Summary of plush toys making
First of all, I would like to say that in Japan, making plush toys of anime and video game characters is a trend, but it is also criticised by many. There are also many people in Japan who say that it is an infringement of copyright and that it is unacceptable to make plush toys like this for personal use. (Of course, selling these plush toys is a complete taboo in Japan.) Therefore, I would like to declare at the outset that the following instructions for making plush toys are not for the Sebastian or Ominis plush toys, but for the mc plush toys 🤣
Firstly, the full body shape of the plush toy. I used a plushie paper pattern I bought at a handicraft shop, but a Japanese person published a free pattern on Twitter, so I think you can use this to make a human-shaped plushie in the same way! There is also a video by this author in Japanese.
youtube
About face embroidery I made a plush toy in the recently trendy style of attaching and sewing forelock fabric to the face, and this YouTube video was very helpful! The video is in Japanese, but with English subtitles, so it is easy for English speakers to understand.
youtube
About clothes All patterns were based on free publicly available patterns, except the skirt of the female MC Robe(https://booth.pm/ja/items/4991157) Jacket (https://atelier-snow.booth.pm/items/5192559) Shirts (https://booth.pm/ja/items/5233265) Trousers (https://atelier-snow.booth.pm/items/5233130) Waistcoats (https://booth.pm/ja/items/5282282) The authors of the above patterns also publish skirt patterns free of charge.
About Other. The pattern on the jacket and trousers was hand-drawn with a white pen. The tie and dormitory emblem were computer-drawn illustrations printed on postcard-sized printable cloth
Tumblr media
Extra Various designs You can change the placement, change the size of the parts, and change anything else you like 🙌 You can add and use whatever you like to make the face you want to make. (Please don't use these designs to make products and sell them on Esty etc.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am incredibly bad at sewing, but I managed to make a plush toy. I'm sure there are definitely many people in HL fandom who are better and more dexterous at sewing than me, so I'd love to see other people's creations and share this post and desain 🙌💓 (And if you're good at sewing or handcrafting, please do give me a sneaky tip on how to recreate Sebastian's or Ominis's hair…🤣)

So I put these pictures up on my main blog and it - to my surprise - got a massive amount of attention.
Well, massive in my opinion.
So I decided to start putting stuff on a different blog, and the first step is put the images on this one.
So here are the nearly-complete wings, before I was able to sew it all together.
Tumblr media
It is about 6 1/2 feet - and because I'm American, I need to add a silly way to measure that. So it is about the same wingspan of your average bald eagle.
For my metric friends, that's almost 2 meters or 198 cm.
I worked on it for three months. That might sound pretty fast, but I've been out of work since last May (a year tomorrow) after developing a (hopefully) temporary digestive disorder that eventually required a feeding tube to avoid the whole 'starving to death' thing.
So I've had nothing but time.
Here are some pictures of the final result.
Tumblr media
I think I'm going to add some shoulder straps to keep it up a little easier and to better distribute the weight. It's about 3lbs (about 1 kilo and some change). That doesn't sound heavy, but carrying it around all day on top of being medically fragile got really hard, so I think that will help.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's a close-up of the gloves I added. I also used a plastic clothes hanger to add a handle so that I can actually have the wings completely spread (I'm tiny, so my arms have no chance otherwise)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I might outline the interior of the shawl but I haven't decided yet.
I'm really glad you guys liked it.
I didn't make the pattern, but if you would like to purchase it from the one who did, here's the link!

So, one of my weirder current sidequests is making the Magic Carpet from Aladdin, because there isn't one for sale in existence anywhere.
I printed the pattern onto printable cotton, and sewed the two pieces together with the tassels on the inside, like a bog standard cushion cover. I then sewed pipe cleaners around the edge because since Carpet is sentient, he should at least be vaguely posable. So now my dilemma is:
Do I use embroidery thread to cover up the pipe cleaners, or sandwich the pipe cleaners in between folded gold ribbon and sew it down?

