“He’s here, you know.”

Neria didn’t even look up from where she was braiding elfroot, tongue poked out in concentration. “Who is?”

“Your pretty boy Templar, of course.”

That gave her pause and her finger froze on the twisted herb stems as she stared over at Anders. His feigned nonchalance confused her; she puzzled over it as she waited for him to look at her, but he kept his head bent over whatever new draft or plan he was sketching out.

In the meantime, Neria’s heart and mind caught up to what he’d said. Cullen was here, in Kirkwall, probably no more than an hour’s walk from the clinic. Did he remember her? Did he want to see her? Did he miss her, miss their chats and company? Perhaps she could—

“He’s at the Gallows.”

Reality slammed into Neria like a cold wave off the Waking Sea. It washed over her idealistic hopes and carried away the pleasant, comfortable memories she liked to reminisce. If Cullen was here, of course he was in the Gallows. Because he was a Templar, and Templars guarded the mages. And if he was here, that meant he was complicit in all that Anders was fighting against. He was complicit in Karl’s death, and so many others. All of the small, frightened faces that she and Anders ushered out through the Underground, Cullen would see imprisoned, slaughtered, Tranquil.

But—there was hope. Slowly, she resumed her braiding and, in a carefully measured voice, she asked, “Do you know if he’s with Thrask?”

Her heart sank at Anders’ answering scoff. “Don’t be ridiculous. He’s the Knight Commanders little lapdog, from everything I’ve heard and seen. You should have heard what he said to Hawke, when she barely defended her sister to him—harsher than Greagoir ever was with us, to say the least.”

Neria frowned. It didn’t seem right. She’d known Cullen, as well as a mage could know any Templar that guarded them, enough to know his name, at least. To know of his family and his fears and his wishes for the future. She could not imagine his soft face and gentle curls twisted in such cruelty, lashing out with such animosity.

“‘Mages aren’t people like you and me, Hawke’,” Anders quoted, sourly dunking his quill back into the inkpot. “‘They cannot be trusted.’”

“Maker that’s…something’s not right, then.” Neria shook her head, somewhat unable to reconcile what Anders was telling her with what she remembered. Not that she thought Anders would lie to her, but her own memory was hardly so fallible either.

Anders cocked his head. “Didn’t Solona write you?”

“What does that have to do with anything?”

He swore under his breath, pushing greasy hair out of his eyes as he shook his head. “She was supposed to write you. To tell you,” he muttered. “Of all the things to chicken out on.”

“Tell me what?”

“Well—it’s—I can’t explain as well as she could. Which is why she was supposed to tell you.”

“But you know.” Neria fastened a piece of twine around her elfroot braid and set it on the stack. She folded her arms across her chest and waited.

Anders bit his lip. “Well. You know how Uldred was when we escaped?”

“Batshit and loony?”

“Yeah. So apparently someone ticked him off at Ostagar and he made a deal with Loghain—that idiot believed the Teryn would free them if the Circle helped him take over Ferelden.”

“As if.”

“Exactly. But, so, he decided the thing to do was, once he got back from Ostagar, summon a fuck load of demons and take over the tower with blood magic.”

On instinct, Neria went very still. The scars on her forearms, long healed, blazed as though they were fresh wounds. Anders’ gaze didn’t even flick toward them, but she felt the inexplicable, undeserved guilt just the same.

But—she’d heard no news about Kinloch Hold being destroyed. No annulment, no major catastrophe. And surely the Chantry would have blared any major success far and wide as propaganda.

“So what happened?”

“Solona, of course. What else?” Anders snorted. “She showed up with her Warden treaties, as angelic as if she’d never been gone in the first place. Greagoir was already wrapped around her finger and he fell right back into that. She did right by as many as she could. Of course—“ he swallowed hard, voice and face falling, “—she didn’t get there right away. Things were already…chaotic and out of control. Not everyone made it. Either Uldred or the demons got…far too many of them.”

It was like the world had fallen out from under Neria. She couldn’t stop herself imagining her home—not quite beloved, but comfortable, familiar, all she’d known for almost two decades—strewn with the blood of those she’d loved, her comrades and companions.

How easily it could have been her, if Anders hadn’t dragged her up out of complacency.

A shudder wracked through her and she reached for more elfroot to busy her hands.

“Hey, she saved a lot of them,” Anders said softly. “More than Greagoir would have, at any rate.”

“Of course she did. That’s what Sol does. She saves people.” Neria flicked her wrist against the once-enchanted bracelet, wished she had enough talent to will it back to life. She missed her friend. “So what does this all have to do with Cullen? He was there, I assume?”

“He was unlucky, to hear Solona tell it.” Anders scowled. “I don’t wonder if he was more than unlucky, if this maliciousness was just waiting to be unlocked. It’s not as if the handful of other survivors were nearly as vicious as he was—“

“Get to the point,” Neria cut him off tersely. If this shit-talking was deserved, well, she would let him ramble on and tune him out. But she’d rather know for sure, to sate the growing anxiety in her chest.

