Cheating on Amtrak
Notes on some atypical travel along the Northeast Corridor.
I did something Wednesday that I used to scoff at: I went from Washington to New York via plane, not train. Then I opted for the same mode of travel to get from NYC to Boston, another route on which door-to-door travel times can be shorter by rail than air. I feel a little dirty about those less-than-green travel choices, but I had my reasons this time. Cost was foremost among them. Amtrak…

Un Petit Conversation
- City of Boston, Jamaica Plain; Forest Hills Station -
(Reginald takes the orb from Samuel's bag) Samuel: A–Attends! Mère te possiblement voir de cette orb!Reginald: Est-ce le cas? Ainsi… Bonsoir, Mère Scélérate Bélan— Samuel: (Takes his ball back and puts it in his bag) D'accord, c'est la limite pour maintenant. Reginald: Bon, peut-être je te visite bientôt ou tard. Nous pourrons prendre le train ensemble par quantité. Par temps, souvent. (Both hear the sounds of train bells as a train arrives quickly towards the platform) Bien, j'y vais chez moi maintenant! À bientôt, Samuel! (The train starts to leave) À bientôt!!! Samuel: À bientôt, Régis Powell! À… bien—tôt… (Samuel sees his train pull in quickly to the station, then it releases a PA Call) A–A—Attends! (Samuel runs up the stairs) Attends une minute! (Continues eating his donut from Mike's Donuts, and then dashes through the fare gates, making his way to the metro and boards that train.)

Amtrak Awards Construction Contract for Frederick Douglass Tunnel
Amtrak has awarded a contract to Kiewit/J.F. Shea Joint Venture to build the new Frederick Douglass Tunnel in Baltimore. The new passenger rail tunnel will serve electrified Amtrak and MARC commuter trains with two parallel, single-track tunnel tubes, each approximately two miles long. This new infrastructure will support significantly faster travel speeds than the existing B&P Tunnel, where…

Happy Train Talk Tuesday, I made a tier list of Northeast Corridor stations based off of which ones deserve a steakhouse cause I was bored
Note that in the grand scheme of things, I don't think any station needs a steakhouse, I'm just using this as an excuse to rag on stations on the Northeast Corridor lol
DC Union: People who live in the capitol of this country don't deserve anything good. Enough said
Boston South: Even if space was made in South Station for a steakhouse it would probably be used for a Dunkin Donuts
Grand Central: It doesn't deserve one cause there's another station in New York that could use one far more
New Haven-Union: Haven't seen much of this one myself but I don't like CDOT so down it goes
Secaucus: This was just kinda a random pull, Newark or Hoboken could work here as well
30th Street: With the renovations going up it's more than time to add a steakhouse so you can eat whatever the fuck a cheesesteak is
New York Penn: What the fuck is the point of a massive train hall if you can't eat a few ribeyes while waiting for a train
Ok thanks for reading see ya

Amtrak Cancellations Amidst Winter's Grip on the Northeast Corridor
Amtrak has recently faced disruptions along the vital Northeast Corridor line connecting Washington, New York, and Boston. Extreme cold and an impending snowstorm have prompted the federal passenger railway to cancel at least a dozen Acela trips, part of a broader series of nationwide cancellations due to winter weather. These cancellations have left seats available on various Acela and…

Adieu to 2023
2023 is history. Not that I will look back upon it fondly. Too many scary things reared their ugly heads during the year gone by. I fear though, that 2024 will disappoint us even more. November 2024 will be a water shed moment for the US. And I am not hopeful. But enough of these dark thoughts. It has been quite a while since the last blog appeared here. I just never seemed to find the time and…

The Acela is showing its age, and seeing its replacement parked in a rail yard doesn't help
Seeing Amtrak's next-generation Acela trains parked in a yard in Philadelphia has become of my least-favorite parts of the Northeast Corridor experience.
PHILADELPHIA The train that I boarded in Boston Wednesday afternoon looked more than a little scruffy on the outside. The black seals around its windows had faded in parts to white, the windows themselves showed streaks of dirt, and the paint looked chipped and peeling in places–maybe not a surprise after almost 23 years of hard service on the Northeast Corridor, but still sad compared to what…

If you're doing a 30 Plus Teams Tour of Norfolk, Virginia, all the way to Boston, Massachusetts, go by America's National Train Service, Amtrak. The Northeast Corridor train starts in Norfolk, Virginia and ends at the Back Bay Station. It's the most popular route for the Amtrak trains and takes the most population.
