Ending made me less angry at the unnecessary bs I suffered for about 15 episodes. Good final episode.

Naar Polen/Poznan

Halverwege de middag was het op zo'n tijdstip dat als de zon door de bomen zou schijnen je dan van een glas bokbier kon nippen of zoals nu je na negen jaar deed, de Poolse grens passeren, ook geen ongenoegen. Het landschap was vanaf Nederland heel verschillend geweest, nu kwamen we in een groot dennenwoud terecht, wel meer dan een uur lang, pas daarna kon je in het licht heuvelachtige landschap in de verte een kerktorentje zien dat omgeven werd door betonnen drielaags flats, een geheel dat niet echt bij elkaar paste. Waar we ons precies bevonden wist ik niet, voor een globale indruk had ik echter een kaart uit 1980! , meegenomen. Een detail bracht me terug naar die beklemmende tijd van het IJzeren Gordijn. Er stonden wegen op die dieprood waren ingekleurd, en alleen op deze wegen mocht je rijden.

Tegen de avond bereikten we Poznan, een stad met een half miljoen inwoners. Op een straatnaambord stond Ulica Jana Pawla II en een zijstraat heette 4 C.... en nog iets 1989. De eerste was makkelijk... dat kon niet anders dan de Johannes Paulus II straat zijn, maar de tweede? Dat had ik later uitgezocht en het bleek de 4 juni 1989 straat te zijn. 4 juni? Volgens mij was het neerslaan van de demostranten op het plein van de Hemelse Vrede in Beijing op 5 juni van dat jaar, maar daar zou het vast wel niet naar vernoemd zijn.

Door de regen liepen we naar de oude binnenstad van Poznan, er stonden prachtige panden die merendeels opgeknapt waren, maar ook de niet opgeknapte panden straalden charme uit, zeker op deze ochtend waar de met kinderkopjes geplaveide straten glansden. Op elke straathoek stonden beelden van belangrijke figuren uit de Poolse geschiedenis. En een monument waar de opstand tegen het communistische bewind in 1956 herdacht wordt. Het werd droog juist op het moment dat we een café verlieten na koffie en overheerlijk gebak. Poznan een mooie stad, waar je in de gebouwen nog veel van de Pruissische invloed (1793-1918) kan herkennen.

Eénmaal terug in het hotel livebeelden van de funeral van The Queen op Windsor Castle. Je ziet een doedelzakspeler langzaam uit beeld lopen, het geluid sterft langzaam weg. Door de regen en de wind kon het vandaag koud zijn, dit levert echt kippenvel op.

I love Queen Dowager Inwon!  I first got introduced to her in “Dong Yi”.  She became King Sukjong’s queen after Queen Inhyeon died and Jang Hee Bin had been deposed.  At first, I wasn’t sure if she was ally or foe to Dong Yi, but in the end, she turned out to be on Dong Yi’s side and protected her from those who would try to bring her down.  

In history, Queen Inwon was only a year older than King Gyeongjeong and seven years older than Prince Yeoning.  She was said to be very fond of her stepson, Prince Yeoning, and adopted him as her own son when he was about nine years old.  This effectively strengthened his claim to the throne.  It was even said that she protected him from being assassinated when he was just a crown prince.   However, I think in “Haechi” this bit of history was changed a bit.  Queen Inwon is a lot older in the drama and the adoption as well as the assassination attempt haven’t taken place, although there was a scene when she threatened one of the ministers opposing Yeoning that she would adopt him to stop them from questioning his right to inherit the throne.  In any case, what remains the same is her genuine affection for him.  

However, I think the drama has moved up the attempt to Yeoning’s life to when he’s already king and is presenting it in such a way that Cho Hong and Yeo Ji will become part of the Queen Dowager’s attempt to protect his life.  Through Heo Cho Hong, Yeoning’s former wineseller friend and now trusted handmaid, Queen Inwon has employed Cheon Yeo Ji as a court maid, with the express purpose of protecting Yeoning.  She sends Yeo Ji on secret errands, such as spying on the ministers, and allows her to watch over Yeoning without him knowing of her presence at all.

