Clear Skies Ahead: A Novel
Tumblr media
Hi! I wrote a book about a twentysomething burnout henshin hero using their secret identity and homemade power suit to explore their gender and pay the bills through social media! It's now completely available in its final edit! You can read it at this link!
Synopsis:
When early-20s burnout Alice tries to track down the local Portland superheroine Sky Horizon, she finds out that the heroine's true identity is none other than her old classmate Oliver, another early-20s burnout who uses the transformation to volunteer and survives off his Patreon. As he sheepishly explains, he designed the suit after his favorite tokusatsu superhero shows like Kamen Rider or Power Rangers.
When the suit's design gets leaked, however, he'll have to fight in earnest to keep his creation out of unscrupulous hands, and confront parts of himself he didn't think he was strong enough to face.
A YA-ish superhero story about shame, about responsibility, about how loving an idea enough is all you need to make it real.

That post about Higuchi Kouhei and his cat got me thinking about some other tokusatsu-to-BL pipeline actors that are on current or recent BLs, so I thought I'd do a screenshot post about Kamen Rider Revice, a recent toku series that features two lead actors who star in current BLs, plus an actor in a smaller role who was part of a side couple in a BL series that recently completed a second season.
The main character of Revice is Igarashi Ikki, played by Maeda Kentaro, currently playing Ohara Yamato in I Can't Reach You. His siblings are very central to the story as well--by the end of the series, the story is centered around his whole family. Ikki's younger brother Daiji is played by Hyuga Wataru, currently playing Yamasuge Ryuiji in If It's With You.
Here they are having a bath in the opening credits for the show (the Igarashi family runs a public bath house).
Tumblr media
I should say at the outset that I can't entirely recommend Revice, especially to folks who don't already have some tokusatsu-watching under their belts. It's a hot mess in a lot of ways. But it does have some really outstanding highlights. The best aspects of the series, in my book, were:
Kagerou (Daiji's demonic alter ego),
George Karizaki (my beloved),
Igarashi Sakura/Kamen Rider Jeanne (the most formidable female Rider I've seen in any series in the franchise), and
the relationship between Sakura and Natsuki Hana (a rare example of a convincing Sapphic ship in a franchise well known for "heated drama between men").
I'm not going to get into 2 and 3 here, as tempting as that would be, but I'll include as much of 4 as time/space permits.
It might seem weird that I'm not recommending a series with some of my favorite characters in the entire Kamen Rider franchise AND a relationship between girls that is a hair's breadth from being canonically queer. It's just too much of a trainwreck to endorse as a whole. But as I said, the highlights are really something.
One of the biggest issues I had with Revice was that Ikki, the protagonist, just isn't a very compelling character. As a result I don't think Maeda Kentaro really got to show the range of his acting abilities in this series. (This just makes me more curious to see him in ICRY. From the excerpts I've seen so far, it seems like he shows a really different side of himself.)
Maeda appreciators might still enjoy the many determined faces and creepy smiles he gets to dish out in this series. Here's a sampling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's possible they'll want to look away when he starts doing things like this, though.
Tumblr media
Fans of both Maeda and Hyuga might enjoy some of their scenes fighting side by side, including doing their various henshin poses (the moves they do before they transform into their masked Rider forms).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or when they do things like this bonkers flying kick.
Tumblr media
Thankfully, Daiji is a more interesting character than Ikki, so Revice gave Hyuga some more challenging things to do. I thought Hyuga also just really made the most of every opportunity the show presented to him. He was seriously impressive. This is the reason I was sold on IIWY the moment I saw the announcement about it based solely on Hyuga's involvement.
Here's a sampling of Hyuga as Daiji.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In addition to playing Daiji, Hyuga also played Kagerou, Daiji's aforementioned demonic alter ego. Kagerou was formed from thoughts and emotions that Daiji repressed. The biggest of these was his resentment toward Ikki. But apparently Daiji had also been repressing a desire to be a somewhat gender non-conforming goth, because that's Kagerou's other raison d'etre.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In some ways, it's hard to imagine a character more different from Ryuji. If they have anything in common, it's the fact that they both place a high value on honesty.
