New Directions Tournament Masterpost

Alright y'all, I have polls and I'm going to make it everyone else's problem.

Thank you to @blurglesmurfklaine for the idea of having a Glee character poll tournament. Instead of taking on all Glee characters, I am sticking to members of the New Directions. I previously created a sorter for the New Directions, so if you want to create your own personal, bespoke ranking of the ND members, you can do so here (this sorter won't work on mobile).

***Overall disclaimer that we are all here because we love Glee! All of these characters have their merits and there will be no bashing! Only fun!***

I have chosen the starting match-ups so that characters are grouped based on some level of similarity - basically, I wanted to give the post-S3 and minor characters a fighting chance, because otherwise I figured they'd mostly get knocked out in the first round.

Why do you like the season 6 newbies so much - more than the season 4?

(tw mentions of sexual assault and eating disorders)

Really good question op. First off, I would like to say that I don’t hate any of the S4 newbies. I love them just fine. It’s just the way they were written and their half baked characterizations and plots (Thanks Ryan, Ian and Brad) and also how the show was split between Lima and New York. They clearly wanted us to know that they were only there to be ripoffs and combinations of the original Directioners. Jake replaces his older half brother Puck. Ryder is just another version of Finn. Marley at first fills in Rachel for like two episodes then nobody. Kitty (like Sue said herself) is basically Quinn but also Santana and Brittany in a way and Unique is the love child of Kurt and Mercedes.

So with all of this and the fact that the other half of the show is in New York with Rachel, Kurt, Santana etc. (which honestly should’ve just been it’s own sho but that’s another rant for another day), the direction of the show was a train wreck waiting to happen because we’re never really given time to actually care about the new members or what they go through since Glee writers always had this awful habit of making interesting storylines and either dropping them for the sake of another one or ending said storyline the best way they can. Very quick and very messy.

Like for example:

Marley is bullied by Kitty into practicing eating disorders. What do they do with this? Nothing

Jake is struggling with commitment in relationships and his half black/half Jewish background. What do they do with this? Nothing

We find out Ryder is dyslexic and that him and Kitty were s*xually assaulted at young ages. What do they do with this? Nothing

Unique is obviously struggling with her identity and was the biggest target for harassment. What do they do with this? Nothing

And let’s not talk about how they just completely got rid of Joe, Sugar and Rory for no reason. Like we don’t even know what happened to them after Sue forced them (besides Kitty) to transfer schools 😐 all we get is a guest appearance from Unique in season 6 which was only to push Sheldon’s storyline and the four of them minus Marley coming back to McKinley in 2020.

And this is not to say that the S6 newbies didn’t suffer the same messy fate from the writers.

Like Jane’s feud with Dalton Academy’s sexist Warbler rules, Roderick’s struggle with his weight and “stage fright”, Mason wanting to break free from Madison and his crush on Jane, Spencer’s basically nonexistent relationship with Alistair and Myron transferring to McKinley High for…some reason. I mean Season 6, was the last and shortest season (with only 13 episodes) so there could’ve only so much to actually talk about and wrap up.

But the reason why I like them so much is because they’re simply original characters with buttloads of potential seeping out of them and they’re just way more likeable. It also helps that they have WAY more memorable musical numbers which is something I can’t really say for S4 newbies. Like Rather Be, Come Sail Away, All About That Bass, Uptown Funk, Cool Kids, I Want to Break Free from Mason, Friday I’m in Love from Spencer, Tightrope from Jane, Mustang Sally and Take Me to Church (definite highlight which also proves he’s a better “new Rachel” than Marley) from Roderick, Chandelier from Madison (another definite highlight), You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) from the Warblers etc. I definitely like Kitty much more this season as the pseudo leader of the New Directions and wished they could’ve actually talked about how she was dealing with her friends being forced to move and how the graduates that make it their active duty to always show up at the school at any convenience but never bothered to know or actually care about the newbies but again that’s another rant for another day.

So to basically recap: S4 newbies deserved more than being just retreads of the original cast and S6 newbies deserved their own spin off instead of a short messy (albeit more put together) season.

Before I leave tumblr for shabbos, (just until tomorrow) I'm gonna use this time to be loudly jewish (is there any other way lmao).

The writing of glee is really antisemetic, and you should care about this when you're critiquing glee for being offensive.

Jacob Ben Israel is an example of the negative stereotype of Jewish men being unmasculine perverts. Rachel berry is the cookie cutter stereotype of the loud, neurotic, and controlling Jewish woman. Myron Moskovitz is a mix of the worst parts of both of those character's portrayals with the added layer of him being undeservingly rich.

The Puckermans are the only Jewish glee characters I can think of that aren't antisemetic caricatures (Jake is pigeonholed for his race, but that's not really something I'm qualified to unpack) but even then, the show failed at giving them any meaningful connection to their religious tradition (like Quinn and Joe got) besides a handful of throwaway lines and the misrepresentation of Channukah that was 4x10 Glee, Actually.

I know glee ended years ago, so theres nothing we can do about it now, but please (especially if you're a goyiche gleek) be mindful of the hurtful antisemetic tropes present in the text

June 9: The New Newbies

They might have shown up late in the game -- but they still made quite the impact. And were quite enjoyable during Season 6.

Roderick Meeks

Roderick was a truly different character than anyone else we’ve met before him. Socially awkward, quiet, and reserved, Roderick was an oddball comparatively to the higher-strung forces of nature that came before him. He was incredibly refreshing. And he could also really sing.

Jane Hayward

Jane was not afraid to challenge the status quo and fight for the things she believed in. Her self-confidence was inspiring, as was her ability to not back down from a fight. At the same time - her romance with Mason was sweet, and showed a softer side of her. Also, she was a killer vocalist.

Madison McCarthy

One half of the ‘creepy incest twins’ she was an absolute delight to watch. She was hilarious and scene stealing with all her little one-liners and background moments. She didn’t have much to do, but she was a joy when she was around.

Mason McCarthy

Mason was the unbridled joy of quirkiness that is a metaphor for the show itself. He is also just a pure delight to watch on screen, and I loved his little mini-romance with Jane play out.

Spencer Porter (& Alistar)

So, this is the interesting thing about Spencer... I’m not a huge fan of his character, but, I have a lot of respect for what they did with him. He’s a gay character who embodies the traits of all the meat-head jocks that have come before him. He wasn’t there to represent the apex of the LGBT community -- he could just be a character who happens to be gay -- be dislikable, do dumb things, and even have a romance with Alistar that was far more normalized than the characters that came before him. I may not like who he is -- but I do like what he represents.

Alistar, however, was pretty cool -- and I wish he had gotten more to do.

Myron Muskovitz

Alright, so this kid was annoying but... damn could he sell a number.