This twist in the plot only further strengthens my suspicion that the threat to Yeoning’s - now King Yeongjo - life will come in the form of the rebellion by Yi In Jwa, coupled with Prince Mil Poong and the Soron faction’s complicity in said attempt to overthrow him.  And that, in the process, Yeo Ji will sacrifice herself.  So many times now, Yeo Ji has said that she wants to protect Yeoning  whatever happens.  She was even willing to give up her freedom as a damo and live the restricted life of a court maid, if only she can be near him and watch over him.  

I just wish the drama would show how Yeo Ji ended up being trained as a court lady.  Was it because Queen Inwon was searching for someone close to Yeongjo whom she can trust and Cho Hong thought of Yeo Ji?  Or was it the other way around?  Did Yeo Ji secretly approach Cho Hong about her plan to enter the palace without Yeoning knowing, and the opportunity presented itself when Queen Inwon voiced her desire to look for a person she could trust to watch over her stepson?

Anyway, I love that the drama used what was recorded in history as Queen Inwon’s attempt to protect Yeongjo from his enemies and inserted the characters of Yeo Ji and Cho Hong in what she’s doing.  And I love that the Queen is presented as warmhearted and kind as she seemed to be based on history.

Haechi: The Heir of Prince Sohyeon

In last week’s episodes of Haechi, Prince Milpoong attributed his greater claim to the throne as being due to his being descended from Crown Prince Sohyeon.  Prince Sohyeon was the son of King Injo, who came up during The Crowned Clown due to successfully usurping Gwanghae in history.  You’d think that orchestrating a coup to dethrone what was considered a tyrant in his own time and being the direct ancestor of all subsequent Joseon kings would result in Injo being the protagonist in any number of movies and shows, but nope, dude is always an antagonist, or at best an obstacle.  The main reason is because he was just a bad king.  During The Crowned Clown, I may have said that choosing Injo over Gwanghae was like saying you were voting for Donald Trump in the US 2016 elections even though you knew he was unqualified because you thought Hillary Clinton was unlikable.  If I didn’t say that then I probably should have.  In both cases, the more qualified and competent candidate may have been considered less likable and had plenty of their own problems, but they were still a much better choice.

 Another reason was Crown Prince Sohyeon.  By most accounts, despite the Dad Is A Weak King issue, Prince Sohyeon is considered to have probably been a pretty good candidate for being king.  Due in part to the whole thing with Injo being a bad king, Prince Sohyeon, his wife, Princess Minhoe, and his brother, Prince Bongrim, spent several years as hostages in the Qing court.  Prince Sohyeon worked on establishing strong ties and alliances, which allowed him to work as an advocate for Joseon citizens who came in conflict with the court, as well as those who had been captured and enslaved in raids.  When he returned to Joseon, King Injo considered him to be too pro-Qing.  He also came back with ideas about science and Christianity. Those didn’t go over well with dad either.   Cue lots of fighting and distrust.  It didn’t help that Injo was somewhat on the paranoid side.  Getting everyone to help you steal someone else’s job and then not being very good at that job doesn’t exactly make a person feel like they have good job security.  

 In any case, one day Prince Sohyeon was found dead in King Injo’s chambers.  The most popular theory in that, in a fit of temper, Injo threw an ink slab at his son’s head.  Slightly less popular is that King Injo had his son poisoned.  It was never properly resolved.  Injo soon had Prince Sohyeon’s children exiled to Jeju island, where all but the youngest soon died.  Princess Minhoe fought to learn the truth about her husband’s death, but was soon conveniently accused of treason and killed.  Prince Bongrim, who had considerably less fond memories of his time as a hostage than his older brother, was made crown prince and eventually became King Hyojong who, as far as I know, is the direct ancestor of all subsequent Joseon kings.  I haven’t seen it yet, but I’m told the sageuk Cruel Palace is a very good accounting of all this.  

