Glow
fanfiction
ao3
hi
“So let me get this straight.” Neil said as he twirled a part of the live fish the ghosts had managed to catch in the ghost zone over the fire. “You’re part ghost?”
“Yep.” Victoria popped the P, already chewing on her own fish.
“How does that even work, like? Did you die to get like that, kind of like how I got my ecto-signature? Did your parents somehow get the freaky on? I just don’t understand.” Neil pulled his fish out of the fire.
“The second one. And don’t ask me, I always tuned my parents out when they were talking about it, trying to explain it to me. I really didn’t want to understand how their sex life worked.”
“I feel that. The birds and the bees talk is the worst.”
Victoria nodded.
“So what can you all do?” He asked. “There’s gotta be some perks to being some kind of half dead amalgamation.”
She rolled her eyes. “I can turn invisible, intangible, I bleed brown. I could probably make an ectoblast but that’s not something my parents ever taught me.”
“Wait, you bleed brown?”
“Yeah, my ectoplasm and blood are mixed together so they just make a really gross color.”
“Can you fly?” Neil asked excitedly.
She tsked. “Too human for that.”
“What about glow? Do you glow?”
She thought on that one a bit harder. “I don’t think so, not that I’ve noticed. My eyes glow sometimes if I’m experiencing a particularly strong emotion. But I’m not, like, a glow stick or anything.”
“But you’re not dead?”
Victoria threw her head back and laughed. “No but it’s how I feel on the inside.”
Neil laughed and looked at her. “It sucks that you’re not even really a real ghost and you have to be stuck here. All of us humans. Even the ghosts. It sucks that those goons drove all of us away.”
She smiled sadly. “Yeah.. But at least we’re safe for now.”
He nodded. “As long as we have something to eat and drink I guess there’s not much to complain about.”
Suddenly, Troy came sauntering over and he clapped an arm around Neil’s shoulders.
“You would not believe what the ghosts just found on a nearby island.”
“Is it a shower?” Neil joked.
Troy gestured behind him and Neil turned, his eyes opening wide, disbelief written across his face. He looked at two ghosts who were leading a live deer towards them.
“Where the fuck are these ghosts finding live animals in the world full of dead things?”
Victoria chuckled. “You’d be surprised by what makes it’s way in here. I totally believe there could be a shower floating around here somewhere that a ghost portal yanked out of someone’s bathroom.”
Neil shook his head. “I hope so because I’m starting to smell.”
He stood up and walked over to the deer, patting it on the head. After a moment of looking at it his eyes widened. “Wait, we’re supposed to eat this guy, aren’t we?”
The two ghosts nodded.
“Aw! Look how cute he is though. Can’t we keep this one? You guys will probably keep finding more random things in the ghost zone. We can keep eating fish.”
Victoria walked up to the deer as well. “We could probably use another live companion. I think this guy could boost morale around here. Give everyone something to look forward to.”
Troy groaned. “I’m so hungry guys.” When he looked at him they were both giving him a pleading face. He sighed. “Fine, fine. What are we going to name him?”
“Hm.” Neil thought, tapping his chin. “What about Billy?”
“I like that.” Victoria said.
“Okay, well, that’s settled then I guess.” Troy said.
“Welcome to the family, Billy.”

fanfiction
ao3
theres no canon characters in this theyre all ocs but thats fine
Neil was running. He had had to throw himself out of his bedroom window because he was finishing up reading something when he heard the door slam open downstairs and the pounding of feet were heard coming up the stairs.
“Come on! We’ve found another one with an ecto-signature!” They shouted.
Ever since his near death experience in high school, something had been different but he’d never been able to exactly distinguish it. All he’d known was that a lot of the ghosts that didn’t know him were more prone to talking to him and he was allowed inside Old Man McConald’s house now.
Just before his door had been slammed open Neil had made it out his window and down the tree to the ground. He started running.
All around him were ghosts flocking from all over the place. They seemed to all be heading in the same direction. He didn’t know who those goons in his house were, but he did know he was probably better off going wherever the ghosts were headed to.
They all turned around a corner and as he followed behind them he saw the ghosts diving into a swirling, green vortex. He stopped running and held back. What was that? That looked like it could be radioactive.
