All of the Cat Walker interactions are unique, since Adrien not only has an identity here that Marinette doesn’t know of in any of her forms, but a different personality as well. It’d be interesting to see him attempt to be the perfect prince with her. I wonder whether she’d see through him and realize he wasn’t comfortable acting that way if she spent more time with him? I could see him opening up to her about his reasons for putting up this facade, maybe even admitting to being Chat Noir, and honestly telling her how he’d been thinking and feeling the past few weeks, that he didn’t think Ladybug liked or valued him at all, and he wanted to assume a form where he’d matter again, because if she didn’t need or want him... well, there was a reason he’d had no energy the past week or so.

Cat Walker/Multimouse: I think Multimouse might mention how she had to give up her Miraculous before because Chat Noir found out who she was, possibly leading to Cat Walker badmouthing Chat Noir as being untrustworthy, and Multimouse explaining that wasn’t true, leading to Cat Walker going over all the ways that Ladybug didn’t trust Chat Noir (according to what Plagg told him supposedly) and Multimouse refuting him. Or trying to, since she couldn’t say she was Ladybug.

Ladywalker: Now this one, we actually saw. Very suave, very gentlemanly interaction on Cat Walker’s part, leaving Ladybug a blushy mess. Turns out, she has a really hard time concentrating when head-over-heels for someone. They did work well together, but ultimately, she missed her usual kitty.

The Illusion Of Disguises

AN: This was inspired by this thread. Hope you enjoy this short crack fic I wrote on a whim!

Lila smirked, she had truly perfected her disguise and was ready to go back to Collège Françoise Dupont. Her new identity is Cerise and has transferred from another school that she will not get into details about.

Cerise enters the classroom and is about to say her greeting but stopped when everyone stared at her with scrutiny in their eyes.

“Oh, look who decided to show up.” Alya hissed. “Never thought I’d see you again, Lila the liar.”

Cerise’s jaw dropped. “I’m sure you’re mistaken, I’m Cerise and I’m new—“

“Oh cut the bullshit, we all know it’s you, Lila!” Alix slammed her hands down on the desk. “You had the gall to disappear after your lies got exposed and now you came back after everything you’ve done.”

Everyone continued to jeer at her and then they started throwing stuff at her which caused her to leave the room. How the heck did this happen? She spent so much time with her disguise that she was sure she’d never be recognized.

“Cht! At least it’s only this class who recognizes me.” Cerise muttered.

Then, two random students gaped and pointed at her, “Oh, it’s you Lila! Like the new look, trying out for the school play?”

“I’m sorry but I think you got the wrong person.” Cerise chuckled and for once, her voice held a tinge of nervousness.

“No way, I recognize that face and I think you’ll definitely get a part in the school play.” The student smiled. “Gotta go, bye.”

Word spread quickly and soon enough, everyone in school is aware that Lila Rossi is back and she isn’t amused at this kind of attention because it seems like her every move is being monitored.

Hiding behind a hallway, Lila took a deep breath and muttered. “Nooroo, dark—“

“What are you doing here?” A voice she recognized caused her to yelp and jump away.

“Ah, nothing!” Lila hastily replied. She inwardly groaned as she recognized the familiar face of Marinette Dupain-Cheng. “I’m sure we haven’t met but I’m-“

“Lila Rossi, didn’t expect to see your face again.” Marinette interrupted, her eyes glinted with suspicion.

“Ugh, why does everyone recognize me?!” Lila shrieked, giving up the illusion of pretending. “I worked for weeks on this disguise and it’s all for nothing!”

Marinette rolled her eyes. “Whatever, I’m leaving.” She walked away before Lila could react.

Then, she proceeded to throw a goddamn tantrum because how did her carefully arranged disguise fall apart on her?

Some time later:

Lila was busy walking through Paris and having an overall bad day considering she hadn’t transformed since everyone kept recognizing her and asking for pictures which she’d refused.

Then, she saw that the Grand hotel is hosting a party and she’d sneak past security just because she managed to catch a glimpse of Adrien.

Smirking, she walked towards him but didn’t get the chance as someone knocked into her and she fell into the table that had food which ruined her clothes.

“Ugh, look at what you did!” Lila screeched.

“I’m s-sorry Mademoiselle, I’m a very clumsy waiter, are you hurt?” The waiter said, in a very exaggerated french accent.

Lila blinked as she realized who she’s looking at. “Marinette?!”

“What? No! I’m Marino and I work here!” Marino replied, sweat dripping from her forehead.

