Queens of the Round Table : Bikini Kill - Revolution Girl Style Now

I proudly welcome some new queens to the round table today. Taking a pew with Angel Olsen (the first inductee) as they probably chat about all the things that a mere schmo mortal like me cannot understand.  

Not so much being invited to take a seat so much as smashing their way into the joint proclaiming “I believe in the radical possibilities of pleasure, babe”.

“Fair enough” says Olsen. “Would you like some tea?” 

“Ooooooh tea” says everyone's favourite riot grrrrl.

And thus a pew was taken.

Bikini Kill - Revolution Girl Style Now

There have been many labels thrown at Bikini Kill. Feminist icons. Leaders of a movement. Many more have spoken about what they bring to the table as a (mostly) female punk band. 

All these distractions can lead one to forget the fundamentals. Yes they may be feminist icons. Yes they were at the forefront of a movement. And yes, they bring hella heat to the table as ladies in the scene. Strip all the talk away and you're left with one fact :

Bikini Kill are a fucking amazing punk band. 

They’re ike a truly beautifully brutal kick in the mammaries type of force that makes it one of the vinyls i own where, when listening to them, I'm genuinely thinking : “I'm probably pissing off so many people at once right now with this racket.” 

What can you do? Oh right yeah turn it down. Fuck that for a game o’ checkers.

Revolution Girl Style Now was (I think) the only album type thingy that I didn't have by the Kill. So I ordered it as quick as I could get my revolution-loving paws on it. Not long after I'd sent for it I read the history behind this release.

It is actually a demo album that was recorded the night after a house party at BK’s first ever gig. The equipment was all still set up so away they went, playing the whole thing live. And RevolutionGSN was born.  

I'd heard all these songs before in various forms (apart from the unreleased demos that make up the last 3 tracks) and most all of them had become anthems to my life. But my idiotic brain would start to worry.

What if its incoherent? Are the inevitable odd mistakes going to be gutting rather than a charm? Do I need inferior versions of the already beautifully raw sounds I had so lovingly let under my skin and into my conscious?

It’s Bikini Kill. It's produced by Fugazi’s Guy Picciotto. The needle only has to reach the opening chord on the record before you're strapped into the roller coaster and gleefully willing it to tip over the edge into lake fucking carnage.

 Glorious I tells ya. GLORIOUS!!!!!!!

Lead singer Kathleen Hanna (bows) has always had a way with words. Not in the slightest bit concerned with a cryptic message or a ‘look under the layers for the meaning’ in her lyrics, Hanna (bows) will say some variation of “STOP BEING A FUCKING DICK” and its up to you how you process this information. Many (many) people have gotten offended. Many more have taken this ladies proclamations into their lives and claimed her as their one true queen for saying what others may not.

As you can imagine, this type of venting sounds ferocious when nailed down on record. And the band only reinforce this ferocity with their cracking noisesy noise. And it IS a racket. Like someone has grabbed your top lip, pulled it over your head, and shoved it up your arsehole.

Have I mentioned that its glorious?

Side A opens with tracks Candy, Daddy’s L’il Girl, and Feels Blind and shows the capabilities of the band when they don't have to play fast and hard to be ferocious. These three tracks (more so in this live setting) are slower paced to a lot of later songs but are still easily as angry and powerful as many speedier, harder, more conventionally hardcore sounds. The band have something to say. And that's where the power lies.  

Of course by the time Suck My Left One, Carnival, and This Is Not A Test speed things up before closing the side, Kathleen (bows) is as worked up as a wasp caught under a glass whilst you clink away at the sides. You know when that needle hits (you remove the glass) you're going to be dealing with one seriously fucked-off wasp.

Beneath all the rightfully super-serious lyrics that spew from the record, not a lot of people credit the band enough for one thing : They're bloody hilarious.

Feels Blind is a dark and angry anthem that, whilst still completely getting its message across, still makes me produce a smile at the blackest of humour as Kathleen shouts :

“How does it feel to be blind?

How does it feel?

IT FEELS FUCKING BLIND”

Or the bounce around the room brilliance of Carnival as a tale is being told about the seedy underbelly of the carnival before halfway through (and in between verses) Kathleen screams : 

“I’LL WIN THAT MOTLEY CRUE MIRROR IF IT FUCKING KILLS ME”

The message is never lost throughout it all. Bikini Kill are rightfully a voice for many disillusioned women (and men). But I still wanna ignore her warnings, go to a carnival, and win Kathleen that mirror.

In closing I'd like to touch upon the track Double Dare Ya.

For so many people, Bikini Kills Rebel Girl is the anthem for a movement. It's unapologetic foot-stomping and shout-along chorus make you want to smash some shit through a movement. This is how Double Dare makes me feel more than any other song I've ever heard.

From its opening declaration of “We’re Bikini Kill and we want revolution, girl style now” right up until it's closing segment of noise and feedback, this song gets right into my body and soul and makes me feel more alive than any other track ever.

This is my Rebel girl. This is my foot stomp. This is a declaration of intent that screams at me to get the fuck up and be someone regardless of what you're told you can't.

And whether you like Bikini Kill or not, that's gotta be a glorious thing.