hey! fellow aussie here and I just discovered your blog while looking for vintage patterns and was wondering if you were uploading the sewing patterns or just compiling the pattern envelopes in the google drive?
Short answer: yes, some of them, eventually.
Longer answer: digitizing patterns without any proper equipment requires a little bit more space than I have right now to do it efficiently. I don't have access to the kinds of tools that would traditionally be used for this kind of thing, so instead I do it by photographing the patterns sandwiched between a clear sheet with a five centimeter/2 inch grid overlaid, that I use to correct the distortion of the photos in Photoshop. From that point it can either be copied by hand onto drafting paper using the squares, or if it's something particularly cool, I can trace the outlines in illustrator to make basically one big printable PDF.
But to do this I need space for a very big piece of either clear acrylic, or some other kind of semi-rigid plastic that can have the grid on it, as well as a support material to keep it flat, and most importantly, somewhere to prop it up where I can take a photo of it straight-on and from a sufficient distance away that there's not too much lens distortion or light glare from the plastic. Unfortunately, right now my very small city apartment isn't really configured for it, and I'm using basically a big-ish piece of cardboard and a thin sheet of plastic with tape lines, so the images take a prohibitively long time to make usable.
I've bookmarked the big sheets of acrylic I want to buy to make the process easier, but I don't really have the space for them just now.

Learning to sew with 18 inch doll clothes pattern Simplicity 4654 #Sewing #DollClothesPatterns
Visit ChellyWood.com for free printable sewing patterns for making doll clothes to fit dolls of many shapes and all different sizes. When I first uploaded this photo, it was part of a series that answered the question, “How can you tell when a pattern is not for beginners?” People often think that sewing for a bigger doll will be easier than sewing for a smaller doll, but that’s not always true.…

Free Space Project for Terror Bingo is done!
While I might add to it in the future (such as a sculpted foam head with the help of my friend who's done fur suits before, and/or more articulated toes) I'm calling it complete. If I kept working on it right now, the amount of white fuzz it sheds would drive me insane.
Behold! My Tuunbaq inspired rug. I drew inspiration from these two patterns for faux bearskin rugs, and I scaled up the printable pattern. Then there was a LOT of cutting and taping the paper pieces of the pattern together until I actually had the shape right. It took probably four or five hours total to get the pattern made and the pieces cut. For materials I just used a canvas drop cloth from Home Depot, a double sided king sized faux fur and sherpa throw blanket, and heavy duty upholstery thread to put it together (plus some black embroidery floss). I did alter the pattern as I was cutting things out, opting for longer legs than the original pattern and no tail to better reflect Tuunbaq's shape.
The double sided blanket meant I had two options for fur texture and at the suggestion of @shloodles I ultimately went with the faux fur. I have worked with faux fur and minky before, my beloathed, and the white fuzz was EVERYWHERE. But that carpeting was already going to be ripped out so I didn't stress too much on clean up lol.
The extra fabric from the blanket also meant I could add density to the rug without using batting or polyfill, I just had the sherpa positioned to be an inside layer. It only took me a few days to get it all sewed up and I left the shoulders and neck area open to turn it. Then to close the shoulders and neck, I decided to use black embroidery floss in a really visible overlapping stitch. I wanted it to read as the work of someone who's maybe not done a lot of this sort of work and at the very least doesn't have access to the most fitting materials to create it.
And now I have a large rug that will be a bitch to keep clean with my big baby dog ಥ‿ಥ But I do love it, I think it fits really well with my space and general aesthetic. The Kleenex box and 42" dog crate are for scale.

I started making a new thing on Friday- an apron dress from an independent company called "The Assembly Line"
Tumblr media
It was a printable pattern that I bought because WAITING is hard when I have the energy to do something RIGHT NOW. Waiting results in energy atrophy I've found.
