my ENTIRE Happy Mask Salesman lore in one post [none of this is canon btw I just made this up for fun]

Ok so basically

Keilroi Miyatake (my official name of HMS) was born in the Gerudo desert, his mom is Gerudo and his dad is Hylian. His mom was a Gerudo warrior before she got kicked out because at the time being with a Hylian was frowned upon. So they hid in the desert for a bit until the Gerudos found them and told them to leave the desert. At this point his parents and him are wanderers. About 5-6 years later Keilroi now has a little sister named Marion.

Fast forward about 6 or so years, Keilroi would be 12 or so, Navuri (Keilroi's mom) gets very ill and passes away, his dad was a d*uchebag so he basically left Keilroi and Marion on their own. Keilroi basically had to learn how to fend for himself and take care of his sister. Eventually Keilroi and Marion were taken in by a tribe and they were there for probably about 10 or so years. Keilroi learned how to fight and defend himself in the tribe, and actually learned pyrokenesis. Eventually, Keilroi learned about some not so very good intentions the tribe had so the tribe started turning on him and his sister, so they left.

Keilroi's probably about 20 or so at this point, so Keilroi and his sister wander around for about 5 more years until the Hyrulean Civil War happens and Keilroi's basically forced to fight in the war on the Hylian Kingdom's side. Keilroi was basically terrified at this point and didn't know what he was even fighting for, so he just killed enemies without any afterthought. Eventually after the war, the King of Hyrule wanted him to help train guards and knights, and Keilroi was honestly scared to refuse because he thought something bad would happen. (At this point Keilroi would be around 30 or so)

After about 4 years or so, Keilroi basically connected the dots in his brain and figured out that the king is just using him for violent purposes, which he doesn't want to contribute to anymore. Keilroi knows he can't just quit because the king will probably be pissed and execute him, so Keilroi goes into hiding and fakes his death.

About 3 years after being in hiding, Keilroi assumes a new identity as the Happy Mask Salesman. The gold pieces he wears were actually an award from the royal family. He doesn't know what else to do with it, so he wears it. Most people have probably already forgotten about "Keilroi" anyway, and plus he hardly ever leaves his shop because he's probably afraid someone will notice him.

When Ganon started to rule over, he just dipped and went under the radar for a very long time. After that, he went to Termina to find the mask, shenanigans happen, we all know what happens in Majora's Mask.

Now HMS just wanders around selling masks for a living, he's pretty content with his life, so I guess that's neat.

ALSO: Due to him being in the Clock Tower in Majora's Mask for so long, that's why he doesn't age!! Because in Majora's Mask, the clock at the bottom of the screen actually goes away!!!

COOL FACTS!!!!!!!!!!

He doesn't like sharing his real name with people, so he prefers people call him Mask.

Keilroi Miyatake's name is a reference to "Kilroy", the character popularized by "Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto" by Styx. "Miya" is taken from "Miyamoto", the creator of the Zelda series," and "take" is just taken from a mushroom.

He is VERY tall. He is about 7'0.

He's also HELLA strong. Built like a Jojo character under that purple clothes. Talk about a sleeper build.

His eyes are green!!

HMS is very knowledgeable on foraging for food. It is his favorite activity.

His weapon of choice is a 9-ringed broadsword, along with a Hylian shield.

Doesn't like the rain. It reminds him of his time in Termina, which was pretty stressful for him.

He has ties with the Gerudo, but doesn't get much of a chance to interact with them because of the whole being a man thing. So usually he'll just get his sister to do it LOL

TLDR: HMS's real name is Keilroi Miyatake, had a very shitty childhood, joined a tribe in his teens, was kicked out of the tribe in his 20s, was forced to fight in the Hyrulean Civil War, then forced to contribute to more violence, got tired of it, faked his death, is now the Happy Mask Salesman.

Penny Polendina: Robot Rep

Robots as representation has seen a lot of use throughout media, to varying degrees of success. Sometimes it is fairly explicit in the narrative, others it is more subtle. Often it is borderline impossible to determine whether intentional or not, such is the popularity of this trope. 