“Uh-huh, you're just Marinette with a fake mustache and I’m gonna expose you!” Lila reached over to grab the fake mustache but her wrist was caught by none other than Adrien.

“Lila, it’s rude to try and grab someone’s mustache. And this isn’t Marinette but Marino, I’ve met him before.” Adrien says.

“What are you saying, that’s Marinette!” Lila exclaimed, pointing an accusatory finger at her. “She shouldn’t be here and she’s not a waiter!”

“Lila, you may be a liar but I will not tolerate you making false accusations like that.” Adrien grumbled, his eyes glinted dangerously. “Marino is a very professional waiter and has done his job for years and you should leave before security comes here and escorts you out.”

Lila managed to hear the other guests murmuring to themselves and they were not in favor of this crazy girl who showed up out of nowhere to harass the waiter.

Lila felt her eyes twitch at the situation and she didn’t have time to expose Marinette as Gorilla, who she remembers was Adrien's bodyguard, dragged her out of the party while she kept screaming bloody murder at Marino.

Adrien reached his hand towards Marino, “Sorry about that. Lila is a real piece of work.”

“It’s no problem, I’ve had my fair share of people like her!” Marino replied. “I think I’ve gotta leave because my shift is almost finished.”

“That’s cool, you know. My girlfriend actually cosplayed as you once during a party my friends held. It’s nice to meet the real deal.” Adrien smiled. “I can’t wait to see her later.”

“Right, I’m Marino and no one else!” Marino chuckled nervously.

Meanwhile, Alya and Tikki who had been listening to the whole convo just facepalmed and wondered about the world’s sense of irony.

-Gabriel doing his usual bit of talking to a corpse

-Dude really showing he's desperate

-Emilie knows her husband is batshit crazy

-The Adrinette is so f***ing cheesy I love it. THEY CALL EACHOTHER WHILE BRUSHING THEIR TEETH. UGHHHHH. Its dopamine

-And Gabriel just f***ing ruins the mood. The shift in adrien's expression, Just distraught.

-ADRIEN. MY BOY. HE CALLED OUT HIS S*** PANCAKES. I am so proud

-Plagg be spitting facts. Too bad neither of them know Adrien really has no choice in the matter

-They are trying to kiss but they both cant. Its cute but also... FUCKING KISS ALREADY! JUST KISS! YOUVE KISSED ALREADY. YOU CAN DO IT!

-So mendeleiev is the new principal, and just like before Chloé has the principal wrapped around her finger. This is getting really boring

-And cue Lila's plan

-Oh my gosh is this going to make Ms.Bustier go into Labor?!

-Ms.Bustier still trying to appeal to whatever organ is pumping the blood in Chloé's body. But this is season 5 Chloé, not season 2 or 3 Chloé.

-So Ms.Bustier got fired and I think Marinette is expelled. Sure feels like a recycled season 3 episode.

-WAIT... IS MS.bustier going to get akumatized and then they have to fight a PREGNANT WOMAN?!

-Ms.Sans-Culotte? Interesting reference

-Oh damn, she broke free. Impressive. She said no thanks and just broke the akumatization

-Monarch got akuma blocked

-So Ms.Bustier is leaving with a moderately attractive woman on a Motorcycle... Guess everyone is a Lesbian this season.

-Has no one seen robocop before? I know they have since there is an akuma parody of him. Its a bad idea

-Chloé now is just a mindless mean puppet. This is sad, At least before Chloé was mean and it was her choice and she did her own stuff, now its more like she is just a muppet to be used. Its sad really

-Lila manipulating Gabriel here, I respect the play, but im still annoyed by how dumb this is. Is chloé actually going to become the mayor?

-Tomoe out here just reminding Gabriel every chance she gets he's dying

-Rose, I love where your head is at, but not right now

-Lila really acting like Chloé's braincell. Is Gabriel really going to make Chloé mayor? They pulled this whole Villain is the Mayor s*** in Danny Phantom and it was stupid then

-Well Gabriel and Tomoe were right about one thing, the cops are useless here

-I feel like this message is hitting a bit too close to the French revolution

-Ladybug and Chat noir really just clowning on these akuma these days

-Ah some Zoebug, interesting

-So the mayor just quit, did not see that coming

-That was anticlimactic... something is not right here

-That was an onscreen kiss. Oh that is getting censored in the other areas

-THE LUCKY CHARM WASNT FOR THE AKUMA, IT WAS FOR CHLOÉ!