It looks like this:
Tumblr media
and it's made up of like 6 parts. I was able to cut the pattern and half finish the dress in about 4 hours, which is probably a long time for more experienced / faster sewers, but for me that was like....super quick. It only requires 2 snaps or buttons, fabric and iron on interfacing, so it's 100% a good starter pattern.
I'm making it out of this check fabric:
Tumblr media
and it only takes 2 yards cutting on the LARGE size.
Now, I do have 2 yards of my Mood fabric, but I wanted to do a test first because I might not loooove this dress, but so far I'm super impressed. Also! I often find offcuts of fabric in my local fabric shop that are like, 1.5 yards and there WAS room to spare, so if you were to do the facings in another fabric, or contrasting pockets, you could easily put this together for super, super cheap. This fabric was in that bin, and it's 2 yards, and it was £6. It's not super super thick, but it has a stiffer, heavy feel with a crisp drape.
Tumblr media
BUT!
I'm most impressed with the directions. I'm used to the big 4 patterns where the directions are assuming you know things. They'll have things like "insert the zipper" as step 7 and if you've never added a zipper, thats... not an easy thing.
These instructions are so clear, with line drawings explaining. Hell, it ever showed different options for top stitching and under-stitching which I've never seen explained, showed how to correctly iron on your interfacing, explained HOW to finish your inside seams with images and giving 2 options (overlocking or zigzagging). The pattern itself has the cutting AND sewing marks, shows how to transfer them over to your fabric... it even showed how to do tailor tacks (which I've been doing wrong!) and explained WHY each step was being carried out.
I swear, I may never buy another big 4 pattern again. If you want to start sewing, and you are nervous, I'd HIGHLY suggest this pattern. AND this isn't even the VERY EASY pattern. This is classed as 'EASY' and they also have two free patterns (for a pj set and a leather/ette bag)
It's pretty size inclusive - with most patterns hitting a sweet spot between XS and 2XL. It's not perfect, of course, but better than the big 4 most times.
Tumblr media
BUT! I really do think this is a killer pattern and if you have a BASIC machine - you only need a straight and zigzag stitch, and if you use snaps you don't need buttonholes - and want to try something you can wear.... I think this might be for you!
But.... yeah, this is just a long post about how I think people should try sewing and how this might be the best way to start.
For me, the total cost of this apron dress, once finished, was:
2 buttons - stashed. I cut buttons off of all my clothes I throw away, and also pull off the zippers. Over the years it results in quite a collection, but charity shops also sell buttons. Just ask!
Iron On Interfacing - stashed. However, I know it's about £2 a yard. I didn't need 2 yards, but it's handy to have, so if you are buying it, get a yard! it's so useful, and most patterns require it at some point.
Fabric: 1.8 yards for Large. 1.5 for XS. I'd suggest going for a thicker fabric for this, which is more expensive. HOWEVER, I'm also a HUGE proponent of using what you can get, and I actually think the fabric I'm using is for curtains! If you see a nice pair of curtains in a thrift of charity shop, you can use them and end up with TWO dresses if you are careful with placement when cutting out! I spent £6 on this fabric, about 4 years ago. The only reason I remember the cost is that its written on the selvage in pen.
Pattern: I paid £17.00 for a PDF download, which included home printer A4 and US letter paper, store print, and instructions. I reuse my patterns a LOT, but of course, once you have it bought, you could just re-print it if you wanted to. I just like to feel thrifty.
Thread: I'm using cheap white thread on the spool and bobbin, I got in a multipack with other colours. I think it works out at like 50p a spool. Good quality Gutermann threads about about £2.50 for 250 yards, which is waaaay more than you'll need, so you can reuse it.
total: £23.50 for an apron dress.
Tumblr media
I honestly think this pattern has a look of something you'd see with a much higher price tag BECAUSE it looks so simple. Like I can see GAP selling this for like £50 easy, just because it has a very... basic, staple, eco-friendly look about it. Like in a plain canvas, or denim? so basic but an easy staple you'd spend more on cause you know it'll get worn a lot.
