Demo Updated: August 3, 2023 (Chapter 2, Part 1)

You're next in line for the throne of Castelon, a fictional country loosely based on different periods of history, such as Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, and periods of England.

A 10-year war with your country's main adversary, Arandale, recently ended. Then your father, King Percival was assassinated. After his assassination, your twin, Prince James abdicated. Return home after 5 years and decide what kind of Harbinger you will be.

Prepare to step into a story of betrayal, love, and trust. Can you navigate your royal duties, solve your father's murder, and find love (or friendship) at the same time? Or, will the Gods withdraw their blessings from you?

Demo features:

Play as male, female, non-binary;

Prologue, Chapter 1, Chapter 2 Part 1;

Shape your MC's future and some of their past.

Pursue romance and/or friendship with 4 different characters.

Choose 1 of 3 Family Mottos.

Get a taste of "Attributes", which will unlock choices throughout the game. More Attributes will be available in the coming chapters.

Choose a patron god or goddess (optional).

Choose a pet (who you'll meet in chapter 2).

The final game will be rated Mature. The current version is rated 16+. Please note all of the below content is not in the demo but planned for the finished game. NSFW asks are tagged #nsfw so please block if applicable!

Constantine is the best friend of your twin brother, James, and a Knight in Castelon's Elite Guard. He is fiercely loyal to your family and fought alongside James in the Arandale War. Like you, he finds amusement in teasing your brother.

"You're not too different from your twin, both reckless royals, so you probably need someone to care for you."

F. Faramund | M or F, 22 years old, Aquarius, #f faramund

Whether F was your first love or your ex-best friend, they broke your trust and disappeared. Now, they're back and seemingly apologetic. Bury the hatchet, rekindle your former relationship, or walk a different path altogether.

Felix Faramund | M, 24 years old, Aries, #felix faramund

Felix is F.'s older brother and was someone you once considered a friend. Like, F., he's returned to Castelon. Unlike F., he can be quick to anger and he's not afraid to speak his mind. He can read the room, he just doesn't care. You can romance Felix, even if you loved F.

Next in Line is an interactive fiction in development. It was originally planned as a visual novel. (I am still updating to remove visual novel references across social media, apologies). So, while most of the writing for the demo is complete, I am currently revising it to better fit the interactive fiction format, as well as to give players more agency. The game will be free.

You're next in line for the throne of Castelon, a fictional country very loosely inspired but not based on the ancient and medieval worlds. Particularly, Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece, and periods of England.

Shortly after the war ended and a month before your 21st birthday, you received a hastily written letter at the compound in the mountains, where your parents had sent you at 16 to keep you away from the war.

"King dead. James abdicated. You are Next in Line."

Your country is reeling from its King's death and the end of a decade-long war. Today, on your 21st birthday, you begin the timeless tradition of sharing the responsibility of running Castelon for the next year, alongside your mother, Queen Vivian. This tradition, known as The Harbinger Ceremony, is your opportunity to prove your ability to be a reliable ruler.

Prepare to step into a story about love, trust, and finding oneself. Can you navigate your royal duties, solve your father's murder, and find love (or friendship) at the same time? Or, will the Gods withdraw their blessing from you?

Next in Line will be rated Mature. Player direction advised. Please do not play or plan to play if you feel this game could cause any harm to you, or your emotional, or mental wellbeing. If you have questions about the content, please let me know and I'll do my best to answer!

Anticipated Demo Release: Late July / August 2022 (most likely August)

Demo Features:

Prologue Part 1, Prologue Part 2, Chapter 1

Choose your gender (M, F, NB), pronouns, first name, hair color, eye color

Shape the MC's future and some of their past.

Pursue romance or friendship with various characters. See characters further down this post.

Players will not choose sexual orientation - it's up to you to pursue romance if you want or simply don't. All currently planned ROs (3) are romanceable by any MC. Note: there are no poly routes available.

Romance is optional in the game. Although, it should be noted this was originally planned as a romance game so there will be a lot of optional romance content.

3 Family Mottos (based on an early choice) that will unlock various choices throughout the game.

A taste of the "Attributes" system- a personality system that unlocks additional choices throughout the game; my aim here is to make the game replayable in a refreshing way. What kind of Heir will you be?

Full Game Features:

Everything listed above, plus...

Chapters 2-14;

Characters may disapprove or become upset or angry by some of your choices - this does not prevent MC from romance. Like reality, everyone in MC's life is not always going to agree with them.

