Snip3down Retires From Professional Halo But Hints At His Next Step
Tumblr media
One of the Halo legends has formally put down his or her weapons. Snip3down made a lengthy farewell video today to announce his departure from the Halo franchise and to offer a brief career overview. From his days of winning MLG Halo 3 tournaments with Str8 Rippin to his year in Halo Infinite, Snip3down remained one of the best players in the scene. And despite not achieving the results that he most likely hoped for in Infinite, he was still a permanent fixture in top eights and beyond across multiple rosters. Snip3down and the FaZe roster saw initial success over the last year of the Halo Championship Series, placing third at the HCS Kickoff Major in Raleigh before middling results led to roster changes. Snip3down ultimately left the FaZe roster to compete with eUnited. Although his time with eUnited was limited, the team did get a top-six finish at HCS Orlando and a top-eight placing at the HCS World Championship. Snip3down retires from professional Halo as one of the best players in the franchise’s history. Across Halo 3, Reach, 5, 2 Anniversary, and Infinite, Snip3down was one of the most consistently successful players to ever touch the game, racking up nearly $1.5 million in total tournament winnings over the course of his 14-year Halo career. While Snip3down is saying goodbye to Halo, his farewell video does tease his next move—and it certainly seems like fans who still want to see Snip3down playing games competitively won’t be disappointed. Throughout the video, Snip3down talks about his love for esports and competing in video games and mentions his brief stint as a Call of Duty player in addition to his Halo exploits. One game is conspicuously missing from the retrospective of his career, however: Apex Legends, the game that Snip3down left to return to Halo. It’s been widely rumored and leaked that Snip3down might be making a return to Apex for the upcoming season of the Apex Legends Global Series. His potential squad had previously been leaked multiple times, most notably by Snip3down himself. FaZe Clan’s entrance into Apex was also teased by data-mined esports org weapon skins, of which FaZe was the only org represented that did not already have an ALGS squad. Notably, Snip3down has not removed FaZe from any of his social media accounts, despite announcing his retirement. “You know what they say,” Snip3down says to the camera at the end of his farewell video. “When one door closes…” If the leaks and teases hold true, he’ll be joined by strong teammates: Albralelie, one of the members of TSM’s Apex dynasty in the early days of the Apex Legends Global Series, and SlurpeeG, who previously played in the last year of ALGS Pro League with SXG and G-Force, and is widely considered to be one of the best controller players in North America. The trio has competed in various tournaments over the past several months under the team name ASS (an acronym formed by the first initial of each of their handles, of course). If FaZe does enter Apex with Snip3down in tow, it will be the first time the team has a full competitive squad in the game. He wouldn’t be the only player on FaZe competing in the ALGS Pro League next year, however, since NICKMERCS has also qualified with his team Tripods. But for now, a legend has left the game where he first made his mark and where he became one of the best players in the world. Snip3down’s Halo career might not be infinite, but his legacy surely will be. Read the full article

Chuck 'Cdew' Dewland is an American professional World of Warcraft player.
Biography(edit)
Cdew started playing World of Warcraft in Vanilla, after his fiance’s dad introduced him to the game. He first hit the esports scene as 'Tenderloin' on Team Evil Geniuses at an ESL Extreme Masters III Global Final in March 2009.(1). He made it to the North American Regionals that same year and placed third in the tournament.
Tumblr media
In 2010, Cdew competed alongside Azael and Woundman for Evil Geniuses. The team placed 1st in the ESL Extreme Masters Season IV World Championship Finals. Cdew also competed alongside Azael and Woundman for Evil Geniuses in 2010 Major League Gaming Pro Circuit Raleigh. The team placed second losing against NerdStomper Blue.
In 2012, Evil Geniuses brought in Talbadar to join Cdew and Azael. This was the first year that Cdew reached the Arena World Championship. The team placed 4th.
Cdew continued as a first class World of Warcraft Arena player, returning to the 2014 BlizzCon World Championships with Snutz and Venruki under the team name 3 Amigos. Placing 3rd overall.
Cdew returned to the BlizzCon Finals in 2016 with team Method NA consisting of Snutz, Smexxin and Beanslayer. This was a hard fought tournament, however they lost to Splyce in the Grand Final, earning them 2nd place.
