Summary: What if John Smith never left for England? What if he stayed behind with Pocahontas and her tribe?

Pairing: Pocahontas x John Smith

Chapter One

It had taken weeks for him to recover. After being shot by Ratcliffe John had decided to stay with Pocahontas and her tribe. Convinced by her that their medicines would work in healing him. His recovery had been slow but sure enough, whatever ointments and plant dressings they had been using for him had worked.

The first week he had lain up in a hut they had built for him, put on strict bedrest with only Pocahontas as a companion. The time they had spent together, had brought them closer, she had taught him their ways, shown him kindness, compassion, love. Her father didn’t agree, it was obvious of his disdain for their relationship. Her best friend, Nakoma, she had visited a few times, with Pocahontas, made some small talk but he heard them arguing outside of his hut at night, about their people, Kocoum, his treatment.  

He was an outcast in their tribe, his recovery was coming to an end, his was moving a lot easier, walking, and lifting without pain. He would show them that he could integrate with them, helping where he can, be a real match for Pocahontas, prove to her father, the chief that he would make a good heir.

Pocahontas had wanted him to recover longer, saying Grandmother Willow had said he wasn’t ready, but he would show them, the men of the tribe would go fishing tomorrow and he would go with them, to show them he could be with them as a whole.

Disney Prince x Princess Couples SWAP!!!

FYI: I'm ONLY counting official Princess couples, which ends with Anna being the last one with a canon love interest. So, there's no Merida, Elsa, Moana, or Raya. The goal for this was to have Prince x Princess crossover pairings ONLY.

Snow White x Eugene

Rapunzel is basically Modern-Day Snow White, and they have very similar Pure Hearts, the kind that can break down Eugene's walls. Snow White knows how to be firm when necessary, but her greatest strength is her unfailing kindness. Eugene would definitely reveal his deepest desires after sharing a cup of tea with Snow.

Cinderella x Adam (the Beast)

Picture this: Cinderella chooses to stay at the Beast's castle in exchange for her family (be it her dad, who is alive some versions of the fairytale, or her step-family, because she IS selfless enough to try to help them). She no longer has to work as a slave (though knowing her, she'd still damn well would try to help out), and she would assimilate easily into an Enchanted Castle's environment, and her gentleness and kindness, with juuuuust a bit more of a feisty backbone to confront the Beast's temper, would unravel the Beast's tangled heart.

Aurora x Eric

There are two things Phillip and Eric have in common: they both slayed the villain in an incredibly badass fashion, and they both are smitten with a mysterious voice. Eric is 1000% an homage to Prince Phillip's character, and you cannot tell me that he wouldn't fall head over heels in love with Mary Costa "Briar Rose's" gorgeous voice. (And let's be real, Aurora definitely has a Type lol)

Ariel x John Smith

Ariel wants to see the human world. John Smith wants to explore the "New World." You do the math. Okay, in all honesty, this is lowkey my least favorite pairing 😭 but when you take away the Awkward Historical Stuff, they do still??? kinda fit???? It's one thing for Ariel to go ashore the nearest human kingdom; it's another for her to actually EXPLORE the planet, with an equal adventurer by her side. (Originally, I paired her with Aladdin, but I found an equal, if not better partner for him below ^^")

Belle x Phillip

Here's a "Prince Charming" who takes names and kicks ass and would provide the adventure Belle wants so dearly. Also, I just want good things for Belle, so really, who wouldn't want Prince Slay-a-Dragon-Get-the-Girl Phillip???

Jasmine x Shang

Anna x Naveen

Look, Naveen has actual Game, and is NOT sinister like Hans, so he would EASILY sweep Anna off her feet, in the best way possible. But he wouldn't jump to marriage, and Elsa's Ice Queen presence would prevent him from, ah, moving things too fast lol ^^" Naveen, at the end of the day, is a supporter, not a leader, and that gives room for Anna to take the reins.

It's hard for me to take the "Zutara is a colonizer x colonized ship" argument seriously when:

1) People often forget that many Zutara shippers are from/descended from colonized countries

2) It isn't comparable to Pocahontas and John Smith or Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemingway since Zuko learned about the errors of his nation and tried to redeem himself after being an agent of colonization. Little to no colonizers in history did that

3) The same people who make these arguments either ship or are neutral to Zukka, Jinko, Songko, Zuki, etc.

4) Never analyze how surface-level the show and its spin-offs' critique of colonialism is. I never hear people who make this talk about how problematic the concept of Republic City since it was based on centering the feelings of Fire Nation settlers who were put in the Fire Nation colonies to displace indigenous Earth Kingdom citizens and the only person to critique this concept post-ATLA is a literal fascist. Or how it demonizes armed struggle and feeds into this idea that oppressed can only liberate themselves if they kindly ask their oppressors to stop oppressing them through the episode "Jet". Or how Hama, a victim of ethnocide, is villainized for wanting to get revenge on her oppressors; not saying her actions were justified but the show's could've been more sympathetic.

And I say all this as someone of West African heritage and isn't a hardcore Zutara shipper. It's gross to use real-life events to "win" a ship war, especially when the characters are from a show that has a bare bone critique of these events.

Chapter Two

John stood at the door of the small hut he had grown so accustomed to. Today was the day he would show the village his worth.

‘You are not ready.’ Pocahontas sat on the ground behind him, knees bent underneath her as she plaited her long dark hair. Meeko and Percy were chasing each other in circles with Flit fluttering around John’s blonde hair, which has now grown to his shoulder blades.

‘Because Grandmother Willow says so, I presume.’ He laughed as he spoke, noticing the serious look he got back from his girlfriend.

‘Alright, alright. I’ll take it easy.’ He laughed, brushing out his pelted trousers. It had taken him some time to grow accustomed to their clothing. He felt very open to the elements, with no shoes and his chest bare.

Part of their culture was paint, like tattoos the men of the village wore markings on their chest which would be given to them by the village shaman. Marks of strength, bravery, smarts, these would all be bestowed on them. It was the ultimate goal for any man in the village to have a mark bestowed on them.

He could remember, Kocoum, has been given the mark of the bear, for strength. The ultimate marking any man in the village could want. He had spoken to the village shaman in depth about these markings, he had laughed when he had claimed he would be the next to bestow these markings. Though he supported him. Kekata had been the one to treat his injuries all this time, he was a lifelong friend to Pocahontas’s father, Chief Powhatan.  

Pocahontas stood next to him now, brushing his blonde hair from his face she planted a kiss on his cheek.

‘I made you something.’ She flashed him a coy smile before collecting something from behind their straw bed. A fishing spears.

‘Grandmother Willow told me you would go against her advice. So, I made this for you.’ She passed him the spear; he held it with both hands as he examined it.

She could see his confidence dropping as he examined the spear in his hands. ‘This isn’t quite what I’m used to, I don’t suppose you have any rods and bait around here?’ He laughed nervously.

Pocahontas cocked her head to the side, ‘any what?’

‘Don’t worry, maybe I can show you, the village may benefit from it!’ He smiled at her, earning a cautious look in response.

‘Maybe you should start with the spear, I don’t think my father would like you trying to change our customs John.’ She placed her hand on his bare chest. He chuckled nervously.

‘Good luck.’ She gave him a grin as she disappeared out of the hut, animals in tow.

John examined the spear in his hands. ‘Yeah, I’m going to need it…’