 The sole surviving child of Prince Sohyeon was Prince Gyeongan, who you might remember as the almost supernaturally well behaved toddler in Chuno.Prince Gyeongan died fairly young, but not before having his own son, who eventually became the father of Lee Tan, aka, Prince Milpoong. I haven’t been able to find much online about the actual Prince Milpoong, but from what I can tell, while he did oppose Prince Yeoning’s appointment as Crown Prince and later rebelled against him once he was king (the rebellion I mentioned a few weeks ago that Park Moon Soo helped put down) it was for the more generic “I feel I have a better claim to the throne than you and also I hate your politics” reasons and not his being a creepy sadistic serial killer who keeps trophies from his victims.  He also probably had nothing to do with the poisoning of King Gyeongjong, which he’s implied to have done in the show.  (There were rumors that Prince Yeoning poisoned him, but there were never any evidence or reason to go with that other than it being a convenient accusation.)

 I’ve wondered for a while, though, if this depiction of Prince Milpoong might be a reference to Crown Prince Sado, and perhaps making an argument for a thread of hereditary insanity.  Prince Sado was the heir to King Yeongjo , aka, Haechi’s Prince Yeoning.  King Yeongjo is generally regarded as an excellent king, despite all the “ick, commoner” controversies that plagued his early years.  The one actual blight on his record is Prince Sado.  According to the memoirs of his wife, Lady Hyegyeong, Sado became very ill and, when he recovered, he became extremely anxious, especially when it came to his father, and later became paranoid and had hallucinations,  When Queen Inwon and Queen Jeongseong (currently the Dowager Queen and Crown Princess respectively in Haechi) he took it badly and his conditioned worsened.  He began beating eunichs in the palace, and soon escalated to killing palace staff, as well as assaulting and raping court ladies. There were also repeated private and public “scenes” with his parents, and abuses of his wife.  Eventually, King Seongjo and Royal Noble Consort Yeong, Sado’s biological mother, had o make the choice to execute him.  Since normal forms of execution couldn’t be used on the crown prince, the decision was made to lock him in a rice chest and let him starve to death, which took seven days.  After this, King Seongjo wmade Sado’s son, Lee San, his heir, and Lee San became King Jeongjo, regarded as one of Joseon’s best kings, right up there with King Sejong.

 Like Prince Sohyeon, Prince Sado was a prince who died young at his father’s hand, and so pretty quickly theories that he was totally innocent and it was all a conspiracy popped up, and eventually became VERY popular in the 19th century.  However, while Prince Sohyeon probably deserves most of the romanticization, Prince Sado…most likely doesn’t. His wife documented his descent pretty thoroughly, and court records of the time are pretty consistent on this matter.  Regardless, this incident is what popular fiction (at least in movies and TV shows I know of from the last 15 years) focuses on in King Seongjo’s reign,  and the bulk of them take the “Prince Sado was wronged” stance.

 While Prince Milpoong’s actions aren’t wholly in line with Prince Sado’s, it’s easy to see how Kim Yi Young might have used Sado for inspiration. KYY also wrote Hwajung, which chronicled the reigns of Gwanghae and Injo, and in later episodes, iirc, there was heavy implication that Injo was also mad, or at least dangerously paranoid. Whether this is deliberate or coincidence, I don’t know, but it does seem to create a thread n the writer’s works. Conversely, she also wrote Dong Yi and Yi San, two of the most popular sageuks of the later 2000s (sadly, I haven’t watched either yet, but hope to one day.)  Dong Yi is about Prince Yeoning’s mother, while Yi San, as you might guess from the title, is about King Jeongjo.  In that regard, KYY can be seen as coming back to complete the middle part of her trilogy almost a decade after the second installment, which actually takes place first.  Anyway, I said “conversely” because, from what I’m, told, Yi San, despite killing Prince Sado at the very being, goes out of its way to completely exonerate Prince Sado and make him the victim of a conspiracy.  So maybe KYY changed her mind abou Sado in the 12 years since Yi San, or maybe that’s all in my head.

