#Repost @queercalgary (@get_repost) ・・・ “Of course we’re inclusive”/“love is love”/“I celebrate diversity.” I am so tired of hearing these statements 🤦🏻‍♀️. They seemingly absolve people of the time, energy, and effort it takes to confront our own privileges and how we are complicit in systemic oppression of marginalized groups. . 👉How can you say that your business/event/group/organization etc. is “inclusive” or “welcomes everyone” if you haven’t consulted with various members of that community to see what is important to them or how you can meet their needs/affirm their identities? 👉”Celebrating diversity” without meaningful action is an empty statement if binarist, cis-hetero, ableist, racist, colonialist, xenophobic etc. beliefs, practices, & discourses are still present (I’m going to take a wild guess and say that they are). 👉Stop saying “love is love” as if it’s a radical or sufficient statement. Yes, love IS love, sure, whatever. But people still ask if my fiancé is my sister after I kiss her, so clearly we still have a long way to go 😑 . I am tired of the responsibility being on marginalized folks to assert their needs, to inquire if their identities will be recognized when seeking a service or attending an event, etc. (rather than seeing this work & labour already being done!) . Need help making your event/business/service/etc. more ~inclusive~? Hire me 🙋🏻‍♀️. Link is in my bio 👆🌈 . Ps. #Repost @queercalgary (@get_repost) ・・・ We all mess up. Maybe you won’t use somebody’s pronouns correctly, or you will make an assumption about somebody’s gender identity or orientation. Maybe you’re not sure when to use which word, or in what context. But using “PC culture” or the “fear of messing up” as excuses for not trying or for not putting in the work to understand is, to be perfectly honest, a load of 💩. Google, research, read, and ask questions… 🙋🏻‍♀️when appropriate! Keep in mind that it is not up to the LGBTQ2SA+ community to educate other people about their identities, especially when so many excellent resources exist. Sometimes it’s cool to ask questions, sometimes it really isn’t [side note: ✨ you are always welcome to ask questions in this space, or feel free to DM me ✨] .
