Rykard had the forget tonic on hand for tanith when he went silly mode. Do you think he got it from perfumers, from carian preceptors, was it inquisition inventory as a wellness tool, or something else

I’ve always wondered this! I think my best guess as to where it came from would be the perfumers… before the shattering, they were apothecaries and healers, and in a way, the tonic of forgetfulness can be seen as a balm for the mind. However, if this tonic came from a perfumer, it would have had to be before Rykard’s treason — the perfumers are proud of their Erdtree loyalty and wear that symbol on their aprons! In this case, perhaps it could have been a tool for inquisitors to forget the horrific sights of torture and the screams of their victims??

There’s another option, though… it could have also come from a depraved perfumer. These guys are said to be “heresy-inclined” — “The embroidery on the apron is itself a curse upon the Erdtree.” Their aprons are decorated with serpents, seen as traitors to the Erdtree. Depraved perfumers are also said to “imbibe their own spices to alter body and mind,” and you could definitely say that the tonic of forgetfulness alters the mind… even though I said earlier that it could be seen as a balm to the mind, I also think there’s something kinda nefarious about wiping your memory (or rather, someone else’s… looking at you, Tanith) in order to banish distress. So given the whole heresy and serpents thing, it seems like depraved perfumers would be likely to hang around Rykard... and as a matter of fact, they did! We can find Depraved Perfumer Carmaan’s spirit ashes in a Volcano Manor room. Carmaan could’ve made the tonic, but his description also says that “depraved perfumers practice their art for themselves alone” so it doesn’t seem likely that he or another would’ve made the tonic on Rykard’s behalf. Unless he killed Carmaan and stole it off his corpse and that’s why his ashes are stuffed in a guest room

Darriwil was a Good Boy

So I read a fic that got me thinking along these lines, and I have a theory/headcanon to present. This is almost entirely based of off deductive reasoning and circumstantial evidence, but I feel like it makes a few things fall into place.

So. Bloodhound Knight Darriwil. The Forlorn Hound.

We know nothing about this guy aside from the fact that he is a Bloodhound Knight and Blaidd considers him a traitor. We know basically nothing about Bloodhound Knights aside from the fact that they can't speak and they can't betray their chosen lord.

This allows us to infer a thing or two. Not much, but enough to go off of. Bloodhound Knights are sworn to their chosen master for life. Since Blaidd refers to him as a traitor (rather than simply an enemy or a target), it seems safe to assume that Darriwil was sworn either to Ranni or to the House of Caria.

If that's the case... Shouldn't he be incapable of betraying Ranni? Isn't that the one thing we know Bloodhound Knights can't/don't do?

So here's my theory -- what if Darriwil was the first one to start picking up bad vibes from Seluvis?

In-game, we learn that Seluvis is worse than useless at his official job (reading the stars). He has to outsource that to Sellen. What is he actually good at? Puppetry magic.

I'm far from the first person to suggest this, but it seems like Ranni only keeps Seluvis around because he can keep her doll vessel functioning. Via Seluvis' questline, we learn that Ranni knows what he's about and does not trust him in the slightest.

Proposal:

Darriwil functions as Ranni's bodyguard when Blaidd is away. At some point Seluvis starts making serious inroads into obtaining the ingredients to his roofie-potion. Seluvis thinks he's being slick, but Darriwil can practically smell the bad intentions radiating off him.

Darriwil does what any loyal hound would do and attempts to cut Seluvis into many small pieces. Either Ranni or Iji intervenes to save him. Now Ranni is in a tough spot -- she needs Seluvis. She can't risk Darriwil killing him. She also can't let on to Seluvis that she knows what he's up to.

So Ranni pretends to trust Seluvis over Darriwil. She declares Darriwil a traitor and locks him in an evergaol -- officially as punishment, but actually to keep him safely out of the way until Seluvis outlives his usefulness.

Unfortunately, during Blaidd's next spectral Skype call Seluvis blabs the whole thing. Blaidd's protective instincts kick in full force. In the moment it doesn't matter that Seluvis was the one who was attacked, all Blaidd hears is that the man he'd been trusting to guard Ranni suddenly turned traitor and flew into a violent rage.

So of course Blaidd tracks Darriwil down and confronts him, without first consulting Ranni. What's the only other thing we know about Bloodhound Knights? They're mute. Darriwil never had a chance to explain himself.