One other thing that's worth noting about Hyuga's work on Revice is that he was only 17 when the show premiered. He showed major dramatic range in this part, not only playing two very different characters but doing everything from low-key nuanced scenes to bombastic high drama. Not to mention the stunts! Doing all of this at 17 is seriously remarkable.
Now for our bonus dude! There's a secret evil-fighting organization called Weekend that secretly keeps tabs on the Igarashi family for years before coming out of hiding to join the big central battle of the series. One of the Weekend operatives is Ushijima Hikaru.
Tumblr media
Look familiar? Maybe not, he didn't make faces like this on his BL series.
Tumblr media
How about now? Yep, it's Oku Tomoya, who plays Hanabusa Asuka on both seasons of Minato Shouji Coin Laundry.
Oku has some big scenes and interesting moments in Revice. He does some romantic pining, goes through big-time loss, does quite a bit of martial-arts sparring, gets seriously injured, and more. He even gets to henshin a few times. Here he is getting ready to do just that with Sakura and Hana. Those Weekend uniforms are pretty hardcore in a 70s flight attendant sort of way, but I feel like Oku really sells it here.
Tumblr media
While we're on the subject of Sakura and Hana, I feel like I can't mention their relationship without including some moments where their story came particularly close to tipping into full-on yuri.
Tumblr media
If you're going to do an enemies-to-lovers story, why not make them full-on superhero nemeses?
Tumblr media
The word "date" might not technically get used by the characters, but there's no mistaking that the amusement park hangout Sakura invites Hana on--while she is still a fully-functioning bad guy, I might add--is definitely a date.
Most of the time when a Rider beats their nemesis for the final time they don't hold each other tenderly in the sunset.
Tumblr media
By the end of the series, they're in a big tub together at the Igarashi's bath house.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are tons more examples but you get the idea. If this isn't borderline-yuri I don't know what is.

I think people who believe in this 4chan/kiwifarms/lolcow/whatever else conspiracy surrounding satoryuga and the girls in the fandom who have openly supported her (like stacaesar) need to ask themselves: which makes more sense - queer people in the toku fandom were angry they got blocked by the most popular sentai gif maker and fled to their discord to get people to harass and dox her OR kiwifarms decided to harass and dox a completely unknown outside of the fandom South Korean woman just for fun?
The reuploader who had started all this (thea-nymo) had mentioned in an ask that they were part of the most popular toku lgbt+ discord which is where they learned they weren't the only one blocked by her. Guess who else was part of that server? ME! And what anybody who doesn't know is that people on that discord who follow satoryuga were constantly complaining about her - she doesn't gif fight scenes, she doesn't understand anything, she's always being white-knighted, she needs to learn English, she doesn't gif women enough, she's a fujoshi, i hate her positivity, she's annoying telling people to do yoga, she needs to stop posting photos of her stupid stacy doll, ect ect day in day out every single time she posted, someone on the discord had a problem with it and would post screenshots of whatever it was they were annoyed about, which would make people there who don't even use tumblr echo the same sentiments because if your friend has a problem with this person they clearly have a reason so you also will hate this person and make fun of her translated English. Casual racism and xenophobia woohoo.
It also needs to known that that server which had almost 300 people in it no longer exists because discord banned it a few months back - because one of the moderators had been raided by the police for being in posession of ch*ld p*rn. The main user on here who had started the original "this is definitely kiwifarms doing this!" sentiment, who then also accused satoryuga of doing all this to herself, who also then tried to say satoryuga didn't even exist and this was all a psyop, was also caught in 4k via screenshots as having told several women and underage girls they deserved to get raped and chopped up and other violent things simply because they had been defending satoryuga in some kind of way. There are others who were also shown to have been in some way involved in harassing both satoryuga and stacaesar - so it's completely delusional to act like no one in the fandom would ever do such a thing, when it's been made very clear that there are people on here who would and are continuing to do such a thing.
