Pokemon Card of the Day #2992: Caterpie (Neo Discovery)
Caterpie looked like the standard evolving Basic Pokemon, and for the most part it was. Being able to hit for 20 damage for a Colorless Energy was pretty cool but other Pokemon had done that without taking recoil damage. The difference here was that Caterpie was a Grass-type, and there was a time where a deck starring a Pokemon that had a Grass Weakness was dominant. That, plus Darkness Energy letting any Pokemon get a boost, suddenly made such a simple idea really interesting for decks that already ran Darkness Energy to fuel something like Murkrow. Believe it or not, Caterpie wasn't useless at all.
The stats here, unsurprisingly, weren't that impressive. 50 HP was in a range where a lot of decks were able to get a KO, and doing that was made even easier if Caterpie attacked due to multiple sources of recoil. That being said, once things like Kingdra and Dark Gengar started showing up it could survive a single hit occasionally, though Caterpie was almost never in play for those match-ups. A Fire Weakness technically made the Blaine's Arcanine and Magcargo match-ups marginally worse, as if Caterpie was ever going to get something done there. The Retreat Cost was 1, in case you took out a Totodile but the opponent had a Cleffa to sit behind after that. You could, of course, just go for a lucky hit on a Cleffa instead, but more on that in a second.
Spin Tackle didn't seem like too much. 20 damage for a Colorless Energy was a solid attack for a Basic Pokemon, though 10 in recoil wasn't great. The thing here was that Totodile, an extremely common card due to Feraligatr, had 50 HP and was Weak to Grass. If an opponent started with a single Totodile and you went first, a Caterpie with a Darkness Energy attached could get a KO and win the game. Just getting a Totodile out of play in general for a Prize was pretty useful. You could even go for a Spin Tackle on a lone Baby Pokemon if you wanted to, as it would also KO, but the odds of that working were lower.
Caterpie got into some decks back in the Rocket-On format for that small chance that it could just get in there and win a game on turn 1. There was nothing stopping a player from attacking when going first, so a lone Totodile or sometimes a Cleffa or something would be a target. The strategy required having Darkness Energy in the deck for the damage boost as well, so not every deck was fit for a Caterpie. Modern takes on Rocket-On are much more diverse as well, so Caterpie doesn't get seen much in that. In the past, however, it was something to really keep in mind, as putting a single Pokemon in play was sometimes a huge risk.

Unown Y and Corsola cards
New cards! Today I'm happy to finally add Corsola (Neo Discovery) and Unown Y (Neo Revelation) to my collection. Both sets still require 22 cards each to complete.
With the addition of Corsola, Neo Discovery now only requires rares and holos. Wish me luck…

Short exerpt from the first WIP I intend to finish:
The Investigator had never been a fortunate man. As a child games of chance, which were often enjoyed and marketed within the Facilitated Learning Environment he had spent most of his youth, always seemed to punish the young Investigator for playing.
Instead, he had found his own forms of entertainment. Sometimes pilfering from the machines when no one was around, other times calculating the probabilities of certain children hitting a big win. The investigator learnt sooner than most that whilst skills grew and amalgamated into ever polished tools, luck was a currency easily spent and impossible to nurture.

Pokemon Card of the Day #2982: Igglybuff (Neo Discovery)
Igglybuff's potential value relied entirely on the game around it, as it didn't do anything but mess with a Pokemon Power on the opponent's Bench. In some match-ups, this could be almost required, especially in the Rocket-On format as it was played in the past without the Slowking errata. In others, it could be completely useless. This made it an odd sort of Pokemon as sometimes you'd want half a Bench full of Igglybuff and sometimes you wanted nothing to do with it. It made for an interesting card for deck building, that was for sure.
30 HP was the standard Baby Pokemon number, and was very vulnerable to attacks that actually got through. There was no Weakness or Resistance here, and Igglybuff, like other Baby Pokemon, could retreat for free which was really nice. Nothing about this was surprising, however.
As a Baby Pokemon, if the Defending Pokemon attacked while Igglybuff was Active, the opponent had to flip a coin. If tails, the attack failed and their turn ended. This brings up the whole double flip with Focus Band thing, though you'd usually be using Focus Bands more on Cleffa since it was likely to be ending turns as the Active Pokemon. If you did need Igglybuff to shut off Dark Vileplume or something, it was potentially worth the attachment anyway, but it really depended on if this was just being somewhat helpful or keeping your deck's strategy together in a particular game.
Igglybuff had no attack and just a Pokemon Power. Gaze could be used once during your turn, and it had you choose 1 of the opponent's Benched Pokemon that had a Pokemon Power. That power stopped working, but only until the end of your turn. The traditional use was to shut off Slowking, as Slowking made Trainer cards into a coin flip when on the Bench. Modern takes on Rocket-On typically give it an errata to only work when Active due to how it worked originally in Japan, and Igglybuff, which got around 3 copies in a lot of decks back then, suddenly got very little use in the new version, and the same went for both versions of Neo-On. It still had some use against Dark Vileplume or a Benched Brock's Ninetales, so it was worth thinking about.
Igglybuff, depending on how you played, was getting multiple copies in most decks or 1 at most in decks that wanted Dark Vileplume protection. It only mattered against Pokemon that had Pokemon Powers working against you on your turn, since the effect didn't even carry over to the opponent's next turn. If your deck did have a bad match-up against the more notable Pokemon Powers like this, it was worth putting one in a deck. If actually trying out Slowking at its full, mistranslated peak (I don't suggest doing this, it's not fun), include as many Igglybuff in your deck as you want.

album of the month - i
the album that has been in my mind rent free for the past month:
Orange - Fishmans
genres: neo-psychedelia; shibuya-kei; funk rock.
it also has the (somewhat) tones of a dream-pop album (something the band will eventually shift into in their later albums)
released on 1994.
kinda funky and chill; if you’re also looking to expand your music horizons i reckon this is a pretty good starting point. don’t expect anything too crazy, if you’re feeling energetic this might bring you back down to earth. in all honesty, this album feels like a very warm & nice embrace, it does resonate with the color ‘’orange’’ and it feels as if it’s embodying it. this album holds a very dear place in my heart always & forever.
my favorite song (and also the first one i listened to) from the album has always been "忘れちゃうひととき" (Wasurechau Hitotoki). just lovely.
track listing:
"Intro" (0:21)
"気分" (4:22)
"忘れちゃうひととき" (5:44)
"My Life" (3:50)
"Melody" (5:46)
"帰り道" (3:10)
"感謝(驚)" (5:49)
"Woofer Girl" (5:07)
"夜の想い" (5:41)
i am not here to judge music or give a ‘’classic’’ review, rather, i am here to share some of my favorite songs / albums since i have way too many saved and not enough people to share ‘em with.
hope you groove to it as well!