As for time? I think it took me about 8 hours to make in total.

Progress Report #5 (Program Survey!!!)
Tumblr media
Save the dates:
KiScon 2022 (entirely online): 4-6 November
Deadline for program booklet submissions: 1 October Deadline for goodie bag submissions: 1 October Deadline for art show / auction submissions: 1 October Deadline for vidshow submissions: 10 October Deadline for cake contest submissions: 1 November
Upcoming KiScord Pub Nights: 17 September, 3 p.m. EDT 1 October, 5 p.m. EDT 15 October, 3 p.m. EDT 29 October, 5 p.m. EDT
Dear K/S friends,
Greetings! We hope you've had a great summer, and we especially hope you are well and unharmed by a certain pesky virus. (It made the rounds in the concom, unfortunately, which is also why there was no newsletter in August.)
And now it's September, pumpkin spice is in and on everything, and we are back with our newsletter/progress report. The countdown on the KiScon website informs us that the con is in fewer than 60 days, and it's high time to address a few important points.
1. Upcoming deadlines:
The zine deadline is now in the past, but there are so many other deadlines in the very near future!
a. Program booklet:
If you have a dealer membership and want us to include information on your fannish business (including links to your Etsy, Bigcartel, website, etc.) in the program booklet ("con book"), please get in touch asap! We offer you this advertising space as part of your membership, but we require your input for this no later than 1 October!
The same deadline applies for anything you want us to include in the con book, e.g. announcements of fic fests, fannish events, zine projects, promoting of fannish spaces and communities. Please send your submissions to larissa @ kiscon . org!
b. Goodie bag: Let's fill the digital goodie bag for our attendees! We've already talked about this in the 2nd progress report, but here's the gist: Anything that can be downloaded and shared digitally is fair game as long as it has a creative or transformative element (which simply means: no episode or movie files, no unaltered stills or publicity photos)! Here are some suggestions to get those creative juices flowing:
Want to make a podfic or filk or mixtape/playlist for the con bag? Have some cool Trek-themed crochet or sewing patterns that you would like to share? An awesome desktop or phone wallpaper or digital stickers/badges/icons that members can then use on their social media? Maybe a cool recipe for K/S cookies or a lovely manip? A link to your amazing Star Trek picrew maker? Colouring pages or printable paper dolls? Send your goodies to larissa @ kiscon . org until 1 October, please.
c. Art show / auction: We talked at length about this in the last newsletter; please see the details there. Again, 1 October is the deadline, and the relevant contact email (both for submissions and any and all questions) is: artshow @ kiscon . org. d. Vidshow: Send us your creations, lovely vidders! Deadline for vid submission (preferably by Dropbox or similar download link): 10 October, to larissa @ kiscon . org. Please use the form on the KiScon website for giving us the details (title, length, etc.) on your vids.
Premieres of all genres: these are vids that have not been published on the Internet or distributed on DVDs/tapes yet (we are lenient if the vid has been shown at a convention in the past, as long as it is not available anywhere). Vids created in or after 2020 (and unpublished) are eligible for our competition.
Classics of all genres: vids that showcase the history and rich variety of K/S and Star Trek vidding from the late 1970s to the 2010s.
Fun & danceable song vids for our Disco Night & Sing-a-Long (Saturday night): exactly what it says on the tin – upbeat vids suitable for singing along and dancing the night away!
For more details, please see the 2nd progress report. This seems also like a good opportunity to mention that there are (physical) prizes for the winners of our competitions. K/S notebooks and badges and many other delightful items are waiting for you.