RWBY has made attempts at representing marginalized groups over its run, similarly to varying degrees of success. One character, the focus of this post, is Penny Polendina, a robot girl who, while not explicitly confirmed by the writers of the show, is seen by some fandom members as a source of representation, most commonly as neurodivergent or transgender (usually nonbinary), but also as aro-spec or a-spec. 

This post will be a collection of my thoughts, as a member of multiple of the above mentioned demographics, against Penny as a source of representation, as well as a few reasons behind these thoughts.

Who is Penny Polendina?

Penny is introduced fairly late in Volume 1 when Team RWBY quite literally runs into her. The group exchange greetings and names, though not before Yang asks her if she’s “sure she didn’t hit her head.” As they leave, Ruby offhandedly calls her “friend,” leading Penny to ask her curiously if she truly is a friend. Ruby agrees (to her teammates’ dismay) and Penny grows very excited at the confirmation.

Subsequent meetings with Penny, many of them by pure coincidence, reveal more about her character. She states that she doesn’t have a lot of friends, that she has never been to another kingdom before, and that her father, worried for her safety, did not want her to venture out too much during her time in Vale. Perhaps most notably, she tells Ruby in confidence that she is “not a real girl,” but rather a synthetic person built by her father (later revealed to be named Pietro Polendina). Ruby insists that she has both a heart and a soul, to which Penny becomes overjoyed and hugs her tightly.

In Volume 3, Penny is competing against Pyrrha in the Vytal Tournament when tragedy strikes. Emerald uses her semblance to trick Pyrrha into destroying Penny, slicing her into pieces with her own weapon, killing her and revealing her secret to the whole world. The villains use Penny’s death to incite panic and fear, and the Fall of Beacon ensues.

Penny is not seen for a long time following her death, but in Volume 7 she has been brought back, her robotic core recovered and a new body built. Her chassis and weapons are upgraded, and, remarkably, she shows little initial change in personality from her brutal death in Amity Arena. Penny remains largely the same earnest, slightly-naive girl who she was before the events of the Fall, still just as curious and excitable as ever.

Penny continues to play a part of multiple major events in Volume 7, namely the Council Election and Winter Maiden plotlines. 

The former sees her framed for murder by Tyrian and Watts, and subsequent scenes reveal new things about the nature of her construction. When Ruby asks why Pietro is concerned for Penny’s safety, stating that “[e]ven if the worst does happen, [he] can always reactivate her,” Pietro reveals that her aura is actually given from his own reserves, and as such, with every reconstruction she grows more difficult to rebuild. 

The latter plotline features her in relation to Winter, who is slated to take on the Maiden powers after the current holder, Fria. Winter states in previous scenes that she dislikes how she allows her emotions to get the better of her, at first stating that Penny wouldn’t understand but then attempting to apologize and clarify her poor wording. Later, during a battle with Cinder, the Winter Maiden surrounds herself in a whirlwind of freezing air, fast enough to rip Winter’s gloves from her hands and cold enough to leave ice burns on her fingers. Penny, seeing this, decides to dive in, relying on her leg-mounted rockets and synthetic skin to soldier through the dangerous conditions. This, combined with Winter’s efforts to hold back Cinder, allow Penny to secure the Maiden powers, taking them up herself.

Robots as Representation

Robots are a powerful tool for tropes because they are in most cases created as imitations of life, most commonly humanity. Combined with sentience or even simply heightened degrees of knowledge/adaptability compared to real world robots, this allows for many philosophical questions to build off for subplots (what is a person, what is emotion, etc.) However, the same factor that makes a robot such a good exploration into what defines humanity simultaneously makes them such a poor allegory for marginalized groups. 

Real world bigotry is between humans, from one group of humans to another based on superficial differences. All parties involved are the same species with the same key makeup. Bigots often insist that groups are different in some fundamental way that makes them the enemy or the outsider, a strategy to rationalize their bigotry when in reality, no such fundamental differences exist. All people are all human, all people deserve the respect and dignity of a human being.

With a robot, however, the definition of “human” can get blurry. Robots are, at their core, imitations. Depending on the media, this could mean, for instance, operating on different logical principles, or that possessing physical traits, internal or external, that mark them as definedly not human. This blurring of the lines is good thing for “what is humanity” plotline, but an incredibly bad one for representation. This is in especially poor taste when the groups that said robot is often supposed to be representing (a-spec, aro-spec, neurodivergent, and/or nonbinary) are frequently referred to as “robotic” as an insult. It is used to dehumanize us, to insinuate we are lacking in something that would otherwise make us more. 