A ghost came running up from behind him. Grabbing onto his arm and trying to pull him with them. They were pleading at him with their eyes and he could once again hear the pounding of feet coming from behind them.
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. It’s not like he had a choice right now. There wasn’t enough time for him to get anywhere, especially not with these guys tracking them. Whatever this portal led to had to be better than the situation they were currently in.
He started running forward, the ghost still holding onto his arm, and together they jumped in.
As soon as he entered he felt gravity pull him down and he looked down so he could see where he was placing his feet, but there was no ground. Just endless swirls of green.
Panicking, he started struggling. The ghost pulled him up and carried him bridal style as they flew deeper into this mysterious world.
The sky was black but it was filled with many swirling looking clouds of many shades of green, some of them a bright neon color that seemed to illuminate the entire endless space they were traveling through. He was staring at a purple door when he felt the ghost suddenly shift. He turned his head to see they were heading to a floating island.
Once he was set down, he looked around. And to his surprise he saw other humans. How many of them had “ecto-signatures”?
As he kept studying the other humans that were here with him, his gaze landed on a familiar pair. His eyes widened and he ran over to them, throwing himself at his friend Troy, wrapping his arms around the other boy.
“Guys! What are you doing here? What’s happening in town?”
Troy hugged him back and Victoria spoke up beside them. “Those goons are capturing ghosts and trying to kidnap people they think are ecto-contaminated.”
“Yeah, but what are you guys doing here?” Neil asked.
“Part ghost.” Victoria said calmly before disappearing for a second and reappearing a moment later. “I have an ecto-signature so they came after me when I was visiting Mr. McConald.”
“Part ghost?”
“I’m here because she came to find me and tell me what happened.” Troy said. “She was going to leave without me but I wanted to come with. I couldn’t bear to not know what was happening.”
While his mind was still reeling at the “part ghost” mention, another heavy thought fell on his shoulders. “What do we do now? It’s not like we can go back. We won’t know when they’re gone.”
Victoria looked down. “I don’t know. We could find a portal that takes us out somewhere else or stay in here. But.” She said, pulling something from her bag. “I was to start with this.”
She held a device in her hand that she studied for a moment before pressing a button on the side. Out from the opening on it, a swirling blue blob came out and it formed into a ghost that Neil recognized.
“McConald? How?”
“This thing captures ghosts. They were gonna try to take him with it. I figured if they could take him, so could I, so I brought him with me.” Victoria said.
Old Man McConald looked around. “So this is the ghost zone. I’ve never had the pleasure to come here before.”
Neil watched as Old Man McConald looked at the three of them. He sighed and gestured for them to follow him.
“Let’s go see if any of the other ghosts have any idea what we’re going to do with you kids.”

fanfiction
hidey hey another dannymay fic but now its october i had most of this written for awhile but eh
“Okay, let me get this straight.” Vlad said, pinching the bridge of his nose and ignoring the glare Oliver was sending him from across the table. “You two dated long enough to get engaged?”
“Yes, Vlad.” Anastasia said as she set a plate down at the table.
“And Oliver is your son, Neil?”
“Yep, he sure is.” Neil said as he fiddled with the flowers in the vase in front of him.
“You and Neil had a kid together.” Vlad whispered, squinting at the table in disbelief.
“Why are you so shocked?” Oliver asked. “He must’ve been pretty great if someone had a kid with him. No one’s had a kid with you.”
“Oliver!” Anastasia gasped.
“Woah.” Neil said, looking with wide eyes between Vlad and Oliver.
“When did things get that serious between you two?” Vlad exclaimed, not seeming to notice Oliver’s comment.
“You’d probably know about all of that if you’d been here.” Oliver said, interrupting Anastasia, as he crossed his arms and continued staring at Vlad.
“Oliver! That’s enough. Be nice to Vlad today.” Anastasia scolded.
“Your mom’s right, kid.” Neil started. “You gotta be nice to Vlad. Him and I were actually buddies for a bit in school. He always seemed nice. Not sure what he did to garner those kinds of comments though.”
“Yeah, not sure what he did either except be gone for almost twenty years.”
Neil spit out his water he had just taken a sip from. “Twenty years?! Vlad where were you all that time?”
