Took a weekend trip to Yamagata to see Grandma! It was flurrying in Fukushima when we arrived, but we could see more and more snow clouds over the mountains. As we drove from the Fukushima airport towards Yamagata, we went through many tunnels. Each tunnel revealed more snow! It was pretty to look at from the cozy heated seats of our rental car, but it sure was chilly when we had to get out.

The momiji, Japanese maples, were in full glory!! We visited the beautiful Uesugi Shrine which had quite a few fine maples in addition to the impressively tall cedar trees.

It was pretty fun to sit by a propeller on our little plane. The propeller made it a little tricky to spot Mt. Fuji, but I was able to spot it!

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! Man, isn’t it cool that there are large vehicles that allow people to fly through the air like birds? Vehicles that allow us to experience places, packages and produce from around the world in a fraction of the time of car, train or boat? That’s just plane crazy…and wonderful.

Nairobi to Masai Mara and back again, July 2023

The flight from Nairobi to the Mara North Conservancy was on a relatively large plane (16-ish passengers) from Nairobi's Wilson Airport. Wilson is very small and calm compared to the international airport, and the flight took less than an hour. I didn't get photos, but started seeing amazing animals (hippos, elephants, giraffes!) before the plane landed.

When it was time to head back to Nairobi, we left from a different airstrip on the Naboisho Conservancy. It consisted of a small parking area and a little building with bathrooms. The single employee was there to ride a motorbike up and down to ensure that the runway was free of animals.