There is also the issue of context. This trope being as widespread as it is, some traits in a robot are markedly “human” while others are markedly not. Generally, these traits include the ability to articulate emotion, the ability to take things figuratively, feelings of attraction (platonic, romantic, sexual), and others. These, coincidentally, all line up with the very same groups robots are most often coded to represent. Some neurodivergent people have difficulty articulating their emotions or understanding subtext. Some aro-spec or a-spec people do not feel romantic or sexual attraction, respectively. Robots like the Terminator, who shows little emotion and frequently takes things too literally, are generally seen as less “human” than a robot who clearly articulates their emotion (i.e. Transformers, the Iron Giant, Wall-E, etc.)

Allegories, for all their versatility, always go both ways. Comparing a real-world minority to a definedly inhuman character may grant said group some much-needed spotlight in media, but it can just as easily lead to the audience drawing conclusions that said minority can be likened to robots, or at the very least that the author/showrunners believe said minority can be likened to robots.

Case-Specific Additions

Penny Polendina’s plotlines lend themselves to some specific facets of the allegory for marginalized groups. Firstly, her arc is primarily about what makes a “real girl.” This is a point in her direction, as it puts the idea that she is a person front and center. 

Unfortunately, this is likely the only point in her favor. Starting from her very first outing, Yang refers to her as “weird,” Weiss voices skepticism about her ability, and Ruby is urged by all of her teammates to deny that Penny is a friend. The issue here is, first and foremost, that none of these reactions are framed as bad by the story. If anything, they are barely acknowledged at all. This lends itself to the notion that it is okay to treat people who are different than you in such a way, which is not a good message for representation.

In Volume 3, perhaps the most egregious instance, she is quite literally ripped apart on live television, her secret revealed to the world against her will. This not only results in her death, but in the deaths of many others due to the Fall of Beacon. Beyond the brutality of this scene and the message it sends through the lens of representation (being unwillingly “outed,” violently murdered, and used as a tool for further violence and death), it also created the Volume 7 conundrum of her being brought back to life.

Morbid as it sounds, mortality is one of the things that ties all humans together. Death is permanent and tragic, but one could argue it is integral to the human experience. Penny, however, defies this with her resurrection, not by magic nor miracle, but by virtue of her robotic core being retrieved and a body being rebuilt around it. The story tries to rectify this by saying that Pietro can’t restore her forever, but this does not actually put a hard limit on the number of times she can be brought back. It simply puts a limit on the number of times Pietro alone can bring her back; anyone with a reserve could theoretically donate the needed aura to rebuild Penny should she be destroyed again (provided her core is retrievable).

Finally, the end of Volume 7 sees her claim the Maiden powers. While it seems the narrative attempts to frame this as a confirmation that she is a real girl, the context surrounding that same scene shows otherwise. The howling vortex of freezing wind was shown to be too strong and too dangerous for a flesh-and-blood human to reach through, tearing apart Winter’s gloves and freezer-burning her fingers when she attempted. Penny’s ability to penetrate this whirlwind was not thanks to her supposed humanity, but thanks to the upgrades to her chassis that included both strengthened synthetic skin and rocket boosters on her legs. Both were only added during her reconstruction, which was only possible due to her robotic nature. Penny’s storyline in Volume 7 renders the foundations of her humanity-based plotline shaky at best, contradictory at worst. Unfortunately, this leaves her with more negatives than positives.

Closing Thoughts

In summary, robotic characters are generally a good way to explore what it means to be a person, but due to the dual-edged nature of allegory, they often make poor allegories for marginalized groups. Ways to rectify this would be making an explicitly human character also a member of the demographic(s) the robotic character is a part of, though that requires at the very least some form of confirmation from the writers, which as of now, has not been given.

Of course, these are just my opinions on the matter, but if you have not scrolled past or clicked away already I hope that you take my points into consideration when making your own opinions and/or headcanons. Please also note that my thoughts on Penny as poor representation do not reflect my thoughts on her as a character, nor are they intended as an attack on those who like her. Finally, please remember that Penny is not (as of yet) canonically confirmed to be a member of any of these groups.