2. Program Survey (open until 30 September): Which tropes are your all-time favourite? How has the portrayal of the K/S relationship changed over the years? What is the future of K/S fandom? Explore these topics and many more in our panels and discussions! We've collected your suggestions and also brainstormed many more topics, and now it's time for you to vote! This survey is meant for already registered attendees or those who plan to register for the con. Please let us know which online panels and activities you would like to see and attend at KiScon (this is not a fixed registration for individual panels, just a survey to better tailor the program to your interests!), and whether you would like to moderate/present one or more. The titles are not final – if you claim a panel and have a better title in mind, do let us know. There are a few activities (e.g. vid shows, opening ceremony, cosplay etc.) that are a fixture at KiScon, and therefore they are not part of this survey. If there is more than one mod offer per panel, we'll get you in touch with each other.  If you do not see your must-have panel on this survey and think that Spock will be sad without it, please add it in the comment field at the end of the survey. Not all panels and activities will make it into the program – as much we would love a week-long con, we sadly only have a weekend. For all questions, panel tech requests, etc. – please use the comment field. Panels will be held via Zoom; if you want to offer an activity but are unsure whether you can pull it off online or whether you might need something beyond Zoom's infrastructure (e.g. for an interactive game), just drop us a line in the comment field at the end of the survey. We are happy to hear any and all ideas, and we will do our best to find solutions that work for all. Big thanks to all of you!
3. Demographic and Feedback Survey: Lillian created this survey to help the concom get a better feel of the needs and specifics of our community. Important: There are a few questions that are optional (e.g. age, gender, how did you get into K/S etc.) and if you do not want to answer them, this is totally fine. The key questions pertain to the convention itself – are there any access needs or technical barriers we should be aware of, how well informed do you feel about KiScon activities, what can we do better, etc.
We are not going to share the responses with anyone outside of the concom, and the data will only be stored until the end of the convention. 4. Pub Night Shenanigans: The last Pub Nights at the "KiScord" (KiScon Discord server) were great fun and we were excited to see/hear both new and familiar faces/voices. Some of us opted for joining the chat with video (in T'Lara's experience this makes following the conversation much easier), and some with audio only – either is fine during Pub Night. One of our games resulted in a K/S Mixtape that you can enjoy on Spotify; listen to the songs that are quintessentially Kirk/Spock for our Pub Night members. The playlist will hopefully grow in the future. Another game led us through the alphabet, this time on the hunt for tropes / tags. A big thank-you to Lillian for compiling the tropes and creating the playlist!
Tumblr media
(You can download a high-res pic of the trope cloud here, for easier zooming and trope exploring.)
The next Pub Nights are on: 17 September, 3 p.m. EDT 1 October, 5 p.m. EDT 15 October, 3 p.m. EDT 29 October, 5 p.m. EDT
For the October sessions, leading up to the convention, we will dedicate a part of each gathering for addressing technical questions. We'll happily explain how to use Conline, Discord, and Zoom. If you feel uneasy about the virtual framework of this year's KiScon, here's your chance to get familiar with all the tools and platforms, and Ask All The Questions. Apart from these dates, you can always reach out to us if you need more assistance (1lostone @ kiscon . org and lillian @ kiscon . org).
5. Cosplay:
Put on your awesome costumes or uniforms for our virtual Saturday night banquet and win a prize. You can take part in the cosplay competition by either showing off your costume via Zoom during the banquet or, if you are more comfortable with this, by posting your cosplay pics (recent ones, please, not from past conventions) to the dedicated Discord channel on Friday or Saturday during the convention. This channel will only be open to registered attendees.
Cosplay is also encouraged all weekend long, for any of the panels and activities; even if each one of us attends the con while sitting in our living rooms, let's do it in Trek style. Or show off your fabulous K/S and Trek tees during our Zoom sessions.
6. Where to find information & announcements:
Official website KiScon Discord server Tumblr blog Twitter Conline Facebook Group Dreamwidth
If you signed up for the newsletter only recently and want to read the issues you missed (there's plenty of useful information in them), you can find the links to  the past newsletters on our website in the FAQ section.
7. Last but not least, a reminder: Sign-ups for Kirk/Spock Advent Calendar 2022 are open, and so is the creation period!
Tumblr media