In April 2017, Method renamed Cdew’s team Method Reborn, and Smexxin was replaced with Samiyam. Despite this change the team missed out on qualifying for the World Championships in 2017.
In January of 2018, Method Reborn was disbanded, and Cdew formed a new team with Mes and Trill named Method Orange. It was this team that finally brought Cdew his biggest success yet, winning the 2018 Arena World Championship at his fifth attempt at doing so, winning a career best $120,000 in prize money for the team.

Post-Raleigh/Pre-SB Interview with GGA Dizzy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up in this series of Post-MLG Raleigh interviews is one of my personal favorite players to watch, GGA Dizzy.  He is what a I consider the highest caliber of a character specialist.  He mains one of my favorite characters, Johnny Cage, and does so at the highest level.  His tournament placings include 3rd at Ultimate Fighting Game Tournament 8, 5th at PowerUp 2012, 2nd at Seasons Beatings: Summer Slam 2012, and 7th at MLG Anaheim just to name a few. Dizzy trains and is sponsored by the Galloping Ghost Arcade located in Brookfieldn, IL.  Other top players who also train at GGA include Han, Wafflez, Soonk, 16 Bit, Jeremiah and Moe30w.
In this interview, Dizzy and I discuss his performance at MLG Raleigh, his matches with LionHeart, m2dave, and KN Detroitballn, the upcoming team battle between GGA and CoCo at Seasons Beatings, a look back at some of his favorite moments since becoming competitive Mortal Kombat player, and much more.  You can follow Dizzy on Twitter @GGA_Dizzy.  I would like to thank Dizzy for the the time and wish him luck at his upcoming tournaments.  Here is my interview with GGA Dizzy:
Q: Please state your name and how long you have been competitively gaming.
A: My name is Aaron Davis and I would say my first game that I took seriously enough to be considered competitive was World of Warcraft Arena in around 2006/2007. For any of the old WoW players who know what I’m talking about, I got Gladiator during Seasons 2, 3 and 4. As far fighting games, I started playing them competitively-minded in 2011 with Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Mortal Kombat. Going into my first tournament, UFGT7 in May 2011, I would say I put equal time into MvC3 and MK. From that tournament I met a lot of MK players including Michaelangelo and 16 bit. I fell in love with the MK scene and stuck that out as my main game ever since. Had I not met those people I did at that tournament, who knows, I could have been an MvC3 player instead.
Q: How do you feel about your overall performance at MLG Raleigh?
A: I don’t think anyone is ever 100% happy with their performance at tournaments; all they can be is content with how they did. I would say that I am content with how I did, against the opponents I had to fight.
Q: Let’s talk about your Winners Bracket Round 3 match against LionHeart.  Were you familiar with LionHeart prior to your match?
A: I had never seen him play, but I was told he was a Sub-Zero player that was good. Other than that I didn’t know much about him.
Q: What was going through your mind when you were at the character select screen after the first two games?
A: Actually, quite early on in the match I was frustrated at having trouble performing even the most basic actions. I felt as though I was playing delayed. He was able to jump out when he shouldn’t have, I was having trouble timing anything right, and I felt as though I was unable to play my game.
Q: I think that was the first time I’ve seen you use a character other than Cage in tournament, was it sort of a desperation move on your part?
A: There is only one name that has ever made me switch from Cage in tournament; that name is BenQ. I’m just joking; I haven’t had any problem playing on the BenQ monitors off-stream in tournament or casuals. I even did fine shortly after the match against m2dave’s Freddy, a match that is arguably harder than Sub-Zero for Cage.
In all seriousness, the answer to the previous question is why I switched. Despite Sub-Zero being a character that controls the Cage match well, I was not able to play my character comfortably. It wasn’t so much desperation, as it was a necessity. With my basic Kenshi I felt I wouldn’t need to rely on such timing-specific things as I would Cage.
Q: In hindsight, do you wish you would’ve stuck with Cage? Or were you satisfied with how you played Kenshi?
A: I don’t feel as though sticking with Cage would have done anything productive. I had already tried in two games to play Cage and unfortunately could not execute at the level needed. At that time I was not playing Cage at the highest level. I felt given the circumstances, I am fine with how my Kenshi played. I did not have any alt that I felt was tournament ready. I play my Kenshi occasionally against 16 bit to give him matchup experience for his Kitana, and that is where most of my Kenshi play comes in. I don’t particularly like playing the character even, I just use him to give local players matchup experience. It kind of pains me to use the character. Nonetheless he is my second best character.
