there are a lot of reasons the mogadorians should have been allowed to integrate with human society post-war, and one of them is that adam needs to get up on stage drunk at a karaoke bar and belt angel with a shotgun at the top of his lungs

AU where Five meets a group of Mogadorian teenagers in Miami and befriends them. And they become the reason why he betrays the Garde. They become his first and only friends. They do everything together, go to arcades, the movies, do stupid shit... but Five doesn't realise they're Mogs. They know who he is because they saw his scars once but didn't tell him.
Eventually they decide it's better to tell him since they don't wanna lie to him and he reacts basically the same way he did with Ethan. They manage to convince him their ways aren't that bad and that he should join them. Five doesn't know what to say. He feels like they've lying. Like they're going to kill him as soon as they get the chance.
But then again, they are his friends. They knew who he was and they didn't do anything to him. Maybe the Mogs really aren't so bad... Rey told him all kinds of fucked up stories about them but the Mogs he's been hanging out with are nothing like that. They're kind, funny and smart. And they're willing to let him join them instead of killing him.
So he accepts. They all train together, helping Five with his Legacies. Five is grateful but he still feels like he shouldn't be here. After some time he gets an order to meet up with the Garde. He's excited, obviously.
If the Mogs were this amazing, he can't imagine how much better the Garde will be.
It turns out they're actually much worse.
They treat Five like an outsider. "The Mogs never treated me like this" he thinks. "Maybe I was wrong about the Garde." He didn't want to betray them before but after meeting them and seeing how they treat him, he makes up his mind.
That's all I have rn. I had this idea for a while. It gives Five another reason to betray the Garde and join the Mogs. And it makes him less lonely :-)

Identity of Devdan
Devdan is an integral character in Number Eight's backstory as after the death of his Cepan, he acted as a mentor to Eight. Devdan is described as 'spiritual man' by Eight and was able to recognize Eight after initially meeting him in the form of a rabbit.
Devdan taught Eight about Hinduism and inspired his future Vishnu disguise and his forms as well as trained him in Indian Martial Arts - not only that, he guided him in using his Legacies. According to Eight, Devdan never returned to their usual meeting spot and it's assumed he was killed by the Mogadorians.
Now most people assumed that Devdan was Pittacus in disguise but Pittacus was confirmed dead by Malcolm as he died in his garage shortly before the Garde and their Cepan arrived on Earth and his skeleton is still there to prove it. My theory is that Devdan is a Demi-Loric and the son or descendant of the Oracle - a female Garde with especially strong precognitive abilities and the creator of the paintings in the Himalayan Cave.
I believe this because the Oracle secluded herself within the Loric Cave in the Himalayas which isn't far from where Eight grew up in India. This would explain Devdan's knowledge on Legacies and how he was able to recognize Eight as if the Oracle was his mother she could've foresaw their meeting.
TLDR - Devdan wasn't Pittacus and instead was a Demi-Loric son/descendant of the Oracle

Lorien is actually fine, and the Mogadorian's only ever pretended to invade. They're actually Lorien's closest allies
Everything was all just a bad taste prank from Setrakus gone horribly wrong when the Cepan's ran off to Earth without ever hearing the 'gotcha!'.
All the Mog's guns were actually set to stun and there was a hell of a party afterward up until the Garde's families were like 'where is my kid 🤨'
Four has his dream from the first book where he sees the fighting on Lorien and he's just like,
"Henri, they were using paint guns!"
"I'm swearing to you, Henri, no one was bleeding or anything, it looked like they were using cans of silly string"
"Henri, I'm dead serious, one of the Mogadorian's had a water pistol"
And Henri is just like 😔 the trauma of war is too much for my poor boy, he's in denial

