Part 1 of my God and Goddess paintings! - Nyx, the Greek goddess and personification of night.
I wanted to do the primordial goddess Nyx first, since she is the one I have always loved the most ever since I was young. She is the child of Chaos, and mother to some gods and goddesses such as Thanatos, Hypnos, Eris, Aether, and Hemera and many more.
She is described as a winged goddess or with a dark cloud halo or dressed in black surrounded by a dark mist. I tried my best to depict her as I see her, while going off of the original depictions described online.
Nyx is also one of the only gods Zeus feared and that is one of the facts that made me love her when I read up on her in greek mythology books as a kid. She is so mysterious, powerful, and all around a beautiful and enchanting goddess.
Next painting I think I'll do Gaia or Chaos, and I'm so excited to share them with you guys.

NYX - Goddess of the Night
Tumblr media
NYX is the Goddess of the night. According to Greek myth, before there was life there was Chaos. Nyx was born of this Chaos as the personification of the night. She is the only one Zeus fears as she is older, and he is unaware of her powers. Sometimes her children were referred to as "The Children of the Night" embodying aspects of darkness. These include Thanatos (Death), Hypnos (Sleep), and Nemesis (Retribution). Not all of her offspring are dark entities. She lived with her daughter beyond the horizon at Tartarus. Hemera was the personification of Day. They crossed paths twice a day as each went off to perform their respective duties of bringing about night and day.
Origin - Ancient Greece
Dominion - Prophecy, rest, revealing truth, Oracles
Symbols - Stars and Moon
Colors - Dark Blue and Purple and Black
Tarot Cards - The Moon, The Star, and Death
Workings- Divination, Prophetic Dreaming, Manipulating Dreams, Astral Projection, Deep Meditation, Astrology, Self-Discovery, Shadow Work, and Mental Health Healing
Prayer for NYX:
"Spangled lady of the darkest skies, Mother of sleep, dreams bringing balance to the world, we honor you in the sunless hours, the stillness your hymn, the stars your votive offerings. We offer you our day-weary minds, vessels desperate for the transformation, of your soothing black weight, end our attachment to that which is easily known. Please show us the beauty in the inky darkness, allow us to see the things that hide in the day, bring us your mysteries, your shadowy knowledge, and soothe us with the rest when we are weary"

To be a Nyx devotee is to look up at the night sky and know just how much power you hold. Don’t let other people treat you like shit because they are afraid of the dark

There is the Darkness, with very form of black, with every shadow and shade by His side, with black eyes and cold breath. Here’s most of the items that I keep on or near my Nyx altar. There are a couple things I’ve made myself, those being the dark blue pouch, the moon phase altar cloth, a small brown spell pouch (for peaceful sleep), the small spell bottle (also for sleep) and the black pearl necklace.

I keep things I associate with sleep near Nyx’s altar, to honour her son, Hypnos, the god of sleep. I do also try to honour some of her other children as well, such as Thanatos, god of death, on my Chthonic altar.

The other items are: a necklace that has my grandfather’s old signet ring on it, a star-shaped candle holder, a brass candle holder with star cut-outs, various crystals and rocks (mostly blue tiger’s eye, a piece of galaxite and some I found outside), a vintage black clutch purse, an agate (I think) bookend (it reminds me of the night sky with the moon) and some crow feathers that I tied to a bottle (to weigh them down, the bottle also has poppy seeds inside of it, which are associated with Hypnos and Thanatos).

Just got the most obvious sign ever- and also kinda still amazed and in shock- so- last night I had asked apollo and ares for a sign that they'd be comfy with me worshipping another/other deity(s) and I got a few signs like sun imagery and crows- very warm day today too- but the most obvious and crazy one was at the bus terminal today. I was sitting inside the terminal waiting for the bus and all the walls are clean and free of any graffiti or vandalism and written in all lowercase in black marker or something- is the name Nox- Nyx is one of the goddesses I was feeling drawn to worshipping-

Red-figure vase-painting of Nyx, Selene, Hesperus, 4th century BC.
The gods of the night - Nyx, Hesperus and Selene - are traveling across the sky. Nyx, goddess of the night, leads the procession with her arm raised. She is followed by Hesperus, god of the evening star, who is depicted as a head surrounded by the shining halo of his star. Selene, goddess of the moon, appears last, seated on a horse in a side saddle, her fluttering garment forming the shape of a crescent moon.

Hello! I'm a priestess-in-training for Nyx, and I would live to hear about your priesthood. Are there any tips or resources you can share?
hi hello!
to start off, i would like to say that Nyx was the first deity that ever called to me, very early in my practice. I’ve been practicing for roughly 13 years, and she’s been with me since the very beginning.
last year began my training. i was in a coven that had no structure, and there were a few Otherwordly threats. I was one of the ones that stood up and dug in my heels against said threats. while the coven was not originally mine, Nyx pushed me to take the High Priestess role. I was the one who had been practicing the longest, and had more experience with the threats. She had me create certain things to house a haunted doll that was buried afterward, as we had no idea what sort of spirit/entity was inhabiting it, but it was wreaking havoc on several people within the coven.
that coven dissolved due to infighting and personal issues, so I created my own coven along with another person who was the High Priest. during this time, we spent quite a few months researching and putting together a game plan. I’m not going much into detail about this one, as it dissolved as well due to toxicity from several members.
i’m certain though that my training has been over these last 13 years without a lot of my knowledge. it has honestly seemed that a lot has come naturally to me, as if she had been preparing me for a long time.
before Nyx had spoken about my becoming a High Priestess, I had an idea for a novel that i wanted to write, but i only got a few paragraphs in. the premise was a newly ordained priestess holding an initiation ritual for her coven and its new members. i won’t bore you with that, as it’s not important, but i felt as if this was a sign, premonition, what have you about my future.
As for tips and advice:
Study! I cannot say this enough. Study up on your lore, study your deity, the lineage, the religious aspects, everything that you can!
Connect with your deity. Ask what they need/want you to do. This was a big part for me. There was, at least, daily communication (if not multiple times a day) during my training to figure out the best course of action.
During your training, leave offerings daily (if possible!). This will keep you in favor of the gods, as well as help strengthen your connection.
As i said previously, I feel as if my training was over the course of 13 years. Yours might not take that long, but it will take a while. Be patient and know that the outcome will be worth the time!
Suggested Reading:
House of Night series by PC and Kristen Cast (while, yes, this is a fiction series, the goddess that they worship in the series is Nyx, and the authors did quite a bit of research when writing the series. I’ve found that a lot of it is accurate! It also really helped me connect to Nyx in the beginning)
Nyx in the House of Night edited by PC Cast (this is a collection of the research that they did, as well as academic writings in Nyx!)
I would also like to suggest reading the Iliad and The Odyssey by Homer. You don’t learn a lot to do with Nyx, but you do learn about some of her children. Alternatively, the modernizations of these, The Song of Achilles and Circe by Madeline Miller.
This link!
History Cooperative
I hope this helps! Thanks for your ask!