Vlad waved his hand as he stared out the window over the sink. “Oh you know, getting into the business world and creating a name for myself. Investing.”
“For twenty years?” Neil asked, raising an eyebrow. Seeing Oliver move on his left, Neil watched as the boy stared him in the eyes and made a finger waggle motion similar to one he’s seen Anastasia make when they were younger. Neil’s eyes widened.
“Wait-”
Vlad lightly pounded a fist on the table and stood up quickly. “Where’s mom? I should go find her.”
“Now, now. Stay where you are Vlad, I’m coming downstairs.” Mrs. Masters said, slowly making her way down the stairs.
“Are you ready? Can we finally start dinner now, mom?” Anastasia asked, her hands on her hips when Mrs. Masters finally sat down.
“Of course! I can’t wait to see what you guys whipped up today while I was working. I’m sure it’ll be delicious.” Mrs. Masters' gaze turned towards Neil and she started a bit. “Oh my, Neil. I always forget you’re back. Are you still doing good?”
“I sure am, Mrs. Masters. Couldn’t be better!” Neil said before taking another sip of his water.
“Oh, that’s good! And I’m sure Vlad will be doing just as good in a few minutes as well!”
Vlad looked suspiciously at his mom in apprehension. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Mrs. Masters waved him off. “So, Oliver, when are your friends coming over again? I’d love to hear more of your music you’ve been practicing.”
“I’m not sure. I try to keep them away from the house when Vlad is here.”
“Oliver!” Anastasia scolded again as she placed a dish of casserole on the table. “What did I say already? Leave your uncle alone.”
“What, like how he left you guys alone for all those years? Gladly.”
Vlad glared at the boy from across the table. “You can’t even fathom what I went through! You couldn’t possibly know why I left!”
“What’s there to know?” Oliver shouted back, grabbing a big spoon and dishing out a big heaping of casserole. “You were gone for twenty years and you come back and make me feel like there are ants under my skin. There’s only one thing that makes me feel like that. You wanna know what it is?”
Neil placed a hand on Oliver’s shoulder. “Come on, Oliver. Now is not the time. Let’s eat dinner and then later you and I can go get ice cream while they talk stuff out.”
“Go get ice cream? What am I, five? We have ice cream in the fridge anyways.”
“Oliver, don’t use that tone of voice with your father.” Anastasia said as she placed a napkin in her lap.
Picking at his casserole, Oliver let out a mumble. “He’s as much of a father to me as Vlad is an uncle.”
Silence settled over the table as Oliver stared at his food, the adults stared at Oliver, and Mrs. Masters looked between all of them.
Suddenly the silence was broken by knocking on the front door.
“Hey, V-man! It’s me and Maddie!”
“What?!” Vlad shouted, recoiling in his chair.
“Oh, they made it!” Mrs. Masters said, clapping her hands together. “That boy Jack, I remembered how much you loved him when you were younger and I heard that you guys were talking again! So I figured I’d invite them over for the weekend.” She got up from her seat at the table and headed to the door.
Vlad sent a glare towards Anastasia and she shrugged at him apologetically.
“Hiya, Mrs. Masters!” Jack said jovially as the door opened. “It’s been awhile! How are you guys doing?”
“Jack, Maddie!” Mrs. Masters smiled at them. “We’ve been good, come in come in. We just started dinner.”
Jack and Maddie followed Mrs. Masters back into the kitchen where everyone else was still sitting, silently staring at their plates.
“Hi everyone!” Jack bellowed once they made their way in.
“Hi, Jack, hi Maddie.” Anastasia said with a smile. “You didn’t bring the kids with you?”
“No.” Maddie said with a wave of her hand. “Jazz is studying and Danny had plans with his friends this weekend. They’re back home.”
“Oh, that’s a shame. We haven’t seen them in awhile.”
Jack turned towards Neil and held a hand out. “Hi! I’m Jack.” Neil grabbed his hand and shook it as Jack squinted at him. “Say, you look familiar. Have we met before?”
“I think we hung out a few times as kids when you came to visit Vlad. I’m Oliver’s father.”
Jack stared at Neil in shock, turning to look at Anastasia and Oliver, pointing at Neil. “This is Oliver’s dad?” Jack asked in a voice much too quiet for him.
