Huge content warning for transphobia and, of course, the death of a child. Also worth noting is that they were a member of the Choctaw Nation.

To summarise both articles linked below, Nex had been bullied previously to the incident of February 7th. Nex and their best friend — also trans — were in a fight with some girls in the girls' bathroom. Nex sustained head injuries due to their assualt.

The school district didn't call emergency services, and suspended Nex for two weeks. Nex went to the hospital with their family, and was discharged after speaking with police. The next day, the 8th of February 2024, on their way to an appointment, they collapsed, and died shortly thereafter.

It is stated in The Independent article that the reason for Nex's family deadnaming them after their death was due to simple mistakes because of the stress. Nex's family did their best to support them in life, and weren't aware of how bad the bullying was getting.

Even if Nex's cause of death was suicide and not directly linked to brain trauma from the beating they received, the fact they were bullied for a year, ganged up on and beaten up and ultimately fucking died as a result of the bullying and beating doesn't make their death ""their own fault"", which we all know why it was ruled a fucking suicide and not the murder it was.

Nex was a non binary CHILD who ultimately died because their school wouldn't do anything about their bullying and their state wouldn't see them as who they were. It does not MATTER if it was suicide or if it was directly caused by the trauma to their brain, Nex fucking died because of queerphobia in the state of Oklahoma.

K I'mma go on a rant about this because it is extremely fucked up

Okay so I don't know much on this situation with Nex Benedict(rest in piece 🕊) but I can say that it is extremely messed up with the fact that Nex told their mom about them being bullied they had also told the school but yet much like other schools, they didn't do Jack shit about it which also ADDS TO THE FUCKED UP METER. Nex was in the bathroom with their friends (one being Transgender), Nex basically was Jumped in the girls bathroom (due to the fact the school they went to does not allow students to use the bathroom of the preferred gender) by 3 girls, the three girls repeatedly slammed Nex's head into the ground, the friends got the school nurse who basically said "just come to the nurses office whenever you want" which Nex went home after the school suspended NEX FOR NO DAMN REASON, their grandmother took them to the ER and Nex was discharged later on, the next day Nex Collapsed and by time the Emergency Medics arrived to the location Nex was no longer breathing. SO THE MAIN IDEA OF THIS RANT IS... the three girls that jumped Nex Should be in juvie for attempted murder along with being expelled from the school, the nurse should have her license REVOKED because the first thing she should have done was keep Nex laying down on the ground and then call the ER. the principal should have done something to the three girls who jumped Nex along with the fact the principal should have lost their Job because of Negligence. I believe Currently people are trying to interview the school staff, again this is beyond fucked up, Nex was most likely around my age either being 13, 14 or 15, Nex was still young and most likely had their life ahead of them, Nobody of LGBTQ+ nor Anyone in General should be harmed like that. If you want more info research it. The school tried to lie saying that what happened was not the cause of Nex's death when it very obviously was. That is the end of my rant, if I missed anything feel free to reblog this post to add onto it or correct it, please don't be rude about it.

as someone who has lived in oklahoma for over ten years and been through the public school system there since elementary school, hearing about the death of nex benedict barely shook the earth for me until i saw that not only people from my community were outraged by it—i genuinely felt like oklahoma was this vacuum where everything awful happens to queer kids and nothing would ever be fixed, and seeing people from all over the globe show their anger and horror about this poor 15 year old's death and with how fucking evil ryan walters is has been life changing. we're not alone out here. i'm not alone. rest in power nex.

I'm sorry to any of my fellow trans followers (or followers who are family to trans people) who just- cannot look at the posts I'm Reblogging about Nex right now- it took me two days before I could look at anything about it myself I understand. It is, exaugsting having to publicly mourn and bury our dead every few months (or less). I do not begrudge you the space you need. I have tagged and will continue to tag every post with the Real World Events CW tag, the same one I use for any other ugly story that you might need a moment's breath before facing or more.

However.

I fucking Live Here. I am a Nonbinary Oklahoman who only avoided experiencing the hell of being queer in the oklahoma school system by being thoroughly failed by mine before I was cognizant enough to put words to my identity. Nex Benedict is the same age as my younger brother, they were only 5 years younger then me, they were barely more then a baby, and the hatred that has bred and curdled in my fucking HOME killed them.

This isn't just awareness when we scream their name. This is a public expression of Grief, this is our way of making people remember they were a person- if we had the honor to know them or not.

They were a 16 year old child who loved their cat (Zeus, as I've gathered from a few reports), who played minecraft, who decompressed with music after school. They were a human being who's loved ones have described to us strangers as a light. They were Choctaw, identified as twospirit and loved as their own authentic self by their family.

I wish I didn't know these facts. I wish Nex Benedict was a stranger to me because they survived and lived and loved in a whole different part of the state to me. I wish that they got to grow up in the safety of privacy. I wish that their name wasn't echoed across the world because they were murdered. I wish they got to choose when and if they were known this openly.

Nex, I am so fucking sorry you did not get to grow up in a time and space where our government valued your life. You deserved so much more.