This would explain a few things.

It would explain why Ranni was in Limgrave to encounter the Tarnished.

It would explain why even though Darriwil was presumably locked up for his treachery, Blaidd doesn't know where to find him. (Also explains why he wasn't killed outright instead of being jailed and then killed)

It also lines up with Kale's opinion of Blaidd's intelligence. For all that Kale insists he's a bit of a bonehead, we don't really see Blaidd do anything to warrant that opinion. If the Darriwil theory is true... Then yeah, Blaidd screwed up.

The entire Darriwil side-quest seems so... Context-less, for lack of a better word. We never get any in-game hints as to who he was, how he betrayed team Ranni, why Blaidd was hunting him, anything. I haven't even seen any theories. So I suppose this is as good an explanation as any.

Concerning Seluvis (and Pidia)

Ok, I completely understand where the ‘Pidia is the puppet master’ theory came from (Vaati, alternate interpretations of lore etc.). However, all the evidence in favor of that is circumstantial, AND can be countered.

1. We already know that puppets can be given (or loaned) to someone who isn’t the original creator. After all, the player can get a few.

2. The Raya Lucaria soldier puppets are being used to guard the rooftops of Caria Manor. Pidia is a servant of Caria Manor, and looks to be the only sane Albinauric sorcerer left. It makes sense for him to tasked to use the puppets to protect the Manor.

3. This also explains why he says ‘You!’ when you first come down the ladder; he saw you on the rooftops.

4. There’s no law that there can’t be two perverted dolly-botherers. And Pidia is absolutely a perverted dolly-botherer.

5. You can hear the soldier puppets kill him after you find Seluvis’ body. If we’re talking ‘real’ puppet master, that’s an interesting coincidence.

6. Yes, he has the map to the amber starlight shard. However, he runs a storeroom. It makes sense that there’d be old, forgotten things in there.

7. From a meta perspective, you, the player, are just browsing the shelves when you buy stuff from Pidia.

8. Gideon has beef with Seluvis. It’s clearly mutual. Seluvis chose Nepheli, Gideon’s adopted daughter, as his target for the puppetizing potion. Why would Pidia, an Albinauric sorcerer with no apparent connection to the Roundtable Hold, order something like that?

9. Puppetry is specifically called out as a Night Sorcery/Nox thing. Carians in general are connected to the night, and the stars. Seluvis was one of Ranni’s father’s Preceptors, and a master sorceror. Seluvis’ bell bearing indicates a clear visual connection to Carian and/or Night sorcery....and that’s an entirely different post, stay tuned.

11. We’ve seen a non-summoned remote-controlled puppet in action: Finger Maiden Therolina. She shows up at the Radahn festival, and is utterly silent. She bows and...that’s it. You can buy her from Seluvis, too, or get her as a free puppet. And you see her in his chambers, so, yeah, she’s a puppet. And Seluvis himself has an awful lot of personality for a remote-controlled doll, doesn’t he? So...I speculate that he isn’t.

12. The biggest one IMHO is that Ranni knows that Seluvis puts you up to giving her the amber starlight draught. Either she is...spectacularly stupid, or Seluvis is the puppetmaster. And she knows it.

And, finally...Seluvis’ puppet body...This is a stretch, sure, but there are a few explanations:

13. We already know that sorcerers can body-surf. Sellen does it, using a body that Seluvis made. Jerren himself says, when he finds her ‘dead,’ that she’s doubtlessly got another body stashed somewhere. We help her upload her consciousness with that primal glintstone.

14. The merchant note on ‘the Preceptor’s Secret’ claims that Sellen visits (of visited) him quite frequently. Circumstantial, but it is not out of the question that they were both in on her backup plan. Why wouldn’t he have a backup plan?

15. ...He was totally being a pervy dolly-botherer with her new, empty body though.

16. So one explanation is that he somehow ditched his body for another. Or shut it down for future use. But we’ll never get that proven one way or another.

17. Another explanation is that Ranni made him drink one of his potions. He gets puppetized after you give her the fingerslayer blade....so he’s outlived his usefulness to her. And since she absolutely did know what he was up to, maybe she thought it was time for some justice?

Anyway...This is also all circumstantial. We’ll likely never get a confirmation of any of this. I think you can run with either theory...Fanfic fuel either way!