As much as I would like to see myself and my demographics represented in the show, I simply believe that Penny Polendina is not the best way to go about it.

I'm an Asian-American panromantic grey-ace, so I know what I'm talking about when it comes to othering and marginalization of the ace/aro community.

I try to keep my blog positive for myself and my followers because it is meant to be an escape, but there's a reason why I reblog so many ace/aro related posts that unfortunately have aphobic rhetoric:

I genuinely lost a lot of faith in Tumblr and Twitter allyship from other lbgtq+ people. Most, but not all, ace/aro positive reblogs I see come from other ace/aro people. If you are an allo ally, please know that I appreciate it so greatly and my heart swells with happiness when I see it on my dash.

I learned that I have to stop waiting for people to come around, and try to change minds myself. My heart is too broken from too many people I trusted to have the same level of good faith anymore.

People are not getting that attacking cis hetero romantic aces/hetero sexual aros/demiromantics hurts ALL of us. Why aren't people listening to us sga aces/aros? So many of us are poc and/or experiance multi attraction, but we are swept under the rug because it is more convenient to imagine all aces/aros represent the pinnacle of privilage.

((Personal and fandom specific)) I used to follow so many more Transformers blog, a fandom I am so damn passionate about and whose Tumblr fandom is so overhelmingly lbgtq+. Whose source material is so damn inclusive. But so many times now, I've been sucker punched by popular blogs that casually reblog aphobic content and no one wants to correct them because in this climate allies and ace/aros don't know if we're gonna get any support.

As an Asian-American, I see so many parallels of my experiances as an Asian woc and an ace being invalidated. I've experianced the nuances of differing privilages, but I also experianced how damaging "oppression olympics". So many of the Asian American experiances are being invalidated because they are different, less violent (in some regards), and less visible to mainstream knowledge.

Being hurt so much by other lbgtq+ people is affecting how I express my allyship. I've been sucker punched so many times now that when I see wonderful art posts celebrating different lbgtq+ identities and don't see ace/aro, I can't help but think "are they exclusionists?" but won't go to their blogs to check in fear of finding triggering aphobic content. I know that most of these creators aren't aphobes or exclusionists, but a part of me asks "what if?".

Exclusionism to me it feels like I'm expected to support racist feminists who attacks woc and who would happily leave us put of their activism, but the general consensus is that I should support them unconditionally because they are feminists. Racists feminists hurt me and they don't care about me! Of course I want to support white feminists like I do with every other feminists of color, but I've been hurt so badly and I kept thinking "will this person hurt me?".

To the aphobes and exclusionists, ask yourselves why are you so angry at us? Why are you aligning yourselves with people that floods ace/aro positive blogs and tags to trigger us, people who were so upset when ace/aros have access to suicide hotlines, who makes troll accounts to trigger other lbgtq people and goad them into hating us, who uses rhetorics that is the same or similar used in biphobia, panphobia, nbphobia, etc?

I'm tired, I'm heart broken, and I'm paranoid all the time and I hate it. I want to enjoy Pride Month so more than I am now, but I'm waiting for the next sucker punch.

Q: Why the Mad Max Fandom?

A: I kind of just tend to find one thing I like, and latch onto it with a deathgrip, though there's not really one specific reason I latched onto Mad Max. The only post-apocalyptic thing I had any interest in prior to Fury Road was a comic called Romantically Apocalyptic, but I wouldn't have called myself a die-hard fan of the genre. I think it was just that Fury Road was such a fantastic movie in so many ways that it really caught my attention, and then when I got involved in the fandom, I found it to be all around a really really great group of people, and they were talking about such interesting things, and I just fell in love and decided this was my fandom home! Since then, I've made some really good friends through this fandom and gotten involved in Wasteland Weekend because of it, so this fandom will always remain near and dear to me.

Q: What do you think are some defining aspects of your work? Do you have a style? Recurrent themes?

A: I really like to take this dark, gritty world, and make it kind of light and fun, honestly. Or at least as much as one can without completely detracting from the reality of the state of the world. I've written a couple of darker or more serious fics, but my favorite things to write involve putting a touch of magic or an interesting little twist into the world, and handling the sillier side of things.