Adelina's character arc in The Power of Six was done so well. I love how she slowly went from being an incompetent Cepan to one who was serious about her duties again, and doing what she had to do to keep Marina safe.
Adelina examined the footsteps Crayton left, checking to make sure a Mogadorian didn't make them. Even though she acted like the Lorien and Mogadore stuff wasn't real.
She tentatively hugged Marina. She hesitated to hug her back, but she still did it. It's been a while since I read The Power of Six, so I can't remember why she did that, but it's worth noting. Because Adelina gradually started becoming affectionate with Marina again.
During Mass, Adelina started looking back at Marina. Like she used to do when she was a serious Cepan.
Adelina decided to open Marina's Chest with her. This provides more evidence that she was serious about her duties again by this time. She also jokes around with Marina while she uses telekinesis to carry her. Showing that they're friends again.
She and Marina hugged each other while crying. I can't remember when this happened. Can't remember if it was before or after Marina's Chest got opened. But this hug was important. It showed they were truly close again, and vulnerable with each other.
Adelina argued with Sister Dora at some point. Her defiance here showed that she no longer cared about the religious stuff, and was focused on her Cepan duties.
Adelina prepares to leave town with Marina when it's clear she's in danger.
She gives Marina her Loric pendant while Mogs are attacking the convent.
She arms herself with a knife during the attack, ready to defend herself and Marina. She dies fighting, wounding the Mog severely enough that he stops attacking. On a related note, Adelina's death could have been written better. Marina had telekinesis. She could have easily disarmed the Mog from a distance or killed him without touching him. It was so unnecessary for Marina to run while Adelina, the one without powers, fought the enemy.
Adelina's character development was done slowly, gradually, and realistically. That's why it's so good. Adelina doesn't have an instant personality switch after Marina gives her a speech, but she gradually becomes better over time. I love it. The Power of Six had some great writing. This was before this book series had those awful out of character moments.
It's amazing to see Adelina regaining her honor and then dying as a great Cepan warrior. This might be the first analysis about her character arc, too. I'm glad I was able to write this post.

I think it was dumb that none of the cêpans tried the approach of forming a family. The Mogadorians were looking for an adult and a kid so of course single parents are gonna be the main suspects they would have. But if you got married, maybe even add another kid to the mix, and either say your Garde is your child from a past relationship or if they look similar enough to your partner, no explanations needed. Boom, best cover ever.

I don't know if my previous ask pulled through, but I'm wondering if you have any favorite Human Garde character outside of the Fugitive Six?
It did, but I was debating on waiting on answering until I read Sam and Six's novellas because from what I've heard I think I'll really like Nemo and Max.
But right now I'm really interested in Einar. I don't know if I *like* him, but he's definitely trying to make a positive difference for the rest of the garde. His and Five’s relationship kinda gets me because they both get something out of it (Five gets Einar's legacy to calm him down, and Einar gets Five’s power), but sometimes it feels like Einar is kinda using/manipulating Five a little.
I REALLY like Vontessa (or however you spell her name) and the idea of some Mogadorian's also getting legacies. I definitely think Adam and Rex got some, but they're never mentioned? No one even really wonders about it except for Vontessa?? We don't know if John goes to check on Adam ever again after the end of the first series??I'm kinda mad about that part...sorry for mini mog rant...

