Week 2+3

These weeks task was to; 

Create an experience/event/performance for someone using light.

I have to admit, I started out with good intentions of making a device being able to replicate “lost-frames” or lag, for the real world. Maybe even connect it to the mobile network, so when connection is bad, so is the framerate of your life.  This proved hard to pull off, because of no real easy way to mock it up. Maybe except going around blinking your eyes, which would be a somewhat poor way to use 2 weeks of work on. I kept my eyes open, and looked elsewhere for ideas.

Since I am doing a self-programming course about music and design, I wanted to explore an analog way of producing visuals for music performance. Almost all festivals/clubs/venues uses some form of visual, but its usually programmed.  I was inspired by the patterns created by chladni plates, and wanted to do something similar.

I tried using light through glasses filled with water, to refract the light through the ripples in the water surface. The effect is similar to a pool lit up at night, and I tried taking on the challenge of using sound to create a reactive effect from the sound waves, creating actual waves in the water. 

To to this, I tried applying the principles of Cymatics to my work. Cymatics is vibrational phenomena connected to waves and their visual representation. 

I tried to come up with a clever idea on how to show these individual notes on a wall using the light, a speaker and probably some mirrors, but I couldn’t quite get around it.  Exhibit A were the closest I could get, but I’m cheap and didn’t want to ruin a speaker. I tried Exhibit B, just as a proof of concept, and after a an hour of tinkering, a clas ohlson shopping spree that turned out to be excessive and a soaked matress , I got it working where I was happy using the plastic cover for my LP player. But I still didn’t have a logical sound source placement figured out. 

Luckily, I have a semi-waterproof bluetooth speaker with passive elements, which worked great. By using a high contrast image, in this case a checkerboard, it’s easy to make out the wave’s patterns. The checkerboard was for illustrative purpose only, but I guess it looks cool as well hell. The test below includes a frequency test, 2 song examples, and me playing bass with the effect added. 

As you can see in the frequency test, which is from 20-200 hz, it is obvious that the most effective range of this exact setup is between 40-120 hz, which is a sub-frequency usually found in kick drums in a mix. As you can see on both exampes of the first song, the kick drums hits are the most effective, and as a bonus, the ripples leave the “screen” when the snare hits, which adds a dance-like quality to the visual. I see great potential in using this for minimal music, maybe only for low-frequency instruments. These instruments usually doesn’t sound good as solo-instruments, and this could add that solo-value. 

In the next test, I applied this effect to a trailer I made 2 years ago for my actionfilm “ratnation untitled 2″. This trailer utilizes a soundtrack that works great with the effect from the water, because of it’s choppiness, whilst still being intense. 

So I guess this is a experience, using light, for someone (me). I see great potential in this, and can’t wait to put up square meter of electronic equipment with a balancing water tray on top for my next big home party.

some info on me: I moved from south dakota to texas a week before my 10th birthday I believe, and since then ive gotten very into musical theatre. my music taste is mainly musicals, but I adore bands such as bastille, twenty one pilots and paramore (and bts but thats unrelated) and artists like dodie, tessa violet and savannah brown.