Q: Which of your works was the most fun to create? The most difficult? Which is your most popular? Most successful? Your favourite overall?

A: I think I had equal amounts of fun writing my Pocket Sized and Corvus Cormax, because they were just light and silly and kind of intriguing situations for me. I also really really enjoyed writing No Going Back, even though it was on the more serious side of things for me. The prompt just grabbed my imagination, and I was really inspired to write from start to finish. For most difficult, I'll have to go with Consonance, because I am presently stuck on it and have been for months and if you were reading and enjoying that one, I am so so sorry. D: Convalescence got the most hits and kudos overall, but I think that was mostly just because it was posted very early in the Fury Road fandom. Just based on response, I'd say Corvus Cormax was my most popular/successful, and was also my favorite overall.

Q: How do you like your wasteland? Gritty? Hopeful? Campy? Soft? Why?

A: Hopeful with a bit of humor and sometimes a little wasteland magic. I'm into escapism first and foremost, so the least like our own world I can make things, the more enjoyable.

Q: Walk us through your creative process from idea to finished product. What's your prefered environment for creating? How do you get through rough patches?

A: The idea itself usually sparks scenes in my head, and I build around those. Sometimes I'll be writing along and think of something I'd like to happen down the line, or a scene will just start playing through my head, so I'll go write that, and connect the pieces later. Which can sort of cause problems, because when I go writing all the good bits first, filling in the bits in between that are less interesting can get tedious. When I hit a patch that just leaves me completely stuck, most often running the fic by someone else and bouncing ideas around with them helps me tremendously. I tend to like to write from the comfort of my room where there aren't a lot of distractions, but sometimes I'll write on my phone if I'm away from my computer and bored or inspired.

Q: What (if any) music do you listen to for help getting those creative juices flowing?

A: Honestly I basically always listen to my entire music library on random. It's super eclectic, but I'm so familiar with all my songs that it's basically just background noise. Very occasionally I will skip a song that's not suiting the mood of what I'm writing, but mostly anything goes.

Q: What is your biggest challenge as a creator?

A: Getting stuck sucks so much and is my most common problem, because sometimes I feel like I have just exhausted all ideas and there's nowhere to go. Bouncing ideas off of other people always helps, but often I avoid that either because I don't want to bother people, or because I'm super protective of my works until I consider them done. I don't know, I just like people to read the work in it's finalized form, as I intend it to be read, and not in some incomplete messy state.

Q: How have you grown as a creator through your participation in the Mad Max Fandom? How has your work changed? Have you learned anything about yourself?

A: I'm sure my writing has improved, but it's been such a fluid process that I'm not really sure! I guess I've grown and my work has changed in that I've gotten braver in my ideas, more willing to just go for something and not worry about people thinking it's silly or I'm weird. 

Q: Do you have any favourite relationships to portray? What interests you about them?

A: I'm aro/ace myself, so fandom ships have never been a big draw of mine. I tag a lot of my works with "platonic soulmates" because I've just fallen in love with the idea of Max and Furiosa being very close to each other, but not romantically or sexually. They have a really interesting dynamic, and I like to explore them really getting to know each other completely platonically. 

Q: How does your work for the fandom change how you look at the source material?

A: I've explored some headcanons in my writing, and built on ideas in ways that let me sort of see more into the movie, imagine things under the surface beyond the canon, and feel like I know the motivations behind certain characters' actions, even if it's never explained.

Q: Do you prefer to create in one defined chronology or do your works stand alone? Why or why not?

A: My works stand alone for the most part. I've got two series that each consist of a couple fics that follow the same timeline, but otherwise each of my fics is a completely different world.

Q: To break or not to break canon? Why?

A: *Chanting* break canon, break canon, break canon. I like playing with new ideas! Sometimes it's fun to explore some headcanons with fic and build on the movie that way, but I've found that taking the canon and changing a detail and letting it play out from there is the most fun.

Q: Share some headcanons.