“They found him tortured, bloody and beaten, teased by a demon for days, maybe weeks.” Anders tapped his quill on the edge of the pot, dripping the excess away. “He asked them to kill every mage there, just in case. And even after the tower was cleared and Uldred dead, he asked them the same, again. Irving was whole and well, everyone else battered but sound of mind, and he would have killed them all, just in case.”

“Why are you telling me this?” Neria whispered. These feelings coursing through her, she didn’t know them. What was she supposed to feel? Horror? Sorrow? Anger? She felt all of them at once, just in case she chose wrong. Clearly, Anders wanted her to disavow Cullen, to throw herself headlong into their work and forget whatever connection they had before. But—how could she?

“Because if I just told you that he was a twat, you wouldn’t believe me. You wouldn’t change about him. His actions speak for themselves, Ria—he’s everything we’re fighting against.”

Neria shook her head, even as Anders’ gaze hardened with anger, frustration. “No. It’s just—it’s a defense, or something. He went through trauma as well! He was so kind and open, and not just with me. It can’t all have gone away. It’s there, somewhere.”

“Does it matter?” Anders challenged. “If he’s putting mages to the brand and the blade left and write, does it matter if there’s something good underneath?”

Neria tossed another elfroot braid onto the stack. “Careful, wisp. People have said the same about mages, before.”

“Without anything to back it up! I have proof, with him.”

“And the Chantry has blood mages!” Neria cried. “You’re looking for proof, because you don’t want to think there’s anything good left in him. But what if there is? What then?”

“If the proof wasn’t there, I wouldn’t have found anything while I was looking.”

“People change,” Neria said stubbornly. “And I’m not having this debate with you, wisp. What were you trying to achieve? I’m not going near the Gallows, anyway. I’m helping with the underground, anyway. Were you just trying to make me as angry as you are?”

Anders’ eyes flashed blue and she knew she’d hit the nail on the head.

“Sorry to disappoint,” she bit out, tying the elfroot a bit too tight; the bundle snapped in half and the shreds of it fluttered to the floor around her shaking hands. “I don’t get angry. I just leave.”

She threw the remnants of the ruined braid in his direction, shoved her muddled thoughts aside, and did just that.

She left.

RAHHHH WHAT ABOUT UR OCS ?? WHAT WOUKD THEY DROP

allaros drops elfroot joints and some tools for his tinkering. you try to make sense of them but can't for most of the time because he modified them. there's also a usual supply of lyrium potions. some knives. also there are some reports you can't make sense of because they're written in an elvhen shorthand and some thousand times folded notes from bull with some nonsensical "your ass is especially hot today boss" in qunlat (he teaches his boss well!).

for garrett, there are so. many. mabari snacks. you think he'd better use this space for something useful, poisons, traps? no. there's nothing more useful than mabari snacks (esp when you need to snap your dog out of eating some shit from the ground!). also trinkets from and for kirkwall crew like a wicked grace deck, some materials for anders, a herbarium from merrill, etc.

you know this gif where a character disassembles into pixels? this is surana. they have so much shit on them. in the circle, they were used to carrying everything on them and this is with robes specifically made without pockets so there is no suspicious mage activity. now they have pockets. many pockets. they use them all. you can live a month or three on supply just from their body.

courier 6 (because they're my bebe also) drops just. human parts. ghoul parts. then you find a note on how to cook them in their pockets. it also implies you can cook their body. you leave it as soon as possible as if it's radioactive (it is, to some extent). you can also loot heavy armor and a brotherhood's hammer but you can't pry a machete from their hands.

Upon reviewing them: I really love starting out with a setting detail. I'm gonna blame Inquisition for being fucking gorgeous for that one. Also I am impressed only two start out with dialogue – so often that has been my go-to way to start a scene lol. I am most impressed with the lines that put you right into the action... I should maybe work on doing that more.

Neria tripped through the mirror, soaked to the bone and dripping all over the tile. Ixchel looked up from the bar, already smiling. The bar was much more fun with company.

“Storm Coast?”

���Crestwood,” Wringing out her hair, Neria shook the cold and wet from her skin “Maker, why don’t the mirrors ever show up when I’m in Skyhold?”

“Give it time,” Ixchel chuckled. She grabbed a towel from the stack they kept on a warming rune behind the bar and tossed it in Neria’s direction. The elf patted herself dry, then finished the job with a simple drying spell that rippled the air around her as it flared over her skin and clothes.

“Tell me we have something hot to drink.”

Ixchel nodded, reaching for two mugs as Neria settled on one of the bar stools. There was a small cauldron simmering over a low-burning fire and she ladled the rich hot chocolate out in healthy amounts for each of them.