Consider how many people in the fandom have begun to ostracize stacaesar, people who would reblog her toku gifsets whenever she posted them suddenly won't touch her posts with a 10ft pole after seeing the harassment she's been getting, or perhaps rather after seeing her defend herself against the harassment she's been getting. Is this also kiwifarms doing? Is this imaginary kiwifarms who is invested in the freaking tokusatsu fandom making people continue to interact with predators in the fandom while also forcing people to not interact with an underage victim of violent rape and death threats who is literally just defending a South Korean woman who was doxxed and assaulted?
So, again: which makes more sense? That people here on tumblr, in our fandom (some of which have already been exposed as having been involved!) were angry that they got blocked by satoryuga because they had been anonymously or un-anonymously sexually harassing her in her inbox which caused them to get their friends to start a harassment campaign with the end result being physical assault OR again… that kiwifarms decided to harass and dox a completely unknown outside of the fandom South Korean woman just for fun?

(Sorry for sending so many asks dhdjd)
While we dont know yet if they will be plot relevant, something tells me that either Leo or Kii are gonna be the "Akechi" of the game, since it seems to mirror a lot the original game
Leo, well, his costume and persona looks so much like a power ranger/super hero, just like Princekechi. Maybe instead of a detective he is more of an actor working in some fetherman-like show.
Kii, we dont know a lot about him, but from his nickname (im pretty sure it means gold) and from the sticker he is dressed like some rich boy i feel like he will be a pain in the ass. Plus his persona has a lot of tree immaginery going on, thing that is usually connected with viking myths.
Also if someone can correct me: from what i know in asia, expecially China, freckles are a symbol of bad luck
(No worries!! I love getting asks, it's fun to have other people to talk to about this game and get ideas going!)
I think I might've pointed out something similar about Leo's superhero vibe reminding me of Crow back when we first saw him? That was months ago, so I might never actually have gotten it into a post, haha. But I absolutely agree! One of his datamined voice lines from the first beta mentions it being like a tokusatsu drama, so that's absolutely the vibe he's trying to go for, too. Admittedly, I do think he's more likely another Phantom Idol than a story character- I think he would've gotten as much focus as Soy in the trailer and promo info released, otherwise- but I suppose there's still hope for at least another few hours, haha!
If he is a Phantom Idol, I suspect he's not intended to parallel a P5 character, but he may still end up having similarities even if he isn't. I kind of got the vibe (again, from the teeny handful of voice lines we got in the first beta's data) that he might be a bit more outwardly nerdy/excitable than Akechi? Maybe "earnest" is the word I'm looking for? I'd totally believe that out of the mask/the real Leo at least has dreams of being an actor or something along those lines, especially in that kind of production.
For Kii, I think you're thinking of 金 (kin) for gold? Which doesn't necessarily mean it couldn't be tied to that, but as I'm sorta suspecting he'll also be a Phantom Idol (just with a story counterpart, like Tomoko), I'm similarly suspecting his Merope-given codename'll just be a shortening of, or joke on, his real name, much like all the confirmed Phantom Idols have been.
(For the record, my Japanese dictionary returns the following definitions for Kii (different words based on different kanji that "kii" could be written with): "odd; strange; queer; peculiar", "displeasure; offense; offence; disliking", "your will; your wishes; your request", "position of aircraft", and "Kii (former province located in present-day Wakayama and southern Mie prefectures)".)
I had originally only really noticed the top of his Persona was kinda like fire (kind of like Yosuke's Takehaya Susano-o in P4), but looking at it again, you are so right about the tree imagery going on! Maybe you're right about the viking thing, too (admittedly I've never gone too deep into Norse mythology, haha).
From his glasses + expression in the sticker (and disappearance of glasses in his All Out Attack cut-in), and how he seems more serious/cold as a Phantom Thief, my take on him had sort of been, up to this point, that he'd be more of a nerd that's perhaps trying very hard as a Thief/trying to look cool/trying to be taken seriously, or something along that line, and his real-world counterpart is the Mishima parallel (going by a guess from there that maybe Kii's a Phantom Idol, so it's like Kotomo). But I do agree that what we can see of his sock and shoe in the image does sort of have a "rich kid" vibe to it, haha. It could just be related to whatever his thief theme is?