Q: Will you counter-pick more often in the future?
A: I wouldn’t count on it. Any time, despite how bad the match, if I feel I can play Cage at the level I need to succeed, I will use him. If the game reaches the point at which I feel Cage cannot reasonably compete, I will just retire from travelling as opposed to switching mains.
Q: After that match, you went on to 3-0 m2dave in Losers Bracket, talk about that set.  Is the Freddy/Cage match-up one that you are generally comfortable with?
A: I would say that I am familiar with the match, but not comfortable with it. I definitely think it is a bad match for Cage. His options are limited, but he at least has some to make the Freddy player second guess himself. Fortunately, almost all the reads I made paid off and essentially everything that could have gone my way in that set did. On that note, I felt as though he wasn’t playing to his full potential. I have a lot of respect for m2dave despite him being a coward and if we were to meet again in tournament again it would very, very easily end up differently.
Q: Your last opponent of the tournament was KN Detroitballn, what took place in that match?
A: My match against Detroit was a hard fought 1-3, with every match going down to the last round.  He used Kabal every match, and needless to say that is tough for Cage. I played pretty well, but could have done better and adapted better to his playstyle, but he is a very skilled played and I knew going into it that it would be an uphill battle.
Q: Talk about your overall experience at MLG Raleigh.
A: I had fun; it’s always great hanging out with everyone at these tournaments. Some of the most fun of every tournament is just chilling with all the players. That is one of the main reasons I keep going to these tournaments is the community. The competition is important, but if I didn’t have a good time going to these tournaments, it wouldn’t be worth it.
Q: Did you learn anything about yourself as a player during the tournament?
A: I would say that I didn’t learn anything explicitly new about myself as a player. This tournament felt as though it was another one in the books.
Q: How often do you play Mortal Kombat on a week-to-week basis?
A: I would say my average is 2-3 days a week. Some weeks, like this one, I played more because Slips and PL both visited. I normally play when I go to Galloping Ghost Arcade, which is the main place where I get most of my game time in.
Q: Do you work on other characters in casuals? Or do you use Cage most of the time?
A: I would say I spend the vast majority of my time playing Cage in casuals. Probably around 80-90% of the time I’m using Cage.
Q: A lot of people in the MK Community see Johnny Cage as one of the easier characters to play/master; do you feel the same way?
A: I would say he is pretty easy to learn and get a grasp on. I don’t think he is very easy to master though, at the highest level he is one of the harder characters to win with.
One of Cage’s problems is he does not have any dominate matches against most of the higher tier characters. Nearly every one of these characters he has to play their game. He has to deal with their zoning, gimmicks and setups for a chance to start his offense and get the opportunity to deal damage. He can’t simply avoid his opponent’s game plan to win; he must navigate through it to start his offense.
At the highest level of play, this is a lot to ask. Nearly all the top players are very experienced with fighting Cage, so you’re not going to be able to just “go nuts” and get a win when you are close. You have to be able to tell if the person likes to get out of pressure by armoring, poking, jumping, or just waiting and hoping to be pushed out or looking for a specific move. Unless you can accurately judge and adapt to a player’s style, you will have a very hard time succeeding with Cage against high level players.
On the other hand, other characters are able to “play their game” against Cage at first, instead of relying on adaption. In a tournament setting, being able to play to your characters strong suit as opposed to adapting is always preferable. Yet, this will almost never happen for someone who mains Cage.
Q: What is it about Cage that makes you so loyal tothe character?
A: I love playing a character that has bad zoning. I hate using projectiles. I will likely play a character in Injustice that doesn’t have a projectile, if one exists. I guess I have stayed loyal to Cage so long because his projectile is so bad, and I don’t feel the burden of having to use it.
Q: Do you feel that you are the best Cage player out there?
A: Well, Tom Brady would say I am outclassed by the likes of JOP and I am inclined to agree, but if people want to think otherwise I won’t stop them.
Q: Will you work on anything new (characters or match-ups) in preparation for Seasons Beatings?
A: Not particularly. I will continue to train with all the same people I have been. I won’t be paying additional attention to any one matchup.