Anastasia nodded and a smile lit up Jack’s face and he scooped Neil into his arms, giving him a bear hug. “Isn’t that amazing! Welcome to the family!”
“Jack, I don’t believe you’re a part of this family.” Vlad said, still staring at his plate.
“You’re kidding me right?” Oliver snapped. “He’s been more of an uncle than you have! He’s been here the last twenty years that you were gone, seeing when you’d come back!”
“He’s the reason I left!” Vlad shouted, slamming his hands down on the table as he stood up. “He’s the reason the accident happened, the reason I was in the hospital, the reason I could never be the same again! He doesn’t deserve to be a part of this family!”
Oliver stared at Vlad with wide eyes, the room was silent again.
“Vladdy-” Jack started.
Aggressively, Vlad pushed his chair in and stomped his way upstairs. Heading into his old bedroom, he slammed the door shut and collapsed on the bed. He lay on the bed, in his room that had hardly changed in the past two decades, but had miraculously stayed clean all that time.
After a few minutes of pouting, Vlad hears a soft knock at his door. He considers going invisible, but that would probably only raise Oliver’s hostility towards him if Vlad just disappeared.
“Vlad?” Jack's voice carries quietly through the door, much more gentle than most times Vlad has heard the man speak. Vlad ignores him, facing the wall next to his bed.
The door slowly opens and Vlad can feel Jack peeking in at him.
“Can we talk?”
“No.” Vlad curls further into himself.
“Okay. Well then, I guess I’ll talk.” Jack closes the door behind him and makes his way to Vlad’s bed where he sits down beside the other man.
Vlad can feel the other man fidgeting behind him. Jack doesn’t fidget. Maybe out of excitement or boredom, but Vlad doesn’t know the last time Jack has fidgeted out of nervousness.
“You know it was an accident, right?” Jack says quietly. This causes Vlad to flinch. Of course he knows it was an accident. That didn’t stop it from ruining his life.
“I had really wanted to show you guys that it’d work. That we could really get into the ghost zone. Maybe if I had just let Maddie put the finishing touches on it then…” Vlad heard a sigh and could tell Jack was running a hand down his face. “That was the worst day of my life.”
This statement startled Vlad, the fist he had been clenching to his chest falling open in his surprise.
“When you screamed, I-” Jack’s words got caught in his throat, but he pushed through. “I thought you were dead. I thought when me and Maddie stood up, that I’d find you dead on the floor.
“And then we could never see you in the hospital, we had to finish school, by the time we had finally arranged a time to come visit you, you were gone. No one knew where you went. We were all scared.”
Guilt filled Vlad’s being, memories of the nightmares he’d had of his ghostly side taking over and hurting his best friends coming to the front of his mind. The terror he’d felt not knowing if he’d follow through with any of it.
Finally, Vlad turned over to his other side to face Jack, his hand coming to rest beside Jack's knee. Vlad kept his eyes averted, but he could feel the other man staring down at him.
“I’m sorry, Vlad.” Jack whispered. “I wish I could’ve said that sooner.”
Taking a deep, shuddering breath, Vlad blinked his eyes a couple times before he lifted an open hand to Jack. Turning his gaze up, Vlad could see Jack’s watery eyes.
Jack gently grabbed his hand, running his thumb along Vlad’s knuckles.
Vlad took another deep breath and closed his eyes. After a few minutes, Vlad heard the door open and close softly. Someone else sat down on the bed near him and small fingers ran through his hair. Distantly he could hear Maddie whispering to Jack, but he was too relaxed by this point to zone back in. He thought about the last time they did this back in college, during midterms.
He hadn’t realized how much he missed this, missed them. Guilt fills his chest again as he thinks about the twenty years he spent away from everyone and he grips Jack’s hand a bit harder.
Never again.

fanfiction
sixty two and a half days later the page break is still missing. such a tragedy
Vlad sat in his seat listening to his english teacher prattle on about who knows what. Anastasia, who sat to his left, leaned over and poked him with her pencil.
“Hey Vlad did you turn into Superman? Because you look like you’re trying to burn holes into her head!”
