So way back in 2010, the British magazine NME (New Music Express) published a multi-page spread about the band. In that article, “journalist” Luke Lewis wrote:

Both men are rail-thin something Way attributes to not eating, rather than exercise, which he hates. For the new albume he wanted to look staving and on-the-run, though he actually looks healthy, certainly in comparison with his Xanax and cocaine days pre-Black Parade, when he ballooned to 200 pounds and got so blitzed his trousers fell down onstage. Back then, unkind souls dubbed him the emo Meat Loaf, such was his shambolic demeanour. Now he looks more like Christina Ricci. In the background lurks guitarist Ray Toro the archetypal heavy metal nerd, with corkscrew hair and a wheedling voice. He doesnt look starving and on-the-run: when he takes off his Randy Rhodes, I notice doughy love handles spilling over his belt.

MCR was set to preform at the NME music awards a few months later, in February of 2011. At that show, they preformed in ski masks.

When Frank and Gerard were asked about why they did so, in an interview, Frank explained:

“[it’s] about the music, not the messengers, you know?”

My Chemical Romance received the award for “Best Music Video” that night, and when present with the award Gerard said this in his speech:

“Don’t ever let the media tell you what your body is supposed to look like. You’re beautiful the way you are. Stay beautiful[…]”

Me: the time they performed fully dressed up in black and with mascs at NME Award 2011 because some stupid ass journalist started talking about their looks more than their music.

wait sry in the tags of a post u put “make a dig at nme for being dicks to ray” i mean im in pretty deep but have not heard this lore. can u explain

nme did an interview with mcr during DD and the journalist who wrote it called ray fat but praised gerard for getting thin by way of an eating disorder. the band then played at the shockwaves nme awards and to protest the garbage interview, they all wore the exact same suit and played the show wearing balaclavas

That MCR primer. I swore I wouldn't read it all but then I did. I knew most of it, but what I didn't was GREAT. (Vampire Money in balaclavas at the NME awards. That's my shady, body-positive band!) I had a few questions I was hoping would be cleared up that weren't though. I had heard G went missing in Tokyo '04 and they posted something on the site about it? Could be fan lore, but they didn't get too into what was actually said/evidence to clear up what is and isn't true.

I only became a fan in 2005 so I’m not an expert on that part of mcr history. Here’s a recording of Frank sounding really worried after Gerard went missing. Other than this, I don’t really know much about it, so hopefully someone else can help us out here.

Rant time

Twenty One Pilots are nominated for worst artist at the 2017 NME awards… Worst artist. Okay. WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU TAKE TIME OUT OF YOUR DAY TO VOTE THIS AMAZING BAND AS THE WORST BAND OF THE YEAR? Their lyrics are honestly the best I’ve ever come across. Their music is catchy and different and IM SORRY ITS NOT THE SAME AS EVERY SHITTY SONG ON THE RADIO… SORRY IT ACTUALLY HAS SOUL AND WASNT CREATED WITH THE SOULD INTENTION OF MAKING MONEY, BUT RATHER SO SAVE PEOPLES LIVES. They are two guys who have worked up from nothing, been through struggles. They are literally the nicest and most genuine guys on the planet that just ooze talent and emotion. I understand everyone is entitled to their own opinion (personally I don’t think there should be a worst artist category because that’s just mean and puts down an artists work) but this… this is just so wrong. I wouldn’t mine so much but the people nominated for the best artist awards… hmmm (not necessarily bands, Green Day is nominated for best band which I’m more than down for). Ahh well let’s not forget about all the Grammies they’re nominated for by people who actually know what they’re doing… Also they’re in good company… MCR were nominated for both best and worst album in 2010 and TSTM were nominated for worst artist… woo.

Basically I should stop being a winey bitch but this has been building up and I needed to let it out
