Snoop Dogg (Rapper)

Used to be a human trafficker driving around with a van full of girls he would sell to men, sometimes to a whole athlete team. He claimed he could have sex with any of the prostituted women he owned anytime he wanted. He was married at the time. He wrote multiple rap songs about beating up women to make sure we're kept under control, calling us sexist slurs. He was recently accused of sexual assault by multiple back up dancers.

Charlie Chaplin (actor)

Raped a child and got her pregnant. At the age of 48 he married a 18 years old girl.

Has facillitated the sexual abuse and rape of his female patients, some were children, protected rapists and participated in the disfigurment of a female patient in particular. He claimed his reluctant female patients were hysterical, lesbians and witches.

Both raped an actress on set.

Emile Hirsche (actor)

Assaulted a female collegue. She was a film executive and he strangled her before throwing her on the ground.

Assaulted his ex multiple times. One time he threw her and dragged her alongside their car. Her injuries included a swollen ankle, a burst ovarian cyst, a broken nose, and a blown out kneecap.

Oscar Pistorius (athlete)

While his wife had taken refuge in the bathroom he shot 4 times through the door with a gun, effectively killing her. He'll be out of prison next year after spending 10 years behind bars.

Morgan Ciprès (figure skater)

Sexually harassed a 13 years old via messaging.

Joaquin Phoenix (acteur)

Has sexually harassed multiple women.

Kurt Cobain (singer)

darkest.hue: Trigger warning: mentions of extreme violence against women and girls

Part 1/3 (more content to come on this matter)

Note: Although it should go without saying, here are some obvious truths: hip-hop the genre is not innately violent and misogynistic and neither are Black man. Also, hip-hop is not the only genre with abusive men, and the music industry is not the only industry in entertainment with abusive men.

For years now, Black women have been calling for hip- hop to have its "Me Too" reckoning (see recommended readings). Calls have recently reignited following singer Cassie's civil lawsuit against ex-boyfriend Diddy, where she alleges years of r*pe, domestic violence, and sex tr*fficking.

Many were rightfully stunned, horrified, and heartbroken by Cassie's vulnerable account, with many demanding the entire industry be finally held accountable for its pattern of violence against women. But is any of this really that surprising when we consider the way mainstream hip-hop talks about women, particularly Black women? Is it all that surprising when we consider the toxic loyalty and blind allegiance male rappers have to each other? Or the wealth of resources these men have at their disposal to control and harm women all the while flying under the radar? Or the world's disregard for the safety and protection of their Black women/girl victims?

A lot of loss and longing this year. Elton John and Bernie Taupin rewrote their 1973 single, Candle in the Wind to honor the memory of Princess Diana. Additionally, Puff Daddy's I'll Be Missing You was written in memory of The Notorious B.I.G., using a sample from The Police's Every Breath You Take.

Puff Daddy, and Bad Boy Records in general, would have a lot of influence over the sound of pop rap. Especially when it comes to sampling. The other song by him on this poll, Can't Nobody Hold Me Down, uses a sample from another 80's song, The Message by one of the original pioneering groups in hip-hop, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. The Message is considered to be one of the earlier hip-hop songs to center around social commentary. By 1997, hip-hop was barely older than two decades, but it's artists are still able to call back to and reference the previous generations.

Looking at the bottom of the top 10, we can start to catch a glimpse at the direction pop music is about to go. By the late 90's, more teenagers than ever were purchasing music. While boy bands and girl groups were certainly not invented this decade, their images were starting to shift in order to market more easily to this wider demographic. But the true power of teenagers over the music landscape won't be seen in full until after next year, with the introduction of MTV's Total Request Live.