At least 5 holidays that offer opportunities to honor the gods, further relationships, or simply have a good time;

Optional sexual content;

At least 6 endings;

An extensive stats screen where you can read about yourself, your relationship with others, and the world around you.

Chapters 2-13 will each cover the span of one month. The full game will follow roughly a year of the MC's life as The Harbinger.

The mysterious Lady Margaret is a noble businesswoman who enjoys observing from the shadows. You know little about her, but she could prove to be a powerful ally, if you play your cards right.

Prince James Verissimo [M], 21 years old

Your twin brother was next in line to the throne. Until he wasn't. His abdication took you by surprise. While you were sent to the compound in the mountains during the war, your twin was sent to war. You and your brother were close growing up, but it's up to you how your relationship plays out moving forward.

Queen Vivian Verissimo [F], 45 years old

Your mother, the Queen of Castelon, is a cunning and nosy woman. As a child, your father was the affectionate one, while your mother was the parent who wanted to ensure you understood the realities of the world. It was a surprise when she agreed with your father to send you away from the war. Perhaps she knew you would play an important role one day.

Lady Anna [F], 20 years old

Anna is your best friend and attendant. Where you go, she goes. She came to the palace as an orphaned child of a minor noble house. Anna is the constant in your life - the one person you've always been able to rely on. She might have a crush on your brother.

Felix Faramund [M], 24 years old

F.'s slightly older brother. Like F., he's returned to Castelon. Unlike F., Felix can be quick to anger and he's not afraid to speak his mind. He can read the room, he just doesn't care. You once considered him a friend.

Oracle Davina [F], ??? years old

Davina holds one of the most revered positions in the Kingdom - the voice of the gods. Her duties include overseeing The Harbinger Ceremony and serving on the Royal Council.

Chapter 2 Sneak Peek

Not anything spoilery below but here's a snippet of arriving at the Orphanage in Chapter 2, if you chose that as your charity.

The door to the orphanage opens as you reach the top step.

A young man who appears to be around your age bows. “Your Highness! Welcome to our Sanctuary.” He steps back and signals for you to step inside.

“We’re honored by your presence. Oh - I’m Deux. Apologies for not introducing myself! ” Deux runs a hand through his long hair as a nervous laugh falls from his lips. “We haven’t had a royal visitor since I was a kid. The last visit was from the King, your dad.” The smile slips from his lips. “Sorry, uhm, I didn’t mean…uh..my condolences, Your Highness.” He hangs his head, eyes boring into the cracked floor.

[[Let him hang his head as you brush past. He never should have opened his mouth.]]

[[Offer a disarming smile and gentle words to ease him.]]

[[Let out a sigh as you tell him not to worry about it. You hate this behavior. People thinking you can’t handle reality.]]

[[Push back tears. You know he didn’t mean any harm but you’re not in a good place right now.]]

[[Laugh lightly as you tell him not to worry about it. It’s kind of endearing how innocent his heart is.]]

Felix: Felix walks into the room and sees your lion/wolf laying on his side of the bed. He tilts his head a bit. “Whatcha doing kitty/doggy? That’s my spot.” Your lion/wolf lets out a yawn. Felix quickly walks over to the bed and when he sees you’re not going to help, he starts pushing your pet (gently of course). “Come on!” When your pet doesn’t budge, he sighs and starts rubbing their head. “Too cute to be mad at,” he mumbles.

He catches your amused look and narrows his eyes at you. "You think this is funny, do you?" He chuckles and walks around the bed to your side. Then he climbs on, straddling you. "Well, looks like we're just going to have to sleep really close," he says with a smirk. Then, Felix leans close to your face to whisper, "Lucky you."

Constantine: On the outside, he’s calm and collected, giving your wolf/lion a belly rub. Internally, he’s wondering if he needs to sleep with an eye open. You’ll be the death of me, MC, he thinks. Perhaps, literally. He lets out a sigh and smiles at you from across the room, since you're leaning against the door.

Finally, his legs start to tingle from circulation loss and he gets out of bed to stretch. Grinning at you, he runs over and picks you up, easily throwing you on his shoulder. He plops down on your side of the bed, sprawling you across him. "It's clear that the only solution is for us to sleep really close," he tells you in a low voice. "I should have known it would end up like this, trouble." He throws you a fond look. "My trouble."

There you are - just as I remember you.

And yet, somehow different.

In the most majestic way.