It would have been beneficial to Five's key survival if Rey taught him more than to fight, and also to be a nature survivalist since he had all this knowledge that Five was largely dependent on. It was not only just being able to defend himself through physical combat or creative use of weaponry like killing the snake on the island or the first Mog they encountered in Canada, but also building a campfire, star navigation, sailing, negotiating weapon dealings (he had gotten a gun from a black market in Canada but we don't know if it was verbally negotiated or otherwise), cooking, raising livestock, basic farming and possible agricultural skills, medical skills (revealed in RtZ that Rey did actually teach Five that, not sure if that was solely surgical knowledge since knowing how to identify illnesses and heal them presents the idea that Rey could have potentially cured his illness), and possibly more.
There's a bunch of text that already supports Rey's ideas of how to protect Five, which are not only very passive but do little to help him learn how to survive properly (especially on his own, which is an issue Rey does not account for despite his illness), and is something Rey regrets too late
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As far as what we can gleam from the text, Rey only trained Five with a few days of martial art skills (the first day they were on the island) and then left Five to practice his routine indefinitely with jogging and the like.
It's also with this limited knowledge Five has that sets up the dynamic that structured a majority of Rey's teachings, mainly threatening Five's safety by implying the Mogadorians will come for them and capture or torture Five. And we see it used as a light threat, recalled by Five to get him to do simple chores like brush his teeth or make his bed (whether those were exaggerated examples or actual ones is unknown), and used to actually scare Five and reveal that he hasn't been training and had lied to Rey daily about his regiments (a genuinely frightening situation that Rey already uses as his go-to for reeling Five in but to an extreme extent, and a situation that betrays Five's trust in his Cêpan almost completely). And Five can do little about it when he's withheld from so much important information that could potentially save him, or at the very least make him more prepared for life and trust his Cêpan more. However, again, hiding was Rey's MO, and that limited knowledge made Five more susceptible to dangers that he does not know how to counter properly (see: Ethan).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, the Mogadorian threat could be an irrational point to make if Five was able to recall more that he couldn't die because of the charm, which is likely to happen if the threat of the Mogadorians were used more tactfully and honestly by Rey to emphasize ways to protect himself than just hiding, and what to do when he needs to hide.

Also an additional side note, following this text:
Tumblr media
It was already established in IAN4 that the Chest cannot be opened by Garde alone until their Cêpan dies, so it has to be unlocked by both. But Henri also specified that the Garde must have a Legacy first in order to open it, which Five at this point in the story does not have yet. It does nothing for Rey to say that Five can't look until he thinks he's ready, instead of referring to the fact he needs a Legacy first, which should both confirm Five is ready and that he can open the Chest. The series kept this rule consistent for all the Garde, so it's fair to assume Rey's negligence to specify was of his own standard on what marks Five as ready, but in a vague and dishonest manner that turns Five away from any hope that his Chest will be accessible to him one day.
Rey had the intention of protecting Five, but his methods were essentially a cruel game of keep away that left Five in the dark but made him entirely dependent on his Cêpan, which he lightly reflected on as a terrible practice when he failed to consider his poor health or the fact that Five refuses to take any action and much prefers if Rey did the hard labor. His character as a reflection of his way of raising Five is extremely passive and greatly protective, which ends with him being controlling and neglectful of Five and his agency. His methods of protection were bent on flight than fight (interestingly this compares Henri who traveled consistently to small towns and didn't teach John how to fight until his Legacies came in, and Adelina who only ensured Marina's safety in the physical sense in a single location with a small community for years). His poor communication with Five, the both of them spending hours apart and only talking when he's awake, when there's a task to do, or when he chastises Five, worsens with his decisions that fail Five because of his rigid inclination to tell Five little to nothing about anything about survival.
We don't know why he didn't teach Five how to fight earlier on, or at the very least if his health rendered him incapable of doing so, teach Five how to survive and sustain himself, learn how to interact with strangers and tell the innocent from the deceitful. He's only presented one opportunity to teach Five how to fight by killing the viper snake, since in all instances prior he's taken care of both their safety. He cooks all their meals and Five has shown little ability to provide for himself besides opening a coconut. He failed as a Cêpan in that he can't expect Five to survive outside the island based on an unknowable standard of strength that he's never determined Five ever surpassing, whether that's getting a Legacy, being wiser, having mental fortitude, or finding a resolve.

And it ruined Five's life.