Iets teveel chillen en bijna dagelijks taart

Ondertussen zit ik alweer ruim een week in Namche en is het hier goed vertoeven. Iets te goed wellicht want ook nu zit ik weer ergens goede koffie te drinken met een stukje taart. Namche is te vergelijken met een druk Alpendorp die eigenlijk alles van de toeristen moet hebben. Van ‘echte’ Sherpa cultuur is weinig te bekennen, alhoewel dit natuurlijk voor de inwoners van Namche hun hedendaagse cultuur is. Wel is het lastig hier goede zogenoemde informants te vinden voor mijn onderzoek: het trekkingseizoen is echt net begonnen (met vorige week in twee dagen zo’n 1300 aankomsten) en mensen hebben gewoon heel weinig tijd. Ook wonen hier bijna geen klimmers, dus is het meer data uitwerken en analyseren waar ik me de afgelopen tijd mee bezig heb gehouden. Ik ben me wel bewust dat ik iets teveel aan het chillen ben hier, dus daar moet maar snel wat verandering in komen. Al is het alleen maar om niet 10 kg zwaarder terug te komen 😬.

Gisteren een hele bijzondere ontmoeting gehad met Kancha Sherpa, de laatste overlevende van de eerste succesvolle Everest expeditie in 1953. Hij is nu 86, nog bijzonder helder van geest en was meer dan bereid met mij over zijn bijzondere leven te spreken. Ik had een klein cadeautje voor hem meegenomen, mini klompjes uit Nederland, en dat vond hij prachtig wat heel leuk was om te zien. Dat het tegenwoordig zo druk is met toeristen op Everest vond hij persoonlijk niet echt een probleem omdat het niveau van welvaart in de regio enorm is gestegen sinds 1953. Maar, zei hij, Buddha vindt het niet zo leuk. Hij liet me zijn medailles zien die hij had ontvangen van Queen Elisabeth en de certificaten waar hij zo trots op is. Geweldig om mee te maken!

Vanochtend ben ik in de gompa van Namche, het dorpshuis wat ook gebruikt wordt voor religieuze rituelen, bij de start van de Dolma puja geweest. Vandaag komt er een groep dorpsbewoners bijeen om van 10:00-16:00 te bidden ter ere van Tara, de moeder van alle Buddha’s. Dit werd gedaan door het chanten van liederen, het drinken van boterthee (gevalletje één keer, nooit meer), het draaien van mani wheels, en het in de lucht gooien van rijst. Een gezellig samenzijn waarbij het gewoon ok was voor de deelnemers om tussendoor een telefoontje op te nemen 😂.

De komende dagen zit er een wijziging in plannen aan te komen die ik totaal niet aan had zien komen, maar wat waarschijnlijk wel een unieke kans gaat zijn. Hierover later meer!

Charterstone biedt een korte regelboek waarbij je leert terwijl je speelt en regels ontsluit met ieder nieuw onderdeel. Ieder spel heeft een eigen motortje dat je op probeert te bouwen, en dat weer anders is in volgende spellen tijdens de campagne. Het verhaal heeft voldoende vertakkingen en mogelijkheden dat je keuzes er ook daadwerkelijk toe doen. Verder zijn er 75+ kistjes met metalen munten, 350+ unieke kaarten, houten tokens en talloze verrassingen die het spel levendig en iedere keer weer nieuw houden. Jouw reis door Charterstone’s vele geheimen zal 12 spellen duren, maar daar zal het zeker niet eindigen. #8 Netflix (deel 3)

Hey!

Vandaag heb ik weer een netflix serie voor jullie waar ik over ga vertellen. Deze keer is het “Once Upon A Time”.

“Once Upon A Time” gaat over een vrouw, Emma Swan. Ze is de dochter van Snow White en Prince Charming zonder dat ze dat weet. Ze is via een magische kast ontsnapt aan de vloek van de Evil Queen en groeit op in vele pleeggezinnen, die haar allemaal in de steek laten. Dit maakt Emma hard en ze vindt het hierdoor moeilijker om mensen te vertrouwen.

Emma belandt op haar achttiende in de gevangenis en blijkt dan zwanger te zijn. Haar zoontje geeft ze op ter adoptie, in de hoop dat hij een beter leven krijgt. Op haar 28ste verjaardag krijgt Emma bezoek van de tienjarige Henry Mills, haar biologische zoon. Hij is vastberaden om Emma mee te nemen naar zijn woonplaats Storybrooke.