A: Immortal!Max is my biggest and most-loved headcanon. I like the idea that he's only sort of peripherally aware of it, too. He knows it's been a pretty long time since the fall of the world, and he's catching on that people who appear his age were born after the fall, but if it even has sunk in that he's not aging and not dying, he actively tries not to think about it too much because that seems like Too Much and he's not ready to face that. He's accepted it as a possibility, but he doesn't put much weight on it. It's just part of him now, and all he can do is live with it.

Q: If you work with OCs walk us through your process for creating them. Who are some of your favourites?

A: Eheh... My OCs are basically fleshed out juuuust enough to be believable and I put zero effort into them beyond that, to be honest. They're often only there to help along the story for the canon characters, and then I toss them away and never think about them again.

Q: What advice can you give someone who is struggling to make their own works more interesting, compelling, cohesive, etc.? 

A: I don't know if my methods will work for anybody else, but three things: 1) imagine the scene like it's a movie playing out in front of you, before writing, while writing, and while re-reading. It helps me keep track of who is where, what's going on, and it makes any continuity mistakes really jump out at me. 2) really get into your characters' heads, think like they do, and share their motivations for what they're doing and their thoughts at what is going on around them in your writing. I think that helps people relate to them more and get into the story more, and it makes you think about how characters would react in realistic, if not always outwardly reasonable, ways. 3) Proof read like a crazy person. This may be weird, but similar to how I get into my characters' heads when I write, I also sort of get into... well, not my own head, when I re-read my works. I try to put myself in a different perspective, and proof-reading my fics with a different mindset really helps me see things that didn't end up making sense the first time around, or sound off, or might be confusing if you don't already know where I was going with it. If I'm thinking like I was when I wrote it, of course everything's going to make sense and work the way I imagined it. If I throw out those preconceptions and intentions, it can almost seem completely new to me, like it would be to a reader reading it for the first time.

Q: Have you visited or do you plan to visit Australia, Wasteland Weekend, or other Mad Max place?

A: I would love to visit Australia, though honestly when I do, priority number one is going to be bats, weird marsupials, and other wildlife. Australia stands out to me mostly as being this weird giant island where evolution just went fucking crazy. But Wasteland Weekend! Hoo boy am I involved in Wasteland Weekend, let me tell you, and I absolutely love it. I love the themed areas and how they completely immerse you in the world, I love the community (seriously, some of the best people I have ever met) and even though it was originally built on Mad Max, which is generally a pretty violent, hard world, I love the atmosphere people create there: the idea that even if the world ended and society as we know it collapsed, people would coexist, look out for each other, and celebrate life. 10/10, highly recommend, hit me up if you plan on attending in the future.

Q: Tell us about a current WIP or planned project.

A: I've unfortunately fallen out of writing quite a bit for the time being, so no planned projects outside of what I'm currently working on, but boy let me tell you how much I love the one I'm co-writing with Catlady! We've put a ton of thought and worldbuilding into it, and a lot of character development in the works for Max, as well as his developing relationship with Furiosa. It's an AU that really gets my imagination going, and I'm super excited for some of the things we have planned. Current opinions on popular discourse

- You don’t need dysphoria to be trans, but you do need incongruence (the disconnect itself, not the discomfort)

-Being trans is a mental illness and gender incongruence is a diagnosable disorder. Gender dysphoria should be considered a possible side effect of incongruence

-Cishet aces/aros aren’t causing as many problems as a lot of people think and should be allowed to enjoy lgbt+ spaces, but should recognize that they are not nearly as actively and violently oppressed as others in the community and should let them speak on some matters

-MOGAI is valid as long as those using MOGAI terms and pronouns recognize and understand that most of the world disagrees and it’s just gonna be like that for a while longer

-Same goes for neopronouns

-Suicide baiting is never okay, EVER

-Both sides of any argument have extremists that’re doing harm, sometimes one side more than the other, but they’re always there

-Otherkin isn’t bad as long as the person participating understands their feelings and reasoning about it and understands that it’s not something that should be used as a main coping mechanism for serious issues, and that if they have other issues they should seek professional help

-Factkin are not something that should be discussed in large circles or celebrated, but if it’s a coping mechanism for a larger issue a person has, I understand and it’s okay to have that coping mechanism if it’s your only option, but that person should seek professional help to work through their problems.