-And Chloe becomes mayor/dictator

This dumb, this is really dumb.

I love the lovesquare stuff, but this show really jumped the shark. Chloé became Mayor with Robots, Lila/Cerise or whatever has multiple identities and puppeteers things is just already too much. This has just started going off the rails WAY too fast.

The show just feels so... off.

The episode was 5/10

I cant say I hated it, but i just cant find any enjoyment from this arc aside from the Lovesquare.

I cant say I feel as enthusiastic about this season as I was during Elation.

The weather's fair, her skirt feels comfy, and her brown locks are brushed to perfection. She smiles to herself as she and her partner make their way to their table in the outdoor restaurant.

It's a good day.

But at the corner of her eye, she spots a figure, a small black-haired girl dressed as a waiter. Dread begins to pool in his stomach.

It's not a good day.

Bernard tugs gently at her arm. "You reserved a nice place, Miss Hill."

She returns his smile. "Only the best for us of course."

They sit down and take their picks from the menu but Caroline's nerves does not ease off. She donned the disguise to have a peaceful day out with her boyfriend and not to be stalked by her devilish little sister.

"What can I get for you two?"

Caroline gapes at the sound of the voice. A horrendous bushy mustache sits on her (his?) upper lip and a pair of glasses accompanies the look.

"I'll have this one." Bernard points at the menu. "What about you, babe?"

Caroline scowls at the waiter, resisting a groan. "I'm still choosing . . . Mister . . ."

"Marino," the waiter supplies, gesturing to his nametag.

"Your nametag's upside down."

"Whoops." Marino flips it around with a low-toned giggle.

Caroline squints at it. "Marino Enyaw?"

Marino proudly twiddles with his mustache. "Quite a classy name, is it not?"

Caroline wants to facepalm. Meanwhile Bernard looks back and forth between the two of them, clearly confused.

Marino takes their orders and stumbles back to the counter. Caroline buries her face in her hands. "Bern, I'm so sorry about that."

"About what? He seems like a nice waiter."

Sneaking Away

Oops! Sorry I missed yesterday. I got busy and didn’t have enough time to finish the chapter. There’s going to be two chapters today to make up for it tho! Lemme know what you think!

It was official. Adrien was bored. With a quiet sigh, he rested his cheek on his fist, surveying the party his father was throwing. It was yet another dance for some promotion or other.

Whatever it was none of his friends had been allowed in. So it was just him. Alone.

He stared down at the dance floor wistfully, imagining slow dancing with Marinette once more. Now that they were officially dating, Adrien would be allowed to keep her in his arms for dance after dance.

It would’ve been wonderful. Too bad his father would never have allowed it.

He sighed again, this time much louder. Pulling out his phone, he was about to text Marinette and let her know just how much he missed her when a hand on his wrist stopped him.

Turning around, Adrien blinked in surprise. A waiter was grinning at him, their long, dark hair tied back in a ponytail. The mustache twitched above their lips even as their blue eyes sparkled at him.

Obviously, his father had sent this waiter up to force him to mingle when all he wanted to do was text Marinette. Clearing his throat, he put on his best model smile. Oddly, the eyes in front of him dimmed, looking strangely disappointed. They let go of his wrist with a shy grin, their expression turning rather sheepish.

Feeling confused, Adrien nodded down at the dance floor. “I suppose my father wants me down there, right?”

An adorable, familiar, tinkling laugh came from the waiter. With their eyes having regained some of their previous shimmer, they slowly peeled the mustache from their lips.

“Adrien, it’s me,” Marinette whispered, finally able to stop herself from laughing.

“Marinette!” he practically shouted, throwing his arms around her in a giant hug. “I was just about to text you! I missed you so much.”

She squeezed him to her even tighter and he practically melted into her embrace, finally feeling at home. All of his previous moping completely washed away as Adrien nuzzled contentedly into her arms.

After a long pause, he pulled back because a sudden realization just hit him. “Marinette, what are you doing here? I didn’t know you had an invitation.”

Once again, her eyes gleamed mischievously. “Marinette didn’t.” Slowly, she placed the mustache back on her face. “Marino, on the other hand, did.”

With another happy laugh, Adrien threw his arms around her once more. “I’m so glad you’re here.”

Marinette leaned back slightly, gently running the back of her hand down his cheek. “I saw some selfies of the party and you looked so miserable. How could I leave you alone like that?”

“I’m always miserable without you.” He pouted, his lower lip jutting out.

She squeaked quietly, her face turning a light shade of pink.