Q: Let’s talk about the CoCo vs. GGA team battle, who do you view as CoCo’s single biggest threat to yourself?
A: I’m planning on sitting on the bench while Wafflez OCVs.
Q: Who will be on GGA’s roster come game time?
A: I believe these are all the people going, in order of who the best “house hosts” are:
Jeremiah
Soonk
HAN
MOE30W
Fill Pops
Wafflez
Dizzy
16 Bit
Q: Is there anything that you feel that you have to accomplish as personal goal for yourself as a competitive gamer?
A: There is only one goal I have when it comes to playing competitively. I want to never stop having fun doing this. I’ve never felt like playing MK or doing anything related to it has been a chore, and I feel like I am just hanging out with my friends. Anything I earn through placement is just a bonus.
Q: This is a question I’ve wanted to ask you for a while, what sort of music do you listen to during your matches?
A: I almost always defer and say it’s a secret or something like that just to be funny and keep the joke going, but here is some exclusive info signed to my best fan, CRUM. I almost always listen to metal.
Q: Looking back on your competitive gaming history, what is your personal favorite match that you played in?
A: There are so many matches I don’t know if I can pick just one. A few that I enjoyed the most were:
Finally beating 16 bit in tournament in the grand finals of a local. He beat me 3-0 to reset it, then I won a close 3-2 set.
The MLG Arena fight against Tyrant. At that point we were 1-1 against each other in tournament and we had an idea of each other’s play style and I felt that fight was extremely high level play. We both were playing close to peak and it really could have gone either way at any time. Tyrant is an amazing player and I can honestly say if we fight again there is no way to predict how it will go.
Beating Riu48 in the runback at Anaheim. At Columbus he 0-3’d me decisively. I was clearly out classed. However, I was able to win 3-0 against him at Anaheim, in the same situation, loser gets 9th and winner goes to top 8. I was very happy to be put in the same situation a little over 2 months later and be able to show that I leveled up. We were able to play it out again at the arena as well, as he was taken in as a replacement for one of the people who could not make it.
Q: Is there anything that I didn’t cover in this interview that you would like to? Any shout-outs?
A: I want to give a big shout-out to Galloping Ghost Arcade. They have really fostered the MK scene in the Chicago area. I don’t think we would be as well-practiced or have nearly as much fun as we do without GGA. I feel so welcome there; it is like my home away from home. The biggest shout-out of all goes to GGA’s owner Doc Mack. He is by far our biggest supporter. Also, shout-out to all GGA team members and the Chicago players who come to GGA to help us level up including (Southside) Jim and pimpimjim.
Of course, shout-out to the MK community as a whole. Without you guys, I would probably be wasting my life playing much less fun fighting game with a much less fun community.
As a Cage player myself, it’s an honor to interview a player of your caliber.  Thanks for the time, good luck at Seasons Beatings and I will catch up with you before Dallas.
Thank you CRUM, you were always a big supporter of mine and I appreciate it!

Post-Raleigh Interview with Frank "KH Showtime" Occhione
Tumblr media Tumblr media
KH Showtime (Left) VS Clint The Beast (Right)
JustCRUM's post-Raleigh interviews continue with one of the "dark horses" of the Mortal Kombat Community, KH Showtime.  Showtime is an underrated player who trains with Kombat Houston out in Texas.  I made an effort to pursue an interview with him after seeing first-hand how well he performed at Raleigh.  Showtime has flown below the radar at major tournaments despite consistently placing in the top 16.  It was MLG Raleigh where he broke through and shocked the community on his way toward a 6th place finish, which was good for $1,000.  Showtime used primarily his "main", Reptile, and turned a lot of heads with his Sonya gameplay.  This interview covers everything from his gameplay at MLG Raleigh to what he will be doing in preparation of the Fighter Arena.
His next events will be the MLG Fall Fighter Arena (September 15) and MLG Dallas (November 2-4).  Thanks to KH Showtime for taking time to answer these questions.  You can follow Showtime on Twitter "@KHShowtime".  Look below to see Showtime's set against Pig of the Hut, you can also find more of his games from MLG Raleigh at http://tv.majorleaguegaming.com/events/21-summer-championship#1877.  Here is the interview:
Q: State your name and how long you have been competitively gaming.