I did a really quick search about freckles in China, and while I'm not sure if they're bad luck (again, quick search, maybe I missed something/didn't go deep enough) it seems like they do tend to be considered unattractive/ugly, which I believe was also the case even here in the US in the past. But that's a good angle to come at this from- personally I think the freckles are cute, but the developers probably had a different intention...

About me:
Call me Malus, I also go by Axel. I use they/them pronouns primarily, and am trying out it/its pronouns as well. Born in '97 (figure out my age from there). White settler on unceded Massachusett land. I work in IT by day and draw/paint things as a hobby.
I'm Aromantic, Asexual, and Nonbinary- but I prefer the term Genderqueer.
About this blog:
Everything goes here- I cannot keep sideblogs. My former art blog is @solsticine and my aesthetic/inspiration blog is @malus-aesthetic. I'll post my new art under #art_gallery. I have a very wide range of interests including wildlife (bugs especially), fantasy/sci-fi, tokusatsu, film/art history, and some anime. I'm not a reliable tagger, so be warned if you are sensitive to specific things.
This blog is for mature audiences. I won't be censoring my posts or reblogs beyond tagging them, so scroll at your own risk.
Self-proclaimed safe spaces and DNI lists aren't my thing. In lieu of that, here is a non-exhaustive list of things I'll make fun of you for:
metaphorical bootlicking/fascism/capitalist values
insincere tone policing and performative activism
promoting any sort of queer infighting, including any sort of 'is x allowed at pride' discourse
making copious amounts of pornographic content related to a children's show
spreading fear/hate for mental illnesses and personality disorders, especially schizophrenia, bipolar, BPD, and NPD
spreading fear/hate for animals you don't like, including INSECTS, rats, pigeons, "ugly" animals.
relatedly- promote animal rights over animal welfare
If I think of anything more that's distinct, I'll add it. Sometimes we can't get along. It's your job to handle those feelings, not mine.

Kiryu Sento and his parallel to gay self discovery
By Bobby
Word count 1,419
I ended up writing this because of the response to this post and also because I’m over $100 for my Gofundme and I promised I would write this if I did. So here you go.
Kiryu Sento(23) is a the main character of Kamen Rider Build, the 2017 through 2018 season of the long running tokusatsu franchise. When we were are first introduced to our hero, we are told that he is a freelance scientist with amnesia who lives with his father figure and said father figure’s daughter. The father figure being Souichi Isurugi and the daughter being Misora Isurugi. The next relationship  established in the show is with Ryuga Banjou, the secondary protagonist and Sento’s Best Match. These three characters will be the primary relationships that I will use to explain why Sento’s journey throughout the series reflects that of a gay youth trying to come into their own. Along with a few other relationships I will discuss towards the end.  The first relationship I will explore will be with Banjou, who I believe is the most important character to Sento’s journey.
When Sento and Banjou first meet, they start out being antagonistic to one another until they realize that the similarities of their origins. The both of them having been kidnapped and experimented on by a group called Faust. In Sento’s case, this is partly how he ended up with amnesia and in Banjou’s case, he escaped before his memory could be erased. Banjou is on the run for a murder that he claims he didn’t commit and while Sento is skeptical at first, Banjou’s ernest insistence of his innocence leads Sento to take his side and help Banjou escape. These events take place within the first episode, which caps off with a joke where Sento points out that Banjou’s fly is down but waits to the last minute to say anything about it.
As the series continues, we see Sento and Banjou move on from being begrudging allies, to friends, to a “Best Match.” Sento seems to become more and more accustomed to Banjou’s presence, even making important choices solely on how they would affect Banjou. He keeps up a sarcastic and teasing facade towards Banjou, all the while exhibiting little shows of affection such as creating tools and gadgets specifically for him. Banjou eventually becomes a Rider himself and fights alongside Sento. Following this, the two acquire several powered up forms. The most notable being Cross-z Charge, Build Hazard, Cross-z Magma, Build Cross-z and Build Genius. The thing that connects each instance of them gaining a power up is that they do so in order to protect the other/show how close they have become.
Due to extreme circumstances, by the end of the series the two end up being dependent on one another in a setting that’s both familiar and unfamiliar. Despite everything however, the pair look forward to the future as they know they have one another.