Adrien watched her blush with a slight amount of satisfaction. It had gotten much harder to fluster her now that they were dating but he still enjoyed seeing her flush.

Shaking her head quickly, the pink faded away and Marinette gave him a confident smile, jerking her head in the direction of his room. “Do you want to go up to your room and get away from this party?”

“Yes, please!” He nodded his head eagerly, letting her tug him up the stairs. Adrien shot a quick glance over his shoulder and, seeing his father nowhere in sight, he blew out a breath of relief. If he wasn’t here then he wouldn’t notice that Adrien had snuck away.

Once they were safely inside his room, Adrien flopped onto his couch with a relieved sigh. “Thank goodness for you, Marinette. I thought I was going to be stuck feeling miserable and lonely for hours.”

She gave a quiet giggle before searching outside his room suspiciously. She must not have seen anyone because she proceeded to shut his door with a quiet click. Turning around, Marinette beamed at him. “I don’t think anyone saw us.”

“Good!” he beamed back, opening his arms wide so that she collapsed into his embrace once more. With a happy, content sigh, Adrien nuzzled his chin into her hair, quickly pulling her ponytail out and letting her long, soft hair fan out around him. Suddenly, everything seemed so much brighter and better now that Marinette was here.

“Can you sneak in every time my father hosts an event?” he murmured.

Marinette laughed, almost dislodging his head from hers as she shook. Once she had stopped giggling, Adrien took his spot back and gave a pleased sigh.

After a brief moment, Marinette eventually murmured, “You’re going to get us caught, you know.”

“Mmm,” he hummed, shaking his head back and forth as his eyes fluttered closed in contentment. “I don’t care.”

“You’re adorable.” She snickered, tilting her head up to look up at him.

Adrien’s lips pursed at the action, a frown on his brow as he had to remove his chin from the comfortable spot it had taken on the top of her head.

With Marinette grinning up at him with that adorable gleam in her eyes, though, he couldn’t stay too mad.

“Did I tell you how glad I am that you came to find me yet?” he asked, softly caressing her cheek.

“Yes, you did.” She laughed, turning around to face him with an even wider grin. “Many... many times.”

Adrien simply tugged her into his arms, enjoying her little splutter as her face was practically buried in his chest. He cuddled even closer to her, whispering, “Marinette, I love you.”

She managed to lean out of his arms, gazing up at him with a pair of shimmering, sapphire blue eyes. “I love you too, Adrien,” Marinette whispered softly.

They both leaned in at the same time. Neither was certain who started their first kiss. All Adrien knew was that he finally felt complete. That he had been longing for this ever since he had gotten a chance to kiss her again as Chat Noir.

Melting into her lips with a smile, he ran his fingers through her hair. Marinette’s arms wrapped around his neck and she tilted her head, deepening the kiss. It was perfect.

For once, Adrien was grateful for the gala his father threw. It meant that he had spent even more time with the girl of his dreams.

‘Party Down’ Is Back. Did You R.S.V.P.?

The invitations have been sent, the appetizers plated, the bottles opened. Rows of glasses gleam like baby stars. And somewhere, on the fringes of the celebration, a cater waiter is about to do something very wrong.

This was the template of “Party Down,” a Starz comedy that ran for two 10-episode seasons, debuting in the spring of 2009. Canceled just as critics and niche audiences were beginning to catch on, the show followed the disaffected employees of a mid-tier catering company as they moved from party to party, one per episode, filching booze, seducing guests, snorting coke, flirting with Nazism and accidentally poisoning George Takei.

The original 20 episodes never included a surprise party. But get your streamers and party blowers ready. Because in a surprise to just about everyone — most likely including the folks at Nielsen, who once awarded the show’s finale a 0.0 rating among 18- to 49-year-olds — “Party Down” is back. A six-episode revival will premiere on Starz on Feb. 24, with new episodes arriving weekly.

Martin Starr, a returning cast member, seemed to genuinely marvel at the development.

“This was the only show I’ve worked on where people came to work when they weren’t working,” he said in a group video call. “It’s crazy that we get to come back and do it again.”

“Truth be told,” his co-star Ken Marino said, “the reason I came back to set when I wasn’t working is I was between homes.”

Starr: “I do remember you were finding places to go to the bathroom that maybe didn’t have your name.”

Marino: “I still do. I’m going to the bathroom right now.”