Henry gelooft er namelijk in dat alle verhalen in zijn sprookjesboek echt zijn. Hij gelooft dat zijn adoptiemoeder de Evil Queen is, die alle inwoners van The Enchanted Forest heeft vervloekt, waardoor zij nu gevangen zitten in de gewone wereld en zich niets herinneren van hun ware identiteiten. Ook staat de tijd stil waardoor ze niet ouder worden, alleen Henry wordt ouder omdat hij van buiten Storybrooke komt. Henry is ervan overtuigd dat Emma de enige is die de vloek kan verbreken. Emma gelooft hier in eerste instantie niets van, maar langzaamaan beseft ze dat Henry’s sprookjesboek weleens meer zou kunnen zijn dan dat ze zelf denkt.

De serie heeft 5 seizoenen en het is nog niet duidelijk of er nog een 6e seizoen komt.

Het klinkt in eerste instantie als een serie voor kinderen, maar als je het kijkt kom je erachter dat dat harstikke meevalt. Het is een erg romantisch en spannend. Ook is het leuk om erachter te komen wie iemand uit de sprookjeswereld in de echte wereld is.

King Yeongjo and Yeo Ji

There is a scene in this preview for episodes 37 and 38 that was not shown in the actual episodes. It's the part at the end of episode 37 when Yeongjo and Yeo Ji finally meet again. Yeongjo had gone to the palace of Queen Dowager Inwon to check on her after being told that she had fallen victim to the plague as well. As he talks to the Royal Physician, a court lady from the Queen Dowager's palace rushes towards them calling the physician, unaware of the King's presence in her haste. Yeongjo freezes for a moment in shock at the sound of her voice and he turns his head to look. The court lady turns out to be Yeo Ji and she suddenly realizes that the King is standing in front of her. When her eyes fall on him, she hesitates and looks at him with worry. She actually forgets to bow in respect. He isn't supposed to know yet that she's already inside the palace.

Yeongjo forgets everyone else around him and rushes over to her, calling out her name, asking her why she's there. When she doesn't answer he looks at her closely and realizes that she has actually become a court lady. He demands to know why she did that, despite the fact that he expressly told her not to do so as it would mean losing her freedom to live the life of a normal woman. She explains that it was what she wanted. She would rather live the restricted life of a court maid and forego her freedom forever, if it would mean they can be together at the palace and she can protect him.

Yeongjo is so moved that he can't speak. He just looks at her, then he slowly takes her hand lovingly in his.

I don't really know why they cut this scene. Maybe they thought it would "out" what's going on between Yeongjo and Yeo Ji to everyone in the palace too soon. If that happened, she wouldn't be able to maintain a low profile anymore and be the Queen Dowager's eyes and ears to protect Yeongjo. And there wouldn't be any doubt anymore on what his feelings are towards her. I think even Yeo Ji herself, dense though she may be, would understand what Yeongjo means.

I just hope they would still show that scene in the last 2 episodes. It's quite beautiful. With very few scenes as it is between Yeongjo snd Yeo Ji, it would be a crime to waste this one.

The Romance of Yeongjo and Yeo Ji

“Haechi” is down to its final two days and we get these stills of King Yeongjo and Cheon Yeo Ji.  I don’t think there’s any doubt anymore of what these stills mean, especially the one at the top.  Yeongjo is finally able to show Yeo Ji how deeply he feels for her, and she in turn has accepted his heart.    

Throughout their acquaintance, Yeongjo has always been more transparent about his feelings.  Everyone around him is aware of it and they even encourage him about it.  Even Queen Dowager Inwon noticed it immediately the first time she saw them together at her bedside after she recovered from the plague.  It was so obvious to her that she even went further and sent Yeo Ji to help Yeongjo suit up in his armor, clearly having given instructions to Yeongjo’s manservant Ja Dong and his court maid Cho Hong to leave them alone.

Yeo Ji, on the other hand, was more of a puzzle.  She always treated him with respect, though she was never in awe of who he was.  She was never intimated by him and interacted with him comfortably.  In a way, she was like Cho Hong in how she treated Yeongjo.  Yet unlike Cho Hong whose heart was often in her eyes, Yeo Ji’s feelings for Yeongjo weren’t clear in the beginning. Yet she cared for him and showed it through her concern for his welfare and safety.  And she did make that monumental decision to become a court lady because it would mean they could be together in the palace and she could protect him.     