F's green eyes trace your movements, never losing sight of you. How could anyone lose sight of the one bright light in this world of darkness?

Finally, F tears their gaze away, heart in their throat, mind in a panic.

So long I've waited to see you and here I am, unsure. No words can right my wrongs. And no words can ensure you understand that my heart beats only with the hope of knowing your love once again.

F takes a deep breath, willing themself to be patient.

The time will come. I will bare my truth and await your judgment.

Constantine: He watches your peaceful, sleeping face for a few minutes. You look the happiest here and it's his favorite part of the morning. He hates waking you up and wishes he didn't have to. His chapped lips kiss your forehead, then your cheeks. Your eyes flutter open slowly, taking in the sight of him, with the sun shining through the window onto his tanned chest. "Morning," he whispers softly.

You scoot closer and give him your best puppy dog eyes. "Let's cuddle," you implore.

He chuckles. "Alright, only for twenty minutes or so."

You smile and put your head on his chest, enjoying the warmth. "We can do a lot of things in twenty minutes," you tell him.

He shakes his head, running a hand down your arm. "You're trouble."

Felix: Felix stares up at the ceiling, deciding on the best approach to waking you. Sometimes he'll tickle you, or trace a finger along your cheek, relishing in your loveliness. But today he wants to wake you up with food. So he quietly gets dressed and heads to the kitchen. He returns half an hour later with a spread of your favorite breakfast. After setting the tray down on his side of the bed, he sits down and gently shakes your shoulder. Your eyes open and you look around groggily. "I hate mornings," you mutter.

He chuckles. "I'm aware grumpy pants." You give him a glare but it quickly disappears when you smell breakfast. You sit up and he sets the tray onto your lap.

You shove some food in your mouth as he watches amused. "Thank you," you say with a bright smile.

Margaret: You stir awake at the sound of Margaret moving around. You sit up, eyes half closed. "Another hour," you whine.

She rolls her eyes and shoves a cup of tea in your hands. "I'm not your mother - do whatever you want." You sip from the tea, letting out a sigh.

"Oh, but speaking of...your mother expects to see you in twenty minutes." There's a small smirk on her lips as she watches your eyes widen in panic. Then she heads to the door, looking over her shoulder. "See you there," she tells you with a wink.

F: F knows how you are in the morning, so they want to make it as easy as possible for you. So, they always wake first and lay out clothes for you. Then they run a bath, waiting until the temperature is to your liking. When that's all set, they squeeze your hand and give you a gentle shake. "It's morning," they say softly.

You sigh and give their hand a squeeze. You've already come to expect it because they do this every morning for you, even when you told them they don't have to. But they insist. You glance into their green eyes and smile. "Thank you, F."

"Of course, " they reply, pulling the covers away from you. "I'll have the servants set up breakfast in the meantime." You give them a quick kiss on the cheek before heading to your bath.

Chapter 2 Planned Content

Hi Harbingers! I'll be releasing demo v1.1 on Friday with some updates. Nothing major as I am trying to take a break this week, but it's progress.

In the meantime, without giving away spoilers, here are some things planned for Chapter 2. Obviously, subject to change as I never want to "force" scenes that might fit better elsewhere but I've already outlined the chapters. Here's a broad overview:

Chapter 2:

Meet your pet (and choose their fur color, if applicable <3);

Learn more about your time at the compound (and things you learned);

Leave the castle and visit the Capital;

Choose a hobby/interest;

Margaret's Birthday;

Learn more details about why F left in the first place;

Hold court for the first time;

Choose a charity to support.

Constantine: You are not the first he has lost and you will not be the last. But you are the one. The one who taught him to live a life with love. The one who opened his eyes to the reality that each of us can be loved - will be loved by someone. Despite our scars, despite our mistakes, despite our fears.

"Please Letum, it's not their time!" But his desperate words are lost to the winds of change. As you breathe your last breath, he forgets how to breathe his next. He leans his forehead against yours, eyes stinging. Anger and agony embrace him - a kind of armor for his newly hardened heart. He will not love anyone again.

F: You are not long for this world and F kisses you for the final time. There is no doubt in their mind that you are lost to this world. "My love," they say, stroking your hair. "I will find you again in Avernus. I will always find you again." Their voice is not smooth or sweet, but it is sure.

They have lived a life without before and they are not prepared to do so again. But they must have faith. Have faith that you will be waiting when they leave this world. Because they do not know how to move forward without it.