Is this the same “Party Down” that failed to dominate cable television over a dozen years ago? Mostly. The show’s original creators, John Enbom, Dan Etheridge, Rob Thomas and Paul Rudd, remain, as executive producers, and Enbom oversees a small staff of writers. The party-a-week structure also endures, as does the original cast — with the exception, based on the five episodes provided in advance, of Lizzy Caplan.

“All of us, for the entire 13 years since we stopped shooting the show, all we wanted to do is make more ‘Party Down,’” the show’s lead, Adam Scott (“Parks and Recreation,” “Severance”), said in a separate interview last month. “We all would have been there for free.”

But the world has changed in the dozen or so years since the original run was canceled. So have the actors. Unknowns or barely knowns when the show debuted, most have since become household names. (The others? Depends on the household.) And they’ve all seen the current crop of disappointing reboots and reprises. “Party Down” could just be the rare show to get it right, mixing the perfect cocktail of star power, nostalgia, growth and gags.

Then again, the characters never put a lot of muscle into bartending. So here’s a Zen koan for a deeply un-Zen show: Can you throw the same party twice?

Are we having fun yet?

The first run of “Party Down” was both structural marvel and joke spectacular. Each episode was simultaneously a workplace comedy, a hangout comedy and a procedural — a sitcom that never sat down. The celebrations it featured — birthdays, after parties — typically bordered the entertainment industry and nearly all of the cater waiters harbored industry dreams of their own.

Those dreams eluded them, which fueled the philosophical inquiry at the show’s center.

“What we were asking was: How long do you chase the dream?” Thomas, one of the creators, said. “When do you grow up? When do you quit banging your head against the wall?”

The “Party Down” staff are all trying to make it, as actors, screenwriters and comedians. (Marino’s Ron, the manager, has a different dream: a Soup ’R Crackers franchise.) Only Henry (Scott), who has traded beer-commercial celebrity for free-floating despair, has opted out. The actors were trying back then to make it, too. None of the original cast — Caplan, Ryan Hansen, Jane Lynch, Marino, Scott, Starr — were anything like famous when the show began. Acting in a comedy about the entertainment industry’s has-beens, also-rans and never-wills resonated with the cast, sometimes uncomfortably.

“It felt so close to home, this show, because I felt like I could be a caterer the next day easily,” Hansen said.

Scott, who at the time had yet to play a lead, then shared that sense of career tenuousness. The cast felt deeply connected to the show in those first seasons, he said, and protective of it. “We just wanted to do it forever, because it made us feel better,” he said. “It really did.”

The salaries, though small, kept a few of the actors on the sunny side of financial precarity. The camaraderie helped, too. (That camaraderie remains; I had four of the actors together on a video call, and I have never heard grown men exchange so many “Love yous.”) Several actors separately compared the original shoot to summer camp.

That genuine affection altered the show’s tone. Some first season episodes included “edgy” humor — gay jokes, post-racial jokes. (“It’s cringey, yeah,” Starr said.) But the creators quickly realized they didn’t need that edge. The show was sadder than that. Funnier, too. The characters are screw-ups, sure, but the show suggests that everyone is a screw-up, especially after an hour at an open bar. So maybe the best thing is to find common cause as you pass the hors d’oeuvres.

“It’s about people who think that they’re going to find happiness in something out there,” Lynch said. “But what they have right in front of them is really quite sweet.”

Lynch shot the first eight episodes. Then she had to leave for the Fox show “Glee.” Marino hired a stripper for her wrap party. The stripper, Lynch recalled, smelled of French fries. The show went on, with Jennifer Coolidge replacing Lynch for two episodes and Megan Mullally, the only actor who was already well-known, coming in for the final 10.

The creators believed that it would keep going, even though, according to Nielsen, the Season 2 finale attracted only 74,000 viewers. Starz had other plans. Those plans didn’t involve letting the creators take the show elsewhere. “Party Down” languished.

One decade, zero dinners

If the original run argued that it’s healthier to let some dreams die, the creators and the cast could never quite manage that. There were talks, every year or so, of getting the crew back together — for a special, for a movie, for a move to another network. Friends and fans often asked Marino about it.

“I was like, ‘They’re working on it,’” he said. “‘It’s going to happen! Right around the corner!’” It took him eight or nine years to accept that maybe that corner wasn’t coming.

Then in 2019, Starz appointed Jeffrey Hirsch as its new president and chief executive. Thomas reached out to Hirsch and began pitching the show again. Hard. This time, Starz said yes.