The first time I saw a sign that maybe the feelings weren’t one-sided was when Yeongjo almost kissed her when he was trying to explain what may happen if she became one of his court maids.  Yeo Ji didn’t struggle or resist when he took her hand and put his face so close to hers.  When he had gone, she was holding on to her heart.  And then when she talked to Ah Bong about the incident, she had a dreamy look in her eyes, like a little girl with a crush, quite excited that her crush felt the same.  Finally, when she confronted Yeongjo about it, after Ah Bong gave that silly reason that dashed her hopes, it was clear that she was quite embarrassed and disappointed when she thought that she was mistaken in thinking that Yeongjo’s actions meant he had deeper feelings for her.  

There are some who think that the romance between Yeongjo and Yeo Ji is forced and detracts from the main story, which is centered on Yeongjo’s rise to the throne and successful unification of the different factions in the government.  Then there are some who don’t like it just because they don’t like Go Ara.  I happen to be neither.

The romance is a minor part of Yeongjo’s story arc, but to me, its importance is not so much a romance for romance’s sake.  Rather, it shows another dimension of his character as a man and emphasizes why he has the qualities that makes a good king.  Yeo Ji is a lowborn woman.  Educated, yes, and intelligent, but lowborn just the same. Yet he isn’t afraid of loving someone like her.  For him to have opened his heart to a person far beneath his station says something of the kind of person that he is.  It speaks of a humility and compassion that most high-ranking people at the time seldom had for lowborns.  It’s one of those qualities that his father, King Sukjong, may have seen in him.   

One can argue that the fact that his mother was a lowborn woman made him particularly sensitive to people like her.  But to me, Yeongjo could have easily turned out to be resentful of that and such an attitude could have resulted in him avoiding any association with lowborns.  If he were more ambitious and greedy, he could have avoided mingling with the group of Inspector Han and instead, spent his time increasing his influence with the court officials from the different parties.  If he were more conscious of his station, he would avoid getting involved, much less having feelings, for someone like Yeo Ji.  There is no political advantage to him if he did.

As for Yeo Ji, there were many who were quite disappointed when she decided to turn her back on her life as a damo and become a court lady.  They felt that she had become weak and lost that quality that made her so interesting in the first place.  Maybe it was a result of Go Ara’s unexpected injury that they had to change Yeo Ji’s character arc midway into the story. Perhaps if she weren’t injured, Yeo Ji could still have become a court lady but still a kick-ass kind.  We would have still seen her neutralizing spies and assassins inside the palace, even dressed in her court robes.  That  would have been quite a sight.  But the injury limited Go Ara’s movements and even the kind of scenes she could do.  At least, her character was kept in the story.  

But in any case, I didn’t see her decision as a weakness because it was a decision that she made independently.  No one, not even Yeongjo, forced her to do it.  He didn’t even want her to do it but she did.  And she did it not because she was afraid for herself and wanted his protection inside the palace.  On the contrary, she did it because she knew he would be in greater danger there and that his other friends cannot follow him.  As a court lady, she would be right inside and would have access to him.  And as a trained damo, she can easily protect him.  She can be both his court lady and his king’s guard.

All things considered, I find the idea of Yeongjo and Yeo Ji a beautiful thing and I do love the scenes between them, no matter how limited they are.  (And I do think Jung Il Woo and Go Ara have lovely chemistry, although not the sizzling kind.  More of a slowburn kind.) The only problem I had was that their characters fell in love offcam and the drama just showed us the aftermath.  If the drama had shown more scenes of them together early in the story, getting to know each other, spending time together, then the later scenes of them being apart and then finding each other again in the palace would have had a greater payoff.

Charterstone biedt een korte regelboek waarbij je leert terwijl je speelt en regels ontsluit met ieder nieuw onderdeel. Ieder spel heeft een eigen motortje dat je op probeert te bouwen, en dat weer anders is in volgende spellen tijdens de campagne.