-He/Him lesbians are still confusing for me but I understand at least some of the history behind the use of that identity with those pronouns, and again I’d never attack somebody for identifying that way, I’m just still confused on the matter, but I’m actively educating myself on it

-Drag should be open to celebrate for all, but you can’t be a drag queen if you’re a cis woman or a drag king if you’re a cis man. I’m still unsure about what to think on trans men being drag kings or trans women being drag queens.

-Pansexual is an okay label to use for people who use it mostly because it just makes them feel better, but anybody who uses it SPECIFICALLY because they think bisexual is too exclusive of a label is biphobic and frankly transphobic/enbyphobic

-TERFs and SWERFs should still fuck off

-Cultural appropriation isn’t cool or good but if it’s in the case of something that is very openly practiced or used and you understand the history behind it, it’s okay to do (things like wearing leis or wearing kimono/yukata) (but if it’s something that is like. Sacred to a culture or from a closed culture or religion? Don’t even think about it unless you’re from or apart of that culture/religion or you’re with somebody from that culture/religion who is approving of your actions)

-Any and all slurs can be reclaimed by those they were used against

-Don’t use reclaimed slurs to talk about people who are still uncomfortable with said slurs (things like queer)

-People can change and many of our past mistakes don’t reflect our current selves (literally any person on this hellsite I guarantee could have a callout post made about them that would turn everybody against them if we all took every mistake as heavily with normal people as we do with celebrities etc)

make and support numerous lies regarding the discourse, such as that MOGAI was “coined by a pedophile” or that aspec was “stolen from autistics”

And most of them are biphobic, such as believing biphobia doesn’t exist, using phrases like “bihet”, and hating on “”””new”””” or “”””fake”””” identities in general, which means many are truscum/anti-nonbinary/exorsexist as well (fun fact: truscum came up with this “the mogais” shit btw), and most of them believing in “straight/cis passing” privilege

And tend to have a habit of shitting on people who identify as queer, or even imply or directly say nobody is allowed to ID as queer, as well as a habit of intersexism on top of that. Many also think it’s inherently homophobic to be triggered or uncomfortable by general pda and related content, including sexually explicit content (there’s generally a lot of anti-survivor and anti-sex repulsed bs).

Annnnd a lot of the cis here keep using “cishet” which is not their fucking word to use! because they have cis privilege! they are not oppressed by cis people! And a lot of them speak over trans people or outright try to educate us about what is “really” transphobic in the discourse. And the amount of misgendering is extreme, if the above big and bold part didn’t indicate that well enough.

The only specific sound I hate is my tinnitus, cause it gets in the way of other sounds. In this house, we love and appreciate our auditory environment.

REAL ANSWER   This is why I chose to link that video of Lonely Island: the crackles, pops, and little skips on old records. I... I harbour so much resentment against hipsters for making it ‘ironic.’ I’m real sentimental (IDK IF YOU’VE NOTICED) and they’re creating a barrier for true appreciation of something that’s really fucking cool.

See, what analog audio is to me is a physical record of music displaced in time, and you know, you hear that time displacement through what happened to the record or cassette or whatever in the interim. It’s inextricable from the music itself. The physical medium is record of both the music it contains and the damage it’s taken. Whether that detracts from the music or adds to it is up to the listener, but the music is still there and it’s still beautiful.

You get a damaged flac file, something went wrong in milliseconds of encoding/decoding, and it’s probably completely fucked. Cacophonous. I love the digitalization of music, but whether it’s reached you intact is 0 or 1.

You get a (not too) damaged record, it’s things like the scratch from a particle of dust in someone’s home 50 years and 5000 kilometers away. How goddamn wild is that? That tiny scratch, the crackle it makes, is a connection between you and someone you’ll never know—hell, they’re probably dead— but you’re listening to music you both like from the exact same source. It’s gotten a little fucked up along the way but it still, if you let it, delivers the performance of more than a lifetime. (I have this whole thing on how sound is like physical touch transmitted but I’ve subjected you to enough here lmao)

Do you believe in ghosts? Only in that there’s a non-zero possibility for anything.

And tend to have a habit of shitting on people who identify as queer, or even imply or directly say nobody is allowed to ID as queer, as well as a habit of intersexism on top of that. Many also think it’s inherently homophobic to be triggered or uncomfortable by general pda and related content, including sexually explicit content (there’s generally a lot of anti-survivor and anti-sex repulsed bs).