He scowled at his sister, drawing his gaze down from where it had been resting on the back of Victoria Cavanaugh’s head.
“I am not!” He whispered back, beginning to doodle in his notebook instead.
“Right, of course. You were just staring at her for fifteen minutes.”
Vlad raised his hand. “Mr. Melanky, may I change seats?”
Anastasia gasped as Mr. Melanky looked between the two.
“I suppose, if it’ll help you concentrate Mr. Masters. But it’ll be back to your normal seat tomorrow.”
Vlad stood up and gathered his belongings. As he headed towards the back of the classroom he flashed Anastasia a peace sign which she retaliated against by sticking out her tongue.
Slumping down in his new seat, Vlad opened his notebook again. As he scrawled down notes he heard some jocks excitedly talking to his right.
“We’ll get the beer and the food and you bring the music alright?”
Troy Simpleton. He was the quarterback on Willow High’s football team. While he wasn’t the dullest tool in the shed, he was still fairly foolish and gullible.
“Yeah! I’ll be sure to bring the boombox and my tapes to that haunted shack! It’ll be rad.”
Vlad’s blood ran cold.
Neil Roaf was another jock on the football team. He wasn’t as aloof as Troy and should know better than to taunt the specter’s that inhabited their town.
Vlad and Anastasia already had their own run in with Old Man McConald who still resided in his decaying home. He was different than all the other ghosts that stayed in town after death. He had a vengeance of some sort. Some unfinished business, if you will.
Clearing his throat, Vlad got two glares thrown his way. Nervously, he began to speak.
“If I may… McConald’s house is not the best place to throw a party. The electricity doesn’t work anymore, everything’s falling apart. There’s a malevolent spirit seeking ill will on everyone who steps foot inside.”
Neil rolled his eyes. “Don’t you know that the adults only tell us those stories to keep us out of that house? Why would there be a malevolent ghost in town? Every ghost I’ve seen has been harmless.”
“Yeah!” Troy nodded. “My grandma came back and all she does is knit these ghostly sweaters we can’t wear.”
“No, guys, you don’t understand. Me and Anastasia-”
Neil turned toward the front of the classroom where Anastasia had started working on the homework Mr. Melanky had assigned. “Yo, Ana!”
She turned around in her seat, a surprised smile on her face, only to be met with a slumping Vlad and a sure-faced jock.
“You’re not tormenting Vlad again, are you Neil?”
“Psh, what?” Neil scoffed. “As if. We were just talking about Old Man McConald’s house. Vlad’s over here trying to tell me that there really is an evil spirit in there.”
Anastasia shivered, squeezing her eyes shut at the memories. “Yep. Definitely an evil spirit in there. Barreled us out of the house and onto the lawn. My skin felt like ants were crawling under it while we caught our breath outside.”
Victoria turned around in her seat at the front of the classroom, calling back to them in an indifferent tone. “Maybe if you weren’t all douchebags, and just like, knocked on the door he wouldn’t chase you out of his home.”
Anastasia snorted. “Not all of us are spooky-ooky bat people who like to hang out at abandoned houses.”
“Well excuse me for wanting to spend time with the dearly departed.”
“As if.”
Silence reigned in between the students as Anastasia’s words sank in.
“Anastasia?” Vlad said, shocked.
Her eyes widened. “I just meant… No one lives there anymore and- We’ve never heard anything about his family- He just-” She sighs. “If he were dearly departed would his existence be what it is?”
No one responded and soon the bell signaling the end of class rang and students began to pack their bags. As Vlad was stuffing his notebook inside his backpack, Neil walked up to him rubbing the back of his neck.
“Hey, Vlad. I, uh. Thanks? For telling us that those rumors weren’t just rumors. I know we like to live precariously sometimes but I don’t want anyone getting hurt, y’know?”
Vlad nodded, zipping his bag and slinging it over his shoulders. “Yeah, no problem. Better safe than sorry in a haunted town anyways.”
Neil chuckled. “Yeah… You got me there. See you later. Bye, Ana!”
He waved at Anastasia, who excitedly waved back, and walked out of the classroom.
Together, Vlad and Anastasia made their way to their next class. The hallways were filled with too many students and some walked through walls while others disappeared in the middle of the hallway.