That was only the first hurdle. The actors had conflicts and prior commitments now. The revival was approved in the summer of 2021, with production scheduled for early 2022. Lynch was to begin rehearsing a Broadway musical. Scott was making the Apple TV+ show “Severance.” Mullally had booked a movie being shot in Idaho.

Somehow a six-week window was found, even though that window involved flying Mullally to Los Angeles every weekend and back to Sun Valley by Monday.

“We could never get together for dinner for a decade,” Etheridge, a creator, said. “But when we came to shoot the show, everybody was there.”

Everybody except for Caplan, who had signed onto the FX series “Fleishman Is in Trouble.” (Asked whether Caplan might make a surprise appearance in Episode 6, Starz declined to comment.) Enbom had originally structured this new season around the on-again-off-again relationship between Henry and Caplan’s Casey. He had to restructure it, adding a new character, a studio executive played by Jennifer Garner. The revival’s first episode takes time out to heckle Caplan: Casey, now a successful comedian, can’t make a crew reunion.

“She’s shooting in New York,” Starr’s Roman, still an aspiring “hard sci-fi” writer, says. “Too big time for the likes of us.”

There were fewer jokes in real life. Hansen tried to make light of the situation. “Listen, we get it,” he said. “She had a job, whatever. I mean, I personally turned down a Marvel movie to do ‘Party Down.’”

“Tell that to everybody,” he added.

But just about everyone described themselves as heartbroken, including Caplan. “If I think about it for too long, I start to cry,” she wrote in an email. She sent cupcakes to the shoot.

The bow tie abides

Hollywood has transformed in the years since “Party Down” first concluded, and in some ways the show has, too. Gratuitous boobs are gone now. And the catering crew, once blindingly white, has become more diverse with the inclusion of two new regulars: Sackson, a YouTube-style content creator played by Tyrel Jackson Williams, and Lucy, a chef played by Zoë Chao who styles herself as a “food artist.”

Yet, the sweet-sour, slightly funky flavor of “Party Down” — like a margarita made with off-brand liquor — is mostly unaltered. This seems to be the rare revival that understands what made the original work, yet can still move (or move just enough to include the occasional TikTok dance challenge) with the times.

“We kept doing what we’d always been doing, just with new details,” Enbom said. “Because society certainly has not changed into a more wholesome place.”

Have the returning characters changed? That depends on how much you and your therapist believe that change is possible. “They’re still the same lovable knuckleheads,” Mullally said. “Most of these people haven’t really moved on, or they haven’t really become any happier, or more fulfilled in their lives.”

Slinging hors d’oeuvres hits different and more darkly in midlife. Still, the creators and the cast didn’t want the revival to feel like a bummer.

“It’s going to be fun watching the characters try to claw their way toward something other than their current circumstances,” Scott promised.

And if not exactly “fun,” then certainly relatable. “Really who gets what they want in this life?” Lynch said.

She probably meant that rhetorically. But the “Party Down” die-hards, Lynch included, did get what they wanted, a third season. And they seem to have delighted in making it, though Marino joked that he’d had to slim down before he could fit into his signature pink bow tie.

“Had to work off that neck fat,” he said. “Got my neck nice and lean.”

Slipping on that outfit was a little more stressful for Chao, a newcomer. She had watched the show, years after its debut, while working a food-service survival job herself. “Party Down” had made her feel less alone. She didn’t want to ruin it. “I whispered to myself every day, going onto set, ‘Be the least funny, but by as little as possible,’” she said.

Williams expressed similar gratitude and anxiety. “Everyone was so sweet and welcoming from the very beginning,” he said. “It never felt like an intimidating environment.” And yet, he added, “there was still like this insane fear.”

The returning cast faced related, if less acute, worries. They have been in the business long enough to understand how revivals can go wrong. (A few of them had even appeared in revivals that flopped.) But they were reassured by the scripts, written by Enbom and a small staff, which suggested a continuity of character and tone and food-poisoning-induced body horror. There was also the pleasure of being together again — a little older, a little grayer, but still able to drop a tray on cue.

Will the ratings for this coming season be better? Comfortingly, they can’t get much worse. But the cast and creative team are counting on the show’s turning enough heads that Starz will greenlight a fourth season. (“You better believe I’m not missing that one,” Caplan wrote.)

Though Starr is inclined to cynicism, he sounded only mildly sardonic in discussing this ambition. “I really do hope we’re allowed to come back and do it again and keep up this little charade we’ve got going,” he said.

Hansen put it a bit more pragmatically. “In 12 years, people are going to love Season 3.”