Annnnd a lot of the cis here keep using “cishet” which is not their fucking word to use! because they have cis privilege! they are not oppressed by cis people! And a lot of them speak over trans people or outright try to educate us about what is “really” transphobic in the discourse. And the amount of misgendering is extreme, if the above big and bold part didn’t indicate that well enough.

That being said of course if you see someone on here who is additionally abusive, an assailant, a radfem/truscum, etc, feel free to mention it. Blogs like @regreceipts and @aphobehallofshame and @justaphobethings​ has quite a lot of posts on these people (and others) saying awful things and being nasty.

@patheticlesbo i’m continuing here because adding on to the original post is just disrespectful. -SKIP TO BOLD IF YOU DON’T GIVE A SHIT- look, they’re BOTH risky moves. but it’s not “having no romance”, it’s “having no romance because they are aroace”. surprisingly, people have a violently different reaction to the two. typically, when a character has no canon romance... a lot of people just assume they’re gay. Elsa from frozen is a good example of how people react to that sort of thing. people have slowly but surely gotten more praising and accepting of lesbians in media. it’s not perfect, there’s still a lot of backlash, but we’re getting more and more strictly wlw in positive, well-written roles. the most well known aro character in media is voldemort. the very idea that someone can be unable to feel romance and still be a happy, good, human, satisfied person does not click in people’s minds. a large portion of the general public- including members of the LGBT+- completely reject it. they’ll either erase it faster than you can blink, or they’ll create giant flames about how this shouldn’t happen. and yes, i realize that this also happens with lesbian characters, and that is still a problem. but here’s the issue: you open your movie with a woman who has no interest in dating. IMMEDIATELY, this is assumed to be the problem that will be solved by the end of the movie. it’s expected that some man- or possibly some woman or nb person- will come and sweep her off her feet and the happy ending will be her magically discovering that love is real and needed. if the movie actually ended with her not dating anyone and being happy with that, how do you think the public would react? with the lesbian film, you can expect a wave of both praise and hatred over the lesbianism. but with the aroace ending, everyone’s confused, unsatisfied, and probably angry because they didn’t get the ending they came for. THAT is why it’s a riskier move. it’s not about the identities, but about the medium and what is expected in that kind of story. the aroace is riskier because it’s a twist that very few people can appreciate. even though it’s a happy ending, nobody’s actually happy except the people who want more positive aroace representation. -SKIP TO HERE IF YOU DON’T GIVE A SHIT- look, i agree with you that it wasn’t a good move to add on to a lesbian post the way oneesk-nineteen did. it was unnecessary and they could have just made their own damn post. hell, i should have made my own damn post, it’s just easier to reply that way. i said “probably because” not because i agreed with them doing it, but because you asked why they would. you asked a question, i gave you a potential answer. you deserve to feel normal. the fact that lesbians in positive roles are getting more popular is a good and beautiful thing and i want to see it continue, both as a wlw myself and as a supporter. and it’s sad that people highjack posts meant for your positivity, you deserve to have your own shit. i’m still pissed that people took the bechdel test and made it a women’s thing when it started as a lesbian thing. i do not condone that. i’m simply explaining to you the possible motives, because you asked. i’m sorry this came off as defending the adding, or lesbophobic, or that i was saying you “aren’t radical enough”. i think you could really benefit from examining the culture around you because you’re under the impression that aroace people aren’t systematically oppressed, and... it’s very hard to take that view seriously when i’m uncomfortably aware of just how much goes into beating them down on a daily basis. i legitimately cannot imagine an experience where your view on that looks right. it’s very, very detached from reality in my eyes, past the point of naivete. i say this not to insult you, but to hopefully open your mind a little. bottom line, it was a bad move, but there ARE reasons and your aggressive reply was just as uncalled for. you could have just said “hey, this post is for lesbians and it’s disrespectful to tack your own stuff on, could you please go make your own post instead” or something like that. instead you used strong, hurtful words(”why in god’s name” “insidious”) and made it sound like the most mindlessly lesbophobic thing in the world, and that’s why i replied. i admit i could have handled it better myself.
