Podcast #928: For a Better Work Out, Think Like a Kid
According to some estimates, only 5% of people in the West get the recommended amount of daily physical activity. Is the solution getting a fitness tracker, developing more discipline, or buying a piece of cardio equipment for your basement? My guest would say none of the above, and would have you think about kids playing at recess instead. Darryl Edwards is the founder of the Primal Play Method. Today on the show, we discuss the epidemic of sedentariness which besets both adults and children and why technology and willpower isn’t the cure for it. Darryl then explains why a better solution to getting more movement and physical activity in our lives is rediscovering the intrinsically motivating pleasure of play. He offers suggestions on how to do that, including compiling a play history for your life, embracing “primal movements” that will get you moving like an animal and a child, and getting over the fear of looking goofy while doing so. We discuss the joys and health benefits of exploring your capabilities and environment and how to incorporate more movement into your busy adult life by making even regular activities more playful. Just caught this passage while reading #TheWimHofMethodBook and it struck me fairly hard. 🌳 I grew up climbing trees. I remember my mother telling me a story about when we were camping and I was really young. She lost track me momentarily and called out...and I responded from way up in a tree. She was petrified, but called me down calmly. I think that must have set off a mindset for me because tree-climbing has always been a joy of mine. I remember climbing the pine trees behind my neighbors' house, the numerous tree houses we built with my dad, and always having an attitude of "how high can I go?" ☁️ It's probably a big part of why I'm into #MovNat, #ocr, and just never giving up playfulness. I think it's sad that parks trim the branches from trees so that kids can't climb them now. I think it's sad that we're more comfortable letting our kids climb static playground equipment than a living tree. I rejoice in seeing people climbing trees and otherwise enjoying them. Why do I do what I do. Its not because Im an adrenalin junkie although around I2 years ago I jumped off Slide Rock Creek near Sedona under the bridge some 46 feet; bit my lip when my feet hit the water. Yes I admit l love being a junkie and would love to live my life again as a stuntman. However my reason for jumping repetitive off this tree trunk is that I think when you get older its conducive to shock the body, it makes the skeleton more resilient to injury and I was intent on jumping from a higher point and I feel my vibramfivefingers helped.