Neria wrapped her hands around the mug and drank deeply, shivering still as the warmth sank into her bones. She hummed and a slow, pleased smile stretched across her face. “Ahhh, that’s exactly what I needed.”

“Josephine can order it from traders out of Par Vollen, if you have coin.”

“Oh, we’ll find coin for that.”

Ixchel swung herself back up onto the bar top. Her bare heels kicked idly at the wood, bumping the oil lamp so the pooling light flickered and danced around them.

“So how is Crestwood?” she asked. Neria’s nose scrunched up and she sighed into her cocoa.

“Terrible, like everywhere is these days. And…odd, in many ways. Things that didn’t add up, coincidences that were a little too convenient.” She frowned. “Of course, we were traveling with Hawke, so my focus wasn’t particularly sharp. I probably just missed the connections that would make things add up.”

Interesting. Ixchel hummed her sympathy into her drink. She could offer little more than vague support—foreknowledge was a dangerous thing, when you held the future of many worlds over in your hand. Still, her steady presence was a comfort to Neria. She cupped her mug close to her side and leaned her head against Ixchel’s thigh.

“Seeking out the Wardens, then?”

“There’s really no other way at this point. I had hoped…well, that hardly matters now.” Neria sighed. I can only assume they have a good reason for whatever’s going on—Warden business rarely makes sense from the outside looking in. We just need to find the one person who can explain the apparent insanity to us.”

After so many years, Ixchel’s straight face was well-practiced. She wore it now, carefully drumming blunt nails down the edge of her mug. Nothing she could say would make much difference. Neria was simply venting in a way she only could to another Inquisitor—to someone who had been there, to someone who understood.

Ixchel set her drink aside and slid over the back of the bar. Another basket sat beside the towels, filled with soft blankets, each wrapped around a warming stone. She unfurled one and returned to her friend, draping it over her head and tucking it snuggly about her shoulders and neck. A shiver caught Neria by surprise—a rippling chill she hadn’t felt settle over her, chased away now. She offered up a grateful smile.

Ixchel stretched up to brush her lips across where Sylaise’ brands decorated Neria’s forehead.

“You’ll figure it out,” she said. “Freezing won’t help anyone in the meantime. Another drink?”

Neria nodded, her smile turning sheepish. Their fingers brushed as she handed the empty mug over, and again as Ixchel ladled it full and passed it back.

“Ma serranas.”

Ixchel gave her a knowing look, full of gentle understanding. “Rest, lethallin. The troubles of your world will be waiting when you get back.”

9. What are your file name conventions

If I'm using Procreate then it's just "Untitled Artwork [number]" 🤣 Changing file name on Procreate is such a pain, and I often import to Photoshop/SAI for post rendering anyway. On PC it would be something like "[topic]_[recipient if any]_[brainstorm/sketch/color/rendering/final]_[number]_[transparent background or no, or any other sliiiight variation]".

Symbols. Does your OC have symbolic features? Do they like symbols? Or maybe they are the symbol.

I'm not sure for whom the question is intended, so I'm answering for multiple OCs - nothing too big brain, but more like design notes & stuffs.

Cirilla Hawke:

I tend to draw her hair fluffy like a big black cloud, a light play on the "head in the clouds" saying, as she tends to daydream and get lost in her own thoughts when she doesn't have to worry about survival (also it floats so prettily).

The golden earring she wears on her left ear is supposed to be a token from her runaway past (before the Blight), when she left the house to be an apostate on her own.

She also wears the Amell family crest on her belt, it's to warn off random strangers from fucking with her on the streets, but also a nod toward her dedication to her family.

The blood swipe - she only puts it on after her first kill (as a general gesture for "I'm about to fuck shit up so bad"), but otherwise doesn't wear it. So if you see her with the swipe, it's because she drew blood that day.

Naril Brosca

She always wears a scarf outside of her armor and on the field - can be multiple colors, multiple styles. The first one she ever got was from her sister before she left for the Wardens - she ruined it so quickly due to how much she wore it. Rica gifted her a bunch of new ones during the Orzammar arc, with a reassurance that she will always get her a new scarf as soon as the old one wears out. It is a symbol of love never running out.

Neria Surana

The brooch she wears on her formal cape is a symbol of the Circle engulfed in flames. Mostly a petty reminder of the failed promise to dissolve the Ferelden Circle. Pisses Irving & Wynne off whenever they meet again, which is an interesting change because she was their prized pupil, once.

Vy Hawke

She wears little flowers on her head (stolen from the viscount's garden), as a token of her friendship with Merrill. Also everything about her is clean and neat and well-organized, to the best of her capacity.

Ellana & Edra Lavellan (the twinnies)

I gave them opposing palettes, mostly to match their personalities, but honestly now that I've went through multiple playthroughs with them I think they both have the same major traits that are just manifested differently. Still, ya, red & pink for Edra, blue & grey for Ellana. Ellana also wears halla ear pieces, to signify that she's First of the Clan.