A: My name is Frank Occhione, been playing fighting games since Super Nintendo, competitively since MK9 came out.
Q: What was your mindset going into MLG Raleigh? Did you expect to place as high as you did?
A: I was really nervous for my first match on stage vs. KingRey, but after that I was really comfortable, I was aiming for top 8 so yes I did expect it.
Q: What/Who was your favorite match/opponent that you played at Raleigh?  Describe what went down and why it was your favorite.
A: Favorite match was def Detroit, it was my chance to prove myself, had to make it count.
Q: You displayed some excellent Sonya gameplay that not many of your opponents were prepared for, is Sonya a character that you have been working on for a while?
A: Yeah I’ve been playing her since Texas Showdown but seriously just started putting in the work in training.
Q: Will you always consider Reptile your “main” despite how often and effectively that you may use Sonya?
A: Reptile will always be my favorite character; he's so stealth and stylish.  But in tournament I will be using Sonya, she’s too good.
Q: Can GamerBlake90 take any of the credit for your Sonya gameplay?
A: No, like I said I’ve been playing her since Showdown, if anyone I’ve stolen setups from Riu48, but Blake is godlike and is a great Sonya.
Q: Do you feel that your overall performance at Raleigh came as a shock to people?
A: No one saw me doing well except the Houston team, Pig, and Fly. So yes I believe people were shocked.
Q: Do you feel that you can continue to consistently place high at these major tournaments?
A: Yes, Kombat Houston is training harder than ever for the arena and Dallas; I feel more of KH will be seen in top 8 at Dallas.
Q: What is your mindset looking ahead towards the Fall Fighter Arena and MLG Dallas?
A: In it to win it, we are training hard and are not going to disappoint the community.
Q: Have you been working on any other characters besides Sonya? Will we see anything new out of you at the next two MLG tournaments?
A: Been working on Sonya, Reptile of course, a little Kitana and Kung Lao, we’ll see who I’ll be using come the arena and Dallas.
Q: Many consider you as one of the “dark horses” in the Mortal Kombat Community in reference to tournament play? Do you relish in this role or do you feel as if you are under looked?
A: Def under looked, like I said I’ve placed top 16 at every major I’ve been to except Anaheim, no one understands the training we’ve been doing the pass year.
Q: What did it feel like to not only defeat, but 3-0 such dangerous players like KN Detroitballn and CoCo FOREVER KING early in the tournament?
A: It felt great, I finally got my chance against really good top players and I did it, 3-0ing them was just the icing on the cake.
Q: Do you feel that being a top player in a game like Mortal Kombat makes it easier to fall and have people criticize you?
A: No, I personally don’t care what people think about me, I train hard.  Win or lose I’m proud of what me and KH has done.
Q: Talk about your matches with Pig of the Hut.  Did you gain some much needed knowledge about the Kenshi match-up? Or are you generally comfortable going toe-to-toe with Kenshi players?
A: After watching our matches I’m pretty comfortable now, so yeah playing him def helped my knowledge for future fights.
Q: What are your thoughts about the future of Mortal Kombat at a competitive level?
A: I hope it stays alive until Injustice at least, don’t want it to die after Dallas because I’m still going to be playing.
Q: Does competitive gaming play a huge role in your life? Or do you view it more as a hobby?
A: It does play a role.  People from work ask about the tourneys, my girl hosts for us in her condo, it’s great, and we have a great community.
Q: Do you have your sights set on anyone in particular for when the Fall Fighter Arena rolls around?
A: Def Mr. Pig, I want that Kenshi again, I’m ready, def would love to play Maxter as well.
Q: What is your opinion on NetherRealm Studios’ latest production, “Injustice: Gods Among Us”?
A: Love it, I will be Batman of America, the walk speed looks kind of slow for me but I’ll adjust.
Q: Is there anything else that I didn’t cover that you would like to? Any shout-outs?
A: Shout-outs to KH Cat, KH Scar, Starcharger, David, VSM crew, j360, all of KH too many to shout-out lol, shout-outs to justcrum for this awesome interview, shout-outs to Detroit =) and the whole MK community
Q: Give me a top 3 prediction for the Fall Fighter Arena if you feel comfortable doing so.
A: Top 3 Predictions 1. Showtime 2. Maxter  3. Pig
