Summary: Morro casts a small illusion, just to prove he's the Green Ninja.
Prompts: Illusions
Warnings: None.
Morrotober 2023 Day Two
He sneaked into Wu's bedroom while his teacher was getting groceries. Wu had warned him about the Golden Weapons before, but Morro didn't have to actually touch them. He just had to stand in front of them and they would react, right?
Morro took a deep breath.
The bag definitely held the weapons, each one wrapped up in cloth. Morro, carefully, undid the wrappings one by one and placed them around him, careful not to touch more than one at once. He stood there surrounded by them and waited, breathing hard.
The Golden Weapons lay motionless on the floor.
His heartrate picked up. It didn't mean anything, only–had he done something wrong? He had to be the Green Ninja. Wu wouldn't–he would have had to lie to him for years, because Wu had to know, right? He wasn't strong enough yet, that was all. Maybe he had to arrange them differently? Maybe the green gi had to be there, too?
Something was wrong. Something was very, very wrong.
Morro felt tears pricking at his eyes. He drew a harsh breath in. No, he told himself. He was the Green Ninja. He couldn't afford not to be–but if Master Wu saw the Golden Weapons stay inert, then he would think Morro wasn't the Green Ninja.
So, obviously, something had to be done to fix that.
Morro wrapped all the weapons up again and left the room exactly as it was.
.
The spell was easy; it had to be. Wu hadn't wanted him to learn magic, and so Morro had to teach himself in secret. He couldn't do any of the bigger stuff, but he could make an illusion.
Morro wrote the spell down and whispered the words by candlelight. Once he tested it, he linked it to a simple hand gesture and burned the paper.
It would work. It had to.
Wu was waiting for him at breakfast. "Good morning, Morro," he said with a smile. "You're up late today."
Morro bowed stiffly. "I'm sorry, Master Wu. I had a hard time sleeping, I was so excited for today."
"I understand," Wu said softly. "Try to eat something. No matter what happens, I care for you, alright?"
Why was he talking like that? Did Wu already think he wasn't the Green Ninja? Morro shoved down his doubts and sat down to eat.
None of the other students were there after sunrise exercises; they all had families to go home to. "Try to relax," Wu told him. "Remember–"
"I know, Master Wu," Morro said.
"Morro."
"What?"
Wu looked like he was about to say something, then sighed. "Never mind."
He told Morro to wait while he prepared the weapons. Morro stood straight and stiff as he waited.
Finally, he heard Wu call for him.
Morro closed his eyes and walked before the Golden Weapons.
When he opened his eyes, they lay inert. Morro's flicked his gaze up to Wu, who held up the green gi before him, and watched his teacher's smile slowly fade. That was it, he realized. Wu would decide he wasn't the Green Ninja, and–and there would be no reason to keep him around, would there? No reason for him to stay.
His hands shaking, he held his hands behind his back and snapped his fingers.
The weapons shone. They hovered in the air, briefly, before falling again. Wu's smile didn't return. "So it is you," he said. "That's… that's good. I expected that."
He didn't sound happy. Morro looked up at him. "Is something wrong, Master Wu?" he asked.
"Nothing." Wu wrapped up the gi and put it back in the chest. "You may go, Morro. You have a lot more training before you're ready to protect Ninjago, alright? Destiny has decided."
Morro trained as hard as he could and slept fitfully that night. It was fine, he told himself. It was just a little spell to confirm what they already knew. He was the Green Ninja. He had to be. He had to be.
Decades would pass before the lie was discovered.