i have not been active on this blog in a While and being very normal about my old hyperfixation lorien legacies, which has an absolute fuckload of characters to sort, has finally gotten me to crawl out of my hole.
[spoilers ahead for both lorien legacies and its sequel series!]
there is a LOT of ground to cover here, and i am mostly going to limit myself to sorting characters and themes from the first series, but my initial notes are:
probably one of the biggest overarching themes of the series is toxic birdsec, and the harm it can do to every aspect of a society or a person's life--on both a systematic level and an individual one--right down to their basic humanity. by extension it also goes into similarly fucked up lion and bird primary used as weapons and tools of abuse, and how they interplay with each other.
a large part of this stems from setrákus ra being The Worst Fucking Lion Bird Ever to Live, lmao. he's an interesting example of birdsec interplaying with cannibal badger, and also of a lion bird who's a cheetah in that he uses systems as tools to manipulate people instead of actually believing them. he hands out toxic systems like candy while peppering them with outright lies, and blithely admits that even the one that he's put centuries into building--mogadorian progress, and the great book--is at its heart just a ruse to run his cult on. the truth he pretends to worship and champion isn't external, objective truth--it's an extension of him. he is the ultimate truth. and the only truth he believes in is his cause, which is that he has the right and ability to own, make use of, and do whatever he sees fit with everything in existence. everyone and everything that could possibly be a shiny or a tool belongs to him.
one of the other overarching themes is toxic badger primary and secondary--cannibal badgering AHOY--as well as toxic lion primary, and it is a great deal less intentional than the bird cautionary tale part lmao
five is a bird snake with deeply toxic lion primary and bird secondary models, one of which he picked up after getting involved with a cult, and one of which he's had since his abusive birdsec guardian started amputating his masks by trying to apply actor bird to them. :') his brand of birdsplode and snakeburn make him horribly, horribly vulnerable to the cult, especially combined with focused, one-on-one gaslighting and manipulation from setrákus himself, and he has to burn his bird right to a crisp to break away from it. i am very biased and i have so much to say about my boy, but i plan to go in depth about this later
there are a LOT of lionsecs among the loric garde kids. the only surviving ones who aren't lionsecs are marina's badger and five's snake (the latter of which is heavily villainized, lol); number one is either a lionsec or a snakesec, maggie is either a birdsec or a badgersec, and we don't really see enough of hannu to be sure, but my guess is badgersec. in context, whatever these books are saying here i am not sure i like it lmao
this stands in contrast to the non-garde allies, minus adam, who end up being Part of the Gang. sam and lexa are birdsecs, and sarah and malcolm are both badgersecs.
speaking of adam, he is a lion snake with a cool, calculated double bird performance/model, who has been waiting all his life for a chance to go Absolutely Feral. there are a lot of ways in which he's a real shithead, which track given his life and circumstances up to then but are also real 😬 sometimes, but like, good for him. go ape shitt, kid
nine is an awful, AWFUL double lion who models/performs the worst parts of badger primary; he also uses lionsec stereotypes and methods to misdirect people, so that he can hurt, gaslight, prey on, and abuse them. it's genuinely interesting how he does it, and i could go on for a long time about it, but it's also Infuriating because the authors really want you to love him for being a ~charming jerk with a heart of gold,~ so that is for another post. in the sequel series he also picks up a nasty posthumous birdsec model from sandor to gleefully torture children with so lmfao
there seem to be a lot of birdsecs and badgersecs among the mentor cêpans, which tracks, because, well, mentors. interestingly, it seems to be a pattern so far that the birdsec mentors are either some of the most deeply abusive among them (see: rey, sandor, and ethan even though he's an unofficial cêpan), or the most decent parents of them under the circumstances (see: katarina).
john is a hognose (badgery snake) 'i live here' snake lion, and a VERY loud one. he's set on saving the world mainly a) in order to save his People, or b) because it's what they would want. he also believes STRONGLY in snake values as applied to other people, and absolutely cannot grok that anyone would feel differently--he holds back on killing a major enemy because he's worried about killing a friendly acquaintance's Person--and honestly he can be kind of a huge dick about it lmao. he burns HARD at the end of the first series when sarah dies; in the second, he copes by making an entire community into his circle and no longer gives a shit about the rest of the world outside it, including groups who are in similar if not worse circumstances than his community. Horrific War Crimes Ensue!
rex is an everyone double badger and i love him so much. i love him So Much. he is a wonderful example of how to write a morally dubious character whose dodgy qualities interest me instead of making me grit my teeth and Tolerate Them. his arc could have fixed So Much of the Ending's Bullshit and i will be forever mad that they dumped it in the trash
there is more, oh my god there's so much more, this series has SO many characters in it, but this is a start thank you for coming to my ted talk