The second relationship we will be exploring will be between Sento and Misora. Misora acts as a little sister figure to Sento. The two often play tricks on one another such as drawing on the other’s face when they are asleep. Though Sento is often enthusiastic about his various discoveries and inventions, Misora tends to seem as if it doesn’t interest her at all as long as he kicks in for spending money around the house. Though the two often playfully antagonize one another, they also often look to each other as emotional confidants. The pair often sharing secrets with one another that they wouldn’t readily share with anyone else.
There comes a point in the series where a personal revelation causes Sento to question his entire identity. He ponders as to whether or not he is a real person and if anything he’s done up till now actually means anything. Misora does her best to comfort him and tries to reassure him that the only him she’s known is Sento. So that is who he is to her.
The next relationship we will explore is that of Sento and Souichi. Souichi as a father figure to Sento for the first half of the series. He is the one who finds Sento after he has amnesia and takes him in to raise him alongside Misora. He is the person to push Sento to become Build and pursue being a hero in order to learn more about himself.
While this all sounds very positive, pretty early on in the series we learn something about Souichi that shows his intentions are not benevolent and that he does not have Sento’s (or even Misora’s) best interest at heart. This is one of a few events that truly shake Sento as he didn’t want to believe this person would hurt him and that they really accepted Sento as is. Despite discovering this, Sento continues to seek Souichi’s guidance throughout a large portion of the series. There is even a point where an event traumatizes Sento and the only person he can think of to seek advice from is Souichi. Souichi ridicules and belittles Sento for letting the event affect him, but also makes sure to toss a backhanded compliment in every now and then. It isn’t until the various other people that Sento has befriended at this point reassure him of his self worth that he stops going to Souichi for advice.
Two other character tangentially related to Sento’s journey that I want to talk about as well are Gentoku Himura and Takumi Katsuragi. In order to discuss Sento’s relationship with these two characters and how these relationships reflect Sento being read as gay, I have to dive into some spoilers. So be forewarned.
Takumi is the scientist who created the Build driver, the device that allows Sento to become Kamen Rider Build. Most of his research is partly responsible for much of the conflict throughout the series in one way or another. He also happens to be the person Sento was before he had amnesia. Like many other traumatic events in the series, this causes Sento to question his identity. Even to the point where Takumi’s personality begins to reemerge. The two of them even have full on conversations in their head about how to best deal with the conflict at hand. Katsuragi constantly questions Sento’s insistence of believing in Banjou and seems to be more emotionally cold than Sento in how he operates. Takumi’s personality even fully takes over for a few episodes before looking inside himself and realizing that Sento deserves to be his own person. (He also is the one to makes the Genius power up, which he leaves to Sento as a show of faith in him.)  This can be read as someone who’s come out of the closet having a period of self doubt. One where they question whether or not it would be easier to just pretend to be straight rather than deal with the horror of being known. Fortunately for Sento it seems that his previous personality is just as easy to read as a gay man.
When Takumi appears in the show, whether it be in flash back or when his personality returns, there is one person he seems to really be close to. That person is Gentoku Himura aka Kamen Rider Rogue. The two were the founders of Faust, the organization partly responsible for the conflict throughout the show. Though their intentions could be read as noble, their methods are questionable. We see that it’s Gentoku who convinces Katsuragi that creating Faust is a good idea and that Gentoku has high hopes for Katsuragi’s research. Even before the revelation about Sento and Takumi is revealed, Gentoku often speaks fondly of the time he and Katsuragi spent together. Around the time that Takumi reemerges from the depths of Sento’s mind, Gentoku has recently reformed and joined up with the Build crew. He and Takumi hash it out and Gentoku laments over how he used Takumi’s research and tells him that he missed him. Though Takumi doesn’t really forgive Gentoku, you can see that the two shared a very close bond.
I could continue to go on and cite various moments of Sento or Takumi’s life that show similarity to what your average 20 something gay would go through, but I will conclude with this. Sento’s journey starts him off practically alone with a one track focus on finding out about his past. The show ends with Sento having let go of that part of himself and settling down with a found family of his own making, living with his “Best Match”. If that doesn’t sound like a journey of queer self discovery then I don’t know what is.
