Moving with Your Pet: Top Tips
Tumblr media
Relocating is a challenging experience. Leaving behind the familiarity and memories associated with a place is tough, let alone the actual logistics of shifting your belongings from an old location to a new one. Such a move becomes especially stressful if one has a pet with us; while we humans can understand a sudden change in location, a pet lacks the logical reasoning required to do so. As your pet may experience stress due to the move, it makes sense to prepare accordingly. Here is how you can do this.
Advance Planning
Relocating with a pet includes a few more steps, compared to you moving on your own. The process of pet relocation has been described as cumbersome, so it is best to plan in advance. Any shortcuts during the preparation process can present themselves as problems at the date of departure, so don’t cut any corners. Make sure to book your tickets well in advance, schedule your vet appointment early, and make sure your pet’s vaccination records are up to date. Most of these health records serve as your pet’s documentation in place of an actual passport, so take meticulous care and complete them appropriately, like you would your own.
Crate Size & Measurement
The available modes of transportation when shifting locations are via roadways, railways, or airways. Regardless of what model you end up choosing, your pet will have to be inside a crate for their own safety. Your pet can only fly in an IATA-approved fiber crate, and if travelling via road, it is necessary to ensure their safety as well. To make the acclimation process easier, crate-train your pet before setting out on any long journeys. Give love and treats for positive interaction with the crate, and embark on smaller journeys with them while they are in the crate, so they become accustomed to the new environment. Add four inches of headroom on top of your pet's measured height to allow ventilation.
Vet Visit
A vet visit is crucial before any travelling. First, it ensures that your pet is healthy and the flight will be a safe one. Any risk or injury is only magnified during a high-stress situation for an animal, such as moving locations, so it is important to minimize such a risk and get a health checkup prior to any movement. Second, it is necessary to do so for documentation purposes. If you’re moving via airways, then your pet will need a fit-to-fly certificate to be allowed onto a plane, as well as their completed vaccination record stamped. These are only done by a vet, so ensure to get these done in advance. Even if you are not moving via air, it is prudent to get a checkup done.
Pet Relocator & Pet Friendly Airline
Most relocations are across longer distances, often on a plane. In such a case, to maintain the safety and comfort of your pet, it is important to select an airline which has a temperature and pressure-controlled cargo bay. These can be guaranteed by a pet-friendly airline with a good record of transporting pets. If you’re unsure about your airline, you can always hire an expert or a relocator to confirm whether your selected airline has a good track record of transporting pets safely, or if you should make alternative arrangements.
Pet Identification
Your pet needs identification while travelling, just like you. A pet microchip is the only form of identification a pet can have, and is essential while travelling to ensure safety. A microchip is tiny, the size of a grain of rice, and is implanted painlessly on your pet’s body. This microchip can then be used as    identification, for pet export movements, at the vet, at a pet boarding, and so on. The ISO 11784/11785 microchips are standardized and used for pets globally, being necessary for pet export movements.

Train Your Pet Against Separation Anxiety
Tumblr media
Pets are very sensitive to their environment. They become accustomed to and comfortable in a setting, so it is understandable that a change in environment would prove to be disorientating. When a familiar setting is changed, your pet may feel anxious. This adjustment period is when separation anxiety can rear its head.
As a pet parent, it is important to recognize the signs of anxiety and know how to deal with them. Pets are like babies, so it is crucial to take things slow when trying to get them to be comfortable in a new home. Remember, they will become used to a new environment at their own pace, so it is best to keep them comfortable while they do so. Here’s how you can do that.
Getting Them Used to Their Habitat
In the absence of recognizable sights and smells, your pet might feel detached from the scene. To make them more familiar, do what you would do. If you move to a new place, whether it is through pet travel export or pet transportation import, or a domestic pet relocation, you spend time exploring the sights to help establish some familiarity with your immediate vicinity. The same goes for your pet; encourage your pet to explore their new home, be by their side when they do so as well. Remember that your pet is a baby, and is as new to this setting as you are. Developing a sense of familiarity is not an overnight process.
First time Apart
You’ll eventually have to leave your house to go outside, and by extension, your pet. Having the only recognizable human disappear for hours and hours does not sound good for them, and this induces separation anxiety. The key to resolving this situation is to take baby steps. Starting with shorter durations and consistently coming back will help develop a sense of security and an    understanding that you’ll be gone for a while and back at the same time every day. Start by leaving them alone in a room for a while, and reward them for it. Slowly increase the duration until your pet is as comfortable in this setting as they were in their old one.
Attention and Affection
The initial period is when your pet is at their most vulnerable. it is our responsibility as pet parents to give them all the love they need while coping. Play with them, take them for a walk, or just do what your pet loved doing in their previous home. Keep toys handy as well, some treats should help soften the process as well.
All They Need is Love
Pets can’t see things with logic or reason like humans can; they’re animals after all. It is imperative to remain patient, understanding and loving, even if they are not in the happiest of moods. All they need is your understanding, and they will be lounging in their new home in no time.

Everything You Need to Know About Traveling With Your Pet
Tumblr media
Excited by the thought of travelling with your pet? Decided against it because of the long process? You’re not alone. Your pet is your baby, and their safety and comfort during any such process is paramount. The terms and conditions to be met before transporting a pet can be arduous. While they can look overwhelming, with a little bit of planning, they can be made into a hassle-free process. Here’s some tips on how to do the same:
Plan Wisely: the better your planning, the lesser the chance of something going wrong. Ensue you plan well in advance to any movement with your pet; book your flights in advance, ensure their vaccinations are in order, make sure your pet is healthy and injury-free, and consult your vet before you embark on any journey with your pet.
Get a Health Checkup: consulting a vet is important before flying anywhere. Any injury or health issue you ignore can become a nuisance further down the line, closer to the departure date. Your vet will also have fill and sign a fit-to-fly certificate, so make sure you schedule your visit and check-up judiciously.
Get Your Tags/Identification: The ultimate nightmare a pet owner has during transit is their pet being misplaced or exchanged with another pet. Therefore, it is crucial to have identification on your pet. A collar is a good start, but a pet microchip is the only proof of identification a pet has. Ensure your pet is microchipped before their travel, as this will make them identifiable in case of any unfortunate mix-ups.
Check regulations: different countries have different requirements for pet travel. If you’re travelling domestically, it is no problem, but if you’re travelling overseas, there may be more preparation required depending on which country you’re headed towards. Check the import requirements, ensure all government requirements are fulfilled, and that any import formalities are taken care of well in advance
Pick a Pet-Friendly Airline: Finding a pet-friendly is essential for the safety of a pet. The aircraft should have pressure and temperature-controlled cargo bays, which is not available in every airline. If you are not sure of the process, you can hire a pet relocator. They will help to take down the burden and headache of the paperwork formalities for a fee.
